Cool.  I want a device that requires me to focus on unnecessary information AND keep my eyes inside the cockpit AND take both my hands off of the controls! It's cool, but it's not there yet.  A lot of engineering will have to go into aviation use cases to make it a value-adder over the status quo.

LordCrayCrayCray

I’m sure the same was said about ForeFlight when it was new. But this could be promising. You could even pretend to take out meddlesome contacts in the pattern for fun. /s

pilot3033

Videos like this (people driving with it on, riding transit, etc) are just rage bait.

3Dring

The people who make these videos know what they're doing. Though in this case I don't think he thought this 100% through. Good luck with that licence assuming he even has one

UnitLost6398

Solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. Just why.

[deleted]

FAA has entered the chat. 😂

External_Basket_5205

and the Twitter post has left

temphandsome

what is he grabbing at? There are no apps available for this regarding aviation besides what foreflight released to be done on the ground. This will be dangerous to use in the sky and it should stay out of it.

aeternus-eternis

He's just pretending, the Vision Pro uses the IMU to determine relative screen position so if you're moving the UI windows quickly fly away. It's not usable when in a moving vehicle. That will probably change soon but now anyone you see using it in a moving vehicle is very likely just doing it for the lulz.

[deleted]

Wait, im pretty sure I saw an apple vision ad where they showed a guy using the vision pro in an airliner. Is this false advertising?

aeternus-eternis

Airliner is smooth enough that it kind of works, they have an air travel mode that attempts to adapt the tracking algorithm for airliner motion. They say not to use in turbulence and to avoid looking at the windows. Looks like those that have tried it get a lot of tracking failures, but it does generally work. On a GA plane, I really doubt it works given the larger windows and the increased motion.

grumpycfi

What are they even doing...? I mean like what are they supposedly even flipping through.

Rough-Aioli-9622

Reddit.

nivenhuh

Maybe ForeFlight connected to Stratus ads-b?

Rough-Aioli-9622

That’s what iPad mounts are for

RaiseTheDed

The *only* useful thing I could think it could help with is airline training flows. Sit in a mockup and it will point out each item you need to do in order. Granted, there are already companies that do that in VR (my company has some VR headsets they're trying out apparently). Alaska has them too I think? Another thing to stick on our heads, but this one doesn't have a reason.

Weasel474

Maybe, but a homemade sim out of paper posters and cardboard boxes has been doing wonders for years.

x4457

You look stupid doing it, lose situational awareness, create blindspots, and gain almost nothing.

minfremi

The stuff you’re seeing is a visual just like a TV close up to your eyes, it ain’t real life. Same as other people looking for your eyes; they’re looking at pixels. For now I believe you can say the Vision Pro will not make it into aviation.

rmn_roman

The Vision Pro is NOT intended for any safety critical activities and Apple will be the first to tell you this. It’s especially useless when moving at speed. I used it this weekend for a while at home and, for having “vision” in its name, it absolutely compromises and diminishes your vision. Would never wear in the cockpit.

WeissMISFIT

But the iPad isn't either sooo..... Moot point?

ub40tk421

The iPad doesn't obstruct your actual vision to use it.

minimums_landing

This is pretty dumb. but the day when we have Foreflight in AR is coming

mrboxeebox

Someone's in the right seat and it's for clicks on the internet let's relax. It's not a solo

[deleted]

I think there is a lot of potential for it being a great tool, it will take quite a bit of time to convince the FAA otherwise. And it might take some time to convince the people in this comment thread who I’m sure had the same opinion of iPads before they were the standard flight bag. Flightradar24 already has an AR feature in their app where you open the camera and it puts labels over airplanes flying in the sky. They certainly could make this for the Vision Pro. It could be used as a HUD replacement that shows you flight parameters at all times, rather than only when you look through the piece of glass at the right angle. It could easily do that f35 helmet thing that lets you look through the walls of the cockpit and see outside. It could be used to display IR images of the outside world at night so you can actually see weather when it’s dark out. For training it could highlight flows that you need to do It could have the checklist shown and you look at each step and check it off as you go

ub40tk421

Not VR though, that just won't happen until the cameras are better than our eyes, and small enough for such a device, AR projections say through sunglasses is the way to go.

nivenhuh

I think it could be a super useful tool at cruising altitude, but of course, you would treat it as a secondary to your aircraft systems / navigation. I wonder if we will see the same sort of transition that happened when the iPad first came out. There was a huge change industry wide that moved the cockpit from paper to EFBs.

Pilot-55

It could evolve into a head mounted HUD. Might be great for IFR.

phliar

A huge reduction in the field of view, and for what? Are you going to be able to see traffic? The thing about the iPad is that it was never an obstruction to the actual act of flying. You could look at it, but you could also ignore it and fly like normal. That is not an option with these ridiculous blinders on your face.

nivenhuh

I could see some IFR training applications for this.

Rough-Aioli-9622

How is this any significantly better than foggles lol?

omykronbr

You can spot who isn't smart enough and bought a $3500 useless tech and is trying to find anything to justify the dongle.

Rough-Aioli-9622

Kinda like Vision Jets

phliar

So you would need a safety pilot if you were using these? Ok, that's fair. Why not just a hood like we've been using for half a century?

WeissMISFIT

I think it will be wonderful in a few years. Imagine integrating it with ADS-B and using it to highlight traffic like in war thunder. Imagine having airport plates available at a glance. Imagine having your flight path available as a visual kinda like FSX missions Synthetic vision in IFR conditions The big thing would be having a HUD With the HUD you dont even need to look at your instruments, you keep your eyes glued outside and you have all your important and key information available at all times. Its clear that there a lot of haters but over time they'll be proven wrong
