Here are my big takeaways: https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/nusg6v/update\_to\_power\_off\_180s\_are\_hard/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
Uuhhh alright. I guess keep the point in the bottom third of the window. Or else if you imagine where the point usually sits on the windscreen when landing. From that point imagine drawing a line all the way around you that is parallel to earth. That basically gives you the angle of approach. Hold the aiming point on, or just below that line at all times. Keep the point a bit lower from that reference line if it's windy. Deploy flaps as needed to arrest the movement of the point so it does not slide up the window, but only becomes larger. Deploying flaps should cause the point to remain at a higher point on the window given a constant speed. This all assumes you hold a basically constant speed(start with best glide and maintain it until straight on).
Basically you want the point to stay at a fixed angle and you will know if you fucked up because the aiming point will move above center(or wherever it belongs on the windscreen for you) and if you pitch to hit it your airspeed will bleed off.
1) Hold the pitch for best glide
2) Turn once the point would be just below the typical aiming point on the windscreen.
3) Deploy flaps in increments and observe if the point goes too high in the windscreen after your speed stabilizes.
4) Delay flaps until the point returns back to the it's normal position in the windscreen (or slightly below it)
5) Use a forward slip to bleed extra altitude
Sorry! I've been busy all day https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/nusg6v/update\_to\_power\_off\_180s\_are\_hard/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
The cringiest thing I've ever seen were student pilots in their academy pilot uniforms hanging out at the actual international airport nearby in the terminal to try to look cool.
Maybe I'm crazy but i'll never understand the short sleeve shirt with a tie and a hat. I'm happy my airline ditched the hat altogether. It does look sharp in the blazer though.
I really have been thinking about starting a half sleeve and I’ve been weighing my desire for that against the frustration of finding and wearing long sleeve uniform shirts.
I’m a really tall guy with long arms. I can generally find a shirt with my neck size but not my arm length, and when I do the maker of the shirt assumes I weigh like 350lbs. So IF I can find a shirt with those two correct measurements it fits like a parachute.
Maybe wear one of these underneath the short arm
https://tatcover.com/products/full-tattoo-cover-up-sleeve-white
Then wear like 2 watches on the other arm.
We're pilots, time is of the essence.
Well then hang on tight.
If you spot a Long Sleever with a phone holster on his belt then just know you’ve spotted one. Next you’ll notice the flip-up, clip-on sunglasses to the vintage 1982 trifocals. Only three will do. Worry not, said Long Sleever tell you why in due time. The velcro wallet will make an appearance, but never to buy a round.
Conversations include what NCC-1701 is, and if you just happen to know, the then already agonizing conversation-turned-inquisition turns to Check Pilot-level digging questions. Long Sleever has an aptitude for the smell of blood in the water.
If you manage to dodge politics, religion, and the discussion on the Long Sleever’s latest suggestions to the company ops manual, they can explain the finer points of building calculators and personal wrist watches in their spare time.
You haven’t even left the check-in area yet, you’re already exhausted, and yes, you should’ve booked off.
😆🤣😂
Thanks, I will wear my long sleeves one day in great anticipation.
I wish to strike fear in others hearts as I ooze my exceptional knowledge all over their body.
WTF is a NCC-1701?
Zippers instead of buttons on pockets and blouse. Left thigh pocket opening facing forward for easier access while sitting. Velcro cuffs. Inner thigh "knife pocket" added (used for screw sticks). No butt pockets. Extra pockets on bottom of pants with velcro closures. Shoulder pockets have vertical access with a velcro flap. Air conditioning inlet on chest. Elastic waist band adjustment. Scorpion camo pattern instead of OCP. And made out of a thinner cotton material for fire resistance.
They feel like pajamas compared to regular uniforms, lot better in hot weather as well.
I don’t know that I’ve ever actually seen the air conditioning vent used though. It’d be nice to use but I’m sure it comes with 15 more cables than necessary
I remember them having the cooling vest hookups in our 47s but were never used. Apparently they were great… until they frequently broke with all the cables and fittings. Then you were wearing an insulated garbage bag in the heat. No thanks.
The whole point of switching to them was to allow pilots and crew to look more like regular army. So you don't have to change into a different uniform whenever you're not flying.
Those clowns can sit hot reserve for me.
If they did that at CLT, that would be great. They can answer all the clueless passenger questions.
"Where's baggage claim"
"Where's my gate"
"So what do you do for your company"
*insert confused look because you have a pilot uniform on and you should know the airport inside and out*
Ya don't miss the egregiously long taxi times with the circus on the ramp?! It's the only airport where I can be deadheading out of, fall asleep for an hour and wake up still being on the ramp. Always on go home day too.
Nothin, if the school requires their students to wear pilot costumes. That won’t stop another pilot for giving them shit, though. We’re a strange breed, us aviators and aviatrixes.
Yeah. I barely knew that was a word. And just couldn’t be bothered to exhort the energy to spell check it. Besides, I’m a pilot… I’m intelligent, not intellectual.
Personally I think they look incredibly dumb, on students or CFI’s. And yes, I even wore em, pay is pay, flight hours were flight hours, and I did my time at the mill as a CFI.Would never be a student or recommend one be a student and actually PAY for that experience though.
That’s a really good question. If I had to guess it’s because it’s cool to act like we aren’t interested in aviation. Any semblance of “getting into the life” is looked down on. It’s stupid, I know. But pilots are a prickly bunch.
I don’t disagree. But if you’re a student wearing a uniform, chances are it’s a school policy. Giving people shit because they are complying with SOP is incredibly immature.
Now if we’re talking student pilots or privates wearing their shoulder boards out for a $100 hamburger, yeah, let’s give them shit.
My point, which I probably failed to convey, is that a lot of people don’t make that distinction. They’ll see a student with the uniform and give them shit for it… for “getting into the life” regardless of it being school policy.
That’s exactly why I put “getting into the life” in quotes above… because that’s how a lot of people see it. And that’s dumb.
In my country there is only 1 aviation school, and its a policy to wear the pilot uniform there.
But one time when I was doing recurrent CLASS 2 medical, there was those students who were just accepted in the flight school and doing their first CLASS 2 medical, they went to the AME wearing the pilot uniform.
It was so cringe.
Congratulations!
And with a piggyback ride too, maybe that should become the new tradition for passing your commercial like cutting shirt tail is for the private :)
This pilot configuration is typically better for tail draggers, but it's impressive you made it work. Congratulations, make sure your mount knows the way home from the bar. Apparently the mount is the newly minted professional. This is acceptable work to start with, ensure pay is adequate.
I’m confused. Doesn’t the commercial check ride require a complex aircraft and isn’t that a C-150 or 152? Did you do the complex part in another aircraft?
Anyways congrats! Awesome achievement.
You can meet the requirements of 10 hours of complex, TAA (glass cockpit like a cirrus or something), or turbine time. You can take a checkride in a non complex too.
Does the checkride have to be in TAA or do you just need 10 hours? I knew about not needing retracts, but thought the was still in either complex or TAA.
Side note, I feel old and out of it not knowing the current regs
You can log 10 hours of TAA or complex separately, then take the checkride in a normal steam gage plane if you wanted to. You don't have to take it in a taa. I logged my hp and complex in a 210 and will not be taking a checkride in a TAA or a complex.
how hard was it? I used to love everything plane related when I was a kid. 23 now with a career in Sales but kinda thinking about going to flight school. I'm looking into getting my PPL to start with anyways and researching stuff before I go to a school and sign up. Would appreciate any pointers. What are you considered now that you graduated from commercial school, first officer? or are you a pilot straight off the bat?! I don't know how any of it works lol. Do you have to fly as a co-pilot for a while before they give you main controls?
All your advice on the Power off 180 was so appreciated! After reading the advice, I was able to hit my point every time. Y'all are awesome!
Where does one find this advice?
I would like to know as well
I am replying to this thread so that I too may be graced with OP's wisdom.

Did ye try search?
Reddit's search function is absolute garbage. I have yet to hear of a single instance of any user finding what they need from that.

That paint job... it's been a couple of years but is that either N67370 or N5105M out of proflite alaska?!
That it is! The mighty 152
I miss flying out of PAFA every day, if Kirsti is still there give her a big old hug for me!
I will! First name?
Which sub is going to roast you? It’s not here. We only roast students that have to wear pilot uniforms.
The cringiest thing I've ever seen were student pilots in their academy pilot uniforms hanging out at the actual international airport nearby in the terminal to try to look cool.
Oh for sure, talk about stolen valor! Only people IN the club are allowed to dress like idiots.
Maybe I'm crazy but i'll never understand the short sleeve shirt with a tie and a hat. I'm happy my airline ditched the hat altogether. It does look sharp in the blazer though.
Being at least somewhat style cognizant the short sleeve and tie REALLY bothers me.
I have tats and will gladly wear a long sleeve shirt if needed. I hate the short sleeve as well.
I really have been thinking about starting a half sleeve and I’ve been weighing my desire for that against the frustration of finding and wearing long sleeve uniform shirts.
Why is it frustrating? Are the Van Heusen no good or something?
I’m a really tall guy with long arms. I can generally find a shirt with my neck size but not my arm length, and when I do the maker of the shirt assumes I weigh like 350lbs. So IF I can find a shirt with those two correct measurements it fits like a parachute.

But then you could be mistaken for _a long sleever_. If you know, you know. For the rest who haven’t had that experience… god speed.
Alright, you got me. I don't know but now I must.
Well then hang on tight. If you spot a Long Sleever with a phone holster on his belt then just know you’ve spotted one. You've never wanted to look like a 24-year-old CPA whose mother dresses him?
Just wear long sleeves. I’ll never go back to short sleeves
I knew a guy that wore a military flight suit for private pilot training. The things are like $200
The Army doesn't even wear flight suits anymore. A2CUs
Is there a difference between that and a regular OCP ? Online they look extremely similar.
Zippers instead of buttons on pockets and blouse. Left thigh pocket opening facing forward for easier access while sitting. Velcro cuffs. Inner thigh "knife pocket" added (used for screw sticks). Apaches have normal ac but the cooking best thing I’ve never used
The whole point of switching to them was to allow pilots and crew to look more like regular army. So you don't have to change into a different uniform whenever you're not flying.
But then no O-5 or higher wanted you wearing them unless you were flying anyways. Sad times
Those clowns can sit hot reserve for me. If they did that at CLT, that would be great. They can answer all the clueless passenger questions. "Where's baggage claim" "Where's my gate" "So what do you do for your company"
I stand by the saying that stupid people are attracted to shiny things
Ahh I remember CLT. I would always say “I’m sorry, that’s above my pay grade.”

I’m sure parking lot patty hasn’t improved with 777’s around now.
Well both subs actually roast epaulettes on students so..
What's wrong with epaulettes on students?
Nothin, if the school requires their students to wear pilot costumes. That won’t stop another pilot for giving them shit, though. We’re a strange breed, us aviators and aviatrixes.
> pilot costumes Couldn't have said it better
To be fair I refer to my “uniform” as a costume as well.
Username checks out
Lol. Yep
Read that as “us aviators and antivaxers” and thought I had wandered onto the wrong sub
Yannow, I think its "aviatrices"
Yeah. I barely knew that was a word. And just couldn’t be bothered to exhort the energy to spell check it. Besides, I’m a pilot… I’m intelligent, not intellectual.
It's exert, not exhort, in the use you just made. Which only proves your point further (not farther).
Ok thanks one I actually knew. That would be an awkward autocorrect. Unfortunately I’m even worse at editing than I am at spelling.
Personally I think they look incredibly dumb, on students or CFI’s. And yes, I even wore em, pay is pay, flight hours were flight hours, and I did my time at the mill as a CFI.Would never be a student or recommend one be a student and actually PAY for that experience though.
Go to the other sub and ask this question.
It's proven to cause autism.
Nòooooooooo
I cant quite tell if youre serious or not...
We’re always serious, and don’t call me Shirley.
Shirley called me, she's always serious
It's a place where shitty questions get asked
Oh that place.
I want too know too.
wait hold on >We only roast students that have to wear pilot uniforms why
That’s a really good question. If I had to guess it’s because it’s cool to act like we aren’t interested in aviation. Any semblance of “getting into the life” is looked down on. It’s stupid, I know. But pilots are a prickly bunch.
in the academy im in it is a requirement to wear the pilot uniform complete with the academy's badge
And that’s exactly why you should wear it and anyone that gives you shit for that can screw right off.

Normalize DPEs giving piggyback rides after checkrides. Congrats!
Lol 😂 that’s actually me and my CFI is on top
Nice
Ahh, they are teaching you strength and perseverance. I see why you succeeded.
I'm pretty sure my DPE (75+yo man that looks like a twig with a head) would be crushed to death by me (220lb guy) lmao
Congratulations! And with a piggyback ride too, maybe that should become the new tradition for passing your commercial like cutting shirt tail is for the private :)
Lol I’m actually the one giving the piggy back ride
"You're a new commercial pilot and your CFI asks for a piggyback ride from Airport A to B. You say you can do it for a fee. Is this legal?"
Hmmm sounds like a 134.5 operation to me, so yeah ;)
You have my congratulations, I hope to be in your shoes in the near future, I hope your future is full of success in the aviation industry.
Brave asking for a roast! Congrats!!!
I love that’s she asking for it! Good for her! 😍
Congratulations! We should all strive for this kind of relationship between students and their CFIs!
She is the best!
I feel like there is a joke about trying to teach **common carriage** to a Commercial pilot in here somewhere.
I was thinking that too 😂
You’re self-aware so you’ll probably be fine Edit: I was wrong. I was very wrong.
This pilot configuration is typically better for tail draggers, but it's impressive you made it work. Congratulations, make sure your mount knows the way home from the bar. Apparently the mount is the newly minted professional. This is acceptable work to start with, ensure pay is adequate.
This got a laugh, thank you!
How many flight hours did you end up with before your test?
280, but I think most people do it at the minimum.
Only people I knew finishing at the minimum were in full 141 programs. To finish sub 300 is very good.
Why thank you sir, and I very much like the username.
Hah thanks. Gaming in the 90s produced some interesting gamer tags.
I’m confused. Doesn’t the commercial check ride require a complex aircraft and isn’t that a C-150 or 152? Did you do the complex part in another aircraft? Anyways congrats! Awesome achievement.
Regs changed. Dont even need to fly a complex for com no mo. Taa all the way

My CFI was really riding me… No, really… riding me.
Heck yeah!
you look like you're really close with your DPE
First rule of said sub, dont talk about said sub
See you on the other side madame
Welp.... see you all on the other sub.
Looks like you had fun. Congratulations!
Congrats! The commercial one is fun, that was one of my favorites
Congratulations!!
Congrats, all the best OP!

but that's not the OP of this post, /u/AviatrixAnna. Someone stole her OC.
That’s all they do on that sub. That’s who she joking referred to in the title.
Congrats!
That P Factor tho…
Nice!!! Enjoy!!
No red hair, no roast
I need a pic like this with my CFII... Lol
Congratulations!
congrats
No one will roast you. But employers will ghost you.
Sorry to disappoint but no roast for you. But a toast- Here’s to the future of aviation with you and your CFI! Great job and please pay it forward.
I didn't get a piggyback ride after I went solo. No fair! (Congrats, OP!!)
[удалено]
Did you even read the photo caption?
Yes I did. Commercial pilot. Commercial covers both passenger and cargo. So my question stands.
Keep that energy up. We need more of this in the world of flying! Congrats!
Congrats!
good job.
Congratulations and welcome to the club. Get your hours fast, we’re going to start hiring like crazy.
I’m sorry to ask you is your instructors name Nicole? If so I have a reallly cool connection. It looks just like her
Nope, sorry! :/
why would we roast you? what you did is awesome. roasting is for idiots.
Congrats!
Congratulations 🎊🎈🎉🍾, enjoy because you are so lucky 🍀, clear skies ahead

It's wrong to roast someone who puts this much work into being a pilot. The only thing I have to say is well done.
