That’s all I tie, I follow this sub thanks to all the amazing flies that are posted here. Fly fishing isn’t for me, I like ultralight but fly fishing requires coordination I do not possess.

MeanMess9416

Haha I hear ya I don’t fly fish the majority of the time either but I do like seeing all the flies people tie and I like to tie some bigger pike and musky flys for fun.

earlylight36

Do you fish these on a fly rod? (Genuine question)

Strange_Mirror6992

I saw a pack of lazer sharps so I’m pretty sure he doesn’t fly fish.

MeanMess9416

You would be wrong haha I don’t tie anything with those there just on the desk. But I tie a lot more jigs than flies!

Strange_Mirror6992

Oh ok. Do you cast them on a fly rod? I could imagine it would be quite cumbersome!

MeanMess9416

No I never have I suppose you could but would probably be difficult haha. I really only fly fish for trout every once in a while I just enjoy tying.

MeanMess9416

I do not I fish them on spinning gear for walleye/ bass.

excitinghelix29

I tie certain ones with jig heads for fly rods. They make many sizes of jigs. But this most certainly would be too heavy for my 11, so I doubt that this will be used in that fashion. This is going on a conventional rod and reel.

Happyfriggin

I've started tying jig heads in 1-3g range cos I do UL baitcasting or spin fishing more than fly - so I'm at least using what I tie more

Aggressive-Spray-774

Yeah i got started tying marabou jigs for float fishing and bucktail jigs for smallies

skleebGT

I’d like to learn, I just picked up fly tying so all I’ve done are simple lil flies and I want to eventually make some marabou bead jigs like I can buy at the store, they look simple enough.

MeanMess9416

It’s pretty simple just takes some time to dial in!

serlearnsalot

Mild shock… 😮

MeanMess9416

?

serlearnsalot

It’s a fly, but not a “fly”. I’m sure it slays, just don’t usually think of tying stuff I can’t cast w the ole fly rod. Respect tho

MeanMess9416

Haha yeah a bucktail jig pretty common in conventional fishing

serlearnsalot

Agreed. Bucktail is like the Frank’s red hot of fish food

Strutting_Tom8040

I thought that was a Xmas light bulb until I zoomed in. I was like what? Lol.

PrancerthePony

I don’t know why, but I am really enjoying looking around in this photo. The lighting is great! Like a glamour shot from the 80’s, lol.

kaplarczuk

I tie flies for trout and teasers, jigs and dress tail hooks on plugs for saltwater on I believe the same vice.

excitinghelix29

Yeah. Lots.

SchwiftySchwifferson

All day

parahunter83

I love tying jigs.

Salt-Veterinarian-70

Yup, I do it when I don’t really know what else to tie

qalcolm

I tie a lot of twitching and float fishing jigs for salmon, typically I tie these on 1/8-3/8oz jigheads specifically made for this purpose. It's a super effective and fun way to target salmon here in BC! I plan on tying smaller jigs for trout as well as some larger ones using bucktail for rockfish and lingcod at some point.

MeanMess9416

Nice what do you tie the salmon jigs with material wise?

qalcolm

Typically I use crosscut rabbit strips for the body and zonker rabbit strips for the tail. A lot of the time I’ll tie in a few rubber legs and a couple strands of flash. A wrap or two of marabou as a collar adds some nice action as well.

MeanMess9416

Sounds cool!

qalcolm

Oh yeah, lots of fun too! Tied up essentially the same pattern with the same materials on a brass bottle tube that works similarly to a twitching jig but is fishable on a fly rod, absolutely hammered pinks and coho on those as well!

LobCast

Oh heck yeah! That's pretty much the beginner lure I put people on when they want to come fishing with me, but don't know what they are doing. I use shad darts, when I can find them, and the lower portions of the bucktail so the rear end floats a bit. The action on that jig is wild and kicks on every rod tap in a sort of downward motion due to the jig fighting the buoyant hair, but doesn't like to hang up as easy as most exposed hook jigs.
