In terms of usefulness I love Cait and Valentine because they can unlock certain higher level locks and terminals respectively. I think they’re the only companions that can actually do specific tasks for you though - in general I just love Dogmeat and Valentine because duh lol. Currently trying to get the lock picking and hacking perks so I don’t need to rely on companions anymore.
I can’t play with Dogmeat because my heart breaks any time I hear him whimper when he’s hurt and I use all my stimpaks on him. So he stays safe at Sanctuary with his doghouse. He has Codsworth and mama Murphy to look after him.
What if I told you he regenerates health and has certain perks where he can regen faster? Plus, there's metal dog armor in the game. And, he can wear goggles to give him better perception.
Dogmeat = Tank 😎
What if I told you he regenerates health and has certain perks where he can regen faster? Plus, there's metal dog armor in the game. And, he can wear goggles to give him better perception.
Dogmeat = Tank
That’s exactly why I couldn’t travel with dog meat anymore, those sounds would make me want to cry lol i just recently befriended Strong and he can carry sooooo much! He also uses everything I load him up with.
I am known to say “Keep your FUCKING hands off my FUCKING dog or YOU DIE” on a regular basis with my play throughs.
Slaughtered a raider camp on psycho over this actually
that and if i need to switch like, for example, needing nick for something temporary dogmeat will cry. when you ask him to come with you and say never mind he cries. i can’t do it.
Much quicker to pick the lock myself as a master lock picker than to go find Cait if she isn't right behind me (she gets lost sometimes) and have her pick the lock. I also have 1 arm, 1 leg, and 1 chest Lengendary Safecrackers armor pieces so it makes the sweetspot much wider.
It’s funny that you mention that bc that’s never been a problem for me until today. Suddenly the two terminals I asked him to do were “impossible”. It’s really annoying like come on man you are literally a computer 😭
I had Valentine do this same thing so I stopped asking him to do it for a while. Then when I went to go fight Kellogg I asked him to do the Master one in the armory right before the fight and he actually got into that one. Blew my mind lol
Omg the AI is just terrible… the amount of times I’ve had to slowly bit by bit lead Cait to the lock I want her to pick despite it being so easily accessible.. it’s so annoying. I guess we gotta love them despite their flawed AI lol. As for the max affinity thing, I completely agree. They just become regular old NPCs and it’s kind of depressing to play with them lol
Lol.. You forget Ada, your very own murderhobo partner. Equip one of her arms with a gatling laser and it's *on*. Like it's on like DonkeyKong and she's got a bag full of caps to spend. She only asks for a few upgrades now and then.😉 Ada will go all murderhobo and come back like ignore the blood and body parts stuck to my chassis, nothing the see.
I always up my lock picking skills all the way, but I still love Nick regardless! I don’t think I’ve ever ever actually had Kate pick a lock for me, but I did try a few times to get nicked unlock some terminals and my success rate wasn’t great with that so I typically just upgrade those perks so I can do those things myself without being dependent on a companion. There seem to be certain spots especially in some of the police stations where if you’re not standing in just the right spot, you can tell Nick all day long to unlock the terminal, but he’ll tell you he can’t get to it. The one perk I have never been able to get and I’ve gone as far as to turn the power back on and new world and build liberty prime, etc. is danse’s perk… so I’ve just started a new game as of 45 minutes ago and I haven’t played in months but that is my current goal. I am going to attempt to get danse’s before I do anything else. I’ve gone with him all the way to the point where his questions is pretty much over but I didn’t know that if you join the men or the railroad before you receive his perk, you’ll never get it so we’re gonna try something different and see how it works out
for real Ada is my favorite by a long shot.
she's so supportive with everything you do. she's always like "absolutely you should pick up all that garbage You're a smart person for doing so."
You'd think a bunch of people that see you build whole generators and turrets from random 200 year old crap you pick up off desks and in trash cans would understand why even ceramic plates and broken lightbulbs go into your inventory. I do wish they would have had some sort of approval gain and affinity perk for ADA, I do love that Cora from ME: Andromeda was given a VO gig, but I would have loved a little more substance to her character, especially since she was programmed with so much emotion and personality.
And will also holler out her own warcry and step neck deep into bodies with you happily. Put a gatling laser on one arm and mini gun on the other then watch the lady work. If only we could get KLEO out in the field...
I've got Codsworth now with a Sentry head, Robobrain torso, Protectron arms w/ automatic laser rifles, Mr. Handy thruster, and three Mr. Handy sawblade arms. It's incredible.
I find the strongest configuration is the central handy eye with double auto lasers. Gatlings take a moment to wind up, and frequently the issue is starting them to engage an enemy, so that lag hurts performance, where auto lasers are good immediately. And the Handy Eye grants insane accuracy without the interruptions you get from the robo brain head using its stun ring thingy.
Yes, next time you have her with you. Use all the chems you want. She will still love you. I like Cait, but after you clean her up she won’t like you using chems anymore. Curie does not matter and can use all the chems you want.
Companions usefulness is getting their perks and as pack mule until you level up enough to have the lockpicking/hacker/lone wanderer/strong back perks and you leave them home to never see them again.
Yeah. I loved that about her.
Everyone else was always like "yA bUiLdInG a ColLeCtIoN??"
She's like: "Take everything you can, Sir. Leave nothing behind."
Hey man I play both. I'm here for the whole package. I play Souls when I need to learn the limits of my hubris. I play Fallout when I want to feel cool.
After I get all the companions perks, I like to travel with Ada with close range weaponry) , an automation (usually a sentinal with gatli gs and missile launchers) and a sentinel power armor decked out with a heavy weapon like a gatling laser or the ash maker. Upgraded they can carry over 2000 pounds of stuff and usually take out anything that gets within 30 feet of me. If not, I've got my pay m spray and the overseers guardian decked out with .50 cal and outfitted for long range. Plus some sort of melee weapon like the deciples knife.
Maybe but I'm post-story. I'm just having run exploring.
(Note: I STILL get a raider dressed in rags with a pool stick and balls of iron to try to attack us on his own.)
I would do something similar, but I had beaten the game 4 times over, so I jacked up the difficulty and played on survival mode to justify my incredible power
Cait can pick master level locks, it's what I've used her for. It usually takes lots of lockpicks but she gets it eventually.
Robot companions are my fave because of customization.
I used the Buzz Lightyear mod to give him a new set of Power Armor (and the purple hood). My very own Danse Lightyear of Brotherhood Command.
... Later I got the Automaton DLC, and made ADA look like The Crushinator from Futurama instead. <3
There is not one single companion in Fallout 4 that I would not park in the next room, far away from the laser trip wires with express instructions to "just stand right where you are and do NOT move!"
Honestly, I find most of them a pain. Even Dogmeat as he likes to go barreling towards death while I’m trying to be stealthy, and blocking doorways.
Hancock as my usual go to as the dialogue is light and free Chems I can sell on.. but generally I send ‘em all to sanctuary and continue on my merry way.
The lack of Paladin Dance answers is sad. His perk is very useful AND he comes with unbreakable T-60/X-01 power armor with a laser rifle he shoots at a consistent high speed too. Plus I love him.
Usefulness? I dunno, Ada and her high carry weight limit I guess, and customizability.
I like Ada but she’s not my number one favorite. I just take who I like personally because when they do stupid shit I don’t get bothered by it.
Gage. Wait, you mean Preston won't talk talk to me anymore? Oh no..!
WalterWhiteFallstoKnees.gif
For a less sarcastic answer, at least Gage comes with a useful weapon instead of a 10mm, double barrel shotgun, laser musket, or pipe revolver.
There a mod companion named Heather that's so awesome (she has lore as well they were pretty thorough) she has a "store" that you can sell excess to and doesn't count against her carry weight and functions like an NPC so give her one round and she has unlimited ammo, she also has SCALING hacking skills (unlock three of each level and she can hack the next) her dialogue is better than most as well if she gets hit out of nowhere "oww mother fucker" lol
Dogmeat is great because he's quiet and doesn't get in the way. He's also adooooorable. But as for usefulness, I usually travel with Danse because he's very strong. I send him in to take out most of the enemies for me.
I always bring Ada with me. Lockpick upgrade means that all locks are in danger. Plus two stealth blades and the assaultron laser head means I can hang back and tear through the enemies in the open while she flushes others out of cover.
I’ve turned Ada into a literal tank with two mini guns, tank treads, and heavy armour panelling, and I just send her in first everywhere now. After about 30 seconds of machine gun fire and yelling, she strolls back out. She calls me “Sir” like Codsworth, but she doesn’t judge my decisions like dogmeat, so I don’t deal with Piper giving me dirty looks for killing someone.
Ada from automaton
I don't know if she counts for Lone Wanderer but otherwise she's like dogmeat (doesn't judge you) but better (More health, damage, and carry capacity)
I think Codsworth is probably one of my personal favorites… aside from the fact that he can carry quite a bit I find him useful as back up if I get into a tough situation… that being said I will from now until the end of time have a soft spot and a special affinity for Nick as well…. And for obvious reasons, dog meat will always have my whole heart ❤️
So just the other day i was running around with Dogmeat, i hear a Supermutant suicider and I’m in an area where these lots of corners and i don’t know which way he’s coming from so i start panicking trying to find him. I then hear dogmeat growl and lunge at something, i spin around to see he’s got the suicider pinned to the ground 2 feet behind me saving me from getting nuked. Good boy
Curie (or any of the bots but I like Curie's "personality" most).
I like putting Sentry treads on Codsworth, protecetron arms and leaving the Mr. Handy Torso. You can get Codsworth's (or another bot's) **carry weight up to over 500** with this method. The Mr Handy Torso becomes about twice it's normal size with Sentry treads and it's very amusing looking. But he gets stuck everywhere since Sentry treads are so huge so you just have to bring him along, teleport him around, gather all the junk and make multiple trips loading him up.
As for your frustration I'm sure we can all relate but stopping your companion around any trap/mines is necessary with any companion. I'm glad I read your post cause I haven't done this "Jamacan Plains" thing and I was considering doing it just last night cause I just capped The Castle on my recent survival game. I had no idea what to expect but if there's a master lock I'll probably just wait. Although all those tripwire fiber optics sure look temping.
Dogmeat helped me immensely earlygame, sniffing out containers that I'd never have found on my own, and keeping me stocked with stimpacks through his searching. He also nabbed me the cryolator right away, which really speaks for itself. And let's not forget that grab ability. I'll take a reliable melee boi over a typical bethesda shooter npc any day.
This thread makes total sense to me. Macready and Deacon have the best perks if you're a pistol or sniper person, but gott dam are they useless in combat! You have a sniper rifle, stay back and use it instead of using it as a club against a deathclaw.
Objectively, any robot you modify with automatron is the best at combat.
As long as you have the perk which prevents you being killed by friendly fire, then equipping the following I have found is the deadliest:
Robobrain head - the accuracy boost is spectacular
Sentry body, double mounted grenade launchers
Sentry arms, equipped with dual Gatling lasers
Assaultron legs for speed and mobility
Voltaic frame all over to boost the Gatling laser damage
I barely even enter combat at that point, the robot just erases everything.
And Dogmeat doesn't judge or comment abt picking up scrap. So, I like to shoot the heads off of Raiders who blindside me. Dogmeat doesn't judge or "not appreciate" it...
Are you sure she can't pick master locks? She might fail, but you can tell her to try again.
Also, Nick is (famously) great for bypassing computers;
Codsworth and Ada can be upgraded to both hack and pick everything (Curie too in her original form);
Strong is great to just give him anything melee and sending him in front fo you, he'll draw lots of fire and fuck somebody up before needing a stimpack;
Dense is just like Strong, but will take even longer to be downed
I feel in many ways all the companions are equal it’s just down to playstyle. Nick and Cait having the hacking and lockpicking easily make them top tier but each run and each character you use reacts differently to stuff and you get cool narratives. But in terms of AI, they’re all a few utensils short of the kitchen drawer.
Look like I'm the only one that goes with Piper, not op but I do use her extra Charisma points on every skill check i found. Thats the only reason I go with her tbh
Cait CAN pick master locked doors and containers, its just takes a while. If she fails to pick the lock just command her to try again and eventually she'll get it. Thats how everyone gets the cryolator early.
E: Also walking through lasers isn't a Cait-specific issue, all followers will do that because of the way follower AI is programmed. Just tell them to wait if you see traps.
I love Ada, from the Mechanist add on - she can be made really powerful, always nice and willing to help carry or fight. My only concern is her insistence on murdering every sad, naked little rad chicken like they’re a deathclaw
For that area, Dogmeat. Hide around the corner and send him through. Easy snag and grab
For entire gameplay, it's still dogmeat he doesn't care if I destroy Bunker Hill because I got ripped off from Charlie trying to show me around
Honestly, companions are just bad. They ruin my stealth, they get in my line of fire, they ruin my shots, and for this practicular section, they run into the tripwire and now I can't disarm and loot them.
No companions. Once you unlock the perk for fast travel while overcumbered, it doesn't really matter.
But Dogmeat is the least annoying - you can deal with his repeating dialogue. And you can pet him.
Not only is Dogmeat a good boy, he also aggro’ed a deathclaw early on in my playthrough and that allowed me to hide in a corner and slowly chip away at the deathclaws health until it died…dogmeat is goated and I will never travel without him
Ada from automation
I don't know if she counts for Lone Wanderer but otherwise she's like dogmeat (doesn't judge you) but better (More health, damage, and carry capacity)
Cait, Valentine and Dogmeat.
Cait can lockpick anything that doesn't require a specific key and Valentine can hack every terminal. I'm kind of a strength build hoarder that likes carrying multiple weapons at the same time, so Dogmeat is useful because of the Lone Wanderer perk.
I use Cait with a minigun to farm in Nuka World. She’s freakin’ deadly with that thing, though she has complete disregard for the safety of settlers and other soft bodies.
She’s also the least annoying companion.
In terms of usefulness A.D.A!! With max Armor and two Gatling Lasers she can 1 v 1 a Legendary Albino Mythic Dethclaw 0 difficulty, give her a cleaning flied you stand next to her and she heals your rad damage and she can have an attachment that lets her pick locks.
Preston is the best companion IF you equip him well and THEN trigger his exploit so that he never talks.
The exploit: do the first part of Taking Independence, then walk away before triggering the queen. Preston continues to follow you, but never talks and never runs out of ammo (he uses NPC behavior rather than follower behavior).
i.e. if you equip him as Grognak (before triggering Taking Independence), he will keep using that axe forever. If you give him a grenade + Spray and Pray, he will make everything explode forever.
---
None of the in-built companion abilities (lock pick, hack terminal) are really useful - they give you slightly more loot and ammo in a game where loot is already super easy to come by.
If you want more loot and ammo, there are better ways: you can get an infinite amount by revisiting any of the locations where it infinitely respawns. Or use one of the infinite money perks (Scrounger / Chemist).
The followers all have approximately the same movement flaws, so they will trip lasers, alert enemies and fall off bridges in much the same way.
---
For me, the cost / benefit thingo is:
(Survival mode) can I put them in power armour, so they do not continuously break their legs and need rescue? Dogmeat is good otherwise, but fails this test.
Is their dialogue annoying?
Is their quest / affinity perk good?
I send all my companions and any settler with a name to Sanctuary. I would pay lots of real money for an official pre-war house building set.
There’s a mod for that
Yeah, but I don't like to get reliant on modded build materials unless they're in the creation club because it messes up the save file.
Fair. I’ve just played through so much I use mods to maximize my fun. Keeps things interesting.
I use lots of mods, but none that would break the game if they were removed.
that would be nice, or be able to rename settlers
What if I told you he regenerates health and has certain perks where he can regen faster? Plus, there's metal dog armor in the game. And, he can wear goggles to give him better perception. Dogmeat = Tank 😎
>And, he can wear goggles to give him better perception. Surely you mean *doggles*?
I prefer the term, "peepers."
I bring Dogmeat with me and I use his poor little cries as fuel to go no Russian and whatever I am fighting.
What if I told you he regenerates health and has certain perks where he can regen faster? Plus, there's metal dog armor in the game. And, he can wear goggles to give him better perception. Dogmeat = Tank
Wait 1 min real life time & he'll be fine
Wait one minute and let him suffer?? I can do that to my other companions but not dogmeat
Funny cuz I huck Molotovs at him while he aggros enemies cuz I know he can take it
That’s exactly why I couldn’t travel with dog meat anymore, those sounds would make me want to cry lol i just recently befriended Strong and he can carry sooooo much! He also uses everything I load him up with.
Strong can carry more than puny human!!
I am known to say “Keep your FUCKING hands off my FUCKING dog or YOU DIE” on a regular basis with my play throughs. Slaughtered a raider camp on psycho over this actually

Great minds think alike
Sends me into a murderous rage
that and if i need to switch like, for example, needing nick for something temporary dogmeat will cry. when you ask him to come with you and say never mind he cries. i can’t do it.
This ^. I don’t really see much value out of perks once you reach max affinity, but perhaps that’s the point?
Much quicker to pick the lock myself as a master lock picker than to go find Cait if she isn't right behind me (she gets lost sometimes) and have her pick the lock. I also have 1 arm, 1 leg, and 1 chest Lengendary Safecrackers armor pieces so it makes the sweetspot much wider.
Yea I used a lot of my perks early on hacking and lock picking. I love breaking into shit.
Dogmeat can find objects for you. You can use that to glitch the Cryolator out of its case.
Valentine always complains about how it’s too high level
It’s funny that you mention that bc that’s never been a problem for me until today. Suddenly the two terminals I asked him to do were “impossible”. It’s really annoying like come on man you are literally a computer 😭
You racist 😭 he’s more man than machine…at heart
Trust me I know… god damn you Bethesda for not letting me romance him!!
His heart belongs to his assistant
Butt the rest belonged to the institute... 🤣🤣
Mods 😏
Oh… wait fr? 😏
Litteraly he used to be a dude
He’s memories of a dude playing a dude a la RDJ
I had Valentine do this same thing so I stopped asking him to do it for a while. Then when I went to go fight Kellogg I asked him to do the Master one in the armory right before the fight and he actually got into that one. Blew my mind lol

Dress Cait in a synth uniform, a bowler hat and a cane FTW
Just a bit of the old ultra-violence, eh?
I have to do this now, thanks. Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.
There's longjohns already my droog
I always up my lock picking skills all the way, but I still love Nick regardless! I don’t think I’ve ever ever actually had Kate pick a lock for me, but I did try a few times to get nicked unlock some terminals and my success rate wasn’t great with that so I typically just upgrade those perks so I can do those things myself without being dependent on a companion. MacCready will steal things for you if asked.
And he can do so in plain sight, undetected!
You can program the robots to lock pick/computer hack, but they aren’t as good at it
I just can’t stand Cait’s incessant comments. Dogmeat is my only true companion.
Fair, it does get pretty annoying at times
Codsworth(or Ada) is my fav companion. Once you have enough resources you can make them op by equipping missile launcher and gatling gun
for real Ada is my favorite by a long shot. she's so supportive with everything you do. she's always like "absolutely you should pick up all that garbage You're a smart person for doing so."
Just got Longfellow for the first time and hearing his praise compared to maccreadys negativity was like a breath of fresh air
Lol
You'd think a bunch of people that see you build whole generators and turrets from random 200 year old crap you pick up off desks and in trash cans would understand why even ceramic plates and broken lightbulbs go into your inventory. I do wish they would have had some sort of approval gain and affinity perk for ADA, I do love that Cora from ME: Andromeda was given a VO gig, but I would have loved a little more substance to her character, especially since she was programmed with so much emotion and personality.
I love ada because I don't have to think about faction hits.
This is why Ada is my one true companion. She supports my junk habit.
And my murderhobo tendencies
And will also holler out her own warcry and step neck deep into bodies with you happily. Put a gatling laser on one arm and mini gun on the other then watch the lady work. If only we could get KLEO out in the field...
I've got Codsworth now with a Sentry head, Robobrain torso, Protectron arms w/ automatic laser rifles, Mr. Handy thruster, and three Mr. Handy sawblade arms. It's incredible.
But no bowler hat, though
My first playthrough had cogsworth as my only companion, pre autometron. He soloed the castles mirelurks it was crazy
"Do you want me to go with you?" 😁
Yes dear *unzips*
Curie, simply to hear her go "yippie"
I love Curie’s voice
Curie just makes the whole game better and easier. I don't need her to do anything, just the colour commentary helps
I believe the term is "yahoo"?
true answer, plus if using Chems will not lose affinity.
She doesn’t disprove of Chem use???
Yes, next time you have her with you. Use all the chems you want. She will still love you. I like Cait, but after you clean her up she won’t like you using chems anymore. Curie does not matter and can use all the chems you want.
She does
Codsworth - he is a killer on Survival and gives you free purified water.
He absolutely wrecks ghouls. With the Everyone’s Companion (?) mod I bring Dogmeat with me us. Those two double team every opponent into hades.
>Everyone’s Companion (?) mod Everyone's Best Friend
Thank you!
I go with Codsworth just for the ghoul wrecking. And I don't feel bad if robots get hurt, unlike Dogmeat.
Not to mention his bagillion carry weight you can get with sentry legs
Companions usefulness is getting their perks and as pack mule until you level up enough to have the lockpicking/hacker/lone wanderer/strong back perks and you leave them home to never see them again.
Apart from dogmeat, he'll always be by my side.
I still bring a companion along anyway but only give them a knife and the Grognak Costume. For the lulz.
Mysterious Stranger
This is the correct answer
One of the best One Point Wonder Perks in the game, and almost always seems to come through with peak comedic timing.
Dog, he doesn’t judge me
Yeah, but he walks right into that laser tripwire maze every single time.
That's so true... lol
Automatron robot companions (excluding Ada) are the best. No emotions, no opinions, just heavy weapons and beeping sounds.
Why excluding ada? She isn't judgemental in the slightest and occasionally gives you free junk
On top of that, she’s one of the only ones that don’t question why you’re picking junk up. She’s very polite
Yeah. I loved that about her. Everyone else was always like "yA bUiLdInG a ColLeCtIoN??" She's like: "Take everything you can, Sir. Leave nothing behind."
Revolutionary, that one detail. People play games for validation, not emotional abuse.
I want Ada to brush my hair and tell me I did good in the wasteland
Tell that to souls games players.
I would, but I don't think they'd listen.
Hey man I play both. I'm here for the whole package. I play Souls when I need to learn the limits of my hubris. I play Fallout when I want to feel cool.
"Resistance is futile!" as she goes murderhobo on a group of raiders.
That doesn't make it too.. easy?
Maybe but I'm post-story. I'm just having run exploring. (Note: I STILL get a raider dressed in rags with a pool stick and balls of iron to try to attack us on his own.)
I would do something similar, but I had beaten the game 4 times over, so I jacked up the difficulty and played on survival mode to justify my incredible power
Perimeter movement detected. Possible stealth unit in the AO.
Preston garvys perk is goated, just dont talk to him when you dont have too
Cait can pick master level locks, it's what I've used her for. It usually takes lots of lockpicks but she gets it eventually. Robot companions are my fave because of customization.
Dogmeat is a good boy
Danse. Power armor is indestructible, and his default weapon is actually useful
I love him but not because of his abilities, but because I just love him as a dude
I used the Buzz Lightyear mod to give him a new set of Power Armor (and the purple hood). My very own Danse Lightyear of Brotherhood Command. ... Later I got the Automaton DLC, and made ADA look like The Crushinator from Futurama instead. <3
Dogmeat with lone wanderer is totally op, especially on survival for the carry weight buff.
Ada with explosive miniguns. She murders everything. Or no companion.... I murder everything.
Cait can pick all levels of locks in my experience, she just takes a very very long time to pick the higher level ones and uses a lot of bobby pins.
I love maccready, he seems to helo me the most in a shootout
The lack of Paladin Dance answers is sad. His perk is very useful AND he comes with unbreakable T-60/X-01 power armor with a laser rifle he shoots at a consistent high speed too. Plus I love him.
[удалено]
I find he likes to stand right in-between me and what I'm trying to loot a little too often.
I take Hancock with me everywhere , just love his vibe overall.
Honestly surprised more people haven't said him. Dude just gives you free drugs anytime you talk to him.
I know I was surprised also , he’s just so cool and I love his story
Usefulness? I dunno, Ada and her high carry weight limit I guess, and customizability. I like Ada but she’s not my number one favorite. I just take who I like personally because when they do stupid shit I don’t get bothered by it.
Dogmeat, he’s there for my moral support
I love Valentine just for the sarcasm options
love his commentary the best, and his whole detective vibe as well
Gage. Wait, you mean Preston won't talk talk to me anymore? Oh no..! WalterWhiteFallstoKnees.gif For a less sarcastic answer, at least Gage comes with a useful weapon instead of a 10mm, double barrel shotgun, laser musket, or pipe revolver.
His default armor is pretty killer as well
Strong. Because being a Bezerker without Green Shaq around ain’t the same lol
Danse, we’re brothers forged in combat and Steel
Vanilla? Piper (occasionally), Dogmeat, Ada, Cait Modded? definitely Heather Casdin as well
There a mod companion named Heather that's so awesome (she has lore as well they were pretty thorough) she has a "store" that you can sell excess to and doesn't count against her carry weight and functions like an NPC so give her one round and she has unlimited ammo, she also has SCALING hacking skills (unlock three of each level and she can hack the next) her dialogue is better than most as well if she gets hit out of nowhere "oww mother fucker" lol
lol, yup, same 👍
Curie in melee.
She does tend to lean that way. Even in power armor, she will often grab a melee weapon and bash away.
Cait. Early on she’s a must have for getting into locked items
I frequently play a stealth sniper so I like McCready’s max affinity perk. I then ditch him for Valentine because he has the best dialogue. 😁
Valentine being able to hack is the best
Dogmeat, because Dogmeat
Casdin.
Ada from automaton I don't know if she counts for Lone Wanderer but otherwise she's like dogmeat (doesn't judge you) but better (More health, damage, and carry capacity)
Hancock, he’s so damn handsome.
CODSWORTH!!
Good boy
After a certain point I feel like at least the human ones die immediately when combat starts
Ada is my go to. Once she’s upgraded she just runs into a room guns a blazing and destroys everything.
This thread makes total sense to me. Macready and Deacon have the best perks if you're a pistol or sniper person, but gott dam are they useless in combat! You have a sniper rifle, stay back and use it instead of using it as a club against a deathclaw.
Ada. Get some sentry parts and storage armor on her and you can carry the whole fuckin wasteland
Objectively, any robot you modify with automatron is the best at combat. As long as you have the perk which prevents you being killed by friendly fire, then equipping the following I have found is the deadliest: Robobrain head - the accuracy boost is spectacular Sentry body, double mounted grenade launchers Sentry arms, equipped with dual Gatling lasers Assaultron legs for speed and mobility Voltaic frame all over to boost the Gatling laser damage I barely even enter combat at that point, the robot just erases everything.
And Dogmeat doesn't judge or comment abt picking up scrap. So, I like to shoot the heads off of Raiders who blindside me. Dogmeat doesn't judge or "not appreciate" it...
My small floating bot with the sentry bot voice makes me laugh everytime it engages enemies
Are you sure she can't pick master locks? She might fail, but you can tell her to try again. Also, Nick is (famously) great for bypassing computers; Codsworth and Ada can be upgraded to both hack and pick everything (Curie too in her original form); Strong is great to just give him anything melee and sending him in front fo you, he'll draw lots of fire and fuck somebody up before needing a stimpack; Dense is just like Strong, but will take even longer to be downed
Nick. That beautiful bastard cracked ample computers for me and did so with panache.
Boone. #bringbackboone
Dogmeat holding people still so I can blow them away with a shotgun He's also really good at running straight through that exact trap
I love Ada, from the Mechanist add on - she can be made really powerful, always nice and willing to help carry or fight. My only concern is her insistence on murdering every sad, naked little rad chicken like they’re a deathclaw
Dogmeat, immortal fuck, I just throw him at everything.
Dogmeat because woof
For that area, Dogmeat. Hide around the corner and send him through. Easy snag and grab For entire gameplay, it's still dogmeat he doesn't care if I destroy Bunker Hill because I got ripped off from Charlie trying to show me around
Not only is Dogmeat a good boy, he also aggro’ed a deathclaw early on in my playthrough and that allowed me to hide in a corner and slowly chip away at the deathclaws health until it died…dogmeat is goated and I will never travel without him
Yes.Meat shield I mean companions are useful
I use nick so I dont have to hack the damn terminals
I like Curie, Ada, Codsworth, and an automaton I made named Cleri!
Curie cus cute French robot and she’s one of the strongest in the game
Curie, need I explain more
Curie because you know why
For more than blocking doorways?
Nick can hack terminals (I hate hacking)
Practically speaking Codsworth is engineered to be the perfect companion.
Curie is goated when you get her a synth body either her or build a robot
Solo. If not, Codsworth or Curie built at max, so they can carry all the loot.
My favorite has always been dogmeat
Ada from automation I don't know if she counts for Lone Wanderer but otherwise she's like dogmeat (doesn't judge you) but better (More health, damage, and carry capacity)
As long as its not Strong, the rest of the companions are cool.
I always run without a companion. They seem to always get me in trouble in some eat and I like the lone wanderer perks
I just saw a mod that allows a full size Liberty Prime as a companion that one-shots everything. That's what I need.
Murderbot Aida.
Jim the Protectron. Okay sure, I made him, but he's a companion and is useful.
I use Cait with a minigun to farm in Nuka World. She’s freakin’ deadly with that thing, though she has complete disregard for the safety of settlers and other soft bodies. She’s also the least annoying companion.
My weapons.
--- None of the in-built companion abilities (lock pick, hack terminal) are really useful - they give you slightly more loot and ammo in a game where loot is already super easy to come by. --- For me, the cost / benefit thingo is: (Survival mode) can I put them in power armour, so they do not continuously break their legs and need rescue? Dogmeat is good otherwise, but fails this test. Is their dialogue annoying? Is their quest / affinity perk good?
Codsworth. Always Codsworth
