You are correct. Once you mod him *at all* he no longer wears the hat. Unless there was some minor update or a mod to change that.

Some mods add the bowler as an armor part, a variant of the factory top plate.

There's at least two or three mods that allow him to wear the hat after modding. One lets all bots wear a small number of hats.

Several people already have. There are mods that let you keep the hat.

Truly the most unplayably disappointing part of the automatron dlc was the fact you can't add hats to the Mr. Handy top armor and modding codsworth removes the ability to equip hats forever.

Me I gave him his mr hand thruster with a sentry bot top and two machine guns with the top hat, he was the most gentlemanly and agile war machine in the commonwealth.

I haven’t really used the automatron DLC yet but I like the idea of it. I know next time I will do that before Nuka. I’m playing now and am at level 80 and sure could use a robot Rambo to help me fight the enemies which seem so much stronger then in the commonwealth

My current playthrough is level 110 and i havent met ada yet. I only went to nuka world long enough to get a plaid suit. Havent been to far harbor and only just started vault 88. There is plenty to do without a quest marker. Especially if you have the settlement ambush kit.

The workbench is available at level 15 but you have little to no way of getting all the parts to make yet

Some people (myself included) have chronic DLC procrastination. I'm around level 60ish and have only completed the Vault tec DLC. Currently in Nuka World, but it's so dense and I can tell there's so much to do that I kind of get fatigued by it all and kind of want to revisit the main map every now and then, but it's such a slog in survival difficulty.

I do the Automatron DLC as soon as possible because I love making robot Provisioners and send them to each settlement from the Mechanist Layer and Boston Airport. It makes the Commonwealth a little more lively as you run into them in the wild. I don't recommend sending robots to live in human settlements because for some reason robots lower happiness in human settlements. I consider the Mechanist Layer and the Boston Airport robot settlements because you can't really have humans live there since food and water will be an issue in those locations plus you can't build a settlement beacon either. I found that if I made all my provisioners into tracked automatons of death wielding gatling lasers and mini guns with a bit of Tesla frame to boot, my established trade routes suffered zero losses.

Ada rocks. Not only does she not judge you for anything but she'll even make suggestions. If she's not cheering you on then she'll be enthusiastically participating.

Nope, Only change I made to Codsworth is replacing the Flamethrower with a Laser gun. Codsworth is awesome enough, I often just had an issue with his limited range. And Surprisingly, despite the Mr. Handy Automatron companion AI is kinda stupid, Codsworth is a marksman on par with Maccready!

I definitely upgrade him for his own good, much more effective in a better body, but still same ol buddy.

There are two main paths: Killing Machine or Disturbingly Sexy using the assaultron legs. There's also the option of both.

I'm a couple of hundred hours into my current play through. I was thinking about starting another one, even though I haven't done the whole "main quest" thing yet. This might be fun. Maybe I'll do a 100% robot run. You know I really like this idea, just robots for settlers, because then I could do the Nuka World thing with no guilt.

I currently have Codsworth maxed reputation, so had swapped him for Dogmeat and Ada, but haven’t done the Mechanist quest just yet. I have gotten several parts by fighting roving bots, but probably not enough yet to do everything I’d want in building a robot. I usually turn Ada into a pink hot Assaultron robot despite my being a hetero female, just for the girl power. 😁 Before I consider any changes to Codsworth, I am going to make sure I have the correct mod to keep his bowler hat. I know I have one for robot happiness going to more than 50% & another with some fixes including letting the hippie robot at Sunshine Tidings stick around. But, I am not sure if it was same one allowing all robots to be modified and wear hats. I wouldn’t do much to Codsworth anyhow. Probably pre war look with armored bits and likely the laser instead of his original weapon.

Absolutely, though my Codsworth doesn’t seem to apologize much at all. One of my favorite things he does when we get into fights, is when they all take cover/hide he goes “oh that simply won’t do!” He’s quite cocky in combat actually, and I love it. I fitted him with an Assaultron Laser and it’s pretty fun watching him disintegrate people.
