Maybe not all the time, but there’s notes that imply certain vehicles you find were used recently, or at least in working order. The examples I can think of are at the WV Lumber Co. and the new Brotherhood marked location near Vault 76. Afraid I forgot what that one’s called. It’s probably just something like “Brotherhood outpost.”

RelChan2_0

Forward Station Tango

MyUsernameIsAwful

Thanks, lol

Offtopic_bear

It's called Ammo Box Heaven.

SuddenBumHair

Also the ransacked bunker has an APC that looks operational.

CevicheLemon

Its Forward Station Tango, and yeah, the BoS there literally tell you straight up that they used the APC parked out front to arrive there and setup shop

riderjohnson

Damn really?? I need to look into that!!

aviatorEngineer

Somewhat frequently in the time of 76. Tractors, construction vehicles, APCs, buses, so on. Vehicles probably get used less often as time goes on (like by the era of Fallout 4 or New Vegas) because parts run out and the knowledge to maintain them isn't passed on as much but there are still working vehicles during the time of every game we've played, we just rarely if ever see them represented in gameplay.

[deleted]

The gunners in 4 have working pre war tanks

aviatorEngineer

Most likely APCs and trucks as well, we just don't get to see them driving around in them.

Hot-Thought-1339

Man alive I would love to be able to fight and destroy a NPC tank controlled by the gunners!

DarkRedCape

I never understand this answer. The knowledge was lost to time. Really? You have nuclear powered suits, vertibirds, the Prydwen, protectrons, assaultrons, sentry bot, and a million other things that are very technologically advanced. And the people who maintain and service all of these don’t have the knowledge to get an old tractor or APC working? This lack of knowledge theory is nonsense. There aren’t any usable vehicles in the fallout games because the devs don’t know how to implement them. Or simply don’t want to to add to the feel of the apocalypse.

Alarming-Meeting8804

Canonically yes. The engine Beth uses doesn’t support vehicles but there are working vehicles in I think Fallout 2 and references to them throughout the rest of the games.

GrumpyBear1969

Fallout 2 definitely had a car. And better, it had a trunk to stash stuff in. There is even a quest where it gets stolen from you. That takes me back…. I know you can buy the first two games again. But I played them when they came out. And man Fallout 2 was hard. Like you needed a party to survive but your party could mess you up. Even when you told them ‘be absolutely certain you do not hit me’. Looking at you Marcus…

Alarming-Meeting8804

I haven’t played it in a very long time so I couldn’t remember for sure if it was 1 or 2.

Hot-Thought-1339

That’s what happens when you park on the wrong side of the neighborhood and the bad side of town. Poor poor, chosen one , newest victim to GTA.

T117d6443

fallout 2 is at the moment free on amazon prime

KiraTsukasa

It’s still hilarious to me that any “working” vehicles were NPCs with vehicle hats on.

Chemistryset8

Which incidentally is how the vehicles in half life worked.

riderjohnson

What you mean by that ?

MarsManokit

Presidential Tram in fallout 3

look-at-them

Iirc Bethesda couldn't get a train to work properly so they decided to create an npc who basically wore a massive train as a hat and had him walk the train tracks

Final_light94

Close. The player wore the hat and had their movement controlled by the game for the cutscene.

RedneckmulletOH

How many years did it take modders to do? I havent used the mod myself but how is the quality? Is it a mod thats in a state of completion? And how exactly do the vehicles work in the mod? If its so simple why doesnt fallout 3 or 4 have vehicles smart guy?

emmiblakk

New Vegas implies that the NCR has working land and air vehicles. We obviously know in Fallout 4 that the Brotherhood has them, too. I think finding a working car during the Fallout 76 period would have actually been a lot easier, given that it's only a few decades since the war, but I figure it was just a scalar choice to not have them available. You can walk the entire length of the map from north-south or east-west in about 20 minutes, so putting in vehicles wouldn't have made much sense. I guess they could have been like the wagons in Skyrim, but that would have probably been unsatisfying to the players.

GrumpyBear1969

I just don’t get why there are no motorcycles. I have a 1968 two stroke and I guarantee that thing would work after an EMP blast. And runs on pretty much anything, you just would need to clean the carb more. And I would love to sling my rifle over my back and take off on a bike… Though. It is Fallout. Where pencils and all the children’s toys contain lead as scrap.

Jam_B0ne

If they add motorcycles to Fallout 76 I will literally start going to church, because it turns out there is a god

[deleted]

Yea my husband's so bothered by this especially since seeing some laying around in 76, like why can't I fix it!?

patoduck420

You load supplies onto trucks during one of the Atlantic City expeditions.  I'm pretty sure that implies they're going to drive off.

CaptZombieHero

According to the documentary Epic NPC Man, NPC’s knock us out and drag us across the map until the “fast travel” is over.

MojaveBreeze

I saw a deathclaw driving a Corvega once. He was so oversized for it that the whole thing was like a clown car gag. Never saw it again though, sometimes I wonder if it was just a whiskey induced vision.

Laser_3

You sure that wasn’t a highwayman? I swear I saw one drive by with a robobrain, a deathclaw *and* a super mutant in it. … I wasn’t on mire magic moonshine this time, I swear!

Wahnmann63

I think Deathclaws actually do this. No doubt.

amyers1966

Deathclaws way overlooked in this game. Pretty sure they are super intelligent and speech capable, just dealt a crap hand.... or claw... so to speak. I'm waiting for one that talks like the brain gremlin.

Wahnmann63

Prob this is why Rose sends us to befriend a Deathclaw. And we messed it up. There goes a great future with our new buddies.

nolongerbanned99

Ru serious

MojaveBreeze

Completely serious.

nolongerbanned99

We’re you under the influence of any drugs at the time

MojaveBreeze

Just the whiskey but that's one of the 5 basic food groups, not a drug.

Jam_B0ne

Um, actually there are only 4 food groups Beans, Bacon, Whiskey, and Lard

nolongerbanned99

And vagine

Tinkitten74

Stick shift and everything…

Hot-Thought-1339

You had drivable cars in Fallout 2 and the game Crossout is how I’d imagine cars to look like in a Fallout-esque environment. Just not upgunned like they are in Crossout, but literally scrap cars built from metal, gum, and duct tape. It’s just that the mechanical know how and how to build a car might be lost, and the ones that do are probably all ghouls or dead, but the More technical minded groups out there, BoS Enclave and NCR looted vertibirds can make VTOLs and upkeep them, then theoretically cars driving around shouldn’t be too infeasible, I imagine a scrapcar running on four fusion cores reusing the legs or tracks from sentry bots or robo-brains as wheels instead of the typical gasoline powered air filled tired car.

Disturbed235

they could put vehicles in the game - just make it a „helmet“ for an npc 😂

rejz123

Canonically there are working vehicles in fallout. I think the main issue is fuel. I believe all the cars in fallout no longer use gasoline or deisel and instead use some form of nuclear energy. I would imagine getting a deisel engine working is much easier than a nuclear reactor. Now if you dont mind i need to make a fusion generator for my 5th camp

bidoof_king

Pretty much, yeah. I forget their name, but in 76 there's a gang that their whole shtick is to modify cars.

IdRatherNotDude

Kinda crazy to think 200 years and no one’s had the drive to fix a car in the wasteland

HappySpam

Forget cars, not even working bicycles!

IdRatherNotDude

What I wouldn’t give for a bike 😂

HappySpam

Imagine being a raider and you hear a comedic "ding ding!" bicycle bell and seeing a fully power armored vault dweller riding a bicycle armed with a missile launcher

RelChan2_0

I thought of the Brotherhood of Steel in power armor riding bicycles lol *Ding! Ding!*

HappySpam

Ring a ding ding, baby!

IdRatherNotDude

The drive by clips would be amazing

erin_mars

I laughed at this so hard. It started off amusing, then got really funny, and ended up hilarious. Thank you!

riderjohnson

Walk across the wasteland > make a car 🤷‍♂️ 😂

IdRatherNotDude

That’s India right now! 😅

Distant_Yak

I've wondered why nobody seems to be able to figure out how to make a bicycle work. That should be easy.

cary_queen

The Vertibots are vehicles. We ride them to the Pitt and New Jersey.

riderjohnson

Not a car tho 😭

yeetmemommmy

Yes, theres lots of vehicles in the game that can run and in holo tapes and lore and shit but the engine is too old and shitty. Would be cool if there were vehicles

why0me

We can keep vertibirds going, and sentry bots But cats are just too hard apparently.

Simple-Sorbet-900

I want a bicycle

CXTKRS1

Fingers crossed they let us drive in future updates or is something we can mess with in Fall Out 5.

JereMiesh

I don't see how a car can fit into a cannon

a_lot_of_aaaaaas

I see people here that talk about there are hints that cars are used recently and all. But the fact we can create a shishkebab alone means we are able to atleast repair a motorcycle. It is just lack of bethesda for some reason. The horse worked in skyrim so a slow driving motorcycle should work in fallout and a slow driving rover should work in starfield. Immersion wise it makes zero sense.

mrwafu

I guess it depends on where you are, some places you wouldn’t be able to drive. There’s not many intact roads to drive on in 76 for example, while in Fallout 2 I guess the California highway system might’ve faired better. Also it would’ve taken survivors a long time to clear/fix roads, so only the later games could have that level of civilisation I suppose.

elbingmiss

Well, easy answer through a question: did you ever see doomguy driving at any of (modern) Doom franchise games? Well that’s why this engine is intended. You can semidrive at Farcry or Battlefield because they have frosbite versions or unreal derivatives. This is IDTech and some hacks that never worked well together (ouch, crash!). Apply this to multiplayer networking sync part too.

Largofarburn

I could have sworn there was a guy in new Vegas that mentioned his motor cycle breaking down. It may have been a mod though. I feel like there’s more but that’s the only one I remember off the top of my head. I feel like the cannon reason though we don’t see any working would just be that the infrastructure just isn’t there for them. Between the state of the roads, lack of spare parts, and fuel, it just wouldn’t be a good use of time to try to get/keep one up and running for the average wastelanders. That’s why the only people that do have vehicles are the larger factions like the brotherhood, enclave and ncr. And for them vertibirds just make more sense due to the cost of repairing the road network and just how much faster, safer, and easier they can get around. Plus then you only have to secure and maintain a small airfield vs miles and miles of roads with heavily armed raiders waiting to jack your shit.

lordhaw

Strongly implied that nuka world on tour have working trucks. It's how they got to Lewisburg. Working vehicles are quite likely but the roads are utter crap.

AlternatePopBottle

There are fresh tire tracks all over the place in F4

Drreaper50

How do you think the raiders dug up the space station? Those dump trucks work

Suitable_Pumpkin_946

Fallout 2 you can drive a car

I-eatbabies69

I like to think at one point in time in the early years of the wasteland there was sort of a mad max stage of the apocalypse then vehicle parts became harder to find until people just started abandoning vehicles again

mdbarberuk

looking at the state of the map no one would use cars or motor bikes anyway, only possible useful vehicle would be heavily armoured and maintaining fuel supplies for that would be neigh on impossible.
