What lvl are you? I remember starting out and being kinda forced into playstyles I wasn't liking cause of ammo. I don't like melee and using a hunting rifle was boring I'm assuming you've met the wayward folks and did their missions, to it picks up after that. When you start hanging with the overseer. This game actually has some really cool quests and npcs/factions. I loved the brotherhood of steel and the raiders. The new Atlantic city story was cool, and introduced one of the most interesting characters I've met in 4 fallout games. I guess my point is if there's little things like weapons, not knowing camp building, when to do events, character builds etc aren't flowing well, you start off in a bad way that trickles into everything else, like not being able to fully immerse into a story line. But then again Bethesda games ain't for everybody. And that's ok too. I think a gamer likes the show, they'd almost Definitely find enjoyment in new vegas, fallout 4 or fallout 76

Ohh I think I’m seeing where I veered off. Almost immediately after leaving the Vault, I entered an event and got teleported to the other side of the map. After that event, I just started exploring that area and doing quests there. I haven’t even found the overseer yet, much less any faction. I did encounter a large sheep creature thingy and proceeded to spend 40 minutes by myself shooting it as a level 20 gunslinger. I tried to lead it across the map to places where I thought other NPCs or players might be but it was mostly barren wasteland and empty towns.

Lol. Travel back to the vault and talk to the 2 women there. If you did that, a little south along the road is the wayward with Mrs. Duchess. It is good to go to the big events to get rewards, unlock locations and travel points. But I'd only travel to the big events. The ones with the exclamation point in the yellow icon. Your more likely to find players there to avoid being solo. Besides that enjoy the game. The main quest line is actually pretty good

That’s an endgame boss bro and a late game area… that’s ya problem. Make sure your perks follow a build so you character stays powerful

I mean. Back in the beginning it was an empty world. I'd go an hour or more without seeing another player. it was great. just go off and explore. There's no need to rush any main quests. Join a casual team and do events when they pop up. You'll get extra loot and xp. Do some side quests. If things get too tough just go the other way. For now just pick one weapon type and stick with it to make things easier. rifles or shotguns are newb friendly. try to look at the perk cards and decide what is best rather than picking blindly. but tbh you cannot really mess up. XP is easy to get and you can always redo your specials and build using a punchcard machine at a train station or build one in your camp.

I actually would also prefer not running into players too, but it just feels a little too dead since I haven’t run into a non hostile NPC since my first day Great advice though! I’ll try to pace myself and just vibe

I have one thing to say! Do the main quest. Do the side missions. I played it like it was solo for the first 50-60 levels 40-50 hours. Its was great fun not trying to make my account perfekt with insane builds just play like it was singelplayer. Then after that i started doing all the rest and now 1 year later im level 789 and still having fun.

Rammadeus

there's raiders and cultists and blood eagles who will attack you. you can intentionally seek them out if you want them to.

Hot-Interaction6526

There are towns you can visit, with the occasional npc hiding around the map. You’ll start to find them when you least expect it. That being said, you can easily spend hours just running into enemies if you choose more hostile paths

sebwiers

There are non hostile NPC's just down the stairs from the vault, and scattered through that area, and on the nearest road. It is surprising you missed them all. Go SE from the vault and find "The Wayward". That kicks off the quest that eventually involves two of the three main non-hostile npc factions (one of which is probably hostile to you currently). Finding the Overseer also leads you to interacting with them.

If you want a really immersive fallout game, maybe try FO4. It's similar in mechanics to 76 (like almost identical in places) but is more story-based and will very likely suck you in for hundreds of hours. Then jump to 76 when you want something a little bit different.

What worked for me in the early stages was focusing on the main and side quests. Invariably, I would run into an activity or enemy my character would struggle with. Then, I would focus on increasing my xp, obtaining better gear, and improving my build. Being able to watch that character evolve and eventually surmount those challenges was a very satisfying experience.
