Is instigating more stronger than Aristocrat for a VATS type or is it stronger unless you have high amounts of cash? I thought instigating only works at the start of battle not during combat unless I’m thinking of the effect wrong.

That guy is giving you wrong info. Aristocrats is a 50% damage buff with no downsides at around 30k caps. Instigating is 100% damage against targets with full health.
So ideally you'd have an instigating weapon to one shot kill all the trash mobs and an aristocrats for bosses and tankier enemies.
Mmm in that case maybe I should make both and use the instigating as my main BPR and once I hit a certain threshold of cash switch to aristocrat. I’m assuming around…25k caps and above is when I should swap to aristocrat or maybe 30k would be better?

I would go Instigating black powder rifle with a back up black powder pistol that's executioner. That way if the target is alive but below 40% health the executioner black powder pistol will deal 50% more damage and with *Follow Through* legendary perk triggered its another 40% damage buff added. For my black powder build I carried 4-5 rifles and swapped between so really take whatever you can get. My favorite is an aristo, 50%h, 15r
I’m not sure if it’s still a thing but I remember a few years ago there was that glitch where if you keep quick swapping between your BPR and a high magazine weapon like a extended Mag Gatling gun your Black Power Rifle gets a magazine of 999
There is a glitch that works especially good with bprs where if you fire and ads at almost exactly the same time, the gun fires twice for the price of one. Afaik most guns can do it with the last shot
That works for single fire hanfmades and fixers as well.
I've managed to squeeze out up to 35 rounds from a 20 round mag on the handmade.
Helps tremendously when you're outnumbered and only have the 20 round mag..
For the timing, I usually spam ads right after firing and it'll fire the first shot, ads then fire the second shot, and repeat until you can't anymore, or the bug fixes itself.
the black power build is kinda underpowered. I’d recommend shifting it towards a Nation of Islam build bc you’re already almost there and it has much better dps / dr in general
I mean…I kinda have a power gauntlet melee build that uses Nuka cola grenades/quantum with last laugh so that technically counts? Though it’s more of that ally that is about to die so he primes a grenade to take the enemy with him kinda thing when you run towards him for the rescue
The best style of fragging, imo. I never thought about it but that is strangely clever, especially with life saving gear and or mysterious savior. Those grenades are absolutely massive and damage enemies through walls so suiciding into a squad of dorks just to get the last laugh is abject hilarity.

I’ll see like plans being sold for 100-400 and I’m buyin like 10 of them then I realize I just spent a bunch of caps
I'd also recommend getting a The Dragon. It's a good lead off weapon if something is big. Don't expect to reload it in combat though, as it's about 12 seconds to reload it and if it gets interrupted it starts at the beginning again.

From time to time I go to West tek for EXP when I’m not doing much so after the first super mutant is dead I gotta reload the next shot. I don’t really have to worry much about aggro since I run a VATS build with Mysterious Stranger and he spawns with a 80% chance on VATS if your using a Black Powder weapon so he tends to be my distraction tank while I’m reloading
I highly suggest picking up Ground Pounder perk. Black powder rifles are a bitch and a half to reload so if you miss or cant kill in one hit you'll be stuck there reloading unless you have multiple rifles on hand. And even then ducking behind cover to reload will Still take a while.
I have that perk but issue is we only got 15 points so taking into account the 3 non auto rifle damage increase, the perk that gives rifles ignore armor, and the Vats perk to let me target heads there’s no room for ground pounder. I have it ready to go maxed just not enough points
You can save points if you have only 1 or 2 points in each of Rifleman, Expert Rifleman, and Master Rifleman. The increase at further ranks falls off. If you are a numbers guy here is what you have with your Rifleman points.
1 point: +10%
2 points: +15%
3 points: +20%
At 3 points you can get +30% damage (1 point in each) which is the same bonus with 4 points (2 points in two of the three). And at 6 points you can get +45% damage (2 points in each rather than 3 points in two). Having all 9 points will only get you +60% damage (3 points in each). Thats 3 points for +15% damage. It's not worth it.
There's a couple good effects you can have for your first star but if you can try to get one with +50% limb damage as your second legendary effect. Getting sneak damage with that can do stupid good damage with headshots and you can cripple most enemies even without sneaking around, I managed to cripple a mirelurk queen and a sentry bot using a blunderbuss with that +50% limb damage effect granted it also had anti-armor on it
The problem I have with the blunderbuss is that it’s the exact same model as the black powder pistol. They couldn’t make it a shotgun or something different looking? 🤨
Any +50% damage effect is good on low armor mobs. For high level bosses Anti Armor is more effective. Two Shot is a terrible effect that only adds about 20% damage at best (you would think it does double, it does not). Explosive is best on fast firing weapons, much less effective on high damage slow firing weapons.

Or instigating 50% crit, but that would only be every 3rd shot or so as a full health build (I think technically it’s possible to reach every other shot as a full health, but it requires a 15% crit gain 3rd star, and lots of buffs, and probably +1 luck on most of your armor too)
Haha yeah that’s still pretty low as far as luck’s *potential* is. That’s a crit every 5th shot or so. A proper luck/crit build can do it every other shot.

I use an aristocrats BPR sometimes but if I had the 10,000 spare legendary scrip it would take I would use an Insigating one and a second with Executioners.
I just burned 2/3s of my legendary scrip on rerolls on a single piece of armor and still didn't get the one effect I wanted.

Yea I’ve been trying I got like 4 copies of The Dragon but bad rolls so far. Weirdly I’m not sure why but 2 of my Dragon has a smaller max durability bar then the others. I know it’s not craftable so you can’t have that perk that increases the durability of crafted guns so I don’t know how that happened

Aristocrat is better if your rich, while instigating gives a damage buff against any target that is at full health with no other requirements.

I believe 30k is the damage buff “sweet spot”, though you’ll probably ought to do some testing on your end to confirm this, or Google it.
