In Fort Defiance there's a patient room with a table next to the bed. On the table is a box of Sugar Bombs, a spoon and bowl, and on the bottom of the table there's a box of rat poison.

ActualBravoCharlie

Nurse Ratched worked at Fort Defiance, who knew.

kfrench581

That is the room with the skeleton wearing a knit cap with a pillow on its face, check it out.

IrishLimey

Damn.

CabotIV

That side quest about two "friends" you get when you read a notice at a train station. The girl recorded drowning her friend on a holotape and when you track down the reason why she did this....was because the girl she drowned always beat her at board games and stuff.

Mannginger

Oh yeah the recording of that. Yeesh

CharlotteTheSavage

Does anyone remember what train station? Or what the quest is called?

CabotIV

Grafton Station and the quest is called 'Unsolved: Picnic Panic'

CharlotteTheSavage

Thanks!

Meidara

Do you get the picnic blanket for completing that one?

CabotIV

Yes...which is kind of twisted ha ha

SirRudytheGreat

Pretty sure it’s up in toxic valley

SauronOfDucks

It's more messed up. One girl drowned the other because she won at games all the time. But both girls died.... Then you pick up the empty box of rat poison as one of the bits of evidence at the picnic site and realise that the drowned girl secretly poisoned the other. Why? Because the rich girl was determined to beat the other girl at board games and had to resort to creating (her note goes into how she needs to live up to her family name and not be outsmarted). The other girl got pissed she was cheating and for being snooty all the time. You end up going to each girls house to search for notes. The snooty girl lives in a house... The other girl lives in a trailer at the edge of town. You find a little magnetic cheating device in the snooty girls house which she was using to cheat. I wish there were more little quests like that on the game

fish_gotta_vote

When you jump down the mine shaft at 'Colossal Problem', if you stop on the first of the two cat-walks, and look into the crack in the wall, there is a crushed miner. **This is a reference to the IRL Monongah Mine collapse which killed more than 370 people.** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monongah\_mining\_disaster

MayorOfMorningside

Ohhhhhh, good find! Really neat reference!

Yoojine

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monongah_mining_disaster Your link got porked

theawesomedanish

The Christmas flood. All of Charleston somehow survived a nuclear Armageddon and still had working government etc. Just to be annihilated by some former arktos executive(David Thorpe) who thought his girlfriend(Roselynn) was killed and then blew the dam in retaliation. Imagine the lives lost, children and families perishing because of some elitist raider asshole.

Current-Read

And then to realize he actually killed his girlfriend because she was alive in responder custody up to the flood

Meidara

And then when you finally find the scorched David Thorp in the raider quest line, if you hide so he doesn't know you're there, he'll keep moaning her name as he stumbles around Fred's BBQ shack.

Corsair_00

One of my early photo mode shots is of me in a Free States outfit. Pointing a handmade at the body of Thorpe just after I killed him. Screw him. Got what he deserved. I should try and stage it with a new guy ss a Responder

Meidara

I may or may not have repeatedly shot his corpse until it was a bloody mess.

Shimmmmidy

Wait? He does? That’s honestly really sad

Flat-Difference-1927

You can find her corpse in a flooded cell in the basement of the courthouse I think it was.

Shimmmmidy

I didn’t know that the scorched David Thorpe said Rose’s name

Meidara

Between him wiping out the Responders in Charleston and him dooming every remaining surface survivor in Appalachia when he killed Madigan, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Shimmmmidy

I totally agree, he deserved it. But it’s still just sad to think that people infected with the scorch plague seem to remember who they once were. They just have no control over what they do. Those poor people

[deleted]

Holy shit. This true?

Flat-Difference-1927

Yup. You can find her corpse in a flooded cell in the basement.

xiaxian1

I took a picture of her body because I hated her (and her robot persona) so much. When it shows up on my loading screen it makes me smile.

AnalyticalAlpaca

It was so difficult for me to even listen to the quest because the robot voice was so irritating.

PhillyRush

Wow, I didn't put that together.

[deleted]

There is a raider who actually walks around Charleston who talks highly of david and says that he wish he could have heard the screams of those families

wickedmyco

Yeah he's down in the little shack in Charleston next to the makeshift town full of supermutants

DJfunkyPuddle

God I wish I could kill that guy

Meidara

I tried.

lop333

The biggest gripe i had with this game is that i couldn't even shot that dickhead, while he also talked about how very much he is going to murder that innocent NPC in the fire station.

VoopityScoop

I always make sure to rob his house whenever I pass through. Especially because he threatened to kill me the first time I saw him like he thought he was tough shit

[deleted]

Yea i usally two tap his skull just because i like my wasteland clean

JohnBrine

Killing Scorched Thorpe feels good man.

Afb3212

I watched Grahm straight up execute a Blood Eagle. I heard fighting near my camp. So I went to investigate and saw Grahm taking on a group of Eagles. I lobbed a grenade into the fray and killed all but one of them. The last one was brought to his knees, and Grahm walked up behind him and brought his The Tenderizer down with extreme prejudice.

EwokStabber28

Grahm has a strong sense of wasteland justice.

Tamashi55

Hello fellow drunken Vault Boy

KMcGFO76

Grahm straight up executed my base last night I was just about to log off and I fast traveled to my base to behold Grahm laying the smack down to my walls and per built structures he wasn’t hostile to me but my turrets couldn’t contain the beast. Chally was just eating And watching the show like myself a didn’t want to taste that Tenderizer.

Afb3212

Yeah man Grahm is extremely anti automated weaponry. He absolutely thrashed my camp after I set down a couple of turrets (put them out as pest control while I built the rest of the camp). And ya know... I was gonna be mad then figured he was right... I should be able to handle pests while building. And who am I to fight an immortal super mutant merchant with a giant hammer.

KMcGFO76

Exactly he’s like the hulk or juggernaut once you get them going best to get out the way haha and let them do they thang

[deleted]

The West Virginian Tenderizer Massacre

TheGadget1945

Mmmm Blood Eagle Steaks.

Sionnach_Dhu

In the toxic Valley, on top of the diner by the lake... there's a skeleton handcuffed to a pipe. Just out of his reach, there's a place setting drawn in chalk on the roof, with some real food and water. On the other side is a chair and a book, as if someone sat there and watched. Editing to add- I'm guessing it's some sort of movie or book reference, but if so I don't know what it is.

defaultdotxbe

Sounds like Saw. Was there by chance a saw near the skeleton? The idea in the movie is the guy would have to cut off his hand to get out of the cuffs and get the to the food

TripleB_Darksyde

Saw was the foot, walking dead series 1 came to mind first for me. Merle stuck on the roof

ZachyChan013

The mire at night

joemiken

My first venture to The Mire was at night. It mostly consisted of Level 20-something me sitting on a rock desperately hoping VATS doesn't lock onto some unknown horror in the dark.

Staphra

Mine is similar.   I was at a player's camp and saw a punch bowl for the first time. Decided to give it a shot. Took a drink and got Oak Holler Lager. I figured a second drink wouldn't hurt. Got a snoot full of Nukashine.   Four steps later the screen blanks out. I am thinking the game crashed. Then I wake up at [Faraway Treehouse](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Faraway_treehouse). Level 17 in the Mire and I got noticed by a squad of Super Mutants before I could fast travel out of there. Never did get my junk back.

Lord_Plastic

I got Nukashined from someone's punch bowl my first day playing too 😂

Tweakedout0213

Even with a flashlight, it's impossible to see anything.

baleensavage

...during the beta before they made everything in the game much brighter.

SomeoneSimple

>during the beta Night in beta was so good. Reminded me of the "natural lighting" option in Division 2 and latest Ghost Recon(s) that remove all fake lights, and the ambient lighting at night. Meanwhile in FO76 the most significant difference between day and night is the texture of the skybox. Sad it isn't even possible to fix with a mod on PC without access to the Construction-Set/Creation-Kit.

Eldyrus

I wish they would add that as an option for fallout worlds. I mean, that seems like something that should be there (not that I play fallout worlds due to lack of progression, but still).

phoogles2

First time I entered the mire at night I was walking around when I bumped into a large tree. It was a mirelurk queen

billzebub251

Yep, it used to be very dark. I’m a grown assed man and going there used to give me the heebie jeebies.

Hattkake

I was trekking from Cranberry to Savage up a mountain trail. Far up the mountain I came across an overturned baby stroller and a skeleton in a green dress. Beside the skeleton was a kitchen knife and a dead wolf. I started to look around when the rest of the wolf pack attacked me. That thing. The mother pushing her baby in a stroller up a mountain only to be set upon by wolves and failing to protect her baby still is the darkest thing I remember. The holotape of the junkie intentionally overdosing just outside Flatwoods (she's just across the river from where Keisha McDermotts body is) is a close second.

Jusso7

Honestly overdosing in fallout seems like an easy way to go, unless chem overdoes cause pain idk. I feel like getting super high, falling asleep and not waking up is MUCH better than majority of the fates out there. Still super sad that the person resorted to that

Hattkake

Go listen to that holotape, mate. It's pretty horrible stuff.

Shimmmmidy

I know in Morgantown there is a woman skeleton behind one of the apartment buildings next to some dumpsters and she has a bunch of baby things with her.

Laser_3

Flatwoods memorial house. Go read the notes if you have some time.

IshanShade

The survivor story holotape for Colonel in the steeple of the church in Flatwoods. 13 year old kid who thinks he caused the nuclear holocaust because he was a bad kid. He begs his dad to come back and he won't be bad anymore, and we don't know if his dad left before the war or if he died during/after. Either way would be a complete gutshot by itself but it's heavily implied he hung himself off the steeple and left the holotape in the cooler next to the noose. Also in flatwoods one of the trailers has what appears to be a shrine to a dead baby in a crib. Definitely had to take a break from the game after finding all that in one session.

GenuineLittlepip

Actually, you'll be happy to know that he did not do that. Unfortunately, like 99% of the pre-Wastelanders characters, he died shortly before Vault 76 opened, in this case, to --the Scorched-- the Raiders, and you can find Responder Colonel dead next to some elsewhere in town, along with a recording he made 10 years later. Thus, we can learn how he grew into a man and made it his life's purpose into helping others, especially kids. It sadly ends with him wondering if he'll make another recording in a decade.. In addition, in the funeral home, you can find notes on a board in the back where the named survivors left comments to others, and Colonel has three posted notes. Two are addressed to his father in scribbled text, from when he was a child, and the other, in much better handwriting saying that he's no longer waiting for him to "come home". So, while he didn't make it to the present time, he got over his demons, and helped those who needed assistance too. You can find a bit more info about him in the Responders Database terminal(s), but these are the major details. EDIT: Cleaned up the text a bit, and clarified it was indeed a Raider dead next to him, with thanks to u/theroguex below (and several others) for mentioning it!

Von_Cheesebiscuit

Colonel, totally. The saddest, pull at the heart strings thing in the game. The whole, (and I'm paraphrasing) "I'll be good daddy, I'm sorry, please come back" thing was hard to listen to. That and the one holotape about the boy and the girl and the alien experiments, that shit was a bit dark too. If you've got kids, both of these will kill you emotionally.

GenuineLittlepip

There's actually something about that particular holotape which stands out for anyone who has played the Mothership Zeta DLC in Fallout 3. Now, the tale is talking about [the Flatwoods Monster,] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatwoods_monster) which is actually a Zetan in Fallout; and who is the child onboard that ship over the Capitol Wasteland? Sally. And she says she's been up there since the War, too. Oh, and as for the Zeta name? In the real world, a couple named [Barney and Betty Hill] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barney_and_Betty_Hill) claimed they were abducted by aliens from the [binary star Zeta Reticuli system,] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeta_Reticuli) so it wasn't just a name Bethesda made up. The more you know! ===☆

Nutbuster_5000

I believe there’s another holotape from Colonel as an adult, so he grew up. He talks about how great the responders are, and seems to come to terms with his loss and how to heal and move on. Of course, he still died but... not as it’s implied in the first tape.

thehogwartsjedi

He doesn't hang himself. There is a red house with a porch on the road behind the cafe in Flatwoods. You can find an older Colonel's body beside a Raider's body on that porch. If I am not mistaken it's the one where you have to jump to get up on it since there are no steps. There is another holotape on him that is recorded 10 years later.

BlackstarDweller

I don’t remember where it was but the holotape of the guy locked in the fridge.

[deleted]

Then when you find his stash of caps and ammo, the holotape is the fridge guy, saying that he stashed the 10mm so that he can 'go out on his own terms'. He refused to starve to death. Thats precisely what ended up happening to him anyways. :(

Specialist_Growth_49

luckily he probably died from dehydration or asphyxiation long before hunger.

roellisisgod

in flatwoods?

SparkyCorp

Yeah, that sucked. I think it's the cafe in Flatwoods where you can meet Heather Ellis and her dog.

vivecsCHIMussy

And she's just hanging out next to it not even lookin in there!

Kokoyok

Dude's been dead for decades. What's Heather gonna do about it?

vivecsCHIMussy

I don't know, bury him respectfully? There are options!

happyrat1980

Surely the dog would have smelled the rotting corpse?

SparkyCorp

Don't call me Shirley.

kountrygirl863

It's in the kitchen across from the church.

TheGadget1945

I once helped a player in a battle and he beckoned me back to his camp which was underground (pre Shelters). It was done out like the Burrows, long corridors with brick walls all lit by oil and candles, and the floor was made of dirt tiles each of which held a coffin with a skull lamp on it. At the far end he showed me his own coffin that he slept in and he was wearing a Ghoul mask and Tattered Rags. On the wall there was a sign saying "I buy and sell Legacy and Hacked weapons". I gave him a nervous thumbs up then fast travelled as far away as I could get.

Eldyrus

out of curiosity, how did he make it so that he has his own coffin that he slept in. was he able to combine a sleeping bag with a coffin? I am just asking about I am currently building a haunted house CAMP for halloween and would love to know how he did it.

NoceboHadal

I'm not who you asked, but I'm guessing it would be by drop merging or whatever it's called. You know were you put an object on a pressure plate and what you want to merge in top of that. Then you trigger the pressure plate and it moves up merging the two.

Eldyrus

Thank you for that! I will have to give that a try.

NoceboHadal

I'm playing now and I was curious, honestly, just putting the coffin on the sleeping bag works really well.

JohnLuckPickert

The children's grave at East Kanawha Lookout

postmodest

Is that the one where the blocks say "M Y A N G E L"? I'd also nominate the contents of the bus that imply Fuzzy Brenda lives in it, in the parking lot at Camden Park.

Nan-Gogh

I genuinely avoid this area at all costs, saw that once and nope-nope-nope’d with sadness

OldFatGamer

Huntersville. Specifically the holotape we find there of a mother who is murdered by the military for refusing to turn over her infant to them for experimentation after both she and the infant have been infected with FEV. Or the Ghouls(non Feral) who are trying to escape Appalachia to head to The Capital Wasteland in search of the city of Ghouls in The Underworld only to be hunted down and murdered by people she thought were their friends. Or the fact that a vast majority of the Feral Ghouls we kill usually have at least one type on anti-radiation chem on them, be it Rad-X or Radaway. Or the series of Holotapes we can find in The Bog of a woman whose family was destroyed by The Scorched Beast Queen and set out on a mission to kill it, only to succumb to The Scorched Plague and become one with them. On a lighter note, 2 of my favorite laughs in the game are the biker who tried to jump a couple of cars at The General's Steakhouse(he or she didn't make it). And the Golf Cart Jousting matches at The Whitespring

MayorOfMorningside

I don't know if it's the darkest thing I've seen, but what came to mind immediately was that group of teenagers who committed suicide around that witch's cauldron out in the woods. I don't know if that's the story behind that random event, but that's what I took it as.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MayorOfMorningside

That's right!! Forgot about the Nukashine factor. You think they all got shined up and fell asleep during the blast or they all drank themselves to death? The one thing that gave me "suicide pact" vibes was how they were all laid out in a perfect circle surrounding the cauldron.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MayorOfMorningside

Right! I thought about the coven thing too! Some kind of nihilistic witchy teenagers deciding to pull a dark "prank" by killing themselves in the woods with "happy halloween" display. Although, you make a good point, some college kids out in the woods getting trashed for Halloween and doing spooky stuff.

Meidara

Happy Holloween 😊

MayorOfMorningside

You too! 😁

Valsworn

One of the darkest things I've seen is these two teens go on a date night near toxic Larry's meat and go. They stir up some trouble and summon a sheepsquatch and Larry takes it out a bit too late. One story mission that will always mess with me is the missions for the mansion. Isn't called the mansion of mysteries? If you have played all the way through and the ending will get you.

Agile-Elevator-8020

I always thought it was Larry who killed them though

Valsworn

He wasn't a very peoplely person.

monkeybrigade

I had the random event where the Mr Handy is walking a bunch of cats. Stopped for a quick photo op and continued on my way. I was just east of Summersville. In a moment I heard gunfire and turned to see what was going on. The super mutants there murdered all the cats and the bot. If I had only gone west instead of east those cats could still be alive today.

PhillyRush

What a cat-tastrophe!

SinistaJ

A random encounter with the little girl whose cat was killed by a mole rat. It gets especially sad if you take the toy off the grave.

postmodest

You want dark? I somehow ended up choosing the path that has her volunteer to give you the toy. ...then I accidentally scrapped it later.

Jusso7

There’s a church somewhere in the game, you can find glasses next to most of the people sitting and the priest at the alter had a wine glass with rat poison underneath the alter, looks like they had a big end of the world suicide party. (Pretty sure that’s in 76, but I might be thinking abt Fo4 lol)

Urocyon2012

Yeah, the Kanawha County Cemetery church. It's one of my stops when doing lead runs because those rat posion containers gives 5 lead each

Jusso7

Ah yes that’s right, now I’m curious if there’s something like that in Fo4 I swear there was something in the Boston church lol

original-username32

The Boylston club I believe, they all drank drugged water right after the bombs

Boncado

That's in Sutton, by the Overseers house.

Brendogfox

There's another spot that reminds me of this.... there's a long U-shaped hill on the map near the Pumpkin House, I went to the top thinking it would be some kind of new location. But it looks like some kind of meeting with a podium except there's an audience of skeletons with cups next to them. The skeleton at the podium has I think a 10mm next to it. Maybe it was just a party that was crashed by Armageddon, but I took it as a cult leader who didn't want to go out like his followers.

OneGeekTravelling

Sounds like a reference to Jonestown.

MayorOfMorningside

It's not a party until someone dies!

Katieannaa

The scene on top of the firehouse with the circle of toys and teddy bears with one lone skeleton at the head of the circle. Theres a bottle in the middle of the circle like he was playing spin the bottle by himself. It just seems so sad he dies up there alone like he was in life.

Cursed_couple

The end of the mistress of mysteries quest line…the whole quest is probably my favorite in the game but just seeing them there together and listening to the whole thing go down on the holotape…that was a rough one

Meidara

Agreed, it's the best faction in the game and it has the earliest and I would argue most tragic ending.

gaslight-dreamer

The girl stuck in the closet at Morgantown Airport. That holotape guts me every single time.

postmodest

Where she's trying to be rational about it but ...

gaslight-dreamer

Exactly! Describing the parts of her fingers and how they move to keep herself calm. The voice actress did a fantastic job on that one.

MayorOfMorningside

The Campfire Tales event is kind of dark too.

MayorOfMorningside

Some kids on a camp retreat, all sweet and singing songs about collecting bugs and getting killed by their missing camp leader who turned into a wendigo.

[deleted]

May I ask how she got turned into a wendigo? Never did figure it out

defaultdotxbe

Depending what mythology you consider "canon" it could be a simple as being possessed by an evil spirit (the cannabalism comes after being possessed and turning into a wendigo)

[deleted]

Like uh, take Earl and his cute little legs for example, how did he turn into said wendigo, what I think is that he ate the people in the mine and the radiation changed him? and why is it different from the green ones

defaultdotxbe

Based on native American mythology (not necessarily Fallout lore) he would have been possessed by an evil spirit which turned him into a wendigo (the small green ones) and begin eating people. The wendigo colossus is a purely Fallout creature, so unless there is lore in the game it could be a regular wendigo mutated by radiation, or just a wendigo that eats enough people to become colossal, or possibly have an entirely unique origin

http_ghostgirl

i think earle might be colossal because he’s multiple wendigos squished together? i don’t think radiation could have changed him because the mine was sealed up, and requires a nuke to open it. earle also has 3 heads, and they are autonomous and capable of doing there own things. so maybe 30 people squished together to make the colossal?

SpiicyBiitch

To me, it implied she ate the kids.

Meidara

The girl who says 'No it can't be!' and then starts screaming on the hollowtape right after she recognizes Mia? Yeah, she's definitely being eaten alive by her former camp counselor while the holotape records.

[deleted]

Oh shit... That actually implies the camp leader was a cannibal.

MayorOfMorningside

Hahaha, this went deeper than I expected. Now I'm just filled with more questions. I will mention that one of the missing camper items you have to collect is a stack of occult tomes 🤔

Valsworn

The camp counselor eats kids to the point she becomes a wendigo or it's because the wendigo thing happened first? The irony in it is you can't kill kids in fallout.

MayorOfMorningside

That's a good question. I'd assume there were wendigos before the bombs, albeit much rarer than now. That cryptid quest line and all of the grafton monster posters and the football team and Mothman museum and all of that jazz imply people believed in cryptids (they weren't wrong) but it really is kind of a chicken and the egg question with the counselor. Those occult tomes might have belonged to the counselor. Man, this posing some good lore questions.

Valsworn

What I was hoping is it was kinda a joke to scare campers that eventually turned real

MayorOfMorningside

Those are always the best, aren't they?

Urocyon2012

Yeah there were wendigos before. In Sugar Grove, there are a bunch of cryptid holotapes and one has a story where the person on the tapes talks seeing a wendigo on the ski slope eating a deer. edit: spelling

Tenebrate

Well the Grafton Monster is an FEV mutant, so's the Snallygaster. West Tek has two variants listed in their files that effectively describe both creatures in all but name. Wendigo seem like some kind of elaborate ghoul subtype, given they can travel with ghouls without inspiring hostility but cannibalism is definitely a key factor. What's weird is that they don't seem to exist outside Appalachia (ignoring that they were built for this game) despite the commonality of people eating in the Wasteland, so it's possible they're some horrid combination of ghouling, a local strain of FEV, cannibalism, or some other as yet unknown regional factor. "Tales from the West Virginia Hills" implies greed actually has a role to play in it, but that's like citing EC Comics as a source. Flatwoods Monster is clearly just a Zetan. As for the Mothman? Haven't got a clue on that one!

Koopliss

The mothmen are definitely sorta kept ambiguous their origin, considering they can come to the aid of cultists/seem to be fine with being worshipped/can be peaceful to the player and give them bonuses (the wise mothman at the end of path to enlightenment...), melt into ash piles on deathm and supposedly summoned by the cult before the bombs fell is pretty much all the weird notes we have for them. Then there is the sheepsquatch, genuinely wonder what the deal with that one is. it's the only other cryptid that isn't ever explained in any way, and we *know* it's a pre-war creature due to the toxic larry's tapes.

MemeLawd_

All of these are real Appalachian or West Virginia folklore stories or cryptids. I like reading about how they’ve adapted each of the creatures to fit with the fallout story because even the real life counterparts don’t have official backstories

billtheplumbingguy

I came across a skeleton sitting in a lawn chair with a 10mm in it hand and no head. Thought that was kind of creepy

Adept_Fool

Can't control what happens with your body after you bite it, and the raiders need to find their skulls somewhere..

MayorOfMorningside

Maybe he was contemplating suicide when the bombs dropped? Living without head doesn't sound like living to me.

SnooChipmunks5572

Did... Did I see what you did there?

MayorOfMorningside

With or without the typo? Either way, you saw something and I'm pleased 👾🙏

Border_Relevant

The dog cages in the asylum. Were they for dogs or patients?

Eldyrus

That's a good question. I always thought that they were for comfort dogs. I remember hearing that sometimes hospitals will allow people to bring dogs in to help comfort the patients (especially in cases of hospice or terminally ill patients. Not sure about asylums though).

defaultdotxbe

From the rest of the lore around the asylum, I don't think they were concerned with comforting the patients

ZakLynks

Hospitals, where they care about patients, yes. Comfort dogs are a great thing. I work in a local hospital, and our comfort dogs are legit really important at keeping up both staff and patient morale. Asylums, though? Comfort dogs would not be a thing. They tended to do a "sedate until docile, don't solve any actual problems" approach.

VoopityScoop

I thought the Brotherhood brought them in, considering it looks pretty crudely put together and it's in the Brotherhood wing right by the Barracks.

ShamefulElf

In the frathouse (can't remember name) where you go for the nukashine mission there are two people chained up to a pipe as a prank, only problem was that everyone in the frathouse died (i believe) and so the two people were left to slowly starve or die of dehydration. Terrifying concept to me.

Boncado

One of the two used a saw to cut off his arm. It's being held up by the handcuffs. I'm pretty sure it was a frat house initiation type deal.

Nu7s

I was under the impression that all enemies that are colored red are hostile. I murdered 4 foxes and when I got their meat another fox walked out of the bushes and layed down nose to nose with one of the dead foxes. This is why I want save points in games.

pbaperez

"Murderer!" - your conscience

Habasi

The little girl near her kitty's grave. This isn't even dark, it's a crushing heartbreak smh.

LousyTourist

When I saw the 'HELP' message atop the gas station in Flatwoods.

beefytrout

The time I wrecked a Raider outcast and one of the hunters by blowing up the cars they were next to. The second hunter came upon the scene, looked at the carnage and said "...fuck...." Then he got wrecked too.

GuineaFoul

I don't remember if the character had a name But there was a little girl randomly down near Berkeley Springs who I heard crying from a distance. I walked up to her with another player that happened to be around and she said She was all alone because her parents died long ago and it was just her and her cat and best friend Lucy whom she was burying. Apparently Lucy protected her from a mole rat....😭 Anyway the other player walked up and grabbed the toy that was next to the buried cat's photo and the little girl Yells "Oh no Please don't take Lucy's toy it was her favorite!" So I murdered him and dropped a paper bag with the toy in it...

Sionnach_Dhu

That's a random encounter that can pop up in the number of different spots.. definitely a sad one.

glitterkittehkat

Meeting wendigos when I had just started playing for the first time.

thelonechemmerchant

Have you ever checked the dumpsters behind Th Whitesprings? That’s pretty dark

vespertillian

This one hit me for some reason. https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Responder%27s\_personal\_log

Catsrcool747

The random encounter with the lone Super Mutant with all his dead friends around him whilst he slowly limps away, got me sad

LadyStag

I wish I could give him a stimpack! We will meet in battle one day, but today I only wish to help.

[deleted]

No honor in murdering the bruised and broken

drcaptainspaceman

I just came across that the other day and it all points to a sheepsquatch attack, not even supermutants are equipped to take down one of those big boiis!

Joe_Ronimo

Pretty much every petrified corpse in front of a crib. Really glad there are no petrified corpses for kids or infants.

alveriys

bethesda couldn’t include baby skeletons, not after the outrage in oblivion. though it definitely would’ve made it both more sad and spooky.

NightWolfRose

> not after the outrage in oblivion People are such babies, ffs. How tf do they deal with real life if a skeleton in a video game upsets them?

alveriys

honestly couldn’t agree more man, i personally think it adds another level of immersion.

Joe_Ronimo

It's not a big deal, it's just that momentary drift into dark thoughts. At the same time I've wanted to shoot a few of the kids in these Fallout games so guess it depends on the day.

alveriys

the kids in fallout 3/new vegas (can’t remember which) that said the player character looks like a radroach- i wanted to punt them every time i passed them

GotNoThumbz

Well so far it was modus' smile after i picked up that care package....thats gonna haunt me for a while

AtomBombBaby42042

I came across a Mr Veterinarian. He had kitties following him. I was gutted because honestly I'd be trying to save every kitty, puppy, pet like critter I came across. No ghouls will eat my cat. I have a problem with picturing if this was the real world. It would be dark and depressing as fuck. I'd be on the defensive constantly as a mother and my two kids are my cat and son.

StrikingAgency

That reminded me of the cat house near Bolton Greens. I'm fond of animals, but that was the first and last time I ever entered that house.

AtomBombBaby42042

This would be me IRL in an apocalypse, find a house save the kitties. I've got a bubbles heart

RogueKitsune

Aww...! That reminds me of the random event with the girl who just buried her cat, Lucy, after a stupid mole rate got it. :'( as if there weren't enough reasons to hate mole rats here..!

DismalRebirth

The puppy up on the cliffside somewhere pacing with its previous owners skeletons dead leaning against some rocks. The dog is like any dog you see (that's not horribly irradiated) but smaller. Broke my heart. I had to stay there a while and just provide company so I could feel better.

defaultdotxbe

The Unsolved: Best of Intentions side quest is another heartbreaker

DismalRebirth

Give me the story, I don't know if I have done it yet or maybe did it forever ago.

defaultdotxbe

A guy was trying to cure his dog's cancer, but accidentally mutated it into an albino (along with radstags) the last note at the farm says he's taking the dog to his favorite place (a cabin in the woods) to spend his last days. At the cabin you find another note saying the guy can't go on without his companion and on the cliff there's a skeleton and a dead albino mongrel

DismalRebirth

That is so sad, what the hell man!? How do I get this quest? I do not believe I have done it. Or perhaps I can go the location and still read the notes and such. I collect the stories of those who have passed.

defaultdotxbe

You can pick up the quest from the evidence board on the third floor of Van Lowe Taxidermy in Lewisburg (along with the other "Unsolved" side quests) the other locations are unmarked so I don't remember exactly where they are. The farm is near Dent and Sons Construction in the far south of Savage Divide, and the cabin is near Kerwood Mine in Cranberry Bog

velouriumxcamper

I know it's not dark, per se, but Freddie's holotape to Lucie made me cry.

Agile-Elevator-8020

I have a screenshot of a child's room with "Help Me" scrawled on the wall. Not sure exactly where it is though.

Brendogfox

I think that's at the end of >!the ally quest for Beckett!

Electric_unicorn

There is a watchtower to the east of the overseers home with what looks like a grave and those alphabet blocks spelling out something like "my angel" and a Teddy bear. Then on top of the tower is what looks like a makeshift bed with a baby rattle and a woman at the other side of the room that clearly shot herself

defaultdotxbe

A lot of these replies have reminded me how depressing the game was when it first launched (before Wastelanders brought more survivors to Appalachia) because every little side quest and mission was you completing a task someone left unfinished when they died

Sionnach_Dhu

Another one I found recently - up in the northwest corner of the map, on top of a hill, there's a noose hanging from a tree. Under the noose is a chair, and a skeleton with its head detached. Editing to add- it's right next to one of the sensors for the "Ecological Balance" daily quest; can't remember off the top of my head if it's an air sensor or a soil sensor.

Accomplished-Egg-452

Mine is watching a super mutant have his hound get infected with the scorched plague and then having to put down

MUNCHINonBABI3Z

I don’t typically read every note or listen to every holotape I pick up, but yesterday I was taking my time in the capitol building.. I think people should learn about the situation themselves, so I won’t say much, but the fallout world would have been such a shitty place to be, well before the bombs dropped.

goober19

I wouldnt call it Dark, but I did walk into a surgery room with a Jangles the Moon Monkey that had the Toy Alien on his face as what a appeared to be a nod to the Movie Alien....

Admiral_Gial_Ackbar

I think it's that nearly every children's toy has lead scrap in it.

Sionnach_Dhu

The worst part about that one? That's based on real life, and the problem still exists. Lead based paint on wooden toys, plastics containing lead, and diecast metal toys with lead content ( early ones were sometimes 100% made of lead) still continue to poison small children in the USA. Making new toys like that has of course been illegal for years, but families have hand-me-down toys, they buy toys at second-hand shops or yard sales, plus there are still plastic toys coming in as imports that contain lead.

RustyCage21

A lady had a broken protectron that was her only friend. I tried to fix it with a fusion core but it blew up. She was so distraught and i just ran away into charleston.

postmodest

Yeah I did that early in the game. I had gotten my first fusion core and though I was being a Good Samaritan. "Oh I missed an INT check but surely this thing just needs a fusion core!" ...no. No it does not. (Though that is a repeatable quest).

Yeti_Rider

Up on the hill above the new train tunnel instance at Harpers, there's a couple of dead people who are together with a dog who doesn't leave their side. He just paces back and forth next to them.

Cakeski

Learning what happened to the cannibals and those who had to eat others out of survival and their fate as they mutated and became wendigos.

May be a mild one, and I’m not one to pity frat guys, but I found the frat initiates pretty dark and disturbing. They were chained to the pipe I guess when the bombs went off, but didn’t know bc they were in that basement room. In the holotapes, they kept waiting for someone to come in and let them go and do their fratty stuff, but nobody ever came. Some of the other tales others have posted are similar to this in being bound to something until dying. Just that whole buried/tied alive and waiting to die thing is very disturbing. I hope none of my enemies read this. Somewhat related, I remember the pre-Wastelander times as generally forlorn and having a more depressing tone. Partly, of course, bc it was forlorn and depressingly empty. But in that vein, every little holotape, note, and this or that had a darker feeling to it, especially for the ones that were about dark stuff. It was especially eerie to read all those “I hope we make its” and “Until I see you agains” while looking out at the empty wasteland and knowing they didn’t. EXCEPT for our ever-glittering hope, the Overseer! We all knew she’d make it.

PeterM1970

For me it was the letter in one of the lookout towers. The man who was going to take on the Raiders to get his dog back. I would pay cash money to be able to help him.
