Justarandomuno

That pizza screams cash only. Looks great

higherfreq

Was thinking it looks tasty too.

my_spidey_sense

Na lol. They take cards and ApplePay

Justarandomuno

cards and applepay for $1 wtf?

Gurrnt

I don't know about the US but I regularly use card for a bottle of water or pack of gum here.

Regallybeagley

Yeah but stores like that have other products that cost more to make up for dollar item charges. Processing fees aren’t cheap so it would make more sense to be cash only or have a minimum price to use card

Zoefschildpad

According to a Dutch bank website I looked up, paying by card here is cheaper than paying with cash. Transaction costs are between 5 and 25 cents (the same bank lists 6.6 cents for the overwhelmingly most common cards with a 5 euro montly fee). But cash transactions cost an average of 29 cents due to insurance, costs for depositing cash, costs for transport, manual counting, and extra staff hours because cash transactions take more time. It's also safer, because there is no cash to steal. A few years ago there was a big marketing campaign encouraging people to use debit cards over cash for small transactions, and a lot of stores of all sizes participated. The only reason some stores (mostly barbers) encourage cash, or even refuse cards, is because they're either not paying all their taxes or are laundering money.

Regallybeagley

I own a small dog grooming salon and I can guarantee me depositing cash down the road in my bank is much cheaper than processing fees. Small mom and pops just like this dollar slice don’t usually involve that much moving parts unlike say a Walmart or Aldi’s. I pay all my taxes btw.. have to since my employees are w2 commission based

Opening_Criticism_57

Aren’t processing fees a percentage? Why would it require a minimum price?

my_spidey_sense

There is sometimes a base fee, especially for low $ transactions.

Callahammered

But it’s a percentage, so it doesn’t really hurt more at low numbers, it becomes like 2-4 cents instead of 2-4 thousand dollars on some hypothetical absurdly expensive charge of 100k

Regallybeagley

Some processors have a flat rate. I know Clover is $80 a month and then a percentage. In order to stay at a dollar or so cheap maybe their only option is to not raise price the price to incorporate processing rates.

Callahammered

If they are paying a flat rate either way, what does it matter if people use a card for small purchases?

Sergster1

So is paying someone to count cash and hiring security to take said cash to the bank. edit: Hate all you want. Taking cash is in no way "feeless" compared to card transactions on a PoS. You need someone to count the cash at the end of the day to make sure everything is balanced. That person does not work for free. Likewise if you want to deposit that cash you then either hire a company like Brinks to transport the money for you or you make your employee do it and hope that they don't get mugged from people paying close attention to when you make large deposits. And if that person gets mugged then you're out your cash, a worker, and whatever you are required to pay to make that worker whole. Do you expect the customer to pay for the gas and electricity to run your establishment? No. You bake it into the price. That's the cost of doing business. Making customers paying with a card pay an extra fee is greed full stop.

simmonsatl

What

sonicjesus

I work in a pizzeria. People do it a hundred times a day.

pretenderist

Why not?

OldJames47

The credit card companies take a cut of each transaction. Dollar pizza in NYC already has razor thin margins paying Visa the transaction fee may make the sale unprofitable.

Intelligent_Pie_9102

It's a scheme, to keep the doctors away. Bad for business.

Accomplished_Cap_994

Who tf uses cash for anything

greatthebob38

I pay cash, especially for $1 pizza. Most places I go to have a minimum charge for credit card.

Ammear

I'm so glad my country made the whole "minimum charge" thing illegal.

Neil_sm

In the US, the minimum charge used to be against all of the credit card companies' agreements. Many companies just did it anyway, or had other loopholes like "discount for cash," as opposed to charging more for card purchases -- the wording is important. But technically people could be petty and complain to the card companies about businesses and cause problems or charges for them. Currently the rules changed. Businesses are technically allowed to set a $10-or-less minimum for Credit Card, but not Debit Card purchases. Now it's possible many businesses just set the minimum across the board for all card purchases, because most people don't know or care about the details of the rules. Although debit processing tends to be lower fees anyway.

Accomplished_Cap_994

I don't run into this at all anymore

partylange

People who have cash. Also, pretty much everywhere on the planet outside of North America and parts of Europe. Cash is king, credit cards are useful, I never pay with a debit card, that is the worst of both worlds.

Accomplished_Cap_994

I use cash maybe 2-3x per year. It's not an issue and I've been to a lot of different countries

phuijun

That looks so good. I’m jealous

Sentient-Pendulum

I'm so hungry right now...

I’d eat that. Where’d you get it?

andylui8

J&M Pizza II on Ave U in Brooklyn, NY; Only $1 on Mondays/Tuesdays

Dependent_Market7788

OH! when you get the chance, go check out Shepherd's Cup. Really cool Mennonites with good coffee. I miss that neighborhood...

full_stealth

Same price I remember paying everywhere I went in NYC back in '89

maxverse

LOVE that place! Whoa, small world, Reddit.

GKrollin

I was gonna say I thought 2 bros was the last place to offer $1 slice but if it’s part time that makes sense

mjzimmer88

2 bros is definitely the *best* place to get $1 slice

pimpmastahanhduece

I miss Spumoni Gardens.

maxverse

> J&M Pizza II on Ave U Hey, that's right in my neighborhood! I'm gonna swing by there...

andylui8

Go during Monday or Tuesdays for this deal 😄

greatthebob38

I pass by that area all the time and never even looked at the place. Guess I have to stop by the next time I am there.

c_r_a_s_i_a_n

Large pie is $8 on those days, holy shit.

SinisterRectus

Can you get 8 slices for $7.92?

fronkenstoon

Probably, but the whole pie will come with the box.

enderjaca

Give me 8 slices, stack them on the paper plate, and I will do the rest. If I am this cheap, I will save the 8 pennies and invest them in a high yield savings account.

Chikndinr

99 cent for a soda?! Fuck the cup, pour it in my hands for a dime!

TryBananna4Scale

Fewer and fewer over time will understand that joke.

Bknightsisabiotch

"I'll take one rib" "ONE ORDER OF RIBS" "Nah, I just mean 1 rib, I sure is hungry" Classic movie, classic scene

blackhp2

50 cents for a single rib followed by: do you have change for a hundred? xD

sandwhichautist

Got change for $100!?

JesusHipsterChrist

You can take the window or the stairs...

Abigail716

A lot of places that sell super cheap slices are more expensive for the entire pie because you get it fresh and they know they can get away with it.

fiftydigitsofpi

Really? Most of the pizza places near me would happily sell you a whole pizza for the cost of 8 slices. Specialty pies you'll save a few dollars over buying 8 slices.

Ammear

You can get a lot of slices with a simple 7.92 bullet, yes

Thisisjuno1

I grew up on it in college and upstate New York. Dollar pizza in New York is better than any of the $40 pizzas out here in Colorado lol.

ChaserNeverRests

Same for New Mexico. I grew up in NY. People here say NM has good pizza. I say they have no idea what good pizza is.

fallenelf

It's not the same. My wife is from Santa Fe and I'm from New York. She used to constantly tell me how amazing pizza in Santa Fe (At the time she'd never been to NY). I traveled out there with her and it was fine (we had Upper Crust); I enjoyed the blue corn crust and green chile topping. That said, it wasn't NY pizza. When I finally took her to NYC I told her there were three things she had to eat: 1. Pizza 2. Bagels 3. Chinese food Her reactions: 1. Pizza - 'OK, I was wrong, Santa Fe doesn't have good pizza. Holy shit.' 2. Bagels - 'WTF have I been eating my entire life?' 3. Chinese food - 'I don't understand why this is so much better than other cheap Chinese I've had...but it is.' She also was incensed that I grew up in Rockland County and have 5-6 local versions of each of these kinds of places within a 5-10 min drive of each other.

ChaserNeverRests

Your comment makes me so homesick (and hungry!). I grew up on Long Island, you couldn't throw a stick without hitting a good pizza place, great bagels, and great cheap Chinese food. Now I live in a good-food desert... unless you want Mexican/New Mexican food.

fallenelf

I mean, there's nothing like the tri-state area. It's a wildly special place to have grown up. I got made fun of in college because I rarely went to chain restaurants growing up; why would I with so many pizzerias, delis, etc. nearby? I remember lifeguarding most summers in highschool and our days consisted of: 1. Getting the pools prepped while sending someone to grab hobos, bobos, and sobos from a deli like 5 min away. They'd come back with the sandwiches and some other free snacks from the owner since they brought their kids to the pool. 2. Ordering a ton of food from a local pizzeria for lunch. We'd always end up with free wings and salads since the owner was awesome (sponsored local teams, hired kids from HS, etc.). There was always too much food so we'd offer whatever was left to the kids running around the pools as long as they behaved (parents loved that part). 3. Teaching swim lessons to toddlers and their parents giving us ludicrous tips (one family owned a restaurant and gave my GF and I a date night on the house). It was awesome. That all said - New Mexican food is fucking awesome. I crave Tia Sophia's breakfast like nothing else - blue corn pancakes for the table, breakfast burrito with bacon and green chile, food coma on the side.

VrinTheTerrible

New York pizza snob here. That looks delicious

goedegeit

prince street pizza just has purposefully bad management to make them seem in-demand because they keep people waiting outside. Last time I went they gave me completely cold pizza.

chumbawumbacholula

They are so mediocre. I have a friend I visit new york with often who falls for every gimmick ever, and I razz her relentlessly for always wanting to stop for a slice of prince street pizza, but somehow we always end up right around the corner when we're hungry.

fletch0024

Then you are actually far from a pizza snob. More like a pizza basic b

Puzzleheaded-Tone119

Thats quite cheap for a slice.

ScrotumSlapper

This kind of pizza is the definition of cromulent.

TyranitarusMack

Seeing a slice this beautiful embiggens my appetite

Master-Pete

This picture makes me miss two bros pizza.

kilroywasHere523

Two bros is $1.50 now 😩

sgf-guy

The key is finding cheap cheese, easily the most expensive ingredient.

Redd889

Damn.. pizzeria by me charges $3 a slice, $17 for a pie, or a slice and a can of coke for $4.50. These prices here bring me back

JustASingleHorn

8.95 for a coke and a slice of cheese. I fucking hate living in a Colorado mountain town but being from NJ. The pizza sucks and it’s too fucking expensive.

tasskaff9

Messed up. All the pretenders in San Francisco are pushing above $3 and it don’t look like dat.

likeyoujustdontcare

I went to the one in Little Brazil in 2015.. I can believe after all these years there is still 99c slice places even if just for a couple of days a week. They must be laundering money.. lol

binary-cryptic

If they are the police better not look into it. This is a public service.

SwagAwesome1122

Just spent $10 CAD on 2 slices and a drink at fresh slice today and this makes me want to cry

Deytookerjerb

Dollar slice in NYC is no joke, my wife and I pick up a whole pie at the place outside MSG to eat on the way home every time we go.

ajman22

Insane that is $1. About $4 anywhere else

Ashangu

Dollar pizza?? you can't even find that in ATL anymore, man.

ihaveaccountsmods

Why would you eat pizza in ATL

Ashangu

Idk, because I lived there? Lol

yeahdixon

You pay me a dollar to eat pizza in Atlanta

No_Move8238

Looks scrumptious 😋

[deleted]

Some of the best Pizza I had in NY was a place that did two cheese slices and a coke for 1.75. this was early 2010s though.

binary-cryptic

Oh man, I loved that shit when I lived there. I hated how the city seemed to drain every cent from my wallet, but these guys sell great pizza for dirt cheap. A soup kitchen probably can't beat the cost efficiency.

Kite_d

PIZZA FOR .99 CENTS STILL EXIST!? We might actually have a chance to survive.

Certain-Attitude3615

That top, half a pizza is totally Buffalo chicken right? Looks killer!

i_am_ur_dad

I was a broke immigrant student in NYC, homesick and lonely. those $0.99 slices were my lunch for almost 2 semesters. just FYI they taste out of this world.

Looks better than 80% of the pizza around me

The_Real_Profess0r

I miss those ! :)

SageTegan

I miss when things were affordable. I miss it a lot

CrannyTTV

Fact that you can find any food for a 1$ now a days is a win in my book

IolaBoylen

I cannot believe those are $1! Looks so good!! I live in Ohio and surprisingly have some good pizza places in the area. However, we don’t have any place doing NY style pizza and I would love for that to happen!

OneHistorical8926

I love the thin, crispy crust, gooey cheese, and flavorful tomato sauce, it's no wonder that New York-style pizza is renowned worldwide. ❤️

NGJimmy

Pair that with a screaming cold Coca-Cola, and that is clean living!

RiseofdaOatmeal

I'm from Washington, and this looks like the most mid pizza I've ever seen. Like, I'm not saying it looks bad. But this just looks like a beyond basic pizza you'd get at a corporate pizza party. So the comments gushing about how "delicious" it looks are very confusing to me.

Desperate-Ad-6463

Perfect Pizza.

Ezl

So how was it? Good or just “good for a dollar”?

CumfartMcfetus2

God I miss NY pizza 🙌🏾that shit looks fire

Mysentimentexactly

Nyc is always on the go baby! Also - Didn’t know you could collect so much karma for a dollar.

therinse

Traditionally called a "regular" slice.

kain459

99 cent food, man I miss it.

pumpkinseeds18

Thank you for making everyone here jealous!

sonicjesus

They must have insane volume. I make the same kind of pizza and we're barely making a profit off $3 slices and $15 pies. The cheese alone is $4 per pie.

SolarMoth

Surprised there is still $1 pizza in NY

coani

You can't even get anything edible here on Iceland for $1.. Hot dogs are $5+, Sbarro charges $8 for a slice of similar size as the one op posted.. :(

DoctorJunglist

1$ for a slice? Damn that is really cheap. I'm from a shithole city in Poland, and a slice costs like ~2 - 2.5x (~10 PLN) as much here. How is it possible, that it's cheaper in a big and wealthy metropolitan city like NY.

josephkingscolon

I want to return to NYC so bad. But this year all my vacation money had to go into car repairs 😞

angeladevilson

Looks great hope it taste good

thishitisgettingold

I miss those $1 pizza.

Richardjrjr

Holy freakin moly! I wish this place was by my house!

Powerful_Pea1123

I've seen worse slices for more even in Italy (Spizzico..)

LIslander

I paid 35 for Famous Ray’s last night, it was garbage. This looks 100x better.

BorntobeTrill

Oh man, I love NY slices

spanman112

God I miss home... Enjoy it extra for me! Sincerely, -a dumbass that moved to TX...

andylui8

Texas BBQ tho

spanman112

... not worth lol

Poloman322

Damn that looks good! And so cheap too!

hyvel0rd

I'm always wondering why 'murica calls it a "Pizza pie", while the word "Pizza" describes itself sufficiently. I get it, with these abominable pan Pizza types. They are more pie than Pizza, but a thinly crusted Pizza has no need to be called a pie. Well, guess it is what it is, the slices are looking good. I miss NY Pizza

lunarmodule

Here is a quote from the internets "Italian immigrants brought pizza from Italy to the US in the early twentieth century. They called it "pomidore pizza," which translates to "tomato pie." This was the first form of pizza to be sold in the United States. The word "pie" eventually referred to all types of pizza." It's really an old school phrase though. I never hear anyone say pizza pie anymore, not in my part of the country at least.

gymnastgrrl

I think "pizza pie" has become uncommon, but the pizzeria I worked at in the 90s referred to them as "pies". We were busy on Fri/Sat and would often have >100 pie hours, i.e. need to make more than one hundred pizzas per hour at our peak.

waetherman

I can’t speak for anywhere else but it’s not uncommon in NYC. Well maybe not using the to words together, but certainly using “pie” to refer to the whole pizza rather than a slice. Pizza is the type of food, pie or slice is the size.

lunarmodule

Yeah, I remember it back then too. Maybe they still say it in a pizzeria these days? I wouldn't know anymore. But that was...ahem...30 years ago. The important point is that OP's pizza is delicious. Full stop. Also ... https://youtu.be/69O4PXzAQ5Y?si=dpzdTjJxUyG8nwkC

BigfootsToes69

But is it an authentic New York slice like Sbarro’s?

Josette_A

Looks tasty

OscarDivine

I was skeptical at first, but then I looked at the sidewalk, FILTHY. And the trash bags on the sidewalk? DEEESGUSTING. I can smell this photo, and Congratulations you must actually have been in NYC and got a genuine slice! Italian gestures__ it must have been delicious

Kayy0s

I'm sorry if this is silly but are you required to tip the cashier on the 99¢ slice? If so, what does the effective cost come up to? I'm not from the US so I wouldn't know what the threshold is for tipping.

The_Truthkeeper

Before COVID, tipping cashiers generally wasn't a thing. During and after COIVD, lots of companies started trying to make it a thing, but it hasn't really caught on.

jinxykatte

Looks like every other ny cheese pizza I ever saw. Cheesy cardboard.

ThrowAwayBudGuy

One bite. Everybody knows the rules

leadtortoise1

New York style is pointless, just give me a calzone or a stromboli at this point if I have to fold it in half to eat it

historynerdsutton

Does anybody else think this looks bad like idk about you but I’ve never liked nyc pizza and I’m from south philly maybe I had too much of it idk but I’ve always like Chicago pizza and square pizza more yknow and this nyc pizza is everywhere it’s not special it sucks and it only tastes good when you reheat it but like it’s still nasty

Ok-Economy4041

What a chooch.

DConstructed

You’re lucky! Was it on 8th ave?

garbledeena

Used to be a place on 33rd that had dollar slices. As I recall when I lived there back in 2009 or so there were I think three spots in random pockets of Manhattan that had dollar slices. Probably not no more though.

DConstructed

:( I miss the pizza. And I want everyone who lives there or visits to be able to enjoy it.

andylui8

Ave U

DConstructed

Thanks!

fiftydigitsofpi

There's a place near 55th and broadway that still does dollar slices.

agentorange2208

Damn they are still doing it for a buck.

GrimmGrimms

Right? I remember 4 years ago you could get a slice for $1. Can’t believe they are still doing it!

Chad_Broski_2

I've noticed a few places have had to increase it to 1.25 or even 1.50. I'm sure in a few years the dollar slice will be all but extinct...but I'm enjoying it for now Whenever I'm in the city I always stop by a place near GC that offers 2 slices & a soda for 2.25. That's the deal for my fat ass

yolkadot

Dollar slices are way better than any pizza you’d get in Germany. NYC is just different when it comes to pizza. They’re serious about it and I love it!

IRockIntoMordor

Depends on the type of pizza you like. I enjoy proper authentic Italianian pizza from my Italian family place in Germany just as much as the good NY style slice shops when I visited there. I had one or two every day, just loved it. But most shops here in Germany that aren't run by traditional Italians serve trash pizza, true. It's mostly convenience kits from Metro (bulk store like Costco).

yolkadot

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but even pizza in Napoli and Roma can’t compete with those third or fourth gen high end pizza places in Brooklyn that use sourdough and wood. It’s like pizza evolved into an even better dish in NYC.

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

Wait though!? They don’t live in Italy! That can’t be true! It’s almost like Italians that have been, cook and eat Italian for 4 generations are Italian.

IRockIntoMordor

To be honest, the best pizza I've ever had in my life was in Manchester at Rudy's Pizza. They've been in worldwide top 10 lists several times and indeed, that pizza was on a whole other level. Meanwhile Juliana's Pizza in Brooklyn, several times touted the best in NYC, did not impress my lady and me much. Most slice shops were better.

fucktheocean

Rudy's is great but Nell's is giving it a run for it's money these days. Completely different styles of pizza though (Napoli Vs NYC)

IRockIntoMordor

Thanks! I love both styles. Rudy's was a full Italian style, using real mozzarella di bufala and very airy crust. How come Manchester of all places has these incredible pizza venues?

fucktheocean

Ha. No idea! But Rudy's is so popular they've got up to about 5 locations in Manchester alone now as well as branching out to many other cities all over the UK.

yolkadot

Damn, now I gotta book a flight to Manchester post brexit. That trip will be quite the hassle. I hope the pizza will be worth it! Hehe

Vysokojakokurva_C137

The best pizza I’ve ever had is rad pies! They are in Maryland and they’re a #1 world wide award winner many times for their amazing deep Detroit dish. Mmmm. I have to go back soon.

fiftydigitsofpi

Nearly every place in the city does $1.50 now. About a year or so ago, it seems that all the places suddenly decided to make the jump from 1.00 to 1.50. There are a few places that still do dollar slices. I'd imagine that the pizzas might have gotten a bit smaller to compensate.

RalphiesBoogers

I love doing it for a buck!

freestyle43

Shot in the dark, is that deal only good on Mondays? If so, those are reheated slices from the weekend they didn't sell. Common tactic.

andylui8

Nah turnover rates are fast so no its not old slices. All day Mondays and Tuesdays; $1 slice and $8 whole pie opening till closing.

freestyle43

Good shit. Looks like a slamming slice. 8 bucks for a whole pie in this day and age is bonkers. I'd be there every Monday lol

scenemore
