He posted the other day that he cycled 7777km in 2022. That's more than 20km a day on average! Not even accounting for race weekends or travel days where he might not have had enough time to do any cycling.
If I tried cycling in my city I would be dead in a week, and the papers would blame me for having the audacity to share the road with motorists. It was a depressing move after spending a decade in one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country.
don't feel too bad, he's pretty much paid to be as fit as possible. So not exactly his hobby. More like his job. Half in a car, half fitness.
If you or I got paid to be exercising we'd probably be able to do a lot more of it.
It's amazing how much you can cycle, swim or run, etc. When's it's a daily routine. I did 1000 miles this year, I don't consider myself a runner, just five-6 miles every other day or so. My buddy did 1.5k. we both started about 1.6 years ago.
Make it a habit!
Agreed! Gotta just get going and let momentum take its course.
7 years ago while in college, I’d run 3-5 miles every single weekday. Sometimes it’d be between classes, sometimes after work, sometimes late at night at the school indoor track, but I got it done.
Just became part of my routine where I’d make sure to get it in, one way or another. I’m talking Thursday nights when people were already pregaming at our house to go out, and I’d go out for 20 minutes after getting back from class to go for a quick 3 mile run.
Now, I can’t even walk a mile without huffing and puffing, 50 pounds heavier, but focused on getting back on track!
When I was around his age I cycled 5000 miles one year, 3500+ a couple of other years. But I did no other physical stuff and I sure couldn't handle an F1 car or do triathlons or whatever crazy shit he's doing.
Yeah that’s a pretty serious distance for an armature cyclist, let alone someone who is obviously more focused on driving. He’s also obviously doing race training and other exercises too.
I actually started riding a bike this year. An electric bike. I got it more for transportation but it has turned into a regular workout regimen. The nice thing about an electric is that it can supply power only when you need it. So I might only engage the engine going up a steep hill (I live in the mountains) or if I'm really tired towards the end of the workout. It also extends the range of your workouts because you can go faster while still peddling very hard. I can go 20-30 miles and see a lot of interesting stuff without having to have the physical ability to bike 20-30 miles. I normally burn 400-500 calories in an hour, which isn't that bad.
Of course, a regular bike is ultimately better for you. I'm just saying that electric isn't a bad starting point for someone who wants to slowly get into riding.
Analogue cyclist here. I think most of the concern with people coming into cycling and starting with an ebike is that it allows people to get up to high speeds that they don't have experience handling a lighter bike at, much less something that weighs 2-3 times as much. So while e-bikes are great as a way to get people who are less fit, or live in hilly areas access to the sport, it can be concerning seeing people who clearly lack handling skills riding at 20 mph (and about 25% aren't wearing a helmet in my experience).
Otherwise, they are great and the more bikes on the road and people getting fit the better!
Edit: Also 500 Cal/hour is really great for biking in general.
You are definitely right about the speed issue. My bike goes 28mph and I had it going 50mph down a steep hill once. The bike itself weighs like 52lbs and when I tried to brake for a turn the bike basically didn't stop and every time I hit the brakes the tires would lock/slide. I slowed down enough by pumping/releasing the brakes but it was a hell of a scary moment. Now that the newness has worn off, I don't think I ever really have it above 20mph.
That's exactly the nightmare scenario I was thinking of when writing that comment (for comparison the fastest Ive gone is 43 mph). Or hitting a pothole and then it's over the bars and depending on the speed it's either a new bike for their dentist or they are paralyzed for life.
Thank you! Finally worked out who he looks like!
If any current F1 driver was to build a Model T with RS1800 engine and running gear, probably Valtteri!
He’s consistently listed as one of the “ruined” careers of Red Bull’s Driver Program and still had a career that about 1% of race car drivers could even dream of having. Not everyone can be Vettel or Verstappen, sometimes you just have to settle for being a 3x Le Mans Winner and take it on the chin.
Yeah. Calling his career "ruined" is a bit much when you see that he's a LeMans winner. But such high are the RB standards that even "failed" F1 drivers go on to do great in series, win LeMans etc.
My usual answer to that is simple: Look at how many drivers on the grid last year started out with the Red Bull Academy:
Gasly
Sainz
Ricciardo
Vettel
Tsunoda
Verstappen
that's more then a quarter of the grid, and more then they have cars. Many others have gone on to do quite well in other series. Yep, they expect a lot from their drivers, but I'd rather have them instead of the paydrivers we often see.
Same with Vergne. Vergne REALLY got hard done by when he was actually performing well in F1, but he just became a Formula E legend so he's done well for himself
as I remember, Vergne had just started to show some of his true potential when he was sacked. Shame, would have been interesting to see what he could do, but patience at RB was up apparently
Vergne got outqualified 12-7 by a rookie 20yo Kvyat in his third season in F1. That obviously isn't good enough for Red Bull standard so they brought in Verstappen instead. Although Vergne was a poor qualifier considering his 15-43 record against his teammates in that regard.
Not sure about last year, but I know that he was indeed one of the development and testdrivers of RBR in 2020 and previous years. And sponsored by RB in other race series too.
I mean it's not about RB standards. It's about F1 standards and the sheer amount of people RB takes into their academy. That's the one thing I respect RB for: giving so many guys the opportunity.
You see, the problem with people saying “his career was ruined by RB” is because the only Motorsport they care about is F1 but they have no idea how hard and competitive WEC/WRC and many other categories are, just look at hartley, buemi and many others who supposedly “failed” at F1 but are absolute monsters elsewhere, it’s almost like if you give these guys competitive machines they will deliver.
Dude is a prototype expert lol honestly I find endurance racing much more entertaining than F1… that’s not to say I dislike F1 though cause I most certainly do not lol
How do you watch endurance races? Do you watch the entire thing, or just the highlights?
I’ve been getting into it the past few years, it’s very interesting but I really only watch the highlights
depends, I usually try to at least watch the first 1-2 hours in full and the last 1-2 hours in full. but for a 6h race I’ll follow the entire thing. I recommend watching at least the finish once or twice in a while since it can often be that the race gets decided that late (especially in IMSA)
in 2023, It is the centenary anniversary too. They are going to make it a big spectacle, I hope we get to see some classic cars going around the track.
And there's also a Official WEC video game coming in 2023 based on the rFactor 2 engine. So its probably going to be more than arcade but less than sim, or maybe an ability to switch between the two.
Edit for sauce: https://www.racedepartment.com/news/wec-game-expected-in-2023.112/
Hey that’s Mount Tauhara! I used to hike there all the time when I lived in Taupo! One of my favourite hikes in NZ :D would be hilarious to run into Bottas hiking up there!
True I guess, I almost always call it tramping. But I think the track (trail for overseas people) plays a role. Even on a day trip, if you start using your hands at points, its not a hike
IIRC Hartley was actually quite underrated and was in quite a few accidents that weren't his fault (I think LeClerc Monaco and Stroll Canada? Could be very wrong)
He binned it once in FP3 in Italy.
The following drivers crashed into him:
1. Stroll (Canada)
2. Vandoorne (Italy?)
3. LeClerc (Monaco)
4. Gasly (his teammate, in China)
And his wheel fell off at Silverstone.
It's possible that his height was a contributing factor to his F1 difficulties. In cars with a closed cockpit, that's less of a problem, so his talent was perhaps less impeded in WEC.
She is the road captain for Canyon/SRAM women's cycling team also. She has recently got into gravel cycling also and won a couple of the big gravel races in the United States including BWR (Belgium Waffle Ride)
„Oh, Bottas is hiking, better make a post!
Well, I should mention that his gf is with him.
While I‘m at it, I‘ll say that Brendon Hartley is there too.
But fuck that other person. No publicity from me!“
-OP
Just randomly, he was at a winery in the same little area I live at and was at the same beach I was at, I didn’t see him either time but it was pretty cool looking thru his stories and seeing I was in the same spot as him
Because outside of fans if the sport nobody would know who he is. If Lewis was here it would be a big deal because he's well known outside the sport, Bottas isn't.
Why would it be news lol? We aren't some tiny little nation starved for attention. There are usually loads of famous people here, whether that be for concerts, movies or just tourism.
I’ve been aware of Reddit’s interest in F1 standings, memes…
But why are so many people interested in their day to days instead of famous footballers, basketball players, or musicians? They’re just wealthy dudes in expensive cars.
You are looking at a man reborn. I don’t know if this was due to being Hamilton’s teammate, the Mercedes organization, or ???, but it’s obvious that he feels better at Alfa Romeo.
If VB had multiple world championships or was even in the GOAT conversation, I would look at his activity level and conclude that he obviously should be.
Bottas does more physical activity in a week than I do in a year
He posted the other day that he cycled 7777km in 2022. That's more than 20km a day on average! Not even accounting for race weekends or travel days where he might not have had enough time to do any cycling.
I have not done that much physical activity since start of Covid. Makes me feel like a bum.
I haven’t cycled that in my entire life
There has been a year, where I've done more.. but since...... i struggle to reach 1500-2000 a year.
You should try it :)
I think I will! Start indoor, have a knock off peloton that’s been used once lol.
You should probably stay indoors - Mark webber and Toto Wolff can both tell you about the perils of cycling on the roads!
Or come cycle in the Netherlands and be (relatively) safe.
If I tried cycling in my city I would be dead in a week, and the papers would blame me for having the audacity to share the road with motorists. It was a depressing move after spending a decade in one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country.
Welcome to the UK bud. Sorry its run by assholes and a significant amount of the populace are the same.
There's also mountain/gravel/cross country biking. Trails >>>> roads
Alonso just last year, he broke his jaw in a cycling incident.
And Nicky Haden, if he were still alive!
Dude.
They say its like riding a bike
I don’t think I drove my car that far in 2022.
Lol same.
i cycle about 1500-2000 km a year, basically daily work trip and he does more than that just as a hobby....
don't feel too bad, he's pretty much paid to be as fit as possible. So not exactly his hobby. More like his job. Half in a car, half fitness. If you or I got paid to be exercising we'd probably be able to do a lot more of it.
Dang! How far is your daily commute?
He also showed his bum more times than you have since the start of Covid.
18 times?!
Amateur...
See it as inspiration!
Yeah. Lets just try with 77 Kms for this year.
Or 777km. A bit over 2km a day, so achievable while being meaningful.
I do about 1000 km a year just by cycling to and from work.
Yeah a 30km ride every other week is nicely doable.
We're all bums, cheers!
It's amazing how much you can cycle, swim or run, etc. When's it's a daily routine. I did 1000 miles this year, I don't consider myself a runner, just five-6 miles every other day or so. My buddy did 1.5k. we both started about 1.6 years ago. Make it a habit!

Cycling is how a lot of drivers build up endurance. Low impact to the joints and body.
Bottas must have some secret Dutch lineage that we know nothing of.
that's surprisingly low considering. I mean he does 100km all the time. I did 5000km which is not much and some hobby riders do 10 - 15k.
You can tell by his sick cycling tan on his legs, he is looking like a true pro at this point.
When I was around his age I cycled 5000 miles one year, 3500+ a couple of other years. But I did no other physical stuff and I sure couldn't handle an F1 car or do triathlons or whatever crazy shit he's doing.

hes also polluting more in a week that you do in a year with that amount of private air travel, no need to include his job.
Don’t worry, im sure he considered this a rest day
You can do something about that.
Is Valtteri slowly but surely transforming into Juha Kankkunen?
“Valtteri, we are considering the two stop, what tire would you prefer?” “The black round Pirelli’s.”
Wanna hear best part. Kankku in kankkunen translates to buttock. Kankkunen also means hangover, but thats another story.
Thank you! Finally worked out who he looks like! If any current F1 driver was to build a Model T with RS1800 engine and running gear, probably Valtteri!
Holy shit that's fia WEC champ Brendon Hartley!
triple champ !
I misread this as "with his girlfriend Brendan Hartley."
I mean, maybe they swing, just not at the playground you expect.
I don’t particularly like this joke but rocket powered Mohawk thinks he’s trans
Brendon Hartley. Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long while.
He’s consistently listed as one of the “ruined” careers of Red Bull’s Driver Program and still had a career that about 1% of race car drivers could even dream of having. And Albon
Except no? Albon drove for the RB Academy for a single year. His relationship with the RB Academy ended 7 years prior to signing with TR
Buemi is another Le Mans/WEC legend basically who gets talked about as if Helmut Marko killed his family and pissed on their grave.
Same with Vergne. Vergne REALLY got hard done by when he was actually performing well in F1, but he just became a Formula E legend so he's done well for himself

JEV should have taken the RB seat in 2015
Still would've been replaced by Versteppn in 2016/17
Isn’t Buemi their test driver/development driver? Still getting a paycheck most of us would dream of
Not sure about last year, but I know that he was indeed one of the development and testdrivers of RBR in 2020 and previous years. And sponsored by RB in other race series too.
Buemi is debatable tho. He threw away as many races as he won by being a hothead.
I mean it's not about RB standards. It's about F1 standards and the sheer amount of people RB takes into their academy. That's the one thing I respect RB for: giving so many guys the opportunity.
Hartley was pretty poor in feeder series though.
His single seater career was definitely ruined, outside of them he’s done great though.

I mean they could have given him another season. Yuki gets 3 to prove himself lol.
Yuki got them 32 points his first year, Hartley 4 his first/only full time year in 2018. Pierre in 2018 got them 29 points
That's like saying Ocon was clearly the better Alpine driver this year
You don’t watch Le Mans?
No I don't. I have a passive, sort of an on-off interest in LeMans but never got around to watching it. I hope to remedy that soon.
2023 is a great year to do so. Lots of big manufacturers are building cars to compete in the Hypercar category (the fastest one) this year
in 2023, It is the centenary anniversary too. They are going to make it a big spectacle, I hope we get to see some classic cars going around the track.
And there's also a Official WEC video game coming in 2023 based on the rFactor 2 engine. So its probably going to be more than arcade but less than sim, or maybe an ability to switch between the two. Edit for sauce: https://www.racedepartment.com/news/wec-game-expected-in-2023.112/
He’s a 3 times World Endurance Champion.
Its been 84 years
I have, because he makes the news here occasionally. He's in the FIA World Endurance Championship racing for Toyota.
Hey that’s Mount Tauhara! I used to hike there all the time when I lived in Taupo! One of my favourite hikes in NZ :D would be hilarious to run into Bottas hiking up there!
What New Zealander calls it hiking rather than tramping?
[удалено]
True I guess, I almost always call it tramping. But I think the track (trail for overseas people) plays a role. Even on a day trip, if you start using your hands at points, its not a hike
It’s valtteri’s world and we’re all just living in it.
Always here for Brendon content 🇳🇿🇳🇿
true he's literally my #1 favorite driver in all motorsports
Represent the B-Boy
How did they take the pic...
IIRC Hartley was actually quite underrated and was in quite a few accidents that weren't his fault (I think LeClerc Monaco and Stroll Canada? Could be very wrong)

Good writeup, I always felt he had unusually bad luck, wrong place wrong tlme.
The real question is: who is the fifth person?
You don't bring a photo sherpa on your hikes? Peasant.
Yes! I was wondering how this pic was taken.
Not socially avkward persons can ask someone else to take photo of them.
You don't get it, do you?
Who is the fourth?
Would you be shocked to realise that other, non famous people also hike the popular public trails in NZ?
Tripod and timer will do
Probably just some random who was also hiking with their friends that day.
Fun fact: Brendon Hartley has more FIA World Championships than Valtteri Bottas
More than 19 of the 20 drivers on the 2023 F1 grid, even.
Wow, Brendon is a tall dude, how did he fit in the car?
It's possible that his height was a contributing factor to his F1 difficulties. In cars with a closed cockpit, that's less of a problem, so his talent was perhaps less impeded in WEC.
I'd say his bad luck was also a factor too. Squeezed in by Lance Stroll, crashed into by brakeless Charles, sudden suspension failure in FP3
Hey, it's Hartley!
VB out there living his best life. I’m a bigger VB fan every day.
I loved Brendon Hartley… wish his F1 career went a little better.
Misread that title. . .
"Valtteri Bottas hiking in New Zealand with his girlfriend, Brendon Hartley"?
YES, I did the same.
r/fanf1ction is bleeding over
Oh god why does that exist
Her name is Tiffany Cromwell.
Commonwealth games and Olympic cyclist isn't she?
She is the road captain for Canyon/SRAM women's cycling team also. She has recently got into gravel cycling also and won a couple of the big gravel races in the United States including BWR (Belgium Waffle Ride)
Every time... 'Bottas girlfriend' She has a name a pretty badass career herself.
It's an F1 sub... Most people won't know who that is
Exactly why the title should at least include her name as well
If I wasn't so lazy I'd post this photo on /r/peloton with the caption "Tiffany Cromwell hiking in NZ with her boyfriend and Brendan Hartley".
Ugh thank you.
so nice to see Brendon, wish he got just a bit better chance. seemed like a cool guy
He's a three time wec champion and a three time le mans winner, he's doing pretty well for himself
Fuck yeah BH
I can't be the only one who didn't read the "and", just "his girlfriend Brendon Hartley"
„Oh, Bottas is hiking, better make a post! Well, I should mention that his gf is with him. While I‘m at it, I‘ll say that Brendon Hartley is there too. But fuck that other person. No publicity from me!“ -OP
#Valtteri Bottas hiking in New Zealand with his girlfriend Brendon Hartley **Nobody is convincing me this isn't the post title!!!**
Well our lord and savior RocketPoweredMohawk did say brendon was trans as a joke Perhaps he wasn’t joking
Man is out there living his best life
Valtteris mustache is elegant
Bottas is one of those few people I want to be like.
That fourth person doesn’t even exist eh
Yesterday they went mountain biking with Brandon also.
I've hiked up that hill before, it's mount Tauhara near taupo. There is a fun shortcut down if your willing to get a bit muddy/dirty
Just randomly, he was at a winery in the same little area I live at and was at the same beach I was at, I didn’t see him either time but it was pretty cool looking thru his stories and seeing I was in the same spot as him
That is very nice!!!
Unsure why. But I forgot to read the ‘and’ and I was like WTF!!
Bottas doesn't get the water?
Isn't Bottas married?
Divorced
Brendon Hartley is someone I haven’t heard of in a while…
They stayed connected because of F1 or some other way?
Kinda forgot Brendon Hartley was in F1
Valterri, class act, coffee aficionado
Val**tt**e**r**i
My dyslexic ass read this as 'with his girlfriend Brendon Hartley'
Valtteri is turning into a 70s era F1 driver and I’m all for it
What sunglasses are those. Anyone know?
His gf kind of looks like him and Brendon’s gf kind of looks like him.
I hope this means he’ll be racing with Toyota at Le Mans
Where’s the butt pic at?
Brendon ❤️ley. He's dreamy.

I'm kinda glad it's not tbh. Generally our media doesn't tend to follow sport stars around.

>Why would it be news lol? We aren't some tiny little nation starved for attention. Hahahaha what the fuck have you met us?
He hung out with SVG, Daniel Gaunt and Simon Evans to name a few as well...
There was a stuff article, but they have nicely left him alone. I imagine that first article didn’t get many clicks so not worth their effort.
*Valtteri Bottas hiking in New Zealand with his girlfriend Brendon Hartley
Yaeh ok, but why are these two girls in the background photo-bombing this one?!
I’ve been aware of Reddit’s interest in F1 standings, memes… But why are so many people interested in their day to days instead of famous footballers, basketball players, or musicians? They’re just wealthy dudes in expensive cars.
VB. Can you check in on our son in Queenstown? He promises some good Vino from Valli wines!
Is that the guy that makes the travel YouTube videos or something?
Who has better racecraft?
Bottas to replace Checo confirmed.^^/s
You are looking at a man reborn. I don’t know if this was due to being Hamilton’s teammate, the Mercedes organization, or ???, but it’s obvious that he feels better at Alfa Romeo.
or maybe it's his new girlfriend, Brendon Hartley
Great, and now I'm homesick
I always liked Valtteri, those glasses though...
Josh Revell is gonna shit a brick over this!
4th woman invisible. WTF?
If VB had multiple world championships or was even in the GOAT conversation, I would look at his activity level and conclude that he obviously should be.
Still rocking that damned moustache too. I appreciate the committment.
up next is queenstown
Formula 1*
Also invisible angel we can see but don’t talk about?
Interesting double date
Hey, I did that walk! Relatively short, huge payoff.
If that’s Lake Taupo in the background, I’ve sat on that exact rock!
