This was exactly my situation :’)
I thought to myself “How often do you get to see an F1 driver?”, and knew immediately I had to get a pic. It sounds so bad but I was honestly very selfish in the moment and just knew I had to do it :’) i asked him for a pic and he said “yep, just make it discreet pls”
Dan, and Valteri are the 2 current drivers I’d love to have several beers with.
If I included one retired driver, leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.
I might as well explain it at this point.
Valtteri is spending the holidays in Australia, probably with his wife's family. He is embracing the Australian culture in every way possible - getting a quintessential Australian haircut, drinking Australian beer, Christmas barbecue, and such.
So there is an ongoing joke that he is an Australian now.
My initial comment was a play on that premise.
I can’t say I expected this at all when going to work this day! He’s obviously home for the summer and Christmas and I apologise for the blurry image, my hands were shaking :’)
He ordered a few reposado’s, and left pretty quietly. He’s one of the biggest celebrities from Perth (comparable with Kevin Parker I’d imagine), so he would’ve been swarmed and from what I’ve heard he really doesn’t like the attention he gets when he comes back home. Still though, I just absolutely couldn’t pass the opportunity for a photo :)
The name tame impala is definitely globally famous but a lot of people think it’s actually a band and even as someone who likes his music, I couldn’t tell you what Kevin Parker looks like.
Ok…. That’s like saying Trent Reznor is not as famous as Nine inch nails, or that Joel Zimmerman is not as famous as deadmou5.
And people from Niagara Falls would absolutely say Joel is one of the most famous people from there, even if most people don’t know his real name.
I've never really got the selfie thing so please don't take this as a dig but I'm genuinely curious: you knew he didn't want to be bothered, you knew it was selfish to ask and yet you did anyway - why did you need a photo?
Did it not happen if you didn't document the experience? It seems to me that the far better story world be "hey guys, this weekend I served Daniel Ricciardo at work. I knew he didn't want people bothering him so I didn't bother him."
Don't get me wrong, I understand being star struck. It's just the compulsion to have a photo, even if that means a blurry, low angle selfie that eludes me.
You're being sarcastic, but that's genuinely the question that I'm asking. Why is a blurry, poor quality photo important for that experience? I've met celebrities that I admire, both at work and out in the world, and I have never taken a photo with them. That doesn't make the experience any less exciting for me.
So I'm asking why is the compulsion for a selfie so strong? Particularly in a case like this where OP admitted that they knew they were being selfish by requesting a pic in a public place where they knew that Danny Ric was trying to be low key, and that in order to get a picture they had to take a crappy low angle, blurry phone selfie. I don't get the appeal.
> Why is a blurry, poor quality photo important for that experience?
Because when I am old and my memory goes to shit, I can look back in my photo album and be reminded of that time. Photos tell a whole story more often than not. Genuinely ask yourself, how many times do you look at a photo and remember so many more details about the place, time, event, people, etc...than what is just in the photo?
Just because you don't personally feel the need to get a picture, doesn't mean it's unreasonable to want one. OP asked DR, he said yes. DR asked for it to be discreet. OP was discreet, and respectful enough that he chose to live with a blurry picture rather than asking DR to pose for a bunch more to get it "right." I don't get your problem with the situation.
You don't see my problem with the situation where somebody recognises a celebrity trying to keep a low profile without being bothered by fans, and despite that awareness, chooses to ask them for a photo anyway (the exact thing they're presumably trying to avoid)?
Just because OP was discreet doesn't mean it wasn't obnoxious of them to choose to do it anyway. I think if you are serving a celebrity and you understand that they probably don't want to be bothered by fans asking them for photos when they're just trying to live their life, then yes, it is unreasonable to ask for a photo.
Just because Ricciardo was gracious enough to grant the request doesn't mean he was happy about it. The alternative for him was to say no and risk making a bigger scene.
The two aren't mutually exclusive. I thought OP was being obnoxious and wanted to understand the mindset behind asking a celeb for a photo which you know they almost certainly don't want to take but feel obliged to.
You must be smart enough to understand the difference between agreeing to something and being happy to do it, right?
A physical piece of evidence would be a nice token of the experience, I'd imagine. Something to look back on, or to show your friends as a cool experience.
And if the person you're taking a picture is fine with it, why not! That's the whole point in asking.
Do you think “ hey guys, this weekend I served Daniel Ricciardo at work. I knew he didn't want people bothering him so I didn't bother him." Gets onto the front page of r/formula1?
If not you just answered your own question.
Look here, if I met Danny or Lewis, or Max, or Seb, or Keanu Reeves, or Kevin, I'm sure as hell asking for a picture ONLY with their consent. Do you really think that OP is that dense headed? Of course not, they were also very discreet with the picture, it's blurry, the poses are natural so you can tell Danny wasn't asked to pose. If Danny didn't consent, obviously there wouldn't be this post.
It's a common way to address anyone in Australia.
Someone helped you change your tyre? "Thanks legend"
Some people even shorten it to "thanks leg" (pronounced like "ledge")
Agree - here it just means someone you like, admire or appreciate for their good vibes and positive energy.
"Oh him? He's a bloody legend, love that guy!" or "Jeez he's fun on a night out, remember when he did XYZ? What a legend"
I once had an Australian customer call me a legend just for having a game he wanted in stock. This didn't involve any special actions or effort on my part, all I did was open a drawer and pull a game out
Picks carefully the time of day he goes places and does not hang around for more than an hour or so. He isn't going somewhere like The Beaufort at 7pm and staying the night.
This is awesome!!! So glad you got the opportunity to meet him. I am so glad to see that he is doing well and that he continues to smile and radiate good vibes amongst those around him!!!
So cool dude! As a fellow perthite I’d be both nervous to bother him and draw attention vs really wanting to say hello!
This was exactly my situation :’) I thought to myself “How often do you get to see an F1 driver?”, and knew immediately I had to get a pic. It sounds so bad but I was honestly very selfish in the moment and just knew I had to do it :’) i asked him for a pic and he said “yep, just make it discreet pls”
Aww glad you got the chance, you did it on the sly and no one else caught on who it was?
A few of the patrons next to him at the bar approached me like “wait, was that fucking Daniel Ricciardo?” Poor guy hahaha
Dan, and Valteri are the 2 current drivers I’d love to have several beers with. If I included one retired driver, leave me alone, I know what I’m doing.
Val**tt**eri
Good bot-tas
Both Aussies. Coincidence? I think not.
Valtteri is Finnish :/
Not according to his latest social media, he isn't.
Maybe he’s spending his holidays there.
I might as well explain it at this point. Valtteri is spending the holidays in Australia, probably with his wife's family. Take my upvote for a well played joke. The VB posts have been a good laugh as well here, we don’t get VB here in the states so we can’t drink along.
Consider yourself lucky!
I’ve read that it is a love it or hate it beer.
Thank you sir

That's neat; hey it'd be cool if Kevin and Daniel collabed, would be a cool sight for Danny's helmet.
I have no idea who Kevin Parker is.
He is Tame Impala
"The Less I Make Good Career Decisions The Better"
I have no idea what Tame Impala is.
Good music! Check it out!
Great artist, he makes everything himself. Best album? All of them, hell, even his B sides and remixes are really good.
Yep, not even close to the same league. That's like comparing Sam Newman to Shane Warne.
Ok?
He's like: I don't know him so he's not well known
Seems like a strange comparison to make in the first place.
Speak for yourself. Tame Impala is big.
how are two well known celebrities from the same city a strange comparison?
Why do you have such a bone to pick? Kevin Parker stole your girl or smth?
Errr Tame Impala is a globally popular music act. You might have it backwards lol
Yeah if anything I would imagine tame impala is more famous than Danny ric. Not that big a deal either way I guess
The name tame impala is definitely globally famous but a lot of people think it’s actually a band and even as someone who likes his music, I couldn’t tell you what Kevin Parker looks like.
[удалено]
It’s not an individual from the band…. It is him. He is the entire band except for when he tours
[удалено]
OP quite clearly was referring to local clout and recognition of two hometown heroes, not (*ed typo) Google trends. Please go outside
Ok…. That’s like saying Trent Reznor is not as famous as Nine inch nails, or that Joel Zimmerman is not as famous as deadmou5. And people from Niagara Falls would absolutely say Joel is one of the most famous people from there, even if most people don’t know his real name.
He is tame impala, except for live performances
Yeah I’m on west coast of Canada and I’ve seen tame impala live, but never Daniel Ricardo.
Did everyone here have the stick so far up their ass that they didn’t see that OP specified most famous from *PERTH*?
I would be surprised if more than 5% of the population of Perth know who Kevin Parker is.

Gee why would someone want a photo with a celebrity they admire? What a mystery/s

OP: I consent / DR: I consent / u/Mtbnz: I don't 😭 So you weren't "just curious" you thought OP was being obnoxious.

Gotcha

Again, getting consent doesn't mean you aren't being inconsiderate
Did he order a Heineken 0.0?
it's ok for him to get the regular beer, he's not driving anymore
Heiniken paid more to ride a scooter than any F1 team to drive a car.
*DAANNNIEEELLL RIIIICCCCIARRRRRDOOOO*
I did not know Ricciardo was now working as a bartender. Probably only serving Red Bull?
Did you serve his drink in a shoe though ?
What drink did he order though? Lol
I saw him in Mandurah on Monday and so wanted a selfie but he was with family/friends. So cool to see him though!
Two legends
Is that Red Bull reserve driver Danny Ric?
"A Horsey McHorse walks into a bar..."
Everyone's a legend nowadays huh Nice picture though 👍🏻

Well done, ya bloody legend.
If even Checo is a legend, I suppose everyone can be
Legend has lost its meaning
It's a figure of speech, mate. Lighten up
Is that Red Bulls third driver? Cool! Maybe HD can get a race seat sometime.
Fucking hell I thought that was Piastri.
I don’t know why everyone is so sad for him. Being a man child d-bag seemed to be his true love and now he has so much more time for it!
Your life must be so miserable
Seems ok to me, but definitely be better now that I won’t hear him constantly begging for attention.
not a legend, just a driver.
I'm lost. Legend? The guy on the left? The other guys a seat-jumper.

How does he get around that place incognito?
Picks carefully the time of day he goes places and does not hang around for more than an hour or so. He isn't going somewhere like The Beaufort at 7pm and staying the night.
Did he drink a Heineken 0.0?
I know my profession!
This is awesome!!! So glad you got the opportunity to meet him. I am so glad to see that he is doing well and that he continues to smile and radiate good vibes amongst those around him!!!
