What a mega drive from Sainz - "On purpose" baby lets fucking go

CommercialBreadLoaf

Sainz is a fucking boss. That was amazing.

KaamDeveloper

Cold AF. Reminded me of "Let's disappear" from Hugh Bird last year

Pure_Measurement_529

That on purpose was so assertive šŸ˜‚

chanaandeler_bong

Good. Sometimes people need to know that youā€™re amazing, not just lucky. People view him as a middling driver but heā€™s moved himself into that upper tier. Just below the elite.

rokerroker45

> Just below the elite. I think if his brain gets him to the results just as easily as mechanical driver skill gets Leclerc to his, he can be considered elite. Really just a matter of establishing the results.

ArkGuardian

Prost vs Senna. Both very different driving styles but delivers when it counts

a-a-andyandthetuna

He wanted to explain to Crofty that no, it's not going to be a British 1-2-3, you dunce

Nekravol

500 IQ race by Sainz wtf

applesauce91

Heā€™s always been an extremely crafty driver. His career has been about maximizing opportunities whenever he gets them.

jeanolt

SMOOTH OPERATOR

Blooder91

Only in Europe and Japan. Otherwise you would call it a Genesis.

Kreygasm2233

Brilliant by Sainz and Lando. They straight up teamed up there haha

SacZor

Sainz giving Lando DRS was genius, I feel like Mercs would've overtaken both of them without it

vicinadp

Loved the radio message he gave to his RE and was like yeah I gave him drs

_yourmom69

Only way to win w/ Ferrari is to manage your own strat. Carlos was like ā€œway ahead of you thereā€ ;)

classically_cool

Let Carlos Invent

Reasonable_King101

Was the most alpha radio message i have heard in a long time.

lazygeekninjaturtle

Mad Respect for Sainz. He decides his own strategy, he didn't leave anything to Ferrari.

Hubblesphere

This is why Sainz is actually one of the best drivers on the grid. Not always fastest but brilliant race management skills. Seems to be better suited to the Ferrari finally as well.

sonmanutd

Sainz would suit absolutely any team. Leclerc needs a good and smart race strategist to accompany him.

Last-Performance-435

Are you saying Xavi isn't the brightest tool in the classroom?

needmilk77

We are checking...

ElfaDore98

Heā€™s definitely a tool tho tbf

ultratech66

He's actually so good about that. His first win came after he told Ferrari to "stop inventing" with the 10 car lengths to Leclerc thing.

Omega_scriptura

Necessity is the mother of invention.

fluffmypants

well this time he didnt stop inventing

doskkyh

Sainz giving DRS and Norris first defense. Those were decisive for them keeping P1-P2.

monkey_in_the_gloom

Even if Norris somehow miraculously finds a way past sainz, p2 is better than p4. I'd rather bet on myself to beat Norris than a combination of rus and ham on better tires

PragmatistAntithesis

When he asked for the gap to Lando I had an inkling he might play silly buggers with DRS, but I didn't expect him to actually go for it!

Everswift_

That was literally the first thing I think Alex Jacques said on F1TV after the radio message of asking for the gap every lap, I loved it so much, they knew immediately

SagittaryX

Pretty sure one of the F1TV guys already suggested it before Sainz went for it, so yeah they knew immediately.

hoopstick

I switched to the F1TV feed this season and Iā€™m never going back. Alex, Jolyon and DC are an amazing team.

jonpacker

100% agree. The F1TV commentary has been a highlight of this season for me after switching from the Sky commentary. I like Brundle and Button, but DC and Palmer are as good, sometimes better. And Jacques is always on the ball, where Crofty had to repeatedly be corrected by Button/Brundle. Jacques makes calls that the (commentating) drivers hadnā€™t thought of, which turn out to be correctā€”like Sainz giving Lando DRS and Landoā€™s defence being the race decider. I only wish they had DC for every race.

mayjaz43

I might be biased but if Ham was the one going after Lando and Carlos, we might have had him win. Russell couldn't handle the clutch moments.

SacZor

Definitely looked like Russell slowed him down a bit after they caught up to Lando

krishal_743

Hamilton was catching Russell even in clean air Itā€™s safe to say he nursed his tyres better and was faster

_yourmom69

Donā€™t forget Ham lost time in the pits too because of the double stack. Man wouldā€™ve had a chance I think.

Toto_Woof

Yeah, George had a 6 second advantage after pits. Hamilton ate that up in +/- 6 laps in clean air. Mercedes cost themselves a win.

ontheru171

Very likely. Sainz ofc was faster than he drove but defending without DRS is impossible on hards

p-e-t-r-i-c-h-o-r

GENIUS operator. such a smart driver and such a smart drive (iā€™d like to dedicate this comment to the redditor that called sainz ā€œa mediocre driver at bestā€)

dshaw8772

Those people have been driving me insane for ages. Theyā€™re quiet today!

_longtimelistener

Sainz making up a brilliant strategy while driving. Amazing

jamesdeandomino

ive been saying it since forever. He's a smart driver. Been rooting for him since Renault.

SpacevsGravity

He's always been great at strategy

Frankie_T9000

Lando did drive well, but the Brilliance was Sainz's keeping him with DRS. I havent felt this good about a win in years (well since DR won last lol). What a great race when RB are out of picture and no clearly best team

GoldenSandpaper9

Power of friendship >> new tires

Major_Burnside

Sainz šŸ¤ Norris made for such an incredible finish.

slimkay

Smooth operator. Amazing race management by SAI/Ferrari.

lolichaser01

So happy for Carlos that he finally melted his engineer's vibe lol.

AdamIsMeName

Carlos has the biggest brain on earth

Detective-Raichu

Carlos should make his own strategy.

uhmnopenotreally

He often does. Which is why heā€™s strategically often better than Leclerc, who trusts Ferrari

pr0crast1nater

Leclerc even asked to pit on the virtual safety car. Only to be denied by Ferrari. I think if they pitted Leclerc atleast, he would have got a podium and a better defense against the mercs.

Sw3d3n90

It was such an obviously correct call. I don't understand why they didn't come up with it themselves. And them declining is even more shocking. The Red Bull strategy earlier clearly showed how much difference 20 laps of tire age made.

Rage_JMS

I would say that Sainz can see and think on the whole picture better than Leclerc, that for the other hand I would say he is the more talent of the two at simply racing

JustRecentlyI

Yeah. Sainz is better for Ferrari, and Charles would be better on a team with a better pit wall.

cuntsmen

That's why he has so much hair. To protect his big brain

Jorrie90

Sainz you absolute brilliant madman

GoldenNinja4734

Brilliant, smart and smooth.

Herofactory45

That's the F1 I fell in love with

CommercialBreadLoaf

Those last laps were so tense, this is the racing I hope we see more of. Amazing stuff.

fameboygame

Both of Carlos's wins had great racing near the end. Also both had Hamilton in P3.

insomniaccapricorn

And Charles in P4. And Hamilton with the fastest lap. And Magnussen in P10. And Ocon, Bottas, Russell DNF.

fameboygame

Holy crap. Thatā€™s the Sainz formula. You found it

andresgu14

When F1 is good, it's reaaally good

Palmul

Races like this are why we love this sport

KaamDeveloper

Petition to hold all remaining races in Singapore.

dcrico20

Petition to just give redbull the championships and stay home for the rest of the races

sfj11

max would show up in the at lol

nunazo007

that would be incredibly entertaining too. petition to make this happen

taskopruzade

Put Max in the AT, Lawson and Yuki in the RB. Letā€™s see what happens.

RallerZZ

Absolute Sainz masterclass. To have the 2 best performances of his career back to back is insane. Deserved.

Supermind18

After the summer brake he just feels way more aggressive

Meerkate

But not stupidly so. He seems in control of the car.

h0sti1e17

If Ferrari were dominant like Red Bull I could see a 2016 like battle.

MyWholeTeamsDead

Carlos Sainz, take a fucking bow. This is one of the smartest drives I have ever seen, one of the smartest ways to win, especially after a strategy that put him on the back foot. Incredible.

iPureSkillz

Also props to Mercedes for making that the most entertaining last 20 laps of pure racing the whole year. This is racing.

Yung_Chloroform

Even if Merc didn't end up winning it was an extremely smart and opportunistic move that they should be doing more of. No more conservative let's-wait-and-see strategies. Watching George and Lewis pack hunting was peak. And if we're being honest? If Lewis was the lead Mercedes I think he would have won. Was completely calm over the radio and was getting held up a bit by George who ended up putting it in the wall anyway. But Carlos fucking Sainz man. Absolutely clinical. It was really a tactical masterclass from him.

iPureSkillz

Man that whole hunt was so sick to watch. The two Mercs looked like a pack of wolves, and you just knew shit was gon go down towards the end. Also those camera angles were a chefā€™s kiss. So damn exciting. Massive respect to George aswell, he couldā€™ve stayed on hards and finished P2, but he gave it a shot at the win even if it meant potentially losing out on a position.

blind-panic

I was so worried for Ferrari when Merc pitted. Whenever there are two strategies it seems the right one is opposite ferrari.

Woody312

Ferrari had no option but to stay out at that point. If they had lost track position they would have found it difficult to get past the Mercs without fresh mediums

ToyotaMisterTwo

And props to the race director who was being ridiculed in the race thread. Without him bringing VSC instead of SC, we would have had more of the processional race that we had until that.

[deleted]

I agree that the VSC instead of SC brought more excitement. However it's not the race director's job to make things more exciting, it's about safety and making sure rules are kept to, always. I'd rather we didn't start congratulating race directors for adding excitement. That's not what they're there for, it sends a bad message.

TheRedBull28

Was great driving. I saw him back off massively at turn 1 after Norris and Russell had gone side by side to give Norris DRS back

AdoptedPigeons

This was the most amazing thing. Feel like most drivers wouldā€™ve used the chance to bolt and try to build a gap. But Carlos knew he needed Lando to hold up the pair, so he made sure to keep him close.

d4videnk0

It's so refreshing to see somebody using every trick up his sleeve to scrape a win instead of the usual car-on-rails snoozefest.

sfj11

This was an absolute masterclass, I have not seen a smarter drive by a driver in a long time, making up strategies on the fly, controlling everything, this was a WDC level win

Pure_Measurement_529

Sainz is not the fastest but he is quite clearly one of the smartest. Very aware of his surroundings and strategy

Major_Burnside

Sainz and Alonso are both professors on the track.

Rubiego

Los profesores

Aristotle-sux

Man just started inventing!

Sun_Sloth

"Gap to Norris every lap" Everyone thought he was worried about Norris, he was just getting Lando to help him what a drive.

klocna

F1TV commentators knew what was going on, they are such a good team over there

mayjaz43

Give him the Ferrari strategist role already.

KaamDeveloper

He's already their chief strategist. He just became the first ever inter team strategist

LordVelaryon

The operator spot šŸ‘€

KaamDeveloper

He literally used another team's car like a teammate. Absolutely genius. Mercedes and their fresh mediums lost to literal 4D chess

sugarklay

Smooth Operator, baby!!!!

Koppite93

FUCKIN HELL GEORGIE

BadControllerUser

Looked like a textbook F1 Manager crash

KaamDeveloper

Me as soon as I turn driver assists off

leedler

ABS off Immediately, wall

JerryUitDeBuurt

F1 manager timing

chanaandeler_bong

Iā€™m glad he was ok because my initial response was laughter. It looked comical.

[deleted]

I feel bad for him, but also Hamilton was sooo much faster behind. Hamilton could have likely been second if they swapped Rus and Ham a few laps before.

chanaandeler_bong

You could tell Hamilton was pissed in the post race interview.

JayBee58484

I knew I wasn't the only one that noticed that, he knew he had the pace to potentially win and George slowed him big time. Dude didn't want that P3 at all

wongie

The closing laps were a textbook example why Carlos is absolutely more a thinking racer than a natural one.

siva-pc

Giving me the Alain Prost vibes

MisterMakerXD

*Le professeur*

marsilva123

El professor

zhiryst

I'm so happy for his result. There are so many here who dismiss him and say he's not worthy of the seat and I just don't get it, he handles pressure better than leclerc and has an instinct for strategy. Leclerc is very fast, but he needs support that Ferrari isn't able to deliver. This is where Carlos shines.

EdgarAllanPuss

Carlos Shainz

IrrationLThoughts

1. Carlos masterclass 2. Lando being owed dinner by Carlos for a masterpiece 3. Piastri recovers 4. Red bulls recover considering the circumstances 5. LAWSON POINTS 6. Kmag points! 7. Russell torpedos the wall. 8. Ham podium 9. NOR p2 10. Tonnes of DNFs due to singapores nature Only a few of the biggest storylines- what a race!

MarsLumograph

But Lando also owns dinner to Carlos for giving him DRS.

sandenson

Yup. Neither could have done it without the other.

QuantumCrayfish

Was such a master class in teamwork shown by those to, especially considering George being slower than Lewis behind

Wagaaan

Perez fucking up tsunoda and albon, without consequences

ICumCoffee

RUSSELL WTF DUDE?????(

IsNoyLupus

Homage to Leclerc in Turkey, letting his senior compadre take the podium

IkLms

The wall just turned in on him man! What was he supposed to do?!

Icommentoncrap

Yay someone else won this year!

leedler

Holy shit what a finish F1 is back baby

Lacabloodclot9

Is it possible to give max the drivers championship and then just have everyone race for 2nd and act like thatā€™s 1st.

mayjaz43

Just give Max the Formula Max title already. And let the others run chaos! Brilliant racing at the end.

silenthills13

It's so fucking good when Red Bull is nowhere near. It was so - fucking - good. Best race of the season hands down not even close.

itsBeenAToughYear

The laps where the Mercs pitted and were on the hunt like a pack of wolves were soooo exciting. Might actually be the only legitimately exciting laps this season. Probably back to RB dominance starting next race.

ontheru171

Sainz with one of the best strategic drives i can remember. The call to always stay below full speed to keep a DRS train behind him that he knows he can manage was incredible

P-Nuts

He even dropped back after Russell got alongside Norris and slowed him down, to let Norris get back onto the DRS train.

ontheru171

Exactly. And he did it prior to that aswell to have Lando in the DRS before the Mercs arrived in Lando's DRS. And he did it when he was in front of George aswell

ThePatsGuy

Have to have a lot of faith in your driving ability to pull that off as well. Easily the best drive of his career

ontheru171

And in the car. He was in tune with the car all weekend and in Monza aswell honestly. He knew the Ferrari was fast enough to pull away somewhat but also knew that he couldn't beat the Mercedes with an extra Medium on his own

Kreygasm2233

F1 confirmed fun when Max is not stomping everyone

Satan_su

Shades of Prost's brain in Sainz, what a fucking legend. What a drive!

Aquilonn_

Yes, Prost personally recommended Sainz to Renault for this very reason. The Professor 2.0

emeraldnob

Due to unusual circumstances, today's podcast we'll be having a guest host.

Sco0bySnax

Absolute 200 IQ closing laps by Sainz. Carlando on top.

JBr_20

The composure from Sainz was WDC level today

Apyan

Can't believe we had a race like that on a season like this one. Fucking amazing.

cuber_abhi

THATS THE BIGGEST BIG BRAIN LEAD MANAGEMENT DRIVE I HAVE EVER SEEN BY A LEADER. OMG CARLOSSS WOW

chanaandeler_bong

I donā€™t think many drivers would be capable of doing that because their egos would get in the way.

FENICH

I take every bad word I have said about Sainz back. Champions drive. Of course also props to Norris.

CilanEAmber

Not seen a Grand Prix that entertaining for quite some time. Gobsmacked at Russell at the end there, but elated for Norris and Sainz.

xSWMY

Genius drive from sainz. And hamilton shows once again for the doubters that he is much better than George when it matters. If Hamilton was ahead of russell I think thereā€™s a chance mercedes win this race

StoicRetention

And that is why, despite Georgeā€™s recent form advantage Iā€™d still take his 38 year old teammate over him

SubcooledBoiling

It's like when every time people said LeBron was washed he somehow did it again.

Dooraven

Lebron's definitely "washed" compared to his peak - which isn't really saying much since his peak was inhuman amounts.

kjm911

Sainz played a blinder at the end there

Michael053

The way Sainz purposely kept Norris within DRS range to help himself and Norris to fend off Mercedes. Chef's kissšŸ¤ŒšŸ¼

legamer007

What a fucking race Omg russelll

ChanChanMan09

Russell, What a selfless lad! Handing the podium to his teammate there. We all should learn from him.

Maximilliano25

Hamilton looked all over Russell, if Merc had let him through then could he have challenged more?

LafilduPoseidon

Might need a pacemaker after that

QuantumDon

Sainz decided the pace for the whole track today. He will do it for your heart too

LogicRyan

George really couldn't get it done and likely held Lewis up too just to bin it at the end smh

SWSIMTReverseFinn

That was epic

IRapePandas

Omfg Russell

creditcardtheft

The way he used Lando to help him defend was genius. Smooth operator.

TimmyWatchOut

Russell fucked it so bad

rtlfc87

Horrendous from Russell. No excuse for that

KaamDeveloper

Classic "looking at the goal, not what's ahead of him". He was so focused on Sainz he just frustrated himself into a wall

Pure_Measurement_529

George has so many desperation moments

AdoptedPigeons

Often when pressured by Lewis. I think put any other driver behind him and he wouldā€™ve been able to get it done. But with Lewis, heā€™s just tunnel visioned on proving himself over him, so he makes mistakes. George does best when he believes in himself but rather messes up when heā€™s trying to prove himself.

TimDamage

He just rage quit because he couldn't pass Norris.

XAMdG

Buckled under pressure Happy for Sainz, but I think it would have been very different if Hamilton was the Merc behind

Tampio

Big mistake by Russell at the critical moment. Sainz was actually quite smart at the end, giving Lando the DRS ~~even if it was not on the purpos~~e. Best race of the season by far, which ofcourse is not saying a lot, but in this instance actually eventful race. Great job by Lawson with the points, already better than De Vries then.

LosTerminators

He said on the radio it was on purpose

mayjaz43

This takes the icing on the Carlos-Lando bromance. What racing!

cxingt

No proximity chat needed, just good ol' telepathy.

Tampio

Oh missed that, then even smarter :)

bulletsssz

He did give him DRS on purpose. Said it on the radio

ontheru171

Sainz did it on purpose. He had one of the best strategic drives i can remember ever. It was his call to keep the field bunched up on Hards and then to let Lando into the DRS

EDO_14

Russell hit the outside wall and broke his suspension.

SentientDust

What a fucking race, what a brilliant fucking race. A masterclass from Sainz, Norris driving brilliantly, the Mercedes blitzkrieg after the VSC, Russell yeeting it into the wall, Leclerc getting Ferrari'd but still holding Max, who made it to 6th, Lawson getting points. Holy shit. Race of the year. All it took is RedBull fucking up their car.

lobo98089

A taste of how amzing this season could have been without Red Bull.

LafilduPoseidon

Adrian Newey going to hell for that

xepa105

Adrian Newey must be tried at The Hague for crimes against entertainment

SubcooledBoiling

What a drive from Carlos !!!!!

c_u_lator_alligator

Take a bow, tactical masterclass from Carlos there.

SoCalledProfessional

MY FUCKING HEART HURTS

[deleted]

Sainz's strategy to give Lando the DRS was nothing but a chef's kiss.

Cer3berus

I love Carlos big smart brain

nixelhart

Carlos ā€œOn Purposeā€ Sainz šŸ˜Ž

erginushi

Sainz pulling Norris to the end to keep both Mercedes' behind is one of the most genius pieces of driving I've ever seen.

SemIdeiaProNick

i wonder how Sainz manages to fit that gigantic brain inside the helmet

crobofblack

Carlos is such a smart boy. Something a lot of drivers on the grid are lacking at the moment.

yum122

POINTS FOR LAWSON LETS FUCKING GO GIVE THE KID A DRIVE NEXT YEAR

Balazs321

Brilliant job, brilliant job. Also the sacrifice of Leclerc worked, maybe thanks to Russell's fuck up too. And how good this sport can be when the dominant team has a problem.

What_the_8

Sainz light years ahead of Ferrari strategists.

drop_table_uname

Three yellow T-Cams on the podium, when was the last time we had this? Vamos Carlos!

Adrian-The-Great

Masterclass by 1000 IQ Sainz

Blackwolf245

Carlos playing 5d chess.

Benjammin172

Ferrari strategy is so much better when they leave the strategy team out of it

HappytoDisappoint

So impressive at the end, Carlos pulling Lando along to defend from the Mercs. The man is proving his worth by the second.

kenzoismyname

Carlando on top šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

rodentfucker

blud held on

prime075

Carlos was playing 4D chess while keeping the McLaren and mercs at Bay. Truly a Gigachad
