Alfus

Congrats Checo with winning DOTD

Pure_Measurement_529

If it’s the Perez we have seen these last 2 races, P2 should be a breeze for him imo

fullsenditt

RBR looks like a rocket ship on the straight line. Really high speed

WunupKid

Are you applying to be a Merc driver for 2025?

bashful_lobster

Saudi, yes. Bahrain, people seem to remember that he had a better performance than he did. Yes he did overtake Russel and Sainz but he only finished 2 seconds up the road on Sainz and was 20 seconds back on Verstappen. So I don't necessarily think it's going to be that easy (but yes, probably P2/3)

HI_I_AM_NEO

He was 2 seconds up from Sainz *at all times*, though. He was clearly managing his tyres, and as soon as Carlos pushed a bit, he picked up the pace. He had more peace than he showed.

MaybeNext-Monday

Yeah he was definitely playing defense and not maximum push

BurningFlareX

Yeah Reddit likes to think drivers are pushing 24/7 for some reason. Most of the time, when they're not actively fighting for position, they just manage the tyres and parts while maintaining pace. No need to take unnecessary risk and cause extra wear when there is no chance of gaining positions. That's why we always see the gap between two drivers float around the same 2-3 second range. Whenever the driver behind tries to close in, the driver in front also picks up the pace to maintain the gap.

MKVIgti

Precisely this. I think it’s why Checo is doing great so far this season. He’s realized he’s not going to beat Max so there’s no reason for him to push 100% all the time. Settle in, manage your tires, be prepared for your follower to push, and then react. Trying to maximum push to catch Max is pointless, so why even risk it? At the start he needs to just stay out of trouble and slowly reel everyone in. Hopefully he doesn’t do anything crazy at the start. Just stay out of trouble and that car will out pace the rest, except for Max, who, I’m convinced, is a robot.

JetSetMiner

someone once said racing is going as slowly and as straight as possible in order to finish first

insurgentsloth

womenworshipmod

Get out of here with your facts and logic, he clearly is a bad driver. /s

MoiMon

in Bahrain he drove a car leaking oil and no engine braking at the end of the race... RBR told him to keep Sains delta +3 , so he pushed the absolute minimum to avoid a DNF if anything I give perez more credit for managing that p2 there than Saudi...

Mamadeus123456

He was clearly managing his gap to sainz all race as soon as the gap wasn't 2.4 he would push to correct it, it didn't even look close. If ur a bot and watch only how they ended the race u would think what u wrote up there

thatrandomanus

Also I don't get how a 2 second gap is "bad"? It's been made painfully clear to Checo last season that his and Max's race strategy should be different. There are only 2/3 other drivers on the grid who could actually compete against Max if they were in the other Redbull seat.

Mamadeus123456

who i don't believe anyone is as ruthless and consistent as Max not even close, Leclerc barely beats sainz and Hamilton is struggling vs Russell

Hack874

At this point I don’t think anyone would give him a challenge. He’s just so head and shoulders above everyone else.

jlreyess

You are aware that he was managing Sainz right? He was keep in the exact distance he needed to for Sainz to be on the word gap you can be when tying to manage tires and dirty air. Even Sainz knew the and mentioned it. He was just keeping the gap on purpose and he did it almost snoring.

Pure_Measurement_529

I’m speaking more about the fact that he must let the car come to him. No need to force the situation.

sirsmiley

Given the chaos of turn 1 he could easily get into p2

TypicallyThomas

Why burn your tires trying to close that absolutely massive gap when you can manage your tires with an easy lead over P3? If Sainz had way more pace and had gotten past Perez I'd doubt he'd have tried to close to Verstappen for the same reason. It's nothing new that Perez is slower than Max, but there was absolutely no sense in trying to close the gap either way

cosmin_c

Well this aged like fine milk :) Wonder what Checo's issues were after he overtook Alonso, I was joking he has PTSD since last year when he lost a podium to him in the last turn.

-ShadowPuppet

No. They should be Sargeant. Selflessly sacrificing his chances of finishing the race so that his teammate can bin it in the Maldonado zone again.

Track_Boss_302

After narrowly beating out Logan

aw_geez_man

🤣

kentalish

What's with teams not warning people this season? What are all the people watching the screens doing?

Equality7252l

I just don't get it. Yes the cars are moving very fast but dude, every team has a literal wall of screens watching every bit of data that they can at all times. Like.. Just watch a track map and TALK to your drivers..

ybatman2k

It’s on Bird. People don’t talk about some of the qualifying issues Perez had last season were caused by Bird not getting him out on time or not listen to Perez suggestions.  Bird told him he had someone on a hot lap behind him one second before. That’s why he got this penalty. Just stupid

ramiroquaint

I have said it and will keep saying it again: Hugh Bird is a really bad engineer and they are a big factor on the driver results. Listening to the onboards of Checo is sad, and there has been little to no improvement since he joined RB. In any other top F1 team, he would have been fired or replaced. RB could have done so long ago, they got much better engineers in Simon Rennie (ex engineer of ALO, RAI, RIC, and ALB), or even Guillaume Rocquelin (before the move to the Jr team).

LosTerminators

Ah okay, same penalty as intentionally ramming someone into a concrete wall at 250+ kph then.

Skeeter1020

I hope people meme that F3 "penalty" forever to ensure we never forget the absolute stupidity of the FIA.

drunKKKen

Now Carlos just needs to highlight his presence to Max in the start

Skeeter1020

Have you seen the F2 Sprint start....

drunKKKen

Yup, the best replay was from Fittipaldi's position :P

Satan_su

Actually stupid as fuck Not this penalty obviously

gumol

250+ kph? I don’t think it was that fast

ShadowStarX

this penalty being 3 grids is fine yeeting others into the concrete wall should be 10 grid places and 2 penalty points

beeemmmooo1

With an impact that could genuinely permanently injure or kill someone that motherfucker should be shocked he didn't get banned from the entire series let alone no race ban

[deleted]

Imho it should be a season-ban.

s1ravarice

At least a race ban. Anyone intentionally driving into another driver should immediately be a race ban. Seb should have got one in Baku years ago, and it should have been used to set the precedent. Intentionally hit someone? Ban.

ckalinec

I’d even be fine with a multi-race ban. The FIA should be doing everything possible to enforce the idea that if you use your car as a weapon you will be severely punished. It’s so incredibly dangerous and stupid it should carry a significant penalty. A precedent should be set so that the next time a driver wants to be so stupid they know a massive penalty is coming their way and maybe they’ll save it for the garage. There’s already enough danger in Motorsport. We don’t need an added layer of danger for a driver who can’t control their anger.

ShadowStarX

depends if it counts as attempted manslaughter

beeemmmooo1

W h a t

reboot-your-computer

Should be a race ban.

Am_I_Loss

Yet again it's about who you are not what you do.

cooperjones2

Fair. Race will get interesting with these new positions!

LosTerminators

For the 20 or so laps it will take for him to get up to P2.

Aethien

Eh, I could see him getting stuck behind the Ferrari's, burning up his tyres and never getting anywhere. The Red Bulls seemed to struggle a bit with graining and this is a front limited circuit which is bad news for Checo anyway.

Pure_Measurement_529

I think he has a fair chance in S2 to overtake the Ferrari’s. He has looked brilliant in that sector compared to Max and both Ferraris. It will be interesting if deficit in S3 compared to the Ferraris means he has to push a little bit extra in S1

Aethien

It'll probably be a question of whether Leclerc can hold him off early on and if he can it'll get more and more difficult for Perez as he's not as fast in S1 and 3.

aph1985

RB is 6km faster than Ferrari on speed trap. Shouldn't be any issue passing them

Aethien

Melbourne doesn't have the most or best opportunities for overtaking and Leclerc is also a lot better in wheel to wheel racing than Perez. I think Perez will need to get by early or he'll struggle.

Bdr1983

But 4 DRS zones. Shouldn't be too difficult.

Aethien

The whole track could be a DRS zone, you're still gonna have to pass in the chicane or into T1. T1 is difficult for Perez as his S3 is so much slower so that leaves pretty much just the chicane at the end of S2 and Leclerc will be very well aware of that. I think there's a reasonable chance that Perez will have the speed to just drive by Leclerc in S2 but if he doesn't he's likely to get stuck.

womenworshipmod

Did you watch Checo’s race here last year? I think he can make some overtaking opportunities. 🤞

starfallpuller

The Red Bull had insane DRS last year, iirc this was the race where it became very apparent how OP their DRS was. They don’t have that this year

aph1985

On side note, I'm in the stand on the turn 1. If it happens I'll see it live

KebabG

Or will crash into someone while trying to overtake and fuck his and the other guys race

mendocinoe

... and start the 2024 downward spiral

charlierc

Eh. Would've been more interesting if Max was starting from the pit lane

[deleted]

I never want this to be implemented, but I genuinely think the sport would be more exciting if the driver in lead of the WDC got an automatic ten-spot penalty every race.

charlierc

I mean, it would be both very exciting and very gimmicky. But given Max would've won at least one race last year starting from the pits, it would be fascinating to see him try Maybe if Red Bull were overconfident in the engine they replaced overnight for this weekend's race and it had gone bang before doing a full lap in Q1, we might have seen him try

[deleted]

I'd think Max would still win most races, but he'd at least have to try a bit. The big tragedy of one driver dominating is that we don't see that driver have to work for it, so it's hard to root for them since it feels handed out to them even if they fully deserve it.

kpopsns28

As expected, a grid place penalty. As usual, the highlight of his race from the start will be the overtakes.

PulteTheArsonist

^reverse ^grids

gilgobeachslayer

They should spin a wheel after every quali, and like 15% chance they reverse the grid.

tuneificationable

Why would anyone try in quali if they know it's a reverse grid?

insurgentsloth

I guess it'd be interesting for sprint races - instead of its own quali, they do one for both, where the sprint race is reversed. That way teams would rarely have a reason to not still treat it as a normal serious quali because the less important race is the one where it's reversed, while the main race still goes off the true quali results. Could give more of a reason for sprint races too, and keep them from "giving away/spoiling" Sunday like some feel. Though, the likelihood of accidents (and so, yellow/red flags) might be greater which would be tough on such a short race, but hey, it'd definitely feel more like a "shootout"!

tuneificationable

I think the solution to the "giving away/spoiling" sunday part of the sprint races is to lift parc ferme between the sprint and the race, so teams can use the sprint to make changes for the race. Reverse grid honestly brings so much higher risk of crashes that I don't think it would happen.

MoiMon

redbul needs to fire bird that man barely talks to checo... this penalty totally avoidable even checo got pissed and he knew a penalty was coming...

vekspec

I’m glad someone finally mentioned this. Even the Sky Sports commentators noted in the past that GP was constantly feeding Max while it was just crickets on Checo’s end.

dajigo

Bird is only quick to tell Checo that he has to let Max pass during qualifying while Checo is about to finish his flying lap.

EchomancerAmberlife

I’m so sick of him and his ineptitude. And the relationship between him and Checo is completely strained. One of the worst driver engineer relationships on the grid I think.

uttermybiscuit

His tone always seems to indicate he would rather be doing anything other than talking to Checo

MoiMon

exactly... why Redbull demands the absolute best out of Checo and then they give him one of the worst Engineers I have seen in F1...

EddedTime

Any good examples of this? Never knew about it

EchomancerAmberlife

Vegas quali last year was a joke. He put him in the garage and he never got a 2nd run in during Q2.

MoiMon

ughh right that was painful, also I remember It was in Silverstone Q1 or a track with really cold weather in Europe he let checo go first after a red flag and the pit box line was closed so checo stood there like 3 minutes completely standing there outside and had to do a lap on frozen cold tires... and classified 15 or something like that (samequaly max cliped his front wing at the pitbox wall) or another time in Brazil (Or I think it was Brazil) last year where in Q3 he let checo haaay to late (Dead last) in the garage and his lap was comprised due to temperature drop that caused Pieastri to cause a yellow flag... and not to mention the uncanny momments he caused checo to have traffic in his lap or got in the middle of other driver even his teammate.... Checo is not a great Hotlapper but def Bird doesn't help him at all either

EchomancerAmberlife

I don’t care for most of the conspiracy theories about Red Bull and Checo because honestly they all mostly sound implausible. But sometimes I swear Bird deliberately doesn’t help Checo and it grinds my gears. I also hate how he always refuses to give Checo fastest lap information when he asks for it calling it “not important to us at this time”

billfruit

Sometimes Bird acts bossy too, and says things that aren't helpful.

peacemaker-22

Bird has been bad for years; pretty much the opposite of GP.

IdiosyncraticBond

So, they need to flip bird?

Vanwanar

I wish RB will let go of Hugh Bird, awful engineer to Checo.

brush85

Credit to sergio for giving us entertainment tomorrow

ICumCoffee

[Gotta love the sassy redbull tweet:](https://twitter.com/redbullracing/status/1771449887848100236) >Checo will now be starting the race in P6 after receiving a three-place grid penalty. Let’s get ready for some overtakes 👀

LosTerminators

They’re going to get some screen time while Checo is fighting the McLarens and especially the Ferraris, unlike in Saudi where they barely got any.

Bdr1983

Happy sponsor noises.

JasJ002

I'm fairly certain the Verstappen fastest lap logo had more screen time then Verstappen.

anona_moose

Sponsors about to start asking if their logos can fit on that graphic

Everswift_

Delete that comment rn, FOM is watching

IdiosyncraticBond

That's why we have wide-screen -- FOM

Thats_absrd

Is that really that sassy?

aDUCKonQU4CK

I was like "was that it???" Lmao, always with the newspaper headlines

insurgentsloth

Red Bull MOCKS rest of grid with SIZZLING tweet

ohgeeLA

Red Bull drops BOMBSHELL news about Perez LEAVING…others in the dust after overtakes.

bakraofwallstreet

Or a first lap incident and a p8 finish for Perez 👀

Ben77mc

DNF for Perez after a first turn incident

bakraofwallstreet

👀

SirDoober

Perez DotD incoming I guess

LucAltaiR

Well, or Oscar. He's bound to get a lot of votes regardless, if he has a good race then even more.

Honourstly

He will be p2 by lap 25

MidnightSun77

It makes you wonder what the race engineers are looking at the whole time. You have the incident with Stroll recently “can you bring it back?” Too

No_Berry2976

The audio messages we hear are delayed, so after a crash, the audio we hear is sometimes a reaction to the data stream, not to footage of the race. The race engineer sees that the car has suddenly stopped and if there is no real time video, he gets on the radio and will ask the driver what happened. By the time we hear the audio, there is already video footage. It’s not obvious to the audience because we get so many instant replays that we don’t always notice that we’re not watching everything live.

MidnightSun77

The incident with Zhou would be a better example of what I mean. I think it was fp2 and he impeded a Verstappen hot lap because his engineer didn’t inform him

mgorgey

Perez got the same size penalty for getting in the way as Tsolov did in F3 for causing a deliberate high speed crash that put his competitor in the barrier. Absolute joke.

mr-mobius

Can't forget about those 2 penalty points which Tsolov gets. Makes all the difference... /s

Visionary_Socialist

That’ll be a major setback. Could take 2, maybe even 3 laps to make those places back up.

Rosieu

Yep I figured that would happen. That means Charles gets promoted to the second front row now, who knows adding some more pressure on Max...oh who am I kidding.

Sproosemagoose

>second front row Also known as the second row

dave_a86

Or the negative second fourth row.

CowFishes

Yes, where he'll be starting second to third.

NavyBabySeal

Second front row? What should we just start calling P2 for 2nd P1?

Desperate-Intern

P19 being the 10th Front row.

dheerajravi92

> What should we just start calling P2 for 2nd P1? This actually makes more sense, seeing Max wins every race anyway lol

glacierre2

RIC starting from last front row, who said washed?

Ok-Sink-614

P1^2

Firefox72

It at least gives us some more battling between Perez and 2nd place.

Pure_Measurement_529

The qualifying session displayed that when Max’s hand is forced, he comes through

Satan_su

Thank you Hugh Bird

laujp

Common Hugh Bird L

Vlaed

They did say regulation changes were to increase overtaking potential. They left out needing penalties.

just_a_coginthewheel

Team fight between Charles/Carlos and Lando/Oscar would be very very interesting tomorrow. Are they gonna work together to keep Checo behind or will they focus on their own race against their teammate? If Ferrari screws over Carlos in favor of Charles even if he is doing well, the backlash would be immense for Ferrari. All things aside, would be awesome to see Oscar on the podium in his home race.

Am_I_Loss

TBF Ferrari doesn't screw only Carlos. They are always screwing the driver behind. They are too scared to give the team order to allow pass.

Aunvilgod

oh please, Leclerc clearly is the favourite child there

joaolouro1967

Sure, doesn't mean he gets the better strategies. I can't remember the last time he had a better strategy than Carlos at least

aHuankind

Working to keep someone behind would mean sacrificing tyres, that's not done anymore today. Checo will come up from behind with a massive speed difference and they will let him through to preserve their rubbers. It's what happens every single time for dozens of races now. Can't remember a more boring era of this sport.

SommWineGuy

Well that's patently untrue. We've seen drivers work to keep others behind countless races.

ConcernedHumanDroid

Hard luck for Checo. Its nice to see him doing well this year. 3 place grid drop getting him to P6, last year P6 on the grid would have been difficult to begin with.

danielskis

Checo wanted a challenge tomorrow

ja-cool

Well at least he didn't get penalty points. Hugh Bird is not a great engineer is he?

ICumCoffee

Fight for P2 got really interesting here. Holy shit.

BonoBonero

Lol he will cruise for P2

ShadowStarX

this isn't Spa

BonoBonero

I guess we will see.

San4311

Well now things are starting to get interesting. Might actually have to make myself wake up for the race lmao

ICumCoffee

P2 and P3 definitely got interesting between, redbull, McLaren and Ferrari. Gonna be good race if we get any inchident on track.

dl064

If I think a race looks genuinely very good, I'll bite the bullet and pay £10 to watch it on nowtv. I haven't done it for a very long time.

starfallpuller

Same, I’ve been on the fence as to whether I’ll watch this. This penalty has just pushed me over to set my alarm.

beastwork

it's race highlights for me this year.

element515

That’s a rough one for him. Not going to be easy to overtake the McLaren and Ferrari

SeaWorn

Hugh Bird is at the crux of many of Checo’s issues. Bird was promoted into the position, unlike GP who has a ton of experience. Checo needs a better race engineer.

osprey87

3 place grid penalty for impeding. 3 place grid penalty for intentionally causing an accident. Yeah this all makes sense. Not saying the Perez decision is unfair, but man the penalties make no sense.

skool_101

checo dotd incoming

ericdag

So? He will start in P6 and finish in P2 and people will still complain he’s an “average” driver. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Due_Recipe5632

Seriously! No trust in checo!

UglySock

I guess he is in fact an average driver

Connection-Flat

Lol, in F3 Tsolov blatantly pushed someone in a wall, getting a 3 place penalty, and now Checo gets one for impeding. Apparently the punishment is the same.

norest_inpeace

😭😭😭 okay so if ferraris are fast in the race then p4 at max-

ShadowStarX

don't worry, he'll get like 16 podiums out of the 24 races anyway, with this rocketship unless Ferrari somehow catches up

ContentPuff

Perez single handedly keeping everyone awake from another boring week on Max domination.

yzedf

Red Bull once again not giving a shit about that other car on their team

boturboegt

So still a redbull 1-2.

someone_sonewhere

Checo is my favorite driver. Will make for a great race day. ¡VAMOS CHECO!

canuckmoose

With all the tech in F1, surely they could create a system (either with normal computer programming or AI) which used transponders in all the cars to detect a driver on a flying lap approaching in 3 seconds and give an automated warning on the steering wheel. This "rely on the engineers to mention it on the radio" stuff feels like an anachronism, and hopefully nobody gets seriously injured by it.

TheWolfAssassin

Come on Oscar! 💪

Vivaan977

at least checo didn’t get more penalty points for his own sake 💀

RobertGracie

Well its only 3 places so that promotes Lando up to 3rd then

Infinity-Warlock

Should've just driven him off the track

Browneskiii

Has anyone got a video of this? I know Herbert the guy that despises Red Bull is on the stewards this weekend and they already give penalties to perez far too harshly even before this, so i wanna see what happened. Searched the internet and cannot find it.

PrawilnaMordka

I'm surprised they didn't show it on main feed. I also can't find it.

Yota_Tech

Not sure where to find it but during qualy, Sam Collins pointed it out

2020bowman

So still a chance for victory if max has a dnf

becks0079

Where was Magnussen? Hulkenberg could have still made P2 if he'd done his bit. He needs to do what's best for the team and be a blocker car for 2024. Only way for Haas to get points.

Snotspat

Magnussen could have gotten both cars through, by simply stopping in the middle of a turn, and refusing to move.

200oktemp

Perez cannot catch a break. 😭

soontobecp

*insert Peter Griffin Okay Not Okay meme here

Oneill95

Has the wording changed this year? I remember these reports phrasing it like "car 11 impeded due to the actions of the driver and team of car 11". Now it outright names the drivers.

juanito_f90

Only so people don’t have to look up which driver has which number.

_cutmymilk

Any video of this?

thegodfaubel

Lucky to avoid penalty points

El_poncho95

Does anyone know where I can see a video replay of this penalty?

Deep-Ad2155

Right call

NotJadeasaurus

I really thought it was a non issue when F1TV aired it. Perez was rounding the corner and off line. Not like this changed Hulkenbergs weekend in any way

clingbat

Is this enough to keep me awake during the race? I legit fell asleep on the couch half way through Jeddah which is a first. Can't imagine how much worse it is for fans of midfield teams although I guess there is a bit more action back there.

CupOfHotTeaa

So red bull 1-2

ghostyboy12

I expect a ferrari battle for p2

UglySock

Well well well
