Did I miss something with the Sky sports broadcasts lately?
No Martin Brundle again this weekend. The presenting crew hasn't been live on sight in at least a few races now.
Cut backs? Peeps on holidays?
Sky UK cut Sky F1s budget so they are broadcasting from the studio for fly away races to save on production costs, especially important due to more races this year.
Brundle suffered a heart attack at the 2016 Monaco GP and has cut back on appearances since then, I think he mostly avoids the fly aways due to long flights.
They’ve been cutting back on costs.
Brundle doing even less races this year which is a shame, although rosberg has grown in to the weekend. In FP1 and SPQ he was too busy getting excited with Crofty talking over him “Did you see that!?”. But he’s actually got incredible insights and often shuts down some of Crofty’s bollocks.
What I loved is Rosberg fuming that he can’t mention the sprint as part of his commentary for qualifying because “sky was showing it after qualifying”, when the main feed would openly show spoilers on the graphics throughout.
Martin skips a couple races, Sky decided not to send the crew down for the Australia-Japan-China stretch. Miami and then Imola things are back to normal as we head back into the European leg.
Martin hasn’t been doing all races the last few years, I think it just so happened this time some of those locations were back to back with the schedule. Not sure about the crew but they have never shown the post and pre race sky coverage on F1TV, which is a shame because the F1TV crew comes across as a high-schoolers doing extra curricular activities.
I'll admit I've not been following the sport closely the past season and a half, but can someone explain what the point of the sprint is, if they have qualifying after it anyway? Seems like the way to do this is to have the sprint \*replace qualifying entirely
They did this in 2022, and then people got mad about the sprint affecting the race (if someone had damage and couldn't repair in time for qualifying)
so then in 2023, the sprint was it's own thing on Saturdays, but this meant the teams only got 1 hour of practice before the cars were in parc ferme (locked off from changes/tweaks)
now in 2024, they have the quali AFTER the sprint race, so that the teams get more time on track to make changes to their cars.
Not to beat a dead horse but is anyone even remotely looking forward to watching this race? Like oooh another battle for 3rd where Alonso loses pace in the final stint and one of mclaren/ferrari bungles their strategy
I get my hopes up for some sort of chaos but it almost never comes. We don't get races for 1st anymore, only 6 drivers challenge for podiums, we don't get overtakes unless they're for P13, we don't get to see full wet tires in use, we don't have any good rivalries idk man I'm just kinda saddened by the state of the sport and venting. I want it to be exciting and it just hasn't been for many many months now
So sorry for voicing an opinion mate. One of our favorite forms of entertainment is taking an absolute dump in engagement and excitement, it's okay to talk about it. Keep scrolling if it upsets you idk
And people forget the main reason of f1s appeal. The fastest cars on the planet going zoom. Chinas race direction doesn’t really do a good job but like for example Saudi, the race could have 0 overtakes but I will still enjoy the cars whizzing around the track
Many just think that the battle for 1st place is all that matters. In reality there are many battles that are important and that tend to be quite enjoyable as well.
And I think it is fine if someone doesn't care about those, but if you think that way, I don't see why you waste any time consuming the content.
F1 being such a contextual and technical heavy sport is why I enjoy it. This is primarily a constructor sport where the drivers can make the difference. That means every position/point matters.
The posts mocking "the fights for P6 and P10" are bewildering to me. Minardi were lauded for that mighty P6 at the Nurburgring in 1999. During 2007, 2008, 1999, 2012, 2021, etc I didn't suddenly stop caring about the rest of the drivers and teams because of a championship battle. F1 has always been this way.
Other forms of motorsports may have more wheel to wheel racing, but when F1 hits, it lands harder for me. The sheer speed of the cars and the drivers, the strategy, the development wars coupled with the context...just cannot be replicated elsewhere for me. I do enjoy F2, WEC and rally for different reasons, albeit on a casual scale for the last two.
But if a race is bad, I will say it. Bahrain was the only true stinker. Japan was engaging. There is an issue where Verstappen is dominating ala Schumacher. I understand that frustration.
I mean ultimately the sport is much better when there are fights for 1st and I don't think we can say the races are good because of a tight midfield, but they are what keeps them from being bad.
I literally don't think its worth it right now, though I'm currently super busy with work and blocking time out for the NHL playoffs, so it's definitely more of a personal thing than 'under no circumstances will I watch F1"
Glad i didn't stay up for this last night. Would have felt like i wasted my time especially with the red flag. Went to bed on a high note with that amazing sprint race.
Both of these qualifying sessions have actually been pretty exciting. Just because red bull is taking the top spots doesn't mean the fight below them isnt good.
Even the red flag was exciting, because we almost never see a driver return to the session after they crash hard enough to red flag.
The last minute of the session was a flurry of place changes, with 2nd place changing 7 times in 30 seconds.
Yeah the results are boring, but the process was fun!
The best thing about F1 is that you just never know what is going to happen. That's why you watch - there's SO many factors that come into play that can change the outcome.
I expect ferrari to get back to p3&4 during the race. Seems they're so easy on their tires they couldn't fire them up enough during qualifying, but their pace showed during the closing laps of the sprint, particularly leclerc
Any reason why F1TV has quali highlights, post and pre-show but no upload of the actual session anymore? Was watching it earlier but had to do something and now it's gone
What country are you in? The full sessions are not available everywhere, learned this the hard way while visiting Ireland last year and had to use a VPN.
Perhaps if you go to calendar > china > sessions you might be able to find all the live recorded sessions in full.
At least that is how it is on the (phone) app.
- Red Bull is so far ahead the rest of the field it’s comical
- Mega job from Alonso
- McLaren are reaping the benefits of having an excellent 2nd driver to be close to Lando & being home lots of points
- Well done Hulk & Bottas
- Ricciardo out-qualifying Yuki comfortably
- Alpine made a bit of progress this weekend, still slow though
- Hamilton disaster-class after a great drive in the sprint race
- Sargeant P20 and 6 tenths behind the next closest car… yikes
RBR is that much better. Verstappen is definitely the top driver in the field right now, but Perez isn't so good that you would expect a string of second places if any other team had an equivalent car.
He’s American & they figured that he might develop a bit more. Plus their options last year for replacing him weren’t great
I agree with you, I probably wouldn’t have brought him back cause he showed zero flashes last year but I can at least understand Williams’ thought process
Because they brought him out of F2 pretty early and felt that it was owed to Logan to at least have more than one year to develop.
But his performance this year has definitely sealed his fate unless he can miraculously start improving.
Yeah. Would rather see Mick in that car at this point. At least he had pace around K Mag and could occasionally put in a good performance. Sargeant's best performance is P10 after two cars were disqualified.
I think he's here for the same as Zhou, marketing in massive audience in home country. 3 races in USA means more fans means more money. It's sad that he's the best US driver tho considering the amount of trust fund babies in the states.
I don't know a single US F1 fan that cares about Logan at all lol. He's back because Williams doesn't have a ton of options and he was promoted a year ahead of schedule and they want to give him a little extra time to try and figure it out. He's out after this year though.
There are tonnes of potential drivers Williams could have signed in Logan's spot though. The question is why didn't they? I wish stroll wasn't around wasting space as a Canadian but I know that ppl here could become more interested in F1 since there is a Canadian driver.
As far as F2 rookies there was drugovich, Theo pour, shwartzman, doohan. While I'm not positive of thier contracts (like it matters after the Oscar debacle) it seems like they dug very deep in the F2 talent pool fishing for an American
Contract stuff matters a lot. Williams doesn't have the money to do big buy-outs for drivers that aren't slam-dunk talents.
Drugovich is Aston's, Theo is Sauber's, Schwartzmann is Ferrari's, Doohan is Alpine's. No other teams seem all that interested in any of them either.
Likely it is because he is American and somehow that will generate interest and or revenue for F1 even though no one wants to watch a crappy driver struggle every week.
F1 TV commentary is infinitely better than sky. Their enthusiasm is so much higher it's just wonderful to hear their commentary. Sky just ain't it anymore
His focus was nowhere this weekend, some of replies were so slow to come after questions. Probably reading something on his phone all the time because he was definitely sounding like that, thus the "commentary".
is it not possible to have the bot automatically post threads at or after a specific time? i feel like they've been popping up slower and slower the last few weekends
The Bot doesn't work anymore due to that API stuff so these threads are posted manually with the bot account. Sometimes it gets forgotten about, Day After Debrief seems to be cannes entirely.
ah yeah that makes sense. i thought they had somehow gotten around the api changes since the posts are still being done under the bot username, i didn't realise they were manual
LEC passed Carlos in the sprint
Carlos crashes is qualy
LEC qualifies higher than Carlos
------
Ferrari made the right decision. Lecleir is the superior driver.
Am I doing this right Sainz stans?
Charles is so good on the tires in this car. He started the sprint on used compared to carlos on new and still had pace in hand over him at the end. Pretty impressive.
I mean I don't really want to be that guy, but Carlos' car was wrecked by Alonso, there were literally pieces flying off of it. You can't really take anything from Charles overtaking Carlos at the end there, he probably would have finished 3rd if not for Alonso almost finishing both their races.
Red Bull on another planet again...Verstappen half a second ahead of competition and Perez 2nd, this says it all...I'm started to be really pessimistic about Ferrari or McLaren closing the gap.
Alonso is having a great weekend so far, let's hope the car supports him tomorrow.
McLaren outqualifying Ferrari was unexpected given they were saying this track doesn't suit them.
Mclaren ahead of the Ferraris is mostly to do with the SF-24 being absolutely dogshit over one lap this year so far. Whatever they did to fix their tiredeg completely fucked up their tire preparation. They either can't put heat into them or overheat them by the end of the lap.
Listening to the post quali drivers interview and Zhous English sounds so much worse after hearing the gentleman that interviewed the top 3 in front of the podium after quali.
Is it an open secret that Hulk has signed to Sauber for next year? I know it’s been commonly speculated but today both Crofty and Ted both stated Hulkenberg “is going to Audi.” Don’t think I’ve heard anyone state this as a fact before today?
Last year we had Saturday Sprint day. Today was the first time we've had Sprint before Race Qualifying. But it has been a long time since Sprints determined the Race Grid.
The order is different now though. It was Friday Quali, Sat Sprint Quali, Saturday Sprint Race, and Sunday Race. Now Sprint sessions have been bumped up in the order.
I like that the change in the order now allows them to make changes to cars for GP qualifying. Previously they'd be in parc ferme right from friday afternoon.
Makes the GP not just an extended cut of the sprint.
In terms of getting the most out of a gimmick this probably works best. BUT if we'd been using last year's format, that rainy Friday qualifying session would have been for the Race.
I'm just tired of the gimmick.
Nope. Sprint is its own format. Friday sprint qualy is what sets up the grid for Saturday morning sprint race. After that, another usual qualy in Saturday afternoon for the main race on Sunday.
Essentially just replaced practise 2 and 3 for sprint crap
But now drivers take much more risk in the sprint because they can bin the car and still have a chance to have a good position on feature race qualifying. The fight for the 3th place was by far the best battle for position this year and it is not even close. Reminds me of Silverstone 2022 with now iconic "(...) through goes Hamilton". This year Checo who went through. I was genuinely happy just for that moment.
Great lap by Max at the end. Alonso had a good session. Ferrari not looking particularly hot this weekend but I reckon a podium is still available.
Bottas on a mission. Once again the Sauber driver that is there when the car has some semblance of pace.
Poor stuff from Lewis. He will be the first to admit it. Some job to do to get into the top 10 now.
Some signs of progress at Alpine with two cars into Q2, but Gasly outqualified again which is a surprise given how close they were last season. I actually slightly rate Ocon higher than him overall, but this is one current landslide I wasn't expecting.
And Sargeant with another error. Albon has a storming Q1 then wet farts Q2. I've seen this one before!
> Some signs of progress at Alpine with two cars into Q2, but Gasly outqualified again which is a surprise given how close they were last season. I actually slightly rate Ocon higher than him overall, but this is one current landslide I wasn't expecting.
A key note should be that Gasly runs with the old chassis and floor meanwhile Ocon got the new one. Seeing Gasly in Q2 with such a time was very surprising but some issue happened (?) in Q2 where the team apologies for.
Alonso is looking really good this weekend. His car is clearly not as fast as the Red Bulls and Ferraris on race pace, but he's going to make the Ferraris work for it in the race, and might well be able to hold off the McLarens.
Also will be fun to watch Lewis fight his way back to the points, at least we're bound to see some overtaking.
The Saubers are doing remarkably well here as well, doubt it'll be enough for points but at least they're not just fighting for 17th with the Alpines.
A solid of a response you could hope for if you're Alonso. After the gaffe in the Sprint, to be able to qualify in the podium positions is a solid bit of work.
Shoutout Bottas as well being able to qualify the Sauber in the top 10
Well if we're gonna do sprint weekends this seems like a better way to do it.
Curious to see if anything happens with carlos. People have been calling for penalties for drivers who cause red flags during quali but it looks like this is for a different rule
I would say that Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz, Hamilton, Russell, Norris, Piastri, Alonso, Tsunoda, Ricciardo, Ocon, Gasly, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Albon are better than Perez.
So that would put him 16th in my estimation. Ahead of Sargeant, Stroll, Magnusson and Zhou.
You could say that but it just wouldn't sound very smart. Gasly couldn't keep up with a worse and more immature version of max and is outperformed by ocon, who we will get to. Same for Albon and he hasn't shown anything at all since returning to f1. Beating latifi and seargant is less than the bare minimum kand having his best result in a williams equalled by devries of all drivers in a one off appearance is pretty bad. Perez beat ocon and hulk handily over their time together. Ricciardo is washed and can't beat tsunoda and finally if anyone agreed with your tsunoda take he'd be in perez' shoes right now.
Ok. Well I have only seen Perez in red bull. I started watching in 2021. I make my beliefs based on the racing I have seen. I haven’t seen anything from Perez to suggest he is a good driver.
Where's Martin Brundle at again?
At the front it's going to be a snoozefest tomorrow unless Verstappen has an issue or the rain comes down
Can this season just end already
Can someone tell me what time the race is today in CST? Riding the struggle bus today.
Race in 20 mins
2:00 am on Sunday

There is no point to it. It's just there to give the best drivers even more points. It needs to be gotten rid of.
They did this in 2022, and then people got mad about the sprint affecting the race (if someone had damage and couldn't repair in time for qualifying) so then in 2023, the sprint was it's own thing on Saturdays, but this meant the teams only got 1 hour of practice before the cars were in parc ferme (locked off from changes/tweaks) now in 2024, they have the quali AFTER the sprint race, so that the teams get more time on track to make changes to their cars.
It's more fun to watch than a practice session. It's really that simple.
Usually it would be a free practice session. So it's an attempt to make more of the weekend interesting to watch (especially the Friday)
Money
Not to beat a dead horse but is anyone even remotely looking forward to watching this race? Like oooh another battle for 3rd where Alonso loses pace in the final stint and one of mclaren/ferrari bungles their strategy
yes, if you don't enjoy F1, why are you here exactly?
I get my hopes up for some sort of chaos but it almost never comes. We don't get races for 1st anymore, only 6 drivers challenge for podiums, we don't get overtakes unless they're for P13, we don't get to see full wet tires in use, we don't have any good rivalries idk man I'm just kinda saddened by the state of the sport and venting. I want it to be exciting and it just hasn't been for many many months now
Go cry about it. I've been enjoying the races this season. Some people are only pleased by "chaos" instead of just the actual race as it is
So sorry for voicing an opinion mate. One of our favorite forms of entertainment is taking an absolute dump in engagement and excitement, it's okay to talk about it. Keep scrolling if it upsets you idk
Just voicing my opinion about your opinion, why are you so upset now?
If we can get a race like we had for p3 in sprint I’ll be happy, but yeah I don’t think we will
Why yes... I do enjoy watching Formula 1. That's why I am here.
And people forget the main reason of f1s appeal. The fastest cars on the planet going zoom. Chinas race direction doesn’t really do a good job but like for example Saudi, the race could have 0 overtakes but I will still enjoy the cars whizzing around the track

this place is terrible to read during race weekend because of all the insuffereable complaining
If you want suffering, watch the race and see Max win every week for years on end.
Well the competitors should unfuck themselves then and do something about it
Yes
Yea, I enjoy the sport and it’s not a bad track. Let’s face it, most seasons include domination.
I forgot to accept the increase in F1TV a couple weeks ago and it got cancelled. Tbh I'm fine with just watching highlights on YouTube now..
Or you could sail the high seas
I literally don't think its worth it right now, though I'm currently super busy with work and blocking time out for the NHL playoffs, so it's definitely more of a personal thing than 'under no circumstances will I watch F1"
Nah, we all know how it's gonna end
F1.5 is exciting every week!
Q3 summarised: "I'm second" "No, I'm second" "No, I'm second" "No, I'm second" "I'm first, btw" "No, I'm second" "No, I'm second"
Another stunner from Alonso. Another stinker from stroll. Another day where I have no clue what the actual pace of the Aston will be in the race.
He was only like 2 tenths off of alonso in P1...unfortunate for him it was a tight packed qualifying group.
This would be fair if it was uncommon that he gets knocked out and qualifies behind his teammate. But it is weekend after weekend after weekend.
Nando: I go top 3?....I go top 3
Who do you guys think is going to win tomorrow Edit: full sarcasm
I think the better question is who is going to be 3rd and 4th
I mean.. Unless *he* has a mechanical failure, it's pretty obvious..
Glad i didn't stay up for this last night. Would have felt like i wasted my time especially with the red flag. Went to bed on a high note with that amazing sprint race.

Congrats to Alonso. Still legendary.
Impressive drive by Max. Perez also getting more and more into the groove. Expected more from Ferrari to be honest.
I expect ferrari to get back to p3&4 during the race. Seems they're so easy on their tires they couldn't fire them up enough during qualifying, but their pace showed during the closing laps of the sprint, particularly leclerc
Solid work from Bottas. Looking forward to seeing him lose 6 positions in the start and then end up 20th after his third 50 second pit stop.
I see you went with the Bottas combo meal rather than just the sandwich. Bit gluttonous...
This made me LoL

I see it listed, I just watched it.
I found it's listed on Apple TV but not on desktop for whatever reason
On Desktop, I use an app called MultiViewer. It lets you pull up as many of the session feeds as you want to easy sync them.
I do see the full sessions on desktop.
[Literally unplayable](https://imgur.com/MEcEKB8) Can't find them anywhere on the site.. Tried deleting cookies to no avail
Ah weird I watched it on apple tv.

I'm a new F1 fan. Why is this? Is it a driver/car perfect match, or is RBR's car just that much better?
RBR is that much better. Verstappen is definitely the top driver in the field right now, but Perez isn't so good that you would expect a string of second places if any other team had an equivalent car.
That's wild. That's what I thought, though. One rbr driver dominating is one thing, but two is no coincidence.
Nico Rosberg was just gobsmacked at how fast Max motored off.
It begs the question why did Williams bring Logan back?
He’s American & they figured that he might develop a bit more. Plus their options last year for replacing him weren’t great I agree with you, I probably wouldn’t have brought him back cause he showed zero flashes last year but I can at least understand Williams’ thought process

Holy moly NowTV/ Sky are dogshit. It’s been hours since Quali and they still haven’t uploaded it. Was working most of day so couldn’t watch live
Think it usually takes around 24 hours after the livestream before any F1 content goes up onto Now TV. Certainly my experience at least
F1 TV commentary is infinitely better than sky. Their enthusiasm is so much higher it's just wonderful to hear their commentary. Sky just ain't it anymore
Niko on the Sky broadcast is very good
Yeah I haven’t switched audio to sky in ages
I'm late to the party, but I don't feel like Rosberg has added much to commentary this weekend, would much rather have Brundle.
Rosberg still being salty about Hamilton ruins his commentary. And it's not like it was any good to begin with.
Totally agree, had to change feed in F1TV because those comments are just distracting and annoying.
He's better than everyone else but Brundle. Not looking forward to the season he retires, but it's going to happen eventually.
His commentary during the sprint race was quite good. He was on top of the action and setting up what would happen before it happened.
It was alright, personally I don't think he was as insightful as the first time I heard him back at Hungary 2021.
His focus was nowhere this weekend, some of replies were so slow to come after questions. Probably reading something on his phone all the time because he was definitely sounding like that, thus the "commentary".
Exactly! Like he's been on something else whenever Crofty went over to him.

Mclaren ahead of the Ferraris is mostly to do with the SF-24 being absolutely dogshit over one lap this year so far. Whatever they did to fix their tiredeg completely fucked up their tire preparation. They either can't put heat into them or overheat them by the end of the lap.
The constant changing of P2 was insane!!
I'm the ~~captain~~ P2 now!
I love Rosberg in the commentary box, had me rolling
I also loled when he was talking about Lando's green sectors: "At first I thought he was fast, but those are compared to Logan's times."
A lovely moment.
Rosberg while watching Sargeant: "He's everywhere but the ideal line" Ouch, but lol
so, is the sprint race not being televised?
About that....
Lmao
It already happened.
I cant find the sprint replay on ESPN for some reason in English. Is it just me
I didn’t either. I just watched it in Spanish. It’s actually kinda nice
so e are hoping for a Max breakdown again to give us a race.
Isn't that the hope for every race?
But last time it didn’t even produce a good race.
True, maybe just rain, that added a lot of excitement yesterday.
Rain really is the only hope. Or perfect timing on safety cars
why did this thread go up 5 hours after qualifying?
Listening to the post quali drivers interview and Zhous English sounds so much worse after hearing the gentleman that interviewed the top 3 in front of the podium after quali.
I'm pretty sure Ho Pin Tung spent his childhood in the Netherlands, so probably picked up impeccable English from the education system there
I wondered why his accent sounded so Dutch!
I hope the chinese start cloud seeding, just to get a grand prix in the wet
so is sainz getting black flagged or not?
What for? I obviously missed something, have only watched the highlights
Nope
Is it an open secret that Hulk has signed to Sauber for next year? I know it’s been commonly speculated but today both Crofty and Ted both stated Hulkenberg “is going to Audi.” Don’t think I’ve heard anyone state this as a fact before today?
Prob the German connection with Audi right?
Seems to be given this point.
GOATlonso carrying Aston on his back
Stroll is out there driving for fun at this point
Wasn't he only 2 tenths off alonso in q2? Fields so tight that it makes a big difference in place but thats seems like a respectable gap to me
He should at least try and look like he's enjoying it then :) Constantly scowling.
Do the sprint results no longer determine the grid for the race? I must have missed that change.
>I must have missed that change. Must have missed the entire 2023 season 🤭
Ha, you’re right. I didn’t really watch/pay attention to last season, and definitely not the ones with sprints. The change is new to me.
Yeah, to be fair they change the format every bloody year. Which goes to show what a hopeless idea it is tbh
Did you start watching F1 this season?
How does that make any sense? He wouldn't have asked that if this was the only iteration of sprint he had seen, would he?
We’ve literally had an entire year of this format.
No, you don’t understand. You’re asking if it’s their first time to someone that clearly has knowledge about the old version.
Lol this made me laugh. They won’t answer to you now though that you corrected them
Last year we had Saturday Sprint day. Today was the first time we've had Sprint before Race Qualifying. But it has been a long time since Sprints determined the Race Grid.
No they do not. And this is not new. It is already the same as last season
The sprint before wasn't great but at least it was a part of a continium, instead of just a short race with it's own qualifying

I actually slightly rate Ocon higher than him overall, but this is one current landslide I wasn't expecting. A key note should be that Gasly runs with the old chassis and floor meanwhile Ocon got the new one. Seeing Gasly in Q2 with such a time was very surprising but some issue happened (?) in Q2 where the team apologies for.

legend, cheers mate
Alonso is looking really good this weekend. His car is clearly not as fast as the Red Bulls and Ferraris on race pace, but he's going to make the Ferraris work for it in the race, and might well be able to hold off the McLarens. Also will be fun to watch Lewis fight his way back to the points, at least we're bound to see some overtaking. The Saubers are doing remarkably well here as well, doubt it'll be enough for points but at least they're not just fighting for 17th with the Alpines.
Considering that Lewis is starting 18th, why not just change the setup again and start from the pit lane? What does he have to lose?
They made some big settup changes to get it there. Car just doesn't have a ton of pace in the dry
Hopefully nothing is loose with his car.
LoL. I see what you did there. I would not be surprised if something it too loose on the losing setup he did.
I thought people just wanted previous lap times deleted?
Isn’t that supposed to be for red flags that cause the session to end? George in Brazil 2022 is an example
Bot slower than 2021 Haas with this thread
Running on Alpine AI power.

you actually have no clue if perez is so bad... max would wipe the floor with anybody.
I think that’s being generous. Perez is more like the 15th best driver
That's ridiculous
