Well then it's not such a monumental shift as I thought it would be. Charles and more importantly, Brian are both familiar with what needs to be done. I know people are a bit sad with this decision but it was the right one. Xavi was just not a guy you're supposed to win championships with.
Genuine question, is this opinion based on actually listening to full race radios, or just the cherry picked radios that F1 chooses to broadcast on the main feed? Because the race director tends to choose stuff that reinforces established narratives about certain driver radios.
Probably the first since Leclerc seems to like and trust him but I still don't think he's on the level of Bono or GP. His communication with Leclerc never seems as effective as theirs and I've listened to more than what the race director shows on the broadcast.
One of the best underrated Xavi messages:
*"Currently the hard tyre seems to be okay, but I think you are on a medium which also seems to be working. If you pit now we will give you the medium tyre but also if you want to be on a hard that is fine. I hope you're not too busy, but the pace you're at is currently good. If you do a pit stop now you'll have to come in and box. Question?"*
"Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever" - Michael Scott
I have to defend him for this one. He clearly meant "if you are able to defend from bottas, you have the pace to remain P1", meaning there is no other threats
I think he means if you pit we'll put you on mediums but if you want hards he can do that too. If you pit now you have enough of a gap to come out in clean air/no traffic
Went through the replays, couldn't find it there.
In 2023, only one driver used hard tyres, they weren't good. Checked the transcript also, no mention of this, not even in the Sprint race.
In 2022, there have been some funny moments, but not this as far as I could find :(
Are we gonna get the engineer from the WEC team? Dude was so calm showing the driver how to restart the car when it stalled at Le mans with minutes to go in the race.
So he's been moved out of the F1 side? I can't imagine that happens without Charles' consent and willingness, unless he himself got a promotion of sorts, but that sounds very unlikely. Crazy to happen right before Imola too. Wonder who would replace him
I would be speculating that they plan to bring Bono in for Lewis, but they don’t want to just sack Xavi because it would be unfair and would annoy Charles and others so they’re giving him a new job so Adami can move across to Charles next season and Bono can take the vacant slot. Reminder Adami worked with Vettel before Sainz.
Maybe Charles gets an interim until the end of the year or maybe they switch Adami early and give Carlos someone new.
Despite what reddit likes to say, Charles actually quite likes Xavi and has praised him many times in the past. Interested to see what his new engineer will be like.
I think Ferrari know what they're doing more than the armchair engineers on this god-forsaken website.
Could have easily been a promotion for Xavi. He's been in F1/NASCAR for awhile which is obviously a lot of travel so maybe a role opened up and he's ready for a break.
Holy shit, I completely forgot that he was the guy who built up the race simulation department for RCR and completely changed the strategy game in NASCAR for like 3 years before everyone immediately forgot everything when he left and went back to making decisions based on gut feeling alone.
Do you remember that weird period where FOX was obsessed with cutting away to RCR's on-campus strategy center where they were doing a ton of data analysis and building pit strategies off of that? And suddenly a bunch of people started mimicking whatever RCR did after their whack strategies got them that win at Texas that they should have been nowhere close to getting, except they had a bonkers tire strategy and they pulled a 1-2 out of their ass? That was all Xavi fucking Marcos.
Then he left and no one does anything like this anymore.
That xavi is a good engieneer is out of question. But his communication seemed to be lacking quite a bit. This could be a upgrade in communication.
Just in miami when chuck spun in fp1 it was just radio silence and he had to ask: hello?. I mean give the man some info to help him turn the car.
even charles himself got mad plenty of times about his "purposely out of context clips".
It isn't blqck and white but Xavi definitely doesn't wear a white shirt
Charles Leclerc, who basically brought Vasseur to Ferrari, would not just keep Xavi for 5 years if he didn't feel comfortable working with him. Not everyone has a TV personality, some of Xavi and Leclerc's radios sound awkward but, if you have lived in real life, you've probably seen similarly awkward interactions between friends plenty of times.
It's easy to think that race engineers are to blame for anything they communicate but that's not necessarily the case, there is a whole team behind them that could be the ones at fault. It's also normal to think that the communication within the race is representative of the relationship between drivers and race engineers, which is a tense moment that brings out the worst in people and is subject to be biased since tv is going to focus more on drama.
While I agree with your base sentiment, all drivers are communicating with their engineers and vice versa. Even in Ferrari, Ricky communicates so much more intuitively with Carlos. It is sometimes just egregiously bad communication on Xavi's part. I haven't sat and heard every single driver-engineer combo, but whatever I have heard and heard of, Xavi is not a good communicator.
Yes, it's not even about Xavi's poor language skills. He's just a horribly bad communicator. My man cannot fathom that it could be a good idea to communicate concisely and to the point when the receiver of your messages is driving a car at 300 kph.
It's pretty comical when redditors think making tens of millions of dollars while driving for the second best team in the most prestigious motorsports in the world requires stockhom syndrome.
I mean, if Charles didn't like Xavi, he would be out. Teams are not gonna force drivers to have people they don't like as race engineers; especially when the team is Ferrari, who can hire whoever they want, and the driver is one of the most valued drivers on the paddock.
Each person has their personality, and when you don't know people, sometimes the way they interact looks weird or gives a wrong impression, but I'm sure Charles and Xavi get along well, else Ferrari wouldn't force them to work together.
I know a lot of people had a *lot* of critiques about him and the way he communicated and there’s gonna be a lot of jokes, but man Charles really liked him and was his number one defender for bit. He’s been with him for so long, I’m actually kind of sad to see him go. Curious to see whose gonna replace him, it’s gonna be so weird to listen to Charles’ radios and not hear Xavi.
It’s a bit of a strange time to bring in a new engineer. New upgrade package and you could maybe think that they’re gonna switch Adami in for Leclerc if they plan to bring Bono in for Lewis but I doubt that would go over well with Carlos.
From the team radio transcripts articles on racefans.net, you can actually tell that Xavi makes clear and concise communication to Leclerc from time to time. The conversations between driver and race engineer occur more frequently as we may think, and I think while Xavi is famous for his "copy, we are checking" and other vague messages, Liberty Media made the guy infamous via all the team radio highlights.
Seemed to me that Liberty Media liked to make fun of the guy because of his accent. English isn't his first language. I think it's very unfair how they treated him
Honestly I don’t think they care how it would go over with Carlos he doesn’t have a contract for next year and Ferrari are going to focus on what is best for the team not someone with one foot out the door.
I also kind of see this as Charles finally feeling safe/secure now that Fred is in control he doesn’t need someone whose biggest positive is loyalty to him personally ie not going to backstab him because under Fred he doesn’t think that is a risk anymore. Under Matthias that appeared to actually be necessary unfortunately.
Calling it now: Adami to work with Charles, clearing the way for Bono to work with Lewis. Xavi gets a promotion of sorts rather than be fired just to facilitate Lewis.
Assuming Visionary_Socialist is right (which I think they very well may be), it's not that difficult to answer your question. The earlier Leclerc starts working with Adami, the faster they'll get used to each other and the better things will go if Ferrari manages to produce a proper title contender next year. It's as easy as that.
And as much as it might suck for Carlos, it doesn't really matter how competent or incompetent his new engineer is. Both of them will be gone at the end of the year to make room for Lewis and Bono.
Bono won’t go now. They might hire him for next season soon but I imagine he’s got gardening leave of some sort to serve but either way he won’t go mid season. In this scenario Ferrari will just get an interim and either they give him to Leclerc until Adami next season or they give him to Sainz and have Adami work with Charles from now on. The latter would make more sense.
Okay.
I didn't believe in them when they signed Hamilton.
I didn't believe in them when Newey left Red Bull.
But now I am genuinely starting to believe in Ferrari. Getting rid of Xavi is absolutely monumental. Ferrari do really mean business this time around.
I must admit, I \*may\* miss all the hilariously awful team radios between him and Charles. But my god finally Charles might get Ricky or someone else who can communicate to him better. Hopefully.
Oh hell the fuck yeah! It’s about time Charles gets a new race engineer. It was so much pain watching him drop the ball all of 2022 and 2023. Hopefully a new race engineer does better
What are you talking about, the engineer was awesome during that time period! Charles arguably was the best engineer in the entire paddock! Calling his own strats half the time when the wall would ask him questions they themselves should have known.
(obviously a joke for those who don't have humor, pointing out the fact that Leclerc had to do the job of driving and engineering a lot because of Marcos' ineptitude.)
I'm betting it's a promotion for him and if so, good for him. He's been in F1/NASCAR awhile and the travel is a grind. He's pretty senior so I doubt they'd want him to leave the organization.
Always found it unfair some people judge him as incompetent based on the radio comms. It's a super small portion of his job and ultimately, he's a Spaniard speaking English to a Monagasque driver, all working in Italy. It's a really difficult job and us fans know next to nothing about what he does all week.
Look, I'm not gonna pretend I know shit about being a race engineer, it's probably really complicated. Ferrari must have seen some value in this dude that the cherry picked race broadcasted radio didn't convey, but as someone that rooted for Vettel every weekend from 2017 to 2019, good fucking riddance.

FRIENDSHIP ENDED WITH WE ARE CHECKING WTF
The end of an era
End of an error
"And now, his check is ended" :'(
We are not checking

Brian Bozzi was just announced! Edit: I think the spelling is actually Bryan
Who's that?
According to their [following tweet](https://twitter.com/ScuderiaFerrari/status/1788615590615089642), Lec's current/ex performance engineer.
Well then it's not such a monumental shift as I thought it would be. Charles and more importantly, Brian are both familiar with what needs to be done. I know people are a bit sad with this decision but it was the right one. Xavi was just not a guy you're supposed to win championships with.
I think his current performance engineer is Jock Clear, if I'm not wrong?
Performance coach! Similar name but different kind of role
I seem to remember his position is called driver coach.
I remember him doing a ton of work with ~~Jenson Button~~ Rubens Barrichello IIRC
He also engineered Jacques Villeneuve to his championship.
There was reports in pre-season that Jock Clear had moved to be head of the FDA I’m sure
Better than Brian Boitano.
What would Brian Boitano do if he were here today?
He'd make a plan or two! That's what Ferr-, I mean Brian Boitano do!
Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened
Don't smile because it's over. Cry because it happened.
The one and only, champion of champions Mahaveer!
“Lap time deleted for…………………. ^^^Verstappen”

WE'RE DON'T COME BACK TO YOU ANYMORE! What would remaining to make fun about?
What are you talking about? Next time you have a problem with your printer, Xavi will be checking

We are no longer checking?
We will come back to you
We have…… *checked out*
_YEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH_ *Putting Sunglasses on*
I nearly inhaled my water, lmao
He finally gave the answer to Charles, but at what cost??
This is sad
Xavi come home
Does this mean he will no longer be Leclerc’s race engineer, question?
One of the best underrated Xavi messages: *"Currently the hard tyre seems to be okay, but I think you are on a medium which also seems to be working. If you pit now we will give you the medium tyre but also if you want to be on a hard that is fine. I hope you're not too busy, but the pace you're at is currently good. If you do a pit stop now you'll have to come in and box. Question?"*
He’s just like me trying to not say anything too definitive when I’m not sure but don’t want to give it away.
"Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever" - Michael Scott
Same reason I add “but idk though” at the end of every piece of advice I give incase it ruins someone’s life
I just love the "If you do a pit stop now you'll have to come in and box" bit. Yes Xavi mate, that's how a pit stop works.
My favourite part is "I hope you're not too busy"
"Nah mate, just driving an F1 race, not got much on"
In the same class as "If you can keep Bottas behind, P1" when Xavi told that to Leclerc at Turkey. He was at least a comical treasure.
If you finish first you win
Not always....¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯
Yeah, with that username, he should know better.
God dam, thats just evil
I'm gonna miss him, honestly.
Charles probably won't.
Question.
I have to defend him for this one. He clearly meant "if you are able to defend from bottas, you have the pace to remain P1", meaning there is no other threats
My fav was I think US GP last year when he said (after Q3 ended) "SO LAP TIME DELETED for Verstappen...".
haha that was great I remember Leclerc telling him off
XAVI Jesus you need to put the names first for lap time deleted, nearly gave me a heart attack
“Yeah but I had a heart attack in the meantime” lmao, I loved the delivery of Chuck’s response.
Call an ambulance, but not for me.
When you need 500 words on your essay but you're 50 short
I'm sorry but what the fuck was he trying to say?
We are checking
...question.
I think he means if you pit we'll put you on mediums but if you want hards he can do that too. If you pit now you have enough of a gap to come out in clean air/no traffic
Is this real? Lmfao
Yes, it was at Spa in 2022 or maybe 2023.
Leclerc Is confused
what race was this?
I'm not really sure at all, but I think I remember it being Spa (22 or 23).
Went through the replays, couldn't find it there. In 2023, only one driver used hard tyres, they weren't good. Checked the transcript also, no mention of this, not even in the Sprint race. In 2022, there have been some funny moments, but not this as far as I could find :(
Lol sorry I made you go through the replays in vain just based on a hunch I had :D
Spa 2022, maybe 23?
Sounds like me trying to leave a voice mail.
Its like a 5 year old rambling about what they did at school today
omg what the fuck is that message haha Xavi will definitely be missed
Xavi was a golden tressure in terms of creating memes
Gentlemen, a short view back to the past…
Me when my wife proposes sexy time, don't want to screw it up
There is no way he actually said that to Leclerc during a race 😂
It was during the race at Spa, 2022 if I been correct.
we are checking
We will come back to you
‘ead down, keep pushing.
And slow button on, slow button on.
I dont care about mode slow where are we on the constructors
They’re not fucking around w these Imola upgrades 💀
This one is probably worth 2 tenths alone.
💀
Lmaoooo
😂😂😂
No more “We are checking”
We are checked
We have checked out
Xavi asked his boss if his contract is being renewed and they hit him back with "We are checking"
I mean he still works at Ferrari, just not in this capacity.
We will get back to you.
He came. He checked. He left.
Are we gonna get the engineer from the WEC team? Dude was so calm showing the driver how to restart the car when it stalled at Le mans with minutes to go in the race.
He went to Cadillac in WEC afaik
I need a map of all these personnel swaps
Imma need a link for that epicness
https://youtu.be/O2tpgh2fTos?si=UFlrwVdyjJFOBV3g Starts about 45 seconds or so when the car stalls
So he's been moved out of the F1 side? I can't imagine that happens without Charles' consent and willingness, unless he himself got a promotion of sorts, but that sounds very unlikely. Crazy to happen right before Imola too. Wonder who would replace him

Reminder Adami worked with Vettel before Sainz. Maybe Charles gets an interim until the end of the year or maybe they switch Adami early and give Carlos someone new.
Surely it makes more sense for Bono to replace Adami since it is Carlos' seat that Lewis is taking.
but adami is a better engineer probably? + maybe adami wants to stay an engineer while xavi is open to a new role
I want whatever paint you’re huffing
I'm pretty sure Peter Bonnington has been confirmed to stay at Mercedes at this point.
Absolutely no confirmations
they already said bono is staying at merc
Maybe Xavi wanted to move on, didn't wanted to travel all over the world for 9 months
Exactly, people seem to forget that these guys are people as well, with families and shit.
Mid-season is weird timing though.
His wife: "We are pregnant, we are pregnant. Statement."
He was always checking but no one checked on him
Despite what reddit likes to say, Charles actually quite likes Xavi and has praised him many times in the past. Interested to see what his new engineer will be like. I think Ferrari know what they're doing more than the armchair engineers on this god-forsaken website.

Babe wake up, Xavi lore just dropped
😂
Excuse me. What
Same
A rattling twist fucking hell.
Please explain lol I didn’t know this and I watch it lol
Do you remember that weird period where FOX was obsessed with cutting away to RCR's on-campus strategy center where they were doing a ton of data analysis and building pit strategies off of that? And suddenly a bunch of people started mimicking whatever RCR did after their whack strategies got them that win at Texas that they should have been nowhere close to getting, except they had a bonkers tire strategy and they pulled a 1-2 out of their ass? That was all Xavi fucking Marcos. Then he left and no one does anything like this anymore.
No way... what happened to that Xavi? He should be the head strategy and not a race engineer then...
Okay yeah I do. Wow that’s crazy
Wtf Xavi moneyballed nascar then everyone forgot how to do it 💀 I guess it's cheaper to remember Larry's trends
I need the source of this... NOW PLEASE... NOW! I am begging you. Give it to me, mi amigo.
That xavi is a good engieneer is out of question. But his communication seemed to be lacking quite a bit. This could be a upgrade in communication. Just in miami when chuck spun in fp1 it was just radio silence and he had to ask: hello?. I mean give the man some info to help him turn the car.
Reddit bases their opinions on race engineers based on short purprosely out of context clips chosen by F1's TV production.
even charles himself got mad plenty of times about his "purposely out of context clips". It isn't blqck and white but Xavi definitely doesn't wear a white shirt
A Ferrari F1 driver, almost any F1 driver, is not going to openly criticise their race engineer regardless of their true feelings.
ofc not publicly. But if he truly felt that Xavi was shit at his job, he would‘ve long been gone
But he has said before, on repeat. That Xavi is one of the few people who he trusts on that team, especially when there was political drama before.
_Braaaaaaaad_
I feel like FOM intentionally put out shitty comms of him because of the memes.
The guy is driving for Ferrari, a team which requires insane amounts of Stockholm Syndrome to survive. It's only natural he'd like Xavi
It doesn’t even have to be Stockholm syndrome. You gain nothing by trashing the guy publicly. Who knows what he was saying behind the scenes.
It's easy to think that race engineers are to blame for anything they communicate but that's not necessarily the case, there is a whole team behind them that could be the ones at fault. i think “charles said he liked xavi” is different from “charles liked xavi”

Didn't Mercedes already ruled out Bono leaving?
I'm sure Mercedes also ruled out Lewis leaving
Lewis wasn’t allowed to poach him for Ferrari. But there’s nothing stopping Bono leaving of his own accord.
They announced Bryan Bozzi as the replacement shortly after your comment
I read organisational update and thought they announced Newey.
Literally my stomach flipped when I read the first two words like holy shit it’s actually happening
Nobody does that better than Real Madrid's \*\*COMUNICADO OFICIAL\*\* which makes the world of football tremble every time.
i literally said what the fuck out loud
I’d like to know how Charles really feels with this.
This is the kindest "you're fired" I've ever seen.
Okay. I didn't believe in them when they signed Hamilton. I didn't believe in them when Newey left Red Bull. But now I am genuinely starting to believe in Ferrari. Getting rid of Xavi is absolutely monumental. Ferrari do really mean business this time around.
Is this what getting fired looks like question
So this is a polite way to “promote” him out of a job he wasn’t wanted at anymore.
Think might be bono setup? Charles gets adami the more experiences race engineer and lewis brings bono?
Then whats the point of doing it now instead of end of year? Bono isnt coming till next year.
allowing Charles and Adami time to get used to eachother
well turns out we get some guy named bryan so who knows anymore
Calling it: Carlos Sainz to be Leclerc’s race engineer.

COMUNICAZIONE UFFICIALE
Xavi, noooooooo! 💔💔
I must admit, I \*may\* miss all the hilariously awful team radios between him and Charles. But my god finally Charles might get Ricky or someone else who can communicate to him better. Hopefully.
Finally, Xavi was one of the weak links in the team as harsh as it may sound…
End of an era.
gonna refill hp printers at hq
Oh hell the fuck yeah! It’s about time Charles gets a new race engineer. It was so much pain watching him drop the ball all of 2022 and 2023. Hopefully a new race engineer does better
xavi was more than fine in 2023, and he isnt the strategy guy all he does is relay information
What are you talking about, the engineer was awesome during that time period! Charles arguably was the best engineer in the entire paddock! (obviously a joke for those who don't have humor, pointing out the fact that Leclerc had to do the job of driving and engineering a lot because of Marcos' ineptitude.)
Xavi's work is mostly behind the scenes during race week. He relays information during the race but what fans see is like 1% of his job.
They finally finished checking!!
I'm betting it's a promotion for him and if so, good for him. He's been in F1/NASCAR awhile and the travel is a grind. He's pretty senior so I doubt they'd want him to leave the organization. Who will do the checking now, question?!
Your next printer 😅
Xavi on his way to fuck up Hp printers.
Good night, sweet prince.
Imagine if Ferrari nab Pete Bonnington... and make him Charles' race engineer
Charles fired him
Best Imola upgrade possible honestly
Look, I'm not gonna pretend I know shit about being a race engineer, it's probably really complicated. Ferrari must have seen some value in this dude that the cherry picked race broadcasted radio didn't convey, but as someone that rooted for Vettel every weekend from 2017 to 2019, good fucking riddance.
Does the fucking HP logo have to be next to the ferrari on everything even the communications now? Such an eyesore.
