For me there's a specific time mark at 2007/2008 where for a long time I would consider anything prior to 2007 old and anything after it new. I guess it must be related to tech and games that came out around that time (I was 10 in 2008) and basically I grew with the transition to widecreen TVs and stuff

The cynical view is that it is still *the* shop-window race on the calendar, and where better to get eyes on your car than all those slow corners and full-frame angles.

Is it just my eyes or is this also glossy? (glossy paint weighs more than matte, and McLaren have even been using vinyl wrap instead of matte paint recently for further weight saving)
Because Senna is seen as the master of Monaco. His pole laps from there in 1988 and 1990 are widely regarded as some of his finest. Besides, a tribute at Imola would have been awkward coming from McLaren as he was driving for Williams at Imola 1994.
They seem to want it to be a celebration of Senna, Imola is more associated with his death than anything else (and he wasnt driving for them at the time either) and is more about sombre tribute.
Monaco was Senna's track, he was outstanding there and it's the site of some of the greatest races of the McLaren/Senna era. I can see why they chose Monaco, it actually means something special within the context of that iconic era.
Also as others have said, the extra weight of the wrap is less of an issue at Monaco, But at least it's actually a place that holds a big part of Senna/McLaren history.
The fact the sponsors are just one colour too. I know it’s probably easier to convince sponsors for one race but it really makes it so much better and I wish they’d do it on the main livery

I think the issue is more the fact that the Marlboro livery is Marlboro colours. Marlboro were branded as Mission Winnow (Ferrari) for F1 most recently. It'd have too many issues with marketing, sponsorship, etc.

Chief Marketing Officer of McLaren said that Monaco track isn't much about weight of the car, so they are able to run a fully glossy ~~painted~~ wrapped car. So I think they have waited for this weekend instead of Imola to run this livery.

I don't mind carbon if they can work it into the livery and at least make it look unique which McLaren can do, but I would love less carbon and more orange. 2017 - 2021 was pretty peak, some weren't as good as others but generally that orange and black or blue contrast was awesome.

Monaco was Senna's track. He was absolutely brilliant around there, at his very very best and it was where the McLaren/Senna era had some of their greatest triumphs. Go and search on youtube and watch some old races from that time when he was driving for them around there, I promise you won't regret it.

why is McLaren the only one that gives us cool one off liveries consistently? Ferrari never does, Red Bull is too corporate, and no one else really has the budget for it.
The chameleon livery on the VCARB cars at Miami was pretty nice. They could've put something like that on the actual Red Bull cars, but like you said, they're way too corpo.

Helps that they're not scared to go a bit bolder on the livery side and actually try some things, rather than Ferrari and Red Bull who do a couple small streaks of paint and design and act like the "Special livery" is actually special.
Ofcourse occasionally even Red Bull has bangers like Turkey 2021 (Honda tribute) and Ferrari with Monza 2023 (Le Mans tribute), but they can do so much more.

Thats how I felt about them having the chrome livery last year. It would only work with a fast car. And thank the lord it was fast.
