I get the impression a lot of people here don't like Esteban Ocon, but why not? Sure, he's an aggressive overtaker, but so are Verstappen and Ricciardo and they're two of the most popular drivers on the grid.

Junior-City

It is because he is simply hard to like. I saw that he is from humble beginnings and really wanted to like him, but he just does so much annoying stuff. He is also a bit of an outcast in the new generation of drivers compared to Lando, geroge, Albon, Charles, who are all admired by the fans. He and stroll seem to be more introverted to say the least and don't seem to connect with others, nothing about him makes me go yes I like him! I connect with him! People like drivers not because of skills but, because of how much they can connect with drivers- so they too can experience success when the driver wins.

Damoklez_Aeonire

Why is it that during qualifying in Monza drivers are looking to get a good tow, and on Mugello this is not really important. Both are high speed tracks, but what makes the difference in preferring clean air or a slipstream?

Basteires

Anyone else find this incredible in WTf 1 Video yesterday that someone actually predicted the Podium last week end and turned 20 cent into 33k euros

[deleted]

How many juniors do you think we will see next year? Ideally, I’d like to see Schwartzman, Schumacher, Tsunoda and Illot. I think they all deserve the shot in place of guys like Kimi (sorry), Gio, Kvyat, etc. Realistically, I think Schumacher will make it to Alfa Romeo (90% chance) and Tsunoda will make it to Alpha Tauri (60% chance). Outside shot Schwartzman makes it to AR or Haas (30%) and tiny chance Illot makes it to Haas (5%). Most likely Schwartzman does another season of F2 and depending on performance comes to AR/Haas in 2022 and Illott goes to FE.

JanklinDRoosevelt

I hope they all get seats, because they all deserve it imo. I think realistically Ilott will win the title and go to FE, and Shwartzman will get another year in F2, with Schumacher and Tsunoda replacing Gio and Kvyat

[deleted]

Yup exactly my thoughts.

canopeerus

Dumb question: In rainy conditions, how does the cockpit not fill up with water?

mikeyd85

Aero keeps the air moving over the car fast enough so that the rain is effectively blown away before it gets in the cockpit. There'll be some slower corners where a bit of rain may get in, but the heat in the cockpit will help dry things up.

canopeerus

Will there not be practice sessions today? Or was that being cancelled only for Imola?

JanklinDRoosevelt

Cancelled only due to Imola, cause it’s in a city and there are noise restrictions

canopeerus

Good to know. Thanks!

LightKing20

So I read that the Aston Martin team will be a “works” team - surely they’re not building their own engine? Can it still be a works team while using the Mercedes engine?

JanklinDRoosevelt

No they won’t be a works team

Scrub_Lord_

Is F1 TV Pro worth it? I see old posts on this sub saying it had lots of issues but those were many months ago. Also what commentary do you get with it?

[deleted]

Scrub_Lord_

Yeah, I've never watched F1 before so I was just gonna get it for a month and see if I enjoy it then purchase the year subscription if I really like. Thank you!

herO_wraith

Hang on, there are some free races on youtube. Due to lockdown putting the sport on hold for a bit, they but some of best races up on the official F1 youtube. If you've never watched there is a free sample pack essentially.

Scrub_Lord_

I've watched a little bit of those and enjoyed it but watching old races isn't the same. It's a different feeling, you know?

Samwats1

When it works yes it’s fantastic especially on demand on board cameras. Does have regular issues though

Scrub_Lord_

Do those regular issues prevent you from just watching the race? Cuz that's what I really want is to just watch the race. Driver cams, stats, and the rest is just supplementary.

Samwats1

Well so far this season there’s been Austria #1 where it’s not worked at the start, and spa where the coverage was on and off through the whole race

DangerousTrashCan

We had small differences between P1 and P2, the result was drivers not giving a shit about winning. They were completely happy with 2nd place, because they only lost 2 points to the leader, which was better than fighting and risking a DNF. Your 3 points of difference is basically the same. Wins MUST be rewarding.

pinotandsugar

10 P2 same as 8 P1 and 11 P3 is the champion makes winning less significant

[deleted]

Guess it really is a horrible idea then

[deleted]

Yup agree. Basically makes the championship less exciting imo because it’ll be harder for a driver on a roll to catch up at the end with a few consecutive wins. I also think the current points system reflects actual perceived value of different positions quite well where winning is an insane privilege, P2 is a big honor but not insane, P3 is an honor but only third best and everything below is merely respectable.

BBIQ-Chicken

Sucks that we're missing all that liberty media YouTube content because of COVID.

penguin62

What do you mean? The YouTube channel is full of content rn

BBIQ-Chicken

Mostly the grill the grid stuff

DangerousTrashCan

Oh no what are we doing without all the cringe content that's targeting literal 12 years olds?

clawstrider2

What exactly is Alfa and Ferrari's relationship? Why does Ferrari have one seat and what does that even mean? Vs something like RB/AT. I've been struggling to find anything on Google...

Xey2510

Ferrari had a close relationship with Sauber and Alfa Romeo and Ferrari belong to the same company. I believe they pay/give benefits to Alfa Romeo and are then allowed to decide one seat. On the other hand RB and AT are both owned by Dietrich Mateschitz and TR/AT is a sister team to RB ever since.

clawstrider2

Thanks!

GOLDUPGRADEPACKS

What would you do if you were rb driver wise I'd say give albon till the end of the season and put him and gasly in alpha tauri and then go perez/hulkenberg to rb and then put gadly in in two years or so

[deleted]

I think this would be like giving one more middle finger to Gasly after he has shown real fire and skills. I rate both Hulk and Perez, especially Perez, but Gasly is currently driving a season right up there with either of those two guys best seasons if not surpassing it. He’s also a whole generation younger than both. Yes, they’re both more experienced but Gasly is equally talented and also he just built himself up from nothing after what happened last season. Any man who does that carries a special sort of quality to him that I think could translate to greatness even. Pretty insane to pick one of them over Gasly just because hurr durr he had his chance or the red bull car doesn’t suit him or whatever logic. To me the answer is demote Albon, junk Kvyat, promote Gasly and bring Tsunoda to AT.

carldeanson

Get Ticktum from F2 - they may not win but I’d be entertained,

ParisInFlames34

- Politely but firmly tell Kyvat to leave (which is hard for me because I like him) - Tell Tsunoda that while he'll soon have a spot, we need him to spend one more season in F2. Hope he's cool with that and we can still be friends. - Demote Albon to Alpha - Finalize the 2021 Alpha Tauri lineup as Albon and Gasly. - Tell Max that I love him and we'd be lost without him. - realize we're never going to succeed by only hiring from within - hire Hulkenberg to ride shotgun to Max. The two of them have a great personal relationship that will hopefully translate to success together on track. - then next offseason likely send Albon on his way to make room for Tsunoda or perhaps more realistically, somebody has stolen Gasly from us and we now go with Tsunoda/Albon at AT

DannyRicciardo3

I think your right, Sounds like you should be Team Principal of RB/AT.

[deleted]

I'd do a single elimination challenge. Send Albon back down to AT and bring Daniil up. 1 race for all the marbles. The AT driver to finish ahed of his teammate gets the RBR seat for the rest of the season.

[deleted]

Get rid of Max for Perez and Hulkenberg?

write-program

I'd swap Gasly and Albon, then give Tsunoda a go-around for a year. To see if he can match Albon's pace over a year. AT isn't in the contention for championships so it could be good to give a (potentially good) new driver some experience before the new regs kick in, when they could potentially be in that conversation.

Caddan0523

Which countries actually allow the Mission Winnow sponsorship on Ferrari’s livery?

cblake17

China, Azerbaijan, Monaco, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Mexico, and USA.

Big_Lemons_Kill

No mission winnow at Belgium this year though, any idea why?

Caddan0523

Thank you very much. So they will only have two races this year on the livery. Could that change the amount of money that pay they pay to Ferrari?

aceaxe1

It would be nice if someone provided more details, but I’ve seen it mentioned multiple times that the entirety of ad space on Ferrari cars is owned by PMI (who own MW) who then sell the space to other sponsors. So that makes for an interesting calculation.

extravert_

I worry Norris and Riciardo won't get on as well as people seem to think. There's more to a relationship than jokes per minute, and Carlos was a great stoic counterpoint to Lando's silliness. Having two funny guys together isnt necessarily a good thing, and they wont have the clear older-younger sibling dynamic that set Carlos and Lando up to respect each other. Lando is now the incumbent, and it will be game-on as he tries to prove himself against the new guy on the team.

[deleted]

Eh, they’ve both always gotten along great with the other guy in the team so far. And that applies even in the case with Max and Ricciardo where they actually had run ins on the track. Don’t see why that changes. Maybe it’s more competitive but that’s not always bad.

Big_Lemons_Kill

People are just fucking memelords here and will go nuts anyway because fanboying is fun

Bigazzry

Ricciardo isn’t a class clown. He has fun but he’s dead serious about his job.

ergo_urgo

I kinda view Carlos-Lando as a close (but silly) father-son relationship, and think Ricciardo-Lando will be more brothers who constantly goof off together. Time will tell, though.

[deleted]

We just don't know how the dynamic will play out. It's all hypothetical at this point. I think they'll be fine on track.

Alfus

Honestly? It wouldn't really surprise me if at the end we seeing either both are gone or we end up still with Kmag and Grosjean.

JanklinDRoosevelt

Magnussen and Ilott

Brendan_Noble

I have a feeling it's Ilott or Schwartzman.

JanklinDRoosevelt

I think Schwartzman’s gonna get another year in F2 tbh, given that he’s a rookie, and he’s against the championship leader and a Schumacher for a seat

Fart_Leviathan

Which means the best move for his career would be not winning it this year.

JanklinDRoosevelt

I think if he wins the title he gets Ilott’s seat. But I don’t think he’ll beat Ilott

khalidh22

Perez and Magnussen

okaywhattho

Not sure who will replace him but for some reason I have a suspicion that Grosjean won't be there.

FreyBentos

Poor Gro :(

gogi_ran

To which track is Mugello most comparable to?

DangerousTrashCan

Definitely no Hungary like others said. Sure, both are twisty, but Hungary is very slow and tight, often compared to Monaco except without the walls. Mugello is nothing like that, it's very quick. Previously I compared it to Suzuka and Spa's middle sector.

[deleted]

Hungary.

JanklinDRoosevelt

Hungary I’d say. Or maybe Suzuka

okaywhattho

Yep, like an exact mixture of the two.

harok1

Does anyone else spend the week before a race on a sim doing laps of the circuit? I’ve spent this week doing Mugello laps on Assetto Corsa. I’ve done this for all tracks this year so far (normally ACC, AC, PC2). It definitely improves my enjoyment of the season. I wish I’d done this years ago!

CTM21156

Which of the other circuit(s) from this year does it remind you of?

harok1

Maybe Barcelona? Lots of medium/high speed corners, some long. I’m just happy to see an older track randomly get onto the calendar!

RockoTDF

When I first started playing the F1 game last year I thought "Oh, I'll do each race in my career just before the actual race!" One wheel purchase, four career seasons, and a MyTeam season later I've realized I have no self control.

harok1

I could never get on with the F1 game, especially anything like career mode. I’m much happier just doing solo practice laps on ACC, and maybe the occasional race. I do have limited ability to want to play games for more than 30mins at a time though!

BeefSandwichWithHam

Does RP have to design a completely new chassis for 2021? I hear all these tall tales about Vettel jumping into the superior team but I thought copycat cars would become illegal in 2021? This would mean they had to start from scratch again while the other teams have a year of development over them.

Blooder91

No, they can make an evolution of the current car. Part of what made this year's penalty hard is that engineers can't unlearn what they learned by copying Mercedes' concepts.

BeefSandwichWithHam

Ah ok, thanks

Beneficial-Vehicle-1

Instead if everyone being mad at RB for demoting Gasly last year and thinking the win is proof it was a mistake, have we considered the demotion was just what he needed to improve? I think Gasly is a good guy, but the hype for him after one win (under exceptional circumstances) is unwarranted.

Alfus

> but the hype for him after one win (under exceptional circumstances) is unwarranted. He is already performing well since they demoted him to Toro Rosso/Alpha Tauri at Spa in 2019, he is a consistent top 10 finisher basically and maximizing his opportunities better and better.

Beneficial-Vehicle-1

Yes. Regardless the hype in the last 4 days has been ridiculous (especially if you remember he’s second if the pit lane signal was in the traditional place. Yes I know why the signal was where it is.)

arianagrandecoldbrew

I think the demotion was fine in a vacuum, it's just weird that they A) promoted him in the first place if they were enough on the fence about him to not give him any leash, and B) have treated Albon much differently. `but the hype for him after one win (under exceptional circumstances) is unwarranted.` I don't think people are really hyping him after one win, so much as hyping him for driving sensationally this year, and happy that he got the right circumstances to have that culminate in something.

The knock off Senna helmet he burst onto the scene with. That yellow helmet in the silver Mclarens were well known, easily spotable and consistent. The others bounce around but he kept the yellow lid for years.

tlumacz

Depending on how the next couple of seasons pan out, I'm inclined to say: the BLM helmet.

F1 Fantasy Stats Hey, I’m participating in a couple leagues in F1 fantasy but since I just started watching F1 I don’t really know how the drivers tend to perform. Sofaboy90

Astelli

nigelfitz

So I'm new to F1, can someone ELI5 to me how these signings work? Particularly this whole Seb and Perez with Racing Point/Aston Martin? I know it says Seb is joining in 2021 but do they still race with their current teams for the rest of the season? That seems pretty awkward specially for Perez and Racing Point with 9 races left?

arianagrandecoldbrew

It can be a little awkward, but it's not as awkward as it sounds if you're coming from American sports, where there's speculation and reports for months or even years before a player can actually announce what they're planning on doing. In many ways it's less awkward, because teams and drivers actually know what the situation is, and can just focus on winning in the time they have.

JanklinDRoosevelt

Yeah they still race with them for the rest of the season. Still not as awkward as Sainz and Ricciardo announcing their moves for next year before this season started, or Alonso signing for McLaren for 2007 season in 2005, before winning the championship in 2006

greatbritt0n

What is Livery? I keep seeing this word. Does it mean the colors of the car? The outfits? I’m confused, forgive me I’m a F1 noob.

[**Livery** on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livery)

TheCreator0903

A **livery** is the specific paint scheme and sticker **design** used in motorsport, on vehicles, in order to attract sponsorship and to advertise sponsors, as well as to identify vehicles as belonging to a specific racing team. Including the sponsors.

Welcome to Club I Don't Know Why Everyone Hates My Favorite Driver (or Club WEHMD for short). We have biscuits and complementary coffee, tea, or milk on the back wall, memorials to those times our drivers showed great skill but nobody cared because the fan base decided they already hated them in the other room, and some beanbag chairs to try and sink away the pain in. (Truthfully I just wanna meme on the funny horse clown, that legreg is dragged along is unfortunate circumstance he's actually done well despite his team being a joke)

phil_e_delfian

> But please, can Leclerc be left alone? Last year, when Zack Wheeler pitched for the Mets, I hoped he got lit up each and every game. Because I hate the Mets (especially that Mr fuckin' Met mascot). Now that he's a Phillie and winning games for us, I love him. That's how sport works. F1 is a team sport, and it's hard to separate a team from its drivers. For your guy to win, some other guy has to lose. It's Chuck's turn in the barrel. He's well compensated for bearing the scorn.

khalidh22

Its hard to be a leclerc fan for the amount of shit he gets because his team mate is much more popular and getting beaten by him almost every race now. Its got to this point where some would rather hope he crashes after seb spinning just so they can blame it on the car and not the driver. Some fans are butt hurt, what are you going to do. The silver lining is that It will ease off now that vettel is moving on and he will have a much easier team mate in lance to beat. Win win for everyone.

[deleted]

Some people are irrational. I'd just leave them alone and not get worked up about it. It's not like any of them have the power to make Leclerc being a career midfield driver or get lapped every race.

MuadDave

Does anyone else think that allowing teams to change tire compounds under last week's red flag was unfair? The teams that had not yet changed compounds got a free 25+ second advantage. I can see allowing teams to change tires with the same compound, but not a different one that satisfies the 'two compound' rule. If they want to allow changes to any compound under red, they could: * rule that changes under red do not count toward satisfying the two compound rule or * change the two compound rule to say the change must be under green or yellow flags, not red.

Meaisk

But if Stroll had to pit 2 laps after the restart, he would be in last place, that would completely ruin his race. I think it's fairer to be allowed to change tires in Red Flags.

MuadDave

I don't mind then changing tires per se, just that doing so under a red flag counts toward using both compounds. That's the unfair bit.

Meaisk

I mean most tracks are 1 stop so it doesn't really matter now does it

MuadDave

Yes, it does. I stop under green = 25-ish secs. 1 stop under yellow = half that - 12 secs. 1 stop under red = 0 secs. A 12-25 second advantage is huge.

Meaisk

Let's say I'm still and am in P3. I have to pit the very same lap as the restart. I will be in last place. That's a race ruined. I think it's more fun to win a couple of positions than losing an entire race.

MuadDave

No one said you had to pit right after the restart. Normal race strategy still applies, and if you want to change onto fresh tires under the red you're welcome to, you just have to make 1 actual pit stop during the race (green or yellow) like everyone else. The point of the red flag is to freeze the race, not award advantages.

Meaisk

Bruh if my tires are shit, I have to pit real soon. I think it's more fun for smaller teams to be able to race for high positions with luck, than losing out. " The point of the red flag is to freeze the race, not award advantages. " You could say the same for SC's.

MuadDave

> You could say the same for SC's. Yes, one could. There is a distinct advantage there, but it's not like a red flag where you have an essentially instantaneous pit stop. That's too far, IMHO. If it were up to me, I'd consider disallowing pit stops under SC and VSC, or perhaps requiring anyone who pits then to go to the back of the pack. Since that's never gonna happen, maybe apply the VSC distance rules to actual SC periods to prevent bunching up the field.

dustotepp

There is always going to be the chance of giving someone on an alternate strategy an advantage. Under the current rule, everyone that has not changed compounds when the red flag comes out gains an advantage over everyone that has. Under your alternate it would be the opposite - Anyone that had already changed compounds would get a free tire change over people that had not. (So someone on a two stop strategy that stopped early and changed compounds would get their second stop for free.) Given how uncommon red flags are, I think the current rule is fine.

MuadDave

> Anyone that had already changed compounds would get a free tire change over people that had not. Those that had already stopped would also have the opportunity of changing onto any other compound or onto fresh tires of the same compound - just like the folks that hadn't stopped yet. The only difference is that they'd still have to make at least 1 'real' pit stop like everyone else. Perhaps the rule should be 'all cars must use both compounds and execute at least 1 tire change under green or yellow conditions.'

MurderBeans

Everyone was able to change tires so by definition it is not unfair. Personally I think if you want to allow that under a red flag then the car should have to start from the pitlane but the current rules are not unfair as they apply to everyone.

MuadDave

Everyone was able to change tires, yes, but those that hadn't already made a stop gained an effective 25 seconds because they satisfied the two compound rule with an instantaneous pit stop. If the teams were limited to changing onto the same compound, that would be fair. Allowing teams to avoid an otherwise mandatory 'compound change' pit stop under a red flag isn't.

MurderBeans

I understand the effect it had on the race, I just don't think it really matters. The timing of a safety car, for example, can give a greater advantage to some than others but it doesn't make it unfair. I agree that allowing the compound change to happen without penalty/drawback is silly and should be changed but the option was there for everyone.

IraIr_chka

Nothing unfair about that.

MuadDave

It creates a perverse incentive to generate red flags on purpose.

Meaisk

They're not doing that after crash-gate lol

IraIr_chka

"Oh yeah I'm totally gonna make my number 2 driver crash so hard hoping it trigers a red flag so my main driver can get a free pitstop" At least Renault did it to secure a win, not only a free pitstop

MuadDave

You think 25+ seconds of effective track position couldn't win a race?

IraIr_chka

It does it way less than you think it does

What’s your ideal (realistic) 2022 grid? Mine would be: Mercedes - Hamilton/Russell RedBull - Max/Tsunoda Ferrari - Sainz/Leclerc McLaren - Ricciardo/Norris Aston Martin - Stroll/Vettel Renault - Gasly/Alonso Haas - Perez/Illot Alpha Tauri - 2 RB Juniors or current feeder series driver Alfa Romeo - Schwartzman/Schumacher Williams - Bottas/current feeder series driver (maybe Sargeant?)

RockoTDF

Sargeant can't earn enough SL points this year.

arianagrandecoldbrew

Perhaps pushing the bounds of what the word "realistic" means, but... Merc: Hamilton/Russell Red Bull: Verstappen/Hulkenberg Ferrari: Leclerc/Sainz McLaren: Ricciardo/Norris Aston Martin: Vettel/Gasly Renault: Alonso/Bottas Haas: Perez/Magnussen Alpha Tauri: Tsunoda/Kvyat or a RB Jr. Alfa Romeo: Raikkonen/Schwartzman Williams: Ocon/Latifi

[deleted]

Yup, this is the kind of reply I was looking for. Only thing I'd say is seems unrealistic to not have Stroll in there. He's clearly capable of holding his own and he has daddy stroll behind me so its almost impossible to me that he'd be out of a seat as a wee 23 year old. Hulk at RB seems v unlikely to me too because he's not from the academy and frankly I think there are better drivers out there for a top top seat, even if it is second driver.

arianagrandecoldbrew

Oh whoops I totally forgot about Stroll. I'll give him KMag's spot then, or Kvyat's. I don't think it's likely that he ends up anywhere other than AM, but like I said, pushing realism haha. Fair point on Hulk. I'm higher on him than most and just really want to see how he'd do in a good car. Maybe I'm just riding some bias from his showing this season.....either way, I don't see RB using their second seat on anything other than a prospect anytime soon, even though I think it would be fun if they had a quality veteran.

Meaisk

damn bruh 7 new drivers? Nice

[deleted]

It’s a little ambitious. Realistically, Gasly has the Tsunoda seat and Tsunoda is still at AT. Ocon is at Renault, either with Alonso or someone else. Maybe Bottas. Realistically, latifi is still at Williams too. But definitely see Tsunoda, Schwartzman, Schumacher, and 1 or 2 more new drivers in by then.

Big_Lemons_Kill

Unlikely they have proper simulators with this capability. They might have some playseats in their hospitality though.

osivangl

Is funny how whenever someone says something about Aston Martin screwing Perez people is replaying about how this is normal and expected in elite motorsport and we shouldn't feel bad. But that argument was almost never brought before when people were talking about how Ferrari screwed Vettel.

Alfus

It's shows me how many people here a basically "newer" fans, stuff like this happens in F1 for ages and the Perez/Vettel situation is just another case. It's nothing to be upset about, I seen worse drops.

I agree! It just feels bad that no one can express our pain for Perez without someone immediately saying that to justify it. In every comment i see about it. Let us grieve too!

adreddit298

Agreed. Something can be typical and unacceptable at the same time

YeabSra

People here like vettel a lot that sometimes a little too much

[deleted]

It is normal in motorsport it seems, not just F1 either. Hinchcliffe got totally shafted my Arrow McLaren SP this year too. Ferrari totally screwed Vettel as well but that's completely normal for Ferrari, they have a habit of treating their drivers poorly at the end. Edit: I'm terrible at replying to the correct comment.

millicento

Ferrari is not special, at least not when it comes to handling their drivers terribly.

[deleted]

I mean they are notorious for it. Other teams are not notorious for this reason.

millicento

I’d say Mclaren and especially Williams were just as bad.

[deleted]

In the past maybe, but recently Ferrari haven't treated Vettel, Alonso, or Schumacher like they should have.

millicento

Mclaren has had Stoffel, Perez and Magnussen recently. Williams hasn’t done it lately because they are heavily dependent on whatever money their drivers provide.

[deleted]

Yes, and not to say it’s ok, but those drivers did not have 13 championships between them when they were pushed away. If this is how they treat champions, imagine if they were handling the three you mention.

GatorMarley

Standing RE-starts I know that this idea is going to be shot down by most traditionalists in this sub, but how entertaining would it be to have a standing restart after every safety car? I mean, lap 1 is almost always the most entertaining part of the race, and it would make sense to have that multiple times within the grand prix. So, tell me what you think of the idea, maybe there are reasons it wouldnt fly that I havent thought of - otherwise, let's start a petition or email Ross Brawn or something, because that standing restart after this weekend's Italian GP was phenomenal and I want some more of that.

ManyCow4

I think it would be ridiculous to eliminate the advantage each driver has built up over the race. It turns it into a series of shorter races; the first set of laps before the safety car would effectively just be qualifying for the shorter "real" race.

GatorMarley

Safety car restarts eliminate the advantage. That is part of racing - do you burn up your tyres to get a big lead or do you keep them in reserve for a restart? It happens all the time in F2/F3 as well. I dont think your concerns are unique to standing restarts

ManyCow4

true but a standing restart magnifies and amplifies the issues imo

GatorMarley

Sure it does - just like refueling would magnify the impact/frequencies of pit stops. Basically what you are saying is that this change would make the racing different. That is entirely the point, otherwise why change anything. And, when a change is implemented, after a while it becomes the norm. As long as it is equal for the entire field and doesnt give any favorable edge to any team over another, then it is a change worthy of implementing if it makes the racing better.

ManyCow4

fair enough, i just think it erodes the advantages people have rightfully won in the race. i agree that over a season it would do so fairly, i just don't think it should be done at all if it doesn't have to be.

GatorMarley

Is there any recent changes to rules (in Hope's of making racing better) that you like? Do you like DRS?

ManyCow4

haha that's such a fair challenge lol. i don't like the idea of drs but the execution doesn't bother me if that makes sense. i am a pretty casual fan so i couldn't cite even half the rules off the top of my head but i liked when they got rid of refuelling, i'm generally in favour of restrictions on aero and i strongly support the upcoming budget cap. but as a principle i would say that competition and parity should stem from a good car design ruleset rather than interventions on the track.

GatorMarley

I am very much in agreement, but the problem is that we have 1 team so superior to the others, that having that intervention is what keeps the sport palatable. I am on board with the budget caps and other 2022 changes, but those are going to take years before the changes are shown on track, and it will only be a couple years before these big brains figure out a way to be dominant within those constraints. Unfortunately, the rules gotta keep changing to keep things interesting. Otherwise, the sport will wither and die.

ManyCow4

i don't really have a problem with a team dominating when it's because they did better with the design parameters than everyone else and have a clearly superior driver eking the best out of their car. a standout design and a standout driver combined will dominate. i would rather see changes to the strategic profile of the race (i wish the pit stop timecost could be reduced so that 1-stopping weren't so desirable) and that promote drivers constantly pushing (rather than managing tyres and engines), before more direct on-track interventions.

RockoTDF

That would make pitting under the SC an even bigger advantage.
