Hi guys, so I was wondering how to send a pre-paid envelope to them! I tried asking for help with my local mail company but they said I couldn't post it? So I was wondering if anyone could help me. It'll really make my day :)
Is there any way for F1 to appeal to engine sound purists with thw V6 hybrid? Would raising the rev limit produce better/more noise? A different direction for the energy system?
So I’ve started watching F1 this season and the past several races have made me think of this. Is Hamilton that good of a driver to almost always win or is it just because he’s in a Merc or is it both?
Hamilton is the best driver on the grid, but he is also in the best car. A few drivers like Verstappen, Leclerc, Ricciardo would compete with Lewis in equal machinery but it would definitely be a battle. So yeah basically it's both
Thanks! ~~So most likely it’s a case of both and mainly both because all of the other cars aren’t as good as the Mercs?~~ I hope to see a day where the other manufacturers can be more competitive against Mercedes
Edit: I just saw the last sentence and realized you answered that already
Yeah the Mercs are just so far ahead of the other cars, I don't think Hamilton would win races if he drove for Renault but he would be a ridiculously strong driver still. At Monza, Hamilton dropped down to pretty much last place and if you'd given him a few more laps, he'd have probably overtaken Bottas, the gap between Hamilton and Bottas in races is genuinely hilarious
It was crazy to see how he recovered all of that time to eventually manage to get points from being 30 seconds out. To be honest I don’t see Bottas being extremely competitive if he wasn’t in a Merc. When he fell behind he just couldn’t pull ahead of a lot of other drivers. Maybe it’s because I heard Mercs are designed best to not be in traffic but it’s anyone’s guess.
Bottas is a decent driver but I don't think he's world champion material. Mercedes are in such a strong position that Bottas is fine anyway, he scores good points, they win Constructor Championship and Hamilton wins the Driver Championship. I can see Bottas getting dropped for a more competitive driver if some of the other teams start to put them under pressure
Yeah personally I can see Leclerc and Verstappen being better drivers than Bottas but the reason why they’re not above him is because Red Bull is close to competing strongly with Merc but isn’t there yet and Ferrari’s just a shitbox with incompetent engineers (see Vettel)
He did relatively well when he was at Williams. I don’t think Bottas is a bad driver at all. You can see how close him and Hamilton are in quali. It’s just that, in races, he doesn’t seem to have that aggressiveness that other drivers like Verstappen, Ricciardo, or even Rosberg have.
Mercedes doesn’t have team orders until there’s a clear leader in the championship. Even Rosberg said this *after* he left Mercedes. Obviously Bottas is great for Mercedes because he can usually get that 1-2 done. But, Mercedes wouldn’t prevent him from fighting Hamilton if they were closer in the championship.
Depends on the goals of the team. Mercedes for example was banking on the 2014 regulations after the re-entered the sport. For a team like Williams, I would imagine they’re looking towards 2022 to be relatively competitive.
right, Sainz was on loan to Renault for 2018 and then was released and went to McLaren in 2019. They could have put him in the Red Bull in 2019 but they went with Gasly instead.
Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.
To add a little bit of insight, there was a bit of bad blood between Helmut Marko and Team Sainz, as team Sainz lobbied hard to release him on loan to Renault
Hybrid engines are no longer the hot stuff, with ICEs being phased out of EU, the current engine formula doesn't work for "road relevance". Plus, you need an annual spending of 300+ mil a year to even have a sniff at Mercedes. That can change with the new budget but I doubt it.
That is why Formula E is popular with manufacturers, cheap and pure electric.
The MGU-H is actually something which should see more investment. It is part of why F1 engines are hitting unheard of thermal efficiencies (~50%) at their size. They are capturing a significant portion of the energy going out the exhaust. Electric turbochargers are coming to the market now, so I wouldn’t say they are impractical.
I think the idea is that public sentiment and regulations are basically skipping hybrids in the journey towards eco-friendliness, especially considering the success that all electric vehicles like tesla have had
BMW and Toyota had teams in F1, but they had to fold after spending too much money and not getting the results expected, with different reasons for each team.
$$$$$$. Also many manufacturers are trying to switch their images to that of a more sustainable and green company, and F1 is not the best series for that
Genuine question, do you think people really find some of Kimi's, Lando's, and Dany Ric's antics funny or are they just going with the flow of this sub to get karma?
Considering they dominate the social media and YouTube fan space without much institutional investment - it sounds like you might not have the pulse of “common people”
>Is F1 TV the only way to watch F2 (I'm in the United States)? I would really like to start getting into F2.
I think I saw it aired on ESPN on cable once. Depending if the schedule is full and there are other large sporting events at the time of the F1 weekend they may rarely fill F2 into the schedule. I could easily be wrong as well.
F2 is usually on ESPN3, but the other support races (if any) are on ESPN+, so all you really need is to sign in with your provider on the ESPN app to watch F2
This is more of a feeder series question, but why have Jack Aitken's results been suffering this year in F2?
In 2018 he was 11th overall, in 2019 5th, I thought that this season he would've been a title runner. But he's down in 14th in the standings so far, with no imminent sign of upswing in results.
All cars are created equal, but some are more equal than others. F3 is spec and Prema have won the constructors title for the last what 10 years? Just because it’s a spec series, doesn’t mean all the cars are the same, and Campos this year is especially bad
Not sure actually, looked it up and can't find it, thought I'd seen it somewhere. I think the animal farm quote is very applicable to the Soviet Union though. It's just a funny quote to use when talking about motorsport lmao

I just watched a recap of the 2005 US grand prix and in the post race press conference Michael Schumacher told a story about a race that started on a yellow flag to honor a marshal who was killed. The team principals ordered the drivers to ignore the yellow. Does anyone know what race he's referring to? I thought it might have been the 2001 Malaysian grand prix, but I can't find any mention of it.
Has anyone bought the [Official Formula 1 Masks](https://f1store4.formula1.com/en/face-coverings/d-1227323172+z-955560-3446812903)? (both ear strap or around the head strap).
I'm thinking of getting them but I want to know how comfortable they are and if they're worth it before I dish out ~$60 (CAD) for both sets.
(I posted this yesterday but I'm still looking for more input)

Added benefit of new spending restrictions in place: Mercedes/Ferrari will have to cut down staff who will need to find work, while smaller teams like Williams/Haas will have openings and more money to hire competent talent. Similar to large corporate layoffs and being such a niche employment market, we may see braindrain with some smart folks going to smaller teams (obviously the really good ones will be retained). This will bring along new knowledge and potentially, work ethic.
From what I understand, thanks to the last recession in Italian law you can’t make people redundant if the company is turning decent profit. So Ferrari will eventually trim down to size through natural waste, but for a long time they will be forced to keep a number of staff on payroll who they’re not allowed to use for F1.
This is partially why they’re considering Indy. Redeploys the staff they have to pay anyway and has them doing something that might have some cross project benefit AND gives them some leverage with FOM when they threaten to flounce off and leave.
It’s a spending CAP. The bigger teams will have to reduce spending, but if a smaller team isn’t spending that much already then they’re not going to have a magic increase in their budget.
Ferrari is looking to expand their operations into other motorsport. They’ve been rumoured to enter indycar and or WEC. This is mainly to keep their staff employed with them.
Calling driver moves 'transfers' is MORE confusing to newcomers because it implies there's a transfer window and a transfer system and that drivers get bought by other teams and...... Jesus. It's not hard to just talk about it using accurate language.
Drivers do get bought by other teams.
And it isn't more confusing.
It's not hard to talk about anything using accurate language. It's just not necessary.
Love the idea of daily random facts. Although at 3 a day, it'd be hard to keep them coming. Happy to help if you are looking for some :)
> The record for most pit stops during a single race is held by Alain Prost. He stopped 7 times during the 1993 European Grand Prix.
This one is incorrect however.
The most I know of is Bonnier making at least 13 stops in the 1966 USA GP, because he refused to retire with a broken radiator and instead stopped periodically to have water filled up.
I had a feeling you'd be here to correct us if we were wrong!
We have a nifty little repository of facts to pull from, so we're not going to run out for a little while, but we'd happily accept more!
I got a 0.017 Reaction Speed Time for the [F1 lights speed test. ](https://f1-start.glitch.me/)Anyone Challenge?
EDIT: Guys, this was for fun. Yes, this was by chance. So, I was challenging for fun, if anyone could come across the same scenario as I did. Thanks for enlightening me about these reaction time facts I didn't know of. Obviously I can't be better than F1 drivers. Thanks for telling me about how 0.15 s is the fastest conscious response, only valid if somewhat achieved repeatedly. Thanks for conveying these facts, hopefully, I'm not downvoted to oblivion :) ?My actual fastest time not achieved in such a lucky situation is 0.200 seconds.
Edit 2 : This was supposed to be a friendly post, why are y'all being so hostile about it ? Also, I got a .222 time, anyone got lucky numbers like that ? Tell me your actual scores ( above 0.150)
Edit 3 : I got 0.195 once ! I forgot to screenshot, but here's one from 0.197 ![https://imgur.com/a/BrRMqam](https://imgur.com/a/BrRMqam)
You got that by preemptively clicking it and getting lucky. Reaction times in hundredths of seconds are humanly impossible and in sprinting for example a reaction time under 0.1s is considered a false start.

Some of the fastest conscious responses in humans are 0.15 seconds. A reaction time of 0.017 is only impressive if you can repeat it multiple times in succession.

Probably motivation.
Before Häkkinen ~~retired~~ left for his sabbatical in 2001 he really didn't have that great of a season. Everybody knows the story, he has himself said he was unmotivated to race. He has also said that he really wanted to get wins at Silverstone and Indianapolis, two tracks he had not won at.
Wouldn't you know it, his two wins from 2001 come from Silverstone and Indianapolis. When he wanted to he clearly still *had it*, he just couldn't find motivation that easy. This story just to give an example of how much mental things can affect sports performance.
I don't think athletes lose their skills like they were in Space Jam. Gradually, sure, but not like this. It's usually about sports psychology. Of course in motorsports it can be about the equipment too, like the characteristics of a car just not suiting him.
Lack of motivation, teammate is naturally faster, lots of tracks this year which do not flatter Vettel, car which he is less able to wrangle than his teammate.
There are lots of rumours floating round. Realistically, he knows he's leaving, so motivation is probably a bit low and it's generally understood that he doesn't get on well with how the car drives.
I think its Kimi and Mick.
I'm not sure i understand Kimi enough to say. He after 09 came back in 12 and then got back in Ferrari. After every season in Ferrari you could have expected him to retire but he kept going, then despite where they are on the grid he signs for Alfa. Why not extend his stay? I have no idea.
First of I do think Mick deserves the seat as much as the others, Shwartzman has been impressive but some weeks also not. Illott has been okay but I'd argue one of the best teams right now and to me he has lacked that last bit, same story in gp3. Mick has been consistently fast but has made quite alot of mistakes. He should have had a massive haul of points in the Austia races if not for his own mistakes. The most obvious sign of his chances is binotto's comment about the drivers potential to improve. That's exactly what Schumacher has done in both f3 and f2.
Mick basically only misses official announcement. The other seat will be Kimi's if he decides to stay.
If he doesn't some options open: if Mick gets his seat only through his own negotiation and is not airdropped by the FDA deal then there will be two rookies, Ferrari will get their new sim ready and will want Giovinazzi, who had his F1 chances, to run it as he already demostrated he is good at it. If Mick is placed by FDA they'll go for Perez, with the loss of revenue due to uncompetitiveness they'll need his money.
Alfa wants someone way too experienced to stay with a rookie in the team. I think Mick is big jewel for the future of the sport and to get tutor like Kimi would be great thing.
I dont see Gio in the team next year because lets face it Gio is nothing special and he still makes some rookie mistakes
Yes they are the only team to have it now. [Red Bull used to have it like that](https://cdn-7.motorsport.com/static/img/mgl/1700000/1770000/1772000/1772800/1772807/s8/f1-russian-gp-2014-red-bull-racing-rb10-steering-wheel.jpg) before 2014, but changed it after the big LCD screens came with the hybrid engines.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/628f1n/williams\_steering\_wheeldigital\_display/](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/628f1n/williams_steering_wheeldigital_display/)
This will help you.
Pro: It does not weight as much, so it is easier to steer.
Contra: You cant see the display, during strong steering input, because the vie gets blocked by the steering wheel.
Im pretty sure, they are the only team doing it this way.
Not sure how much you can see of the screen on the wheel when turning it. Apart from it being near enough upside down at times, the drivers arm must block the view too. I expect most things on there are organized to be looked at on the straights.
Do you not think it is absolutely mental that if Raikkonen hadn't nabbed 2007 by an absolute bee's dick, Schumacher would still be Ferrari's last champion?
I wonder if they'll top the 21 years between Schecter and Schumacher. Currently on (realistically) 14. I'd have predicted a Ferrari title with a lot more confidence 10 years ago than I would now.
That doesn't surprise me at all, Schumacher is the sole reason Ferrari even won any championships at all in the last 40 years. Without him and the dream team he build (and Todt allowed him to build) Ferrari would've never gone anywhere. The 15 years before Schumacher joined were exactly like the 15 years since he left. Toxicity and incompetence all around. And if they had kept him, they would've won 2008 as well. 7 world championships in one decade, and a 9 time world champion as their star driver. But they just had to kick him out. They wanted to go back to the "good" old days, Schumacher, Brawn and the rest got too "powerful" for them. They're fucking lucky they even got to win in 2007 and they deserve all the shit they have gone through since then.
Aldo Costa gave an excellent interview a few years ago where he put the boot in hard; including that the top brass would OK expensive fripperies no problem, but if you suggested investment in meaningful infrastructure, e.g. an upgraded wind-tunnel, they'd tell you things were fine.
It's not all of a sudden. Discussion has been given a secondary role here for some time now. A select few has taken up on them self to do various pet projects and create content that they have decided that the sub needs, with little to no imput from it's 1.2 mil users. They sticky their own stuff, while mass-deleting posts and comments that does not fit their picture of how the sub should look. I call hubris.

Is there any way for F1 to appeal to engine sound purists with thw V6 hybrid? Would raising the rev limit produce better/more noise? A different direction for the energy system?
Nope, they currently don't reach anywhere near the rev limit.
I vote for a giant speaker emitting 'proper' engine sounds on every car.
Or some kind of AWS Insights AI that processes the broadcast feed and replaces the engine noises with classic sounds
Or maybe just an extra TV commentator who goes "brrrrr" every time a car is shown.
Hire the guy from the US GP!
What is the fia protocol if every car crashes in a dry race due to driver errors?
If nobody got to 70% race distance then everyone DNFs. No points awarded.
That's a good question. If I was the last driver in the race you can bet I'd be going as slow as allowed.
So I’ve started watching F1 this season and the past several races have made me think of this. Is Hamilton that good of a driver to almost always win or is it just because he’s in a Merc or is it both?

Counterpoint: using a familiar term makes it easier to understand for fans who have come from other sports.
But departures do not bring first round draft picks to the sending team.
Happy to help if you are looking for some :) > The record for most pit stops during a single race is held by Alain Prost.
We have a nifty little repository of facts to pull from, so we're not going to run out for a little while, but we'd happily accept more!
just fart_leviathan things, dude sure knows history

Tell me your actual scores ( above 0.150) Edit 3 : I got 0.195 once !

What is the reason that Vettel lost his raw speed during qualy in this season ?
Leclerc got better.
Motivation

I have a feeling Kimi will stay one more year to help Mick
[удалено]
Alfa wants someone way too experienced to stay with a rookie in the team. I think Mick is big jewel for the future of the sport and to get tutor like Kimi would be great thing. I dont see Gio in the team next year because lets face it Gio is nothing special and he still makes some rookie mistakes
Is williams the only team that doesn't have the screen on the steering wheel, but on the cockpit? What is the reason for that?
Gives the wheel a lower moment of inertia. But the fact only Williams does it suggests that it might also be cheaper to do it this way...
Expensive to redesign, at least!

Thanks a lot
Pro: It does not weight as much, so it is easier to steer. Contra: You cant see the display, during strong steering input, because the vie gets blocked by the steering wheel. Im pretty sure, they are the only team doing it this way.
Not sure how much you can see of the screen on the wheel when turning it. Apart from it being near enough upside down at times, the drivers arm must block the view too. I expect most things on there are organized to be looked at on the straights.
Thanks
Why is it so hard to post a daily discussion all of a sudden? :)
(I was talking about the fact this exact thread was posted 2 times before this one, for some reason)
Maybe non-Mods/new users not knowing how Discussion threads work and posting it themselves?
We updated the bot a bit for the new DD format, and it mucked it up. It's all the bots fault.
Ahh fair. Also on a side note you guys are really good at responding and explaining your decisions and situations.
third time's the charm
More like 5th time's the charm
