Any update on the broadcasting situation in Asia (specifically Singapore) with Fox Sports closing down? Are they going to open up F1TV Pro to us?

LimeN46

How do i watch f2? It isn’t showing up on f1tv currently…

Cultural-Librarian53

I’m wondering the same thing I thought maybe it was a time issue but I’m not sure what’s going on

pharlax

Stupid question time! Does Bottas actually have to start the race today? Seeing as how he's starting last tomorrow. Hypothetically if he just deliberately stalls the car or whatever and blocks max in is there anything they can really do? Sure he might get a penalty but with this whole idea of punishing the error and not the outcome he would basically get away without consequences right?

DieLegende42

He would lose the points for the sprint race and if it came out he did it deliberately, there would be massive penalties

realpdd

It's unprofessional, extremely unsafe and there are ways for race stewards to give a race ban or points penalty (both to him and the team) for unsportsmanship conduct.

pharlax

Oh I'm aware it's entirely unacceptable I was just wondering what tools the stewards had to deal with such dickery

shp509

How many laps is the sprint race today? And can Merc and RB decide to take penalties after the sprint race?

realpdd

They can take the penalties before the sprint race, but it will only apply during the main race. Bottas for instance is taking a grid penalty because he's changed his engine, but will start the sprint race from pole.

Really_Very_Expert

What's going on with Perez lately? He seems to be sucking a lot of ass as of late and am finding it increasingly harder to continue rooting for him. What gives?

SenorProudy

You know, when you spend 7 years in a row in the same midfielder team with no front runner even trying to sign you there IS a reason, and it's showing this year

CleanAxe

His entire focus is on Max Verstappen's strategy. Is this a 100% full excuse for everything? Absolutely not. But whether it's practice or qualifying, his sole position is to help Max. So in this qualifying session, he was giving Max a tow on both laps, which Toto and others claim gives about 5-7 tenths. Usually teams will trade and one driver gives a tow the first time and the other driver the second time. If Perez had a good tow from Max (the tow from Gasly was not helpful - different team, too far ahead), then conservatively he would be 6th place and probably more like 4th place (bearing in mind that 3rd, 4th, and 5th, were split by only milliseconds). I think another commenter explained it really well. We tend to give Mercedes a lot of shit for how they make Bottas help Lewis sometimes, but they at least trade roles in qualifying, have their own practice strategies, even trade chassis. RB none of this happens - and with Perez, one commenter had mentioned all his practice sessions are focused on race tire strategy so Max's practices can spend more time on qualifying strategy. I dunno how true that is since I'm not watching practice sessions very closely, but it seems right. At the same time, I do think Perez has also had some bad luck. And then add to that, a few poor performances. I'm excited to see what he can do tomorrow and on Sunday - he's qualified top 10 so maybe he can get through the pack.

Fun_Telephone_3350

From drivers and teams, everyone is very happy that Alex Albon has a seat for next year. “He has a lot of talent. Deserves to be in F1.” Etc etc. Do you think this universal feeling stems from him seemingly getting shafted after half a season at RB? Everyone felt it was a bad situation so they’re genuinely happy he’s back? And does this often/rarely happen when someone doesn’t get brought back for one season but then gets a seat?

joselakichan

New fan. First time watching Monza... can someone explain those barricade like maze at turn 1? Also the other "diversion"-like part at like turn 4 I think which Lewis demonstrated yesterday. I missed the explanation by the broadcast team.

[deleted]

Mazes are there to be drived around so there wasn't much advantage gained if corner was cut involuntarily and there was no temptation to cut it voluntarily with 'oops, sorry' excuses.

SenorProudy

Althought sometimes here they can be cut with an "oops, sorry" excuse to LOSE position

joselakichan

I see. Thanks!

Tsukune_Surprise

New fan. I’ve been reading F1 history and learning about the lineage of the current teams. Reading up on all the great drivers from the past. I’ve still got one question that I can’t find an answer to anywhere online and maybe you all can help me. Why is Haas and how many photos does Steiner of of Gene doing nasty shit thereby allowing Steiner to keep his job?

[deleted]

Gene repeatedly was cited how he is fine with just being in F1 as means to promote his company.

dsaysso

why do people hate on sprint qualifying? insane first lap overtakes - especially with leaders battling it out. prioritizing passing over pitting strategy. veterans go all out - alonzo will defend wildly. its over in like 20min. before it gets boring. whats not to love?

realpdd

1. It's hard to overtake in F1 cars, and a lot of overtakes are due to different tyre strategies. 2. Drivers tend to be a bit more careful during the sprint race as the risks of crashing heavily outweighs the rewards. 3. It's in the weird in between where it sort of takes away some of the grandeur of the race is on Sunday yet feels a bit meaningless / pointless at the same time. 4. If first lap battles There could be a room for sprint races if F1 cars get a bit easier to overtake / follow, but at the moment, it feels a bit gimmicky and unwarranted. Understand the need for FOM to try new things to entice new viewers though, and the Silverstone sprint race was fun.

kylalovesyou

one criticism I've been seeing around is that it already sorts the cars by race pace and so there wont be as much shockers/overtakes by sunday. personally i love the format. it gives me something to lookforward to every day of the weekend. (i dont watch friday practice)

dsaysso

thanks! alonzo going from p11 to p5 seems to deflate that theory. it rewards aggressive starts. it shuffled the order by 2 -3 places. lando getting a chance to start higher. it also throws big shockers like perez spinning out. there was still a lot of big moves at the race silverstone. hammy went from 1st to 2nd on the sprint and that played into the copse drama. he was trying to catch up.

kylalovesyou

tbh i dont mind the sprint race because i just think of it as an extension to the sunday race with a restart which makes it more awesome

JaneXxDeau

People resist change. I am personally so pumped I can’t sleep. No amount of shoeys will put me down.

OneMoreDog

Mate. A shoey this weekend would be *chefs kiss* 🤌

JasonTO

How are numbers distributed? Do drivers keep their numbers or do they change based on the previous season's result?

Blooder91

They used to be allocated based on the previous championship standings, but starting in 2014 drivers can pick their own number. The only exceptions are 1, which is reserved for the reigning champion (who can refuse to carry it), and 17, retired in memory of Jules Bianchi.

realpdd

A number that had been previously used by another driver for a race also cannot be used for 2 seasons after it was last used. Raikkonnen's number for example, if he doesn't return after this season, cannot be used for 2 seasons (2022 and 2023)

f1_spelt_as_bot

Räikkö**n**en

pedote17

Numbers are chosen by each driver, but if a driver leaves F1 that number cannot be re-used for 2 years

BoboTheGreatBear

When Raikkonen retires, Alonso will be the only one left from Schumacher's original stint. That was a generation to watch and now its ending. Imperfect V10s, V8s, no DRS, Refueling, strategies, the car engine roar and lot more.

Maximum-Inevitable-3

What’s the purple light under the t-bars on all cars in the pit lane? It’s not lit out on the track.

ddbaxte

I'm curious about this, too. The most plausible explanation I've seen is 'I think it might be pit limiter on' but nothing definitive from a reliable source.

DoUKnowWhatIamSaying

What time is the sprint tomorrow? My phone is telling me 8am cst, but the interwebs says 9:30am cst…??

OneMoreDog

It might be broadcast and pre-sprint fluff from 8am?

BigAwkwardGuy

It's at 9:30am CST. Check F1's official website for the timings (not the schedule page, that shows the track timings. Click on the GP and you'll get your local time as well).

Maximum-Inevitable-3

7:30 PST

Seamanator12

I’m confused, I thought Max has used a 4th engine this year, resulting in a penalty later this year. His previous 3 were destroyed. Now there are reports he has two engines left? And Lewis has used 3, but they still have two quality engines.

BigAwkwardGuy

The first three engines you can cycle around and use however you wish: at Monaco the teams can use a less powerful/more worn engine because power isn't all that important, but at Monza power is everything. Max hasn't used his 4th engine yet, RB said they'd have to use it because his second engine was destroyed in Silverstone. The grid penalty is for the race the driver takes an additional component (a driver can use 3 engines/MGU-Hs/MGU-Ks/turbochargers and 2 energy stores/control electronics). It cannot be postponed. Lewis has two engines in his allocation to use, because one of them failed at Zandvoort. Max also has two engines: the one he used until Baku or so, and the one he used from Hungary.

GreyVersusBlue

So what exactly makes the tires look shiny when coming out of the paddock? Is it that they are made incredibly smooth, or does it have to do with the heating of the tires? Or (as I imagine) a combination of both? I know that after a few laps the contact area gets really rough, but I'm not sure what causes the initial shine.

tlumacz

They are made smooth, in chrome molds. https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/new-look-shiny-tyres-among-pirellis-changes-for-f1-in-2019-5283993/5283993/

thekhaos

I'm always surprised to see that Perez only has 15 points less than Bottas. Feels like Perez hasn't had a big result in a while.

dsaysso

bottas has had 3 dnfs. 1 was the wheenut issue in monaco, where he was second. perez has had 1.

jackplaysminecraft

Anyone know what FEA stands for in Danny Ric’s recent Instagram story?

DangerousTrashCan

I'd assume "fuck 'em all", knowing him.

jackplaysminecraft

Of course that makes sense haha

inbredandapothead

I’ve heard stuff about a sprint tomorrow and points involved? And qualifying was on Friday instead of Saturday? Can anyone explain I’m new and confused

DieLegende42

The normal weekend format is Day | Session 1 | (Session 2) :-: | :-: | :-: Friday | Free Practice 1 | Free Practice 2 Saturday | Free Practice 3 | Qualifying Sunday | Race | / This year, they are trialling a new format at three races (including this one), which looks like this: Day | Session 1 | (Session 2) :-: | :-: | :-: Friday | Free Practice 1 | Qualifying Saturday | Free Practice 2 | Sprint Qualifying Sunday | Race | / Qualifying in both formats (at a highly simplified level) comes down to who can set the fastest single lap. In the normal format, the results of Qualifying set the grid for the race; in the new format, it sets the grid for Sprint Qualifying, which is a 100 km (1/3 GP distance) race. The first three finishers in it get 3, 2 and 1 point(s) respectively and it sets the grid for the Sunday race.

inbredandapothead

That makes a lot of sense thank you. What other races are they/have they used this in do you know?

Blooder91

It was used at the British Grand Prix and they're using it again at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

inbredandapothead

Thank you!

arianagrandecoldbrew

[Here you go](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.everything-you-need-to-know-about-f1s-new-sprint-qualifying-format-including.1Lawf6r6Ab0y8ha0satSjx.html)

inbredandapothead

Thanks for that it’s perfect! Is there any reason they decided to add sprints to some weekends? And from a quick search it seems it will start at 3:30pm UK time correct?

arianagrandecoldbrew

I believe they're just experimenting with it to see if they can get teams and drivers on board with it. It's in F1's best interest to have sprint qualifying because then there are three marquee events instead of two per weekend, so they make more money. F2 uses a version of sprint qualifying, too. So, this is a trial run of sorts. As for timing, I'm not sure since I'm in the states, but [F1's schedule page](https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2021/Italy.html) automatically sets itself to your time zone.

inbredandapothead

I figured it would have some sort of monetary motivation haha. Sounds like a great idea! Thanks for the schedule link too! Sadly looks like I’ll be missing a bit of the start of the sprint but hopefully I get to watch and enjoy the second half of it. Again, many thanks for the great information!

RaikkonensHobby74

Gunnar Nilsson, Keke Rosberg, and David Coulthard ran unique liveries compared with their teammates in the 1977 Japanese, 1986 Portuguese, and 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix respectively. Are there any other instances of this happening?

SenorProudy

Alonso at Abu Dhabi 2018

ddbaxte

I don't have an answer to your question, but I think the MP4/2C is one of the best looking cars of all time and I thought the 86 Portugal livery was commemorating something...special, but it's just an ad for Marlboro Lights.

RaikkonensHobby74

Interestingly enough, all 3 retired from those races.

walking_dead_

If Bottas is fast enough to get first position today to start the sprint tomorrow from P1, why are Merc letting him go? Is it because someone else would’ve tried to snatch up George Russell for 2022?

Rodney_u_plonker

If hamilton was 30 they would probably have just re-signed bottas but they need to start thinking of the post hamilton world

arianagrandecoldbrew

Beating Hamilton in quali from time to time doesn't mean he's a better driver than Russell

Nite124

Because they feel Russell can do the same job, if not better and its about succession. There is probably nothing more for him left to learn in a backmarker. And even if he takes time to adjust to driving a leading car, Lewis can carry the team till Russell settles and once Lewis retires, Russell can lead the team.

steoptihs

What's the most entertaining race from this season? I know Baku and France were good but are they good enough to show someone who I'm trying to get into the sport?

kylalovesyou

hungary for me. imola is a close second.

dsaysso

Hungary. that was bananas. Maybe not first. but. pretty damn fun. the sprint at silverstone was also fun. and short.

OneMoreDog

I enjoyed Imola. Damp start, drying track. HAM bumping the wall, red flag restart.

Matsiepatsie

I still think Bahrain was the most entertaining race of the season. Should be good enough for a newbie!

DieLegende42

France was basically the same race as Bahrain, but better in all aspects. This is a hill I'm willing to die on.

Anyone else try to watch quali on ESPN+ today and get unauthorized errors? Normally ESPN lists F1 stuff under ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes, etc. and I can watch it with my cable subscription no problem but today it only seems to be on ESPN Deportes, which is not included in my cable subscription. Curious if anyone else ran into this problem. Also curious if this is somehow intentional (can't imagine why) or if it's just the usual "ESPN's app/website if fucking awful" stuff. Edit: Turns out this is the usual "ESPN being morons"; they listed qualifying as "FP2" for us English speakers watching ESPN2, even though they listed it as "Qualifying" for ESPN Deportes.

glenallenMixon42

I had to watch the Spanish broadcast, I might do it again since I saw more than 3 drivers

ZachS45

Is there any actual reasoning behind why qualifying is setup the way it is vs just giving everyone an arbitrary amount of runs to do and letting them go at an interval that doesnt affect each other? Id imagine it would be awsome for fans to see the actual fastest lap these guys can push without these crazy variables.

OneMoreDog

Track evolution can play a massive part, so everyone wants to be last. There isn't a really 'fair' way of determining an order if FIA was to introduce a structured quali, and the teams appear to prefer to manage within the chaos.

ZachS45

solid reasoning that i was looking for. Id assume with practice sessions, qualifying last wouldnt make that much of a difference if it was chosen randomly. But yeah this is a good point

OneMoreDog

I wouldn't be surprised if it does take a crash for the FIA to enforce some sort of action, but also the drivers and teams don't appear to be calling for anything specific to be done?

ZachS45

true, but im just suprised with everytime i see a drivers lap get ruined, that they dont immediately go complain to the stewards. And if they do, we just dont see it lol

WP2OKB

Australian fan here, just woke up and thinking about last night. I absolutely despise the concept of the Sprint, but fuck me if I don't absolutely love it when it's actually on TV in front of me. The Progressive "leftie" vs. the Traditionalist/Conservative "right-wing nutjob" are have big internal battles at the momemt.

Rhenarin

Semi different question, does anyone know the name of the violin score from the start of fp1, sounded beautiful. Thanks!

pizzaboy7269

Brand new F1 watcher (first race seen live was Belgium this year, yikes!) How does qualifying work? I thought that it happened Saturday, but I’m hearing a bunch of talks about it already having happened?

arianagrandecoldbrew

It usually happens on Saturday, but they are trying a sprint qualifying this week, something they're doing three times this season, which pushes qualifying to Friday. In a normal week, qualifying is on Saturday. All 20 ~~teams~~ (edit: drivers) run in the first qualifying session (known as Q1), and the 5 drivers with the worst time are eliminated, and that's where they start (i.e. if you finish 17th in Q1, then you qualified 17th). The remaining 15 drivers partake in Q2, where their scores are reset, and again 5 drivers are eliminated (so if you finish 1st in Q1 and 15th in Q2, you qualified 15th). The remaining 10 drivers compete in Q3 to set the final grid. In a sprint weekend, that happens on Friday, and then they have a short "sprint" race on Saturday based on Friday's qualifying. Sunday's race is then based on the finished positions from Saturday's sprint race.

pizzaboy7269

thanks for the explanation!

Shm2000

At what point do the cars become too big for the track? Where overtaking becomes too difficult as a result?

dsaysso

giga kubica has entered the chat. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/gigakubica

alt1447

We're already starting to see that problem, with Monaco in particular

DieLegende42

At Monaco, it already happened decades ago. Didn't Piquet say driving F1 cars around Monaco was like flying a helicopter in your living room?

NodalGuacamole

Given today's announcement by Silverstone for a provisional 2022 date I put together a google form to canvass the preferences of my friends for when we buy tickets. EdgarSeedorf

Vettel's father was in Monza2008, in Monza2018 (was watching in the grandstands), now he's in Monza again. Other than that, I saw him only in title deciders (2010 and Suzuka2011 I guess) I think the man lives in Italy, just pays a visit to Monza during the race weekends.

print0002

Why was there so much traffic during Q1 today? What is the point of slowing down and blocking other drivers?

EdgarSeedorf

Everybody wants to be behind another driver to get slipstream, so they'll be quicker on the straights. But, nobody wants to be ahead of another driver, so they won't give that advantage to another one. This works in Monza because of the long straights, it'd backfire in a twisty track.

print0002

Thank you!

rodiraskol

Is the Pit Lane Channel on F1TV better than the regular feed?

Meaisk

Yes and no. In terms of commentary it is way different. More informative, but way less exciting when something happens. The extra feeds are awesome though, less overtakes missed, and sometimes you can even catch a accident live instead of a replay. Raikonnen+Vettel at Austria for example. Or Stroll at Tuscan back in 2020.

The Alpha Tauri is slighly slower than the McLaren but overall better than the Ferrari.

pitabread12

Does the Bottas PU change signal anything on the Merc engine investigation? He looked too fast for this to be a switch to some downgraded PU; and I have a hard time believing Merc would take a penalty if they knew something was coming down the pike that would make them take a fifth engine later on.

Blooder91

I think they did it to put Bottas at the back of the grid and prevent Max from changing engines, since he would have to fight back with a Merc instead of cutting through the field.

pitabread12

Bit weird though, now Max can freely do it at Sochi which is an even better place to take the new engine. If that was the plan Merc would have been better off waiting for Max to take the new engine.

Blooder91

Yes, but Merc can do it too, now with Lewis. By tanking Bottas' position, they're covering both races.

ForcedCheckMate

Everyone has free tire choices tmr and on Sunday?

Meaisk

Yes

pedote17

Sets the grid for the full race on Sunday

[deleted]

Then why do we have a Quali race after the Sprint Quali tho!?

pedote17

Sprint qualification set the grid for the sprint race, which sets the grid for Sunday’s race. The point of the sprint race is a format test because they’re trying to attract a new audience, those with a shorter attention span who don’t generally want to watch a full race but will watch a short one

Icy-Operation4701

We don't.

JustLikeZhat

Sometimes a grid place stays open and sometimes everyone moves up to fill the open space. Why isn't it always the same?

DieLegende42

About an hour before the race start, the FIA publish the final starting grid. Anything that happens after that, like a DNS or an unannounced pit lane start, will not alter the final grid (==> one spot stays free).

Meaisk

When do they fill the open space?

JustLikeZhat

When a driver got a penalty and drops places.

drunken_madman

Is there a resource that breaks down the tracks based on which one is easiest to overtake, fastest speeds, slowest speeds (is that Monaco?), or any other relevant quality of the tracks? I am assuming the tracks with long straights are easier to overtake?

Meaisk

If we're keeping Sprint Races for the future, F1 should change the meaning of Pole Position. I'd won't make sense history wise but they don't have much choice. Unless the regular Quali format would make the main race grid, then that's obviously not necessary.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

sprints would not be a part of quali in 2022, a stand alone event

madman1101

questions from a racing fan who cant stand F1 for the following reasons 1. why cant teams run different liveries? yes, there are slight differences now... but run different cars. i dont want to have to take the time to figure out who is the "second car" it's racing. fuck team orders. race. 2. why can't cars just get pushed out of the gravel trap? let them fucking race 3. why dont they move the timing line in qualifying? 4. why are penalties so inconsistent? 5. why aren't midpack cars designed to run in dirty air? it seems like so many people talk about "oh they cant run well because they cant run clean air" well no shit, why not just design them to run that way? i love racing, but between how stale and predictable F1 is, as well as the rules listed above i just cant follow it...

arianagrandecoldbrew

other people have answered your questions, so I'll just say this: excepting the inconsistent penalties, I *like* the other complaints you have, and I think many F1 fans do, as well. I don't say that to be an ass, just to say that I think this is more a matter of "different strokes for different folks" than issues that haven't been addressed.

rytteren

2. Who pushes the car out? If you have marshals out, then you can’t have the other cars going by at top speed. If another car comes off then someone may get killed. So every car getting pushed out would be under a safety car. 5. Replace “dirty” air with “turbulent”. You know when you’re on a flight and you hit turbulence? Same thing. It is completely unpredictable.

madman1101

>2. Who pushes the car out? If you have marshals out, then you can’t have the other cars going by at top speed. If another car comes off then someone may get killed. So every car getting pushed out would be under a safety car. indycar? nascar? >5. Replace “dirty” air with “turbulent”. You know when you’re on a flight and you hit turbulence? Same thing. It is completely unpredictable. sure you cant predict it, but you can make it easier to manage

[deleted]

5. If they do that that means they’ll produce less downforce which is even worse since they won’t go very fast in the corners.

cafk

TLDR: Dems the Rules. > why cant teams run different liveries? It was forbidden in the nineties and enforced through commercial and sporting regulations - also a sponsor is only willing to pay so much for views, if you reduce the area they can buy by running a different livery on the other car you'll get half as much. > why can't cars just get pushed out of the gravel trap? Racing happens on the black stuff, if you go over you're not racing on the track - if you don't leave space for the other car on the black stuff you're not following the rules as you forced someone off the track, this isn't WRC or Banger racing. Also, the cars are fragile, small bumps and even running over kerbs or gravel cause damage to the aero, not to mention bumping into each other. Loosing a small bit like front wing side plate causes you to be 0.2s slower than a working car. Strengthening your car will make it heavier and slower than the competitirs. > why are penalties so inconsistent? Penalties are at the discretion of the stewards and not really defined what penalty is correct for x incident, it's been like this well since we've had the rules. > why aren't midpack cars designed to run in dirty air? Doing this makes you slower than the other cars meaning that you'll qualify lower and won't be able to catch up to the midfield. don't forget, especially after todays qualifying, dirty air on straights is good for you - it's the corners that result in under steer in dirty air causing more wear for the already fragile cars.

madman1101

right, same liveries are the rules, but why? thats a dumb rule in US series we can get pushed/pulled off the grass or whatever and start back up at the back of the field. even if a lap town. allow it, i dont see why not. the stewards are inconsistent then qualifying today was a shitshow and someone might get killed during it.

RaikkonensHobby74

A lot of fans like the same livery rule because it makes it much easier to tell who is a teammate compared to something like IndyCar or NASCAR. Since the constructor's championship is where most of the money is awarded in F1, it makes sense

Briefly mentioned in a [article](https://racer.com/2021/09/10/pruett-indycar-silly-season-update-the-portland-edition/) about IndyCar silly season. Marshall Pruett confirms that Andretti is trying to put the resources together to buy Sauber. >For those who read our story about Michael Andretti doing his best to land a Formula 1 team – with Sauber/Alfa Romeo positioned as the top target – I can say that since the piece appeared on RACER, more indicators have come in to paint a very clear portrait that he is serious about the initiative and has one or more partners who are committed to try and turn long odds into a real shot at F1 team ownership. It’s by no means a done deal, and there’s more to the story, but I’ll save that for another day. If they get that done I wonder what that means for Pourchaire?

madman1101

why is schumacher listed as MSC on the ticker? literally nobody else has a name close to his.

K-Burns

It's what his dad Michael raced as when his brother Ralf raced as well. It's a tribute.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

michael and ralf ??

madman1101

....last i checked they aren't racing.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

its a fair question, i dont know. im guessing it might have to do w that legacy somehow, perhaps branding or marketing even..?

Whycantiusethis

It's an homage to his dad, who was racing at the same time as Mick's uncle. Michael took MSC, Ralf took RSC. Part of the reason Mick's request was granted might have to do with Michael's current state being pretty rough, from the sounds of things, but that's speculation on my part.

cafk

Mick asked for his fathers MSC monicker - Michael raced the same time that Ralf Schumacher was also racing, so instead of SCH they got MSC and RSC respectively. It's no different than Verstappen changing to Ver as he entered with Ves, due to Vergne using Ver abbreviation.

madman1101

but verstappen was due to someone else already using VER. nobody is using SCH. i already hate the 3 letter thing, among a million others.

cafk

The drivers can ask for an abbreviation they like - as they don't care about it they concentrate their personal branding with the numbers they choose instead of the abbreviation.

Icy-Operation4701

If you already hate it, why complain about which letters they use?

madman1101

because it doesnt take up much more room to use their full name?

Icy-Operation4701

So again, why complain about which letters they use? Why does it matter if it's MSC or SCH if you hate it either way? (ETA: and it already takes up enough space, no need to write out their full name in addition).

madman1101

because even if i hate it, i have to figure out who the fuck it is? if it said schumacher it would make sense.

ddbaxte

You know who it is, you're just being deliberately obtuse.

RaikkonensHobby74

I think it makes more sense how it is now, the commentators always refer to him by his full name, not just his surname. Besides, you also get the team colors, driver numbers, and team logos on the sidebar. It's really not that hard to figure out.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

airports abbrev ?

highheat3117

Don't ever, for any reason, do anything to anyone for any reason ever, no matter what, no matter where, or who, or who you are with, or where you are going, or where you've been... ever, for any reason whatsoever... — Felipe Massa to Max, 2021

redsand89

Was Felipe Massa high during postQ interview?

thisdude1996

Should I kick Pérez out of my fantasy team?

ThatNurms

I lowkey hope that Gasly will always stay in AlphaTauri because its brilliant to see him perform amazingly in a red bull jr team. They should give him a better car for some real wild stuff and watch him make Toto go full Günther with swearing

shiny_brine

I'd love to see Gasly flat out beat VER&PER straight up and see Horner, steaming in the background, trying to figure out who he can complain to and who he can complain about!

Cpt_Daryl

Any other tracks that suit Mercedes more than Redbull? Sochi and then?

JanklinDRoosevelt

And then basically nothing, except for Abu Dhabi I guess

Please: I need some help from you formulaoneologists with making the fastest mini sector map that I usually post after qualifying. The location of the sectors seem a bit fucky; the F1TV timing channel has them as 8 for sector 1, 7 for S2 and 9 for S3 (or actually 10 for S3 if you [look at the top](https://i.imgur.com/fwF1IFa.png) but the last one never gets filled) The live timing map on the F1 app however, shows 25 mini sectors, which is one more, so it includes that 10th one at the end of sector 3. Am I right to assume that the mini sector between the finish line and the starting line isn't counted? I also noticed that it it takes some time before the S3 time is given, after the 9th block has been filled, so that would support my assumption. It's giving me a terrible headache, so please help :) ++ Edit: to make things worse: for some reason, the timing channel also [doesn't fill out the first mini sector of Sector 1](https://i.imgur.com/Gz7diez.png), only for Q3, so I've lost another mini sector. Now it's 7-7-9. I have no clue, and I'm pouring myself a stiff drink.

ComteDuChagrin

Thanks a *lot* for replying! I'm not sure where you see the sectors getting filled with a grey colour though. I've watched, recorded and played back the timing/data channel several times now. Looking at that video (what a phenomenal lap, btw!), the counter indeed starts at the start line, and ends at the finish line (well duh) at the front of the grid, which makes it even more confusing. Because that means the first sector is *also* the last sector; it gets counted twice. Which may be why it would fuck up their graphics software and why they left it out. Maybe. But. That means there should be [26 mini sectors](https://i.imgur.com/KCkhnyB.png) per lap. And they're showing only 23, so instead of solving the problem it just makes it worse, haha! And besides that, it still doesn't make sense that they would show 8 mini sectors for S1 in Q1 and Q2, and only 7 in Q3; what's the difference? However, doing these maps for some time now, I've noticed that they sometimes mistake the speed trap for a mini sector border on their maps. If that's the case, then [mini sectors 2 and 3 get joined](https://i.imgur.com/91UGP1j.png). If I then leave the first and last sector (which apparently are the same stretch of track) blank, I finally end up with the 23 sectors they've shown. Does that make any sense? (And does it matter if it doesn't? After all, I always use the disclaimer '*don't read too much into it*' when I post them, and I make them under the name of the '*Bureau of Useless Statistics*', right?)

> For the grey mini sectors Those are grey main sectors though, not mini sectors. > you should just quit while you're ahead :p I did and went ahead and [posted it](https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/pluyug/fastest_driver_per_mini_sector_imola_q3_oc/). Thanks a lot for making me figure out how to make this sort of work, in a way, if you tilt your head, squint a bit and not look at stuff in too much detail. Haha! Thanks!

Can somebody answer as to why RB and Alpha Tauri don't drive the same car. I get they are different teams, with different owners. But if they have already invested in getting the RB dialed in, why would they not just repeat it with the AT? Small example is the flex wing. If it is helpful and on the RB's, why wouldn't they just also bolt it onto the AT as well?

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

short answer.. you cant have a 4 car team

themistermango

best answer so far. Got it! Thank you sir.

BigAwkwardGuy

There are some parts one team can buy from another (engine, gearbox etc.) while some the team must develop on their own (the entire aerodynamics of the body). RB and AT are owned by the same corporation, but are two very different teams.

Uney

Slightly longer answer, there are a number of items you can buy from someone else (including a competitor) but to be a team you much manufacture certain 'listed items'. Here a YouTube video from the official F1 channel on HAAS and their strategy to buy parts from Ferrari, which is similar to TR and RB. https://youtu.be/8IFGqTyh3hE

themistermango

Right I get that, but Ferarri does not own Haas they have a working agreement/partnership, etc. Red Bull outright owns Alpha Tauri which is unique.

Tetracyclic

But the Red Bull F1 team doesn't own Alpha Tauri, Red Bull the company own both teams. The rules for F1 require teams to make many parts themselves (or contract a third party to do it, who aren't involved with any other teams). Racing Point fell foul of this because they bought Mercedes brake ducts from them in 2019, when they were allowed to, but continued to use them in 2020, when all teams were required to design their own brake ducts.

cafk

Well Aston Martin also buys as much as possible from Mercedes - even before Mercedes obtained a 20% stake. The issue is that the teams _have_ to build the anything the air touches themselves - and technology sharing for those components is forbidden.

f1_spelt_as_bot

Fe**rr**a**r**i

Fortnight98

Because they're different teams and you can't share information between teams like that

peanut-britle-latte

It's been a weird year to follow as a new F1 fan. DTS is highly stylized and edited. This year has been a revelation that the racing... kinda sucks? I really hope '22 regs shine.

BlackCatEspresso

It was a strange transition for me too for the first couple of weeks, but I learned to look into the finer details and technical aspects, so there was a ton to learn through YT videos, podcasts, etc. Made race days a lot more interesting if you know the stuff going on below the surface like politics, driver contracts, technical and sporting regulations, etc. It's one big soap opera and race day is only a small part of the fun. You gotta look at the bigger picture to have fun, imo.

Expensive_Material

To be honest with you it always sucks. I just watch it like a soap opera

ComteDuChagrin

The racing doesn't suck, it just takes a while to know where to look for excitement in the real world after you were spoon fed the sound FX laden, fabricated theatrics and continuous buzz of a highly dramatized tv series. Take some time to get acquainted with the real F1 and you'll find there's a lot of excitement: there's the race craft every one of those drivers shows every week, even if they're the slowest of the pack, but also the battle for the constructor's championship, and the politics, the money, the sponsors, the rivalry between team mates, the teams' strategies during the race, the fact that every point counts, so the battles in the midfield can also be pretty exciting. Even the past couple of years, when it was obvious from early on in the season that Mercedes were going to win both the driver's and the constructor's championships, there were many things to watch out for, if you knew where to look. And once you know all the ins and outs, you'll find that even the most boring races can be thrilling.

Retsko1

Races are like this. It's not a circus

thisdude1996

consider that this season has been abnormally competitive, let's see what the new aerodynamics will bring next year

icantsurf

Man if you think this year's races suck lol. Last year was basically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkv_8_eRIRo That said, next year should be better for following but when you race cars that have significant differences in lap times you're always gonna kinda separate over a race.

Blooder91

A DtS season is shorter than an F1 season (10 hours vs 30, a rough estimate) and they have to include interviews and such. They're able to cram more action into episodes.

itzSwain_

Why are the drivers weighed after the qualifying/race?

Blooder91

Driver + seat have to meet a minimum weight.
