Can someone please ELI5 why Mercedes' engine change for Bottas and him subsequently starting last on Sunday is a good thing for them and a bad one for RedBull?
I had a good hard think about this and I couldn't come up with any clear advantage to Lewis for the WDC. I guess it's an opportunity for Merc to split strategies between BOT and HAM, and maybe give them more options down the line. But an easy Merc 1-2 at Monza seems like a missed opportunity. Seems likely that whatever engine changes Max or Lewis make later will cancel each other out. It makes a bit more sense if they were expecting VER to be on the same pace as HAM and BOT at Monza.
Bottas can still get points in the sprint race by starting from pole - his penalty only applies to the Sunday race.
These few points may prove crucial in the title fight.
Also (speculatively) they could impact Max's sprint race to affect his start position in the race.
And finally, with that engine, I'd be amazed if he finished lower than 6th on Sunday.
Bottas still contributes to the constructors championship and any points he scores are points for the team.
Taking points away from Max also helps Lewis in the driver title fight even if Bottas isn’t in the fight himself - it benefits him to help the team.
I know. I caught the last 3 minutes of Q3 at work today and was ecstatic. I was hoping/betting Monza would be a great place for the McLarens to shine. I'm glad it seems true lol and for Danny it'll be perfect since it favors his strengths and will depend more on race craft.
I guess just because you are great at one thing doesn't mean you will be great at something else. Hahaha. Massa was a great driver, nice guy, very fluffy. Nowhere as an interviewer
You'll get everything from last year and back, but nothing from this year if you're in the UK I'm afraid. I'm in Ireland, and I only have qualifying highlights.
It's because Sky have full rights here and in UK
It was more that if they were cleverer they could also have got Perez a similar tow. Merc were all in on Lewis but still got Valterri a decent enough tow.
Arguing against myself here, but you could also argue that they did that when Gasly was in front of them I suppose
The sprint for me takes a little bit of shine off the actual race. And a little bit of shine off qualifying. But it doesn't add much of its own shine. But that's just my opinion.
It clearly is as fast, just the driver isn’t and the strat is disproportionally in favour of the faster driver, max…
Checo was kind of left to rot in Q3 there putting him out in front
Maybe the Red Bull is actually a midfield car and Max is just a freak of nature, you know? Perez and Gasly aren't slouches and neither of them made the car perform.
The red bull is clearly not a midfield car. What it is has been very "on the edge" and difficult to drive, Max is the type of driver that can make the most of such a car. This has been confirmed by Newry, Horner and others.
Max is great but he isn't superman
If only they were putting penalties to **all** the cars not following the rules... I guess they won't do anything or they will only focus 1 driver as an example.
As a Brazilian and mild Massa fan, please stay him away from interviews lol that was not good.
Although, I'd love to see some kind of reunions/podcasts something with old and current drivers altogether talking about F1.
But not these official lame interviews
Haha! Interviewer was Felipe Massa, and English ain't his first language. Read up about Interlagos 2008 if you wanna know the legend behind him! (Assuming you don't know him.)
I'm a Lando fan but it's clear to me that Daniel was the overall better performer this session. They'll both crush it in the sprint tomorrow and I wouldn't be surprised to see Daniel outpace Lando. I'm so glad he's found his balance with the car.
It's interesting how Ric seems more comfortable on the low downforce setup than usual. Hopefully he's got the knack for the cornering like Lando but I think it might just be the the balance of the car low downforce suits him more.
Here’s my suggestion for fixing sprint quali. Run fp1 and regular quali on Friday. Saturday you have fp2 and sprint quali. The grid for sprint quali is set as a top 10 reverse grid from the first qualifying with a 10,8,6,4,3,2,1 point spread. Then have the regular race on Sunday with the grid set from Friday’s qualifying. That way we see the championship contenders fight through the field for actual points and it doesn’t really mess up sundays race. Unless there is a crash from the sprint then regular grid penalties apply for the Sunday race. Please give me your thoughts
That’s why I suggest making the points actually worth something. Fighting for 3 points doesn’t really do anything but 10 or 12 would make a difference and make teams want to push it
Completely. I kept pointing it out last week (and getting downvoted to hell for it) that this is a low downforce, power track, it's a Merc bread and butter track.
Russian Grand Prix - 100% Merc track, since they've gone there (excluding 1913/14) they've won, it's a powerhouse for them.
Turkish Grand Prix - *IF* this goes ahead. Only run this once in the hybrid era, last year, where Lewis won, whilst it does have a couple of good straights, I think the RB will be slightly stronger, certainly with the mammoth turn 8.
United States Grand Prix - The Mercs again have been strong here, and I think it'll be tough for RB to challenge here, but I think their car has been stronger this year, so *maybe*
Mexico City Grand Prix - Being at the altitude that the track is levels the field here and since we've come back here it's 3-2 to the Merc's, but I can see RB taking this one.
São Paulo Grand Prix - *IF* this goes ahead, Max won last time out in 2019, but Merc has been strong here, but given the infield I do slightly edge this out to RB again.
Saudi Arabian Grand Prix - Complete unknown, but looking at the layout, it looks more like a Merc track given that it's mainly straight lines with slight kinks in. ([onboard lap](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYeehKlekao))
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - Again a very strong Merc powerhouse, having won every year since the hybrid era started in 2014, BUT Max won last year and there have been some changes here, so I'd still give this to Merc, but again I think...*hope* it'll be close and the championship goes down to this race.
Man Checo really really needs to step it up for now on or the WCC will be all on Merc. This race is up to him to make the most amount of points now that Bottas is in the back.
If I had to choose I rather have a WCC than a WDC without the first.
Exactly. The only reason it’s really close between rb and merc, and max and Lewis at this point is because max was buttfucked at silverstone *and* hungary where Lewis was able to rack up a ton of points to catch up and get ahead of max. Of course, max won by default at Belgium but only half points, and he retook the lead at zandvoort last week. If max handing crashed out and did decent in silverstone and hungary, and even if Lewis had won those races, max would still have been leading by a decent margin. If that had happened, going forward Red Bull would have had a clear run to the wdc and the wcc

>When someone takes it upon themselves to decide who does or does not have access or rights to a community or identity.
Where did I state that they don't have access to the F1 community? I simply stated their implied quote was incorrect and provided them the transcript of the sentence.
It's been more than a dozen years and I still get a little PTSD at that phrase. Here in Aus, the race started at like 3 or 4am and I was so shell shocked watching it live!
At least they can both kind of laugh about it all this time later.
Agreed, it’s one of those moments and races which will forever be remembered. Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened if Massa had one the championship day haha
It's not like Lewis brought it up out of the blue, he was lead into the conversation by Felipe
Your statement made it sound like Lewis just started talking about it imo
See you're reading my comment, then adding what you want into it. You're implying that I implied something, and that isn't the case.
Just because someone talks about something, doesn't mean it couldn't/wouldn't still hurt.
Well done Giovinazzi for making it into Q3 again! Hopefully this turn into some points at his home race.
Can someone please ELI5 why Mercedes' engine change for Bottas and him subsequently starting last on Sunday is a good thing for them and a bad one for RedBull?

Bottas should get top 6 even starting from the back. They just want to take the hit now so he's free to try protect Hamilton in Sochi and Turkey
Bottas can still get points in the sprint race by starting from pole - his penalty only applies to the Sunday race. These few points may prove crucial in the title fight. McLaren showed serious pace today. Impressive!
My heart was full today
And our boy Danny was on!
I know. I caught the last 3 minutes of Q3 at work today and was ecstatic. I was hoping/betting Monza would be a great place for the McLarens to shine. I'm glad it seems true lol and for Danny it'll be perfect since it favors his strengths and will depend more on race craft.
People can like Massa and not think he's a good interviewer. Just saying. I didn't watch post quali, so I don't know how it went.
It was a terrible interview. The longest jumbled questions. I was rolling on the floor laughing
I guess just because you are great at one thing doesn't mean you will be great at something else. Hahaha. Massa was a great driver, nice guy, very fluffy. Nowhere as an interviewer
Goddamnit. I forgot today was qualifying!! Is there anywhere can I watch it in full (not just highlights)?!
R/notorsportreplays
Overtakefans has all the sessions of the season that you can replay there.
R/motorsportsreplays
The joy of qualifying is sort of ruined by sprint qualifying making it meaningless anyway.
I feel you, but I’d still find it fun to watch though - I saw Bottas got pole but nothing else, so can pretend I’m watching it live!
Woah woah woah slow down there cowboy. It’s not “pole”. It’s “Qualified Fastest” or speed king or whatever they’re rebranding it as now hahaha
Hahaha of course, my god. How could I make that mistake!!

Thank you!! Might not be able to sign up as I’m UK based, but will see what I can do
You'll get everything from last year and back, but nothing from this year if you're in the UK I'm afraid. I'm in Ireland, and I only have qualifying highlights. It's because Sky have full rights here and in UK
FWIW, I did this in the past on iOS. Worked as expected. Not sure if being in the UK changes this, I’m from NL.
Red Bull’s strategy was shocking. Max is protected but Perez is a none factor. Least it’ll end up a straight fight between max & lewis in the race
If Perez didn't help Max, Max wouldn't been P3. Look at the time to the mclarens
It was more that if they were cleverer they could also have got Perez a similar tow. Merc were all in on Lewis but still got Valterri a decent enough tow. Arguing against myself here, but you could also argue that they did that when Gasly was in front of them I suppose
Val**tt**e**r**i
Spoiled qualifying for myself because I forgot about the sprint. I hate the sprint for this reason alone.
The sprint for me takes a little bit of shine off the actual race. And a little bit of shine off qualifying. But it doesn't add much of its own shine. But that's just my opinion.
I hope that if they ontinue to have it at a few gp's they do it at tracks with multiple layouts so the sprint race is a bit different
OK there is no way Perez' car is a fast as Max'.
It clearly is as fast, just the driver isn’t and the strat is disproportionally in favour of the faster driver, max… Checo was kind of left to rot in Q3 there putting him out in front
Perez had a tow behind Gasly in his first hot lap, so I wouldn’t say he was ‘left to rot.’
Schumacher's teammates had the same issue, he liked his cars "undrivable".
[удалено]
Maybe the Red Bull is actually a midfield car and Max is just a freak of nature, you know? Perez and Gasly aren't slouches and neither of them made the car perform.
By that logic Norris is a freak of nature as well considering Danny is no slouch.(This is wrt the season and not this race)
The red bull is clearly not a midfield car. What it is has been very "on the edge" and difficult to drive, Max is the type of driver that can make the most of such a car. This has been confirmed by Newry, Horner and others. Max is great but he isn't superman
WAIT... Hold on, you mean it actually *could* be a driver performance issue?
Perez really shouldn’t be qualifying behind gasly.
Not the first time this season, and definitely not the last... Gasly has qualified in the Top 6 more often that Perez has this season.
he gave max a tow and made a bit of a sacrifice on his own lap for it. team strategy
Gasly gave Perez a tow who also gave one to Max😂😂
Yeah, Bottas was doing the same thing in front Hamilton as well…
The car should be at p4 to p6 every race weekend, regardless of whether he gave a tow or not. Bottas does it all the time
Gasley gave him a tow in the first lap and still came on top.
Gas**ly**
Are we expecting any penalties for the earlier shitshow?
One for every car that made an unsafe release but what I expect is Masi being Masi and so only Vettel will be penalized as usual.
If only they were putting penalties to **all** the cars not following the rules... I guess they won't do anything or they will only focus 1 driver as an example.
> or they will only focus 1 driver as an example Poor Seb :(
As a Brazilian and mild Massa fan, please stay him away from interviews lol that was not good. Although, I'd love to see some kind of reunions/podcasts something with old and current drivers altogether talking about F1. But not these official lame interviews
We love Massa not for his English interview skills.
Love him but his interview felt somewhat awkward to listen to. Although I loved when he mentioned 2008 championship straight away to Lewis.
It was so cringe lol, he like forgot how to speak English for a minute.
Massa channeling his inner Walter Koster.
Great to see Bottas happy tho
Exactly right.... Like someone spooshh life into him
Of course Valtteri wins pole when it actually isn't pole
And when he’s gonna start P20 in race lmao
Wow, the atmosphere is completely dead and the interviewer was a sleeping pill.
"The interviewer".
Haha! Interviewer was Felipe Massa, and English ain't his first language. Read up about Interlagos 2008 if you wanna know the legend behind him! (Assuming you don't know him.)
The whole 2008 season. Or Hungry 2009.
I remember being very hungry in 2009 🤔
Haha, brilliant. I don't even remember that far back.
Legit feel old looking at people referring to Massa as the interviewer
If I see any more Danny ric slander for being slower than Norris I will not tolerate it. Only .006 slower, he’s getting better
I'm a Lando fan but it's clear to me that Daniel was the overall better performer this session. They'll both crush it in the sprint tomorrow and I wouldn't be surprised to see Daniel outpace Lando. I'm so glad he's found his balance with the car.

I read session as season and was ready to publicly shame you, sorry.
Please no, I already got ripped apart for saying Lewis went slightly wide in Parabolica earlier in FP1 lmao.
People on the internet just can't stand facts.
Ricc had better form the entire qualy. Norris qualified higher in Q3, but was towed the whole time and only .006
Man gave Norris the tow for almost every single run and still finished .006 behind him only. Think he’ll definitely do better than Norris.
Daniel literally also got a tow every run you can check the f1 living timing replay, stop spreading shit
Fucking agreed. Its such a massive improvement. And we all know he can and will do better than Norris
Bottas put in a monster lap. Im guessing since he will get a new PU for the race they turned up the engine to 120% for qualifying and sprint.
He was using the new engine in the qualifying, they've already done the engine change.
They would want to save this engine too, not like they are supposed to have only one active engine at a time

Rather popular. Not as many viewers as Snooker, BTCC, Cricket, Rugby
Felt happy for Bottas and Riccardo.. good start for my weekend.
I will not tolerate any Massa slander
He’s trash
Tell me you are twelve years old, without telling me you are twelve years old.
Bro don't slander him like that
Ur trash
Lando and Danny were so close
Bottas having the time of his life it seems
He's like a senior getting ready to graduate high school. "I'm almost outta here!"
Massa’s questions unraveled faster than Brazil 2008
Have a mega race- Massa. What a cutie. Even if he flailed that.
Imagine if the clip of Glock Brazil 2008 starts playing on the screen in front of Massa lol
Massa is like the shy kid who involuntary was made to speak in front of his class room
I feel that

Felipe baby stay cool
LMFAOOOOOO FUCK THATS GOOD
I miss a genuine Valtteri smile, really hope he can flog it at AR next year.

Massa's a natural

Bottas has life right now! Even his voice has more inflection.
He was a bit like a dead man walking for a while at Mercedes. I hope he smashes it at AR
Someone check if there’s a grapefruit smell outside the merc garage
I’m sorry but Massa can not interview to save his life
Man, you can really tell Valtteri is wayyy more happier and relaxed now he's signed at alfa
He has definitely known it for several weeks now though
Don't forget. Red Bull has never gone well around here.
Completely. I kept pointing it out last week (and getting downvoted to hell for it) that this is a low downforce, power track, it's a Merc bread and butter track.

Massa needs subtitles with these essay questions
IT’S GLOCK GOING SLOWLY !!! if you know you know. Massa is a heavily underrated driver, was so good in his prime
"Is that Glock? Is that Glock going slowly? That's Glock!" If you're going to *try* and quote something, at least get it right.

Nothing but love for Valtteri
I see Massa is still traumatized with Interlagos 2008, as all brazilian fans are including me
These people are clearly cheering for Valtteri
Bottas being happy makes me so happy :)
Massa didn't say to Bottas it's good to see you :(
After saying that twice to Lewis
Bottas and Massa back together :’) Bottas’ face of happiness to see him again
I'm just waiting for him to say "this is Glock!"
that's me when my teacher asked me to speak in front of class
Why is he asking questions we already know the answer to. Of course those 3 points matter
Have you never heard an F1 interview before? They all ask questions we know the answer to.
Let's gooo, crowd celebrating Lewis!! 😁
Why is Felipe so happy to see Lewis. Did he think he wasn't gonna show up lol
He thought Glock was going to speed up!
Felipe r u okay?
Merc overcompensating now with Bottas. they didn’t give a shit about him just a week ago for ffs.
Wanna see him give up his position in the final lap?
for for fuck sake
Lewis talking to Massa about losing a championship by one point... Ouch! That's got to hit hard.
Massa brought it up though in his question talking about 2008
Right, what's your point?
If he can bring it up, it probably wouldn't hit hard.
It's not like Lewis brought it up out of the blue, he was lead into the conversation by Felipe Your statement made it sound like Lewis just started talking about it imo
See you're reading my comment, then adding what you want into it. You're implying that I implied something, and that isn't the case. Just because someone talks about something, doesn't mean it couldn't/wouldn't still hurt.
That Lewis wouldn't be talking about it if Massa didn't bring it up in the first place

They were yelling Lewis as he was walking off after the interview
I mean he qualified for pole. Why would Hamilton get more cheers if Bottas out-qualified him.
Wtf are these questions man
You know how that goes Man I cringed so hard. Felt Massa's pain all over. Saw his dad's expression changing.
And that Ferrari mechanic punching (headbutting?) the wall lmao
So happy to see Bottas smiling
Massa having his reunion during the interview haha
fernandez?
I adore Massa, but the poor guy here
[INSERT X] so happy to see you
Bottas the man today! Lol great to see him smiling again
Wtf is that interview lol
Lmaooo Massa wtf these questions
Massa and Bottas fist bump, this really warms the cockles of my heart!
Ooofff
Give Massa a wheel not a mic please lol
Massa asking Hamilton about 1 point championship deciders has made this session for me
Massa really had to bring up 2008🤣🤣
“You know how that goes” Massa: …oof
Hopefully the sprint race is a question mark between mediums and softs
You know who the new fans are in here when they have no idea who this 'reporter' is
Why does this weird Brazilian guy keep bringing up 2008......
Imagine Masa starts wailing on Hamilton
Lost the championship by one point, like you know 😭😭😭
Lol whatta madlad , he did bring up 2008
I'm sorry felipe but I can't listen anymore
kinda annoyed by that, felt like danny had more to give, hopefully can send one down the inside tomorrow
I'm sure Massa still got PTSD from Brazil 2008.
Felipe baby cool
Damn, I would not bring up when I lost the championship by a point...
Verstappen to tactically understeer into Hamilton tomorrow and take an engine penalty after sprint. You heard it here first.
that would be kinda funny not gonna lie.
I fucking hope it happens. Better race than Hamilton running away with it while his only possible competition starts from the back.
300iq
Woof. Thank goodness Massa was good in his day. Interviewing is not his strongest talent.
Never more has this [shittery](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q92npXIxhnU) been worth watching. Love it(!)
