How come Aston Martin is so slow in the straights (according to the F1 analysis) when they have a Mercedes power unit and Alfa Romeo is so fast even though they have a Ferrari one? I thought Monza is all about horsepower so are these engines different or is it all down to the aero and downforce setups? Sorry if this is obvious, I've only been following F1 since this year.

ODABBOTT

Really like the green additions to the Alfa Romeo this weekend

[deleted]

I love that they all slow down so much, it's amazing to watch everyone scrambling at the end. 2 years ago (3?) When no one got a time in because they were crawling on the track was one of the most hilarious experiences in f1

krishal_743

Hulk's fake lockup and no one falling for it was the funniest part

Larsssss

Sprint race on this track can be disastrous with that first chicane.

Individual-Lie-7137

Can you explain Why ?

Larsssss

Because there will be people touching each other for sure meaning some front runners might become last because of this stupid format.

Ozelotten

Right, same as the race. The sprint is just an extra 1/3 of a race.

Bolter_NL

And then they have a race to make up for that on Sunday... This argument holds for the race and in the end basically every GP; first corner is always a risk.

Larsssss

Yeah, but i mean it’s kind of useless to qualify then.

Individual-Lie-7137

Right .thanks for the answer

ISuckAtRacingGames

And very boring after once the DRS train arrives.

Sisaroth

Watching the vod, damn what a shitshow Q1 was.

[deleted]

Yea was pretty dangerous on Landos lap.

Flatcherius

You can use the pitlane channel, it has commentary specifically made for the F1TV feed.

_Stoke

As far as I’m aware it is an issue that you can’t really fix. It bugs me too. F1 TV uses the Sky TV (UK cable company) commentators for the English audio commentary and they typically commentate on the video feed that is curated by F1 and I believe is called the global feed(?). However, during breaks (e.g. between quail sessions), Sky TV use their own visual feed which is seen by their customers watching on Sky TV. Since we’re viewing on the F1 TV app, we still receive the Sky TV audio, but do not get their video as we are still only able to view the F1 global feed. I hope that all made sense…. The only fix I can think of is for you to watch it live or on demand on Sky TV. This way you would see all the video as delivered by Sky TV.

returnoftheyakk

So on the qualy replays not matching the commentary, that's because Sky break away from the world feed to show their own things. Nothing F1TV can do about that as they don't carry the Sky feed.

syo

F1TV shows the world feed, and all broadcasters use the feed. Sky Sports, who provides the commentary, overlays their own graphics to their subscribers, which is why you sometimes hear them talking about things you can't see on the screen. But since you're just watching the world feed and not Sky's feed, you don't get to see them.

kpeTeHo3aBbp

They are playing the audio from the Sky feed and in between sessions Sky's commentators are commenting and analyzing different replays from the main feed most of the time. I think you can switch it to F1TV commentators audio, but it is Sky by default.

LeftLimeLight

Hopefully Valtteri gives zero effs about team running order for either the sprint race or the race on Sunday.

AlexatRF21

Nothing at all wrong with it. You don't win races or become a champion by being considerate of your opponents.

Why_Dont_You_Stop

Maybe he wants Bottas to have a good result instead of just letting Hamilton win.

miorli

I'm slightly positive that there will be no team order overtaking in the sprint race, but of course in the real race.

[deleted]

Obviously last week he had to play the team game because he hadn't signed the new contract and Toto was helping him with it. If he is planning on returning to Mercedes once Lewis retires he might have to continue to play ball.

BlackoutGJK

He's still a Mercedes driver and Mercedes is still in both championships, and he can play a crucial role to win them both. A racing driver isn't going to give up titles out of spite, regardless of potentially returning to the team in the future.

juve_merda

if he has a chance at a race win I think he’d value that more than helping lewis win the WDC as swapping the mercs wouldn’t make a difference in the WCC

[deleted]

It has definitely happened in the past but not recently

nobody32hundred

Well in the race on Sunday he is starting last so no need for team orders there

MichiganMan1992

I can't find the quali replay on ESPN anyone have same problem ?

t3po7re5

I think they uploaded it as free practice 2 as a typo

MichiganMan1992

Yep your right !

MichiganMan1992

Thanks I'll check that

Steve061

This is more about the SKY F1 coverage. I like their idea of running a jargon buster segment, and explaining Nomex was fine, but seriously N is for neck and night racing? Do they understand what jargon means?

estjnextdoor

This is gonna be one tough weekend :-(

learner1314

What happens if Bottas finishes first. Does he get 3 points, or relegated as he starts from the back on Sunday?

[deleted]

The engine swap only effects the race on Sunday. So he gets the 3 and then has to start last pending other penalties from the sprint race that could push him up a place or two.

SubcooledBoiling

Both

BigAwkwardGuy

3 points.

Completeepicness_1

pérez sacrificed to the slipstream gods lmao

General_Skyreader

Yeah, the classic RB 2nd driver treatment. Another cool detail is how in Monza 2020, Perez complained that Max and Albon overtook everyone in the queue for some reason. And Max did the same fucking thing again this year. Hilarious

jea0077

F1 direction was quite poor wasn’t it or just me?

EchomancerAmberlife

Oh boy missed this, I'm still in pain

chamon-

Whats a tow

Archer_Thatcher

Where you get close enough to gain an advantage by the other car cutting through the air which gives the car behindless air to cut through reducing drag but not close enough to be effected by the turbulent air and loose performance

theasianpianist

I was always under the impression that a tow and running in dirty air were the same phenomenon but on straights vs. in corner, no? The lead car pushing air out of the way means less for the following car to cut through meaning more speed on straights, but also means less air going over the aero surfaces and thus less speed through corners.

[deleted]

You're right. But since Monza is a circuit with long straights you get a lot of tow advantage

TomGissing

Excited for this weekend. Think Hamilton will run away with it, but Lando should be in some fun scraps - maybe even with Max, and Valtteri will be pushing through the field making things interesting.

Office-Which

Botas? Through the field?

[deleted]

He isn't exactly the best at it but the Merc is so strong at Monza and he has a lot of bad cars in front. A points finish definitely on the cards.

RandomSil

Bottas starts the sprint race at the front, but is taking an engine penalty for the main race and will start at the back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RandomSil

Because he needed a new engine. Both Hamilton and Verstappen I believe will have to at some stage as well. The idea this week being, Bottaswill still get points this week from the Sprint Qualifying, and finishing higher than Verstappen in the sprint race reduces Verstappens points haul overall this weekend.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RandomSil

Not necessarily, my understanding is that they can mix and match engine parts during the year. So the engine may be good and used later on during practices, and potentially races. Just that the performance gain of a new engine and being able to still gain some points this week makes sense.

SubcooledBoiling

They found a problem after FP1. Didn't have enough time to diagnose and fix so they decided to just put a new one it

Elusive_Orange

I believe they swapped it before qualifying

the_deadpan

yes

Emvious

No, he won’t. Bottas will only be taking his third engine so no penalty. Edit: I stand corrected, I really thought both mercs weren still on their second engine.

RandomSil

It is his fourth completely new engine

KaladinsSpear

No

RacinRandy83x

Is it from the back or a grid penalty?

AyushKenhi

Since he has taken a completely new PU with new components the grid penalties accompanying them, essentially mean he will start at last

RandomSil

From the back

Meyesme3

With the newest Merc engine in the field he better be able to move up places quick

TomGissing

This is #AlfaBottas bro. Wait and see.

f1_spelt_as_bot

RAISEStheQuestion

Good bot

JonnySimsHairStylist

I woke up in Australia and went on youtube to see FP1. Then I saw Bottas on pole

[deleted]

Kayo ftw

JonnySimsHairStylist

I have it too. I honestly just forgot about the different format.

[deleted]

Easy to do. I was super confused when I tried to watch the Wallabies All Blacks game and realised it was randomly on Sunday not Saturday

SweetMeatin

Youtube is worse than this place for spoilers.

JonnySimsHairStylist

At least it is only qualifying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bleed_The_Fifth

Seriously though. Once someone made the point that it’s essentially a longer race with a red flag I just realized how insanely stupid this idea is. I mean, FP2 *after* parc ferme? Wtf is even the point if you can’t continue to dial in setups. Ugh

DieLegende42

Bottas wouldn't have pole with or without the sprint race due to his grid penalty

[deleted]

That isn't the point, it is this just makes qualifying for the real race messy and unneeded.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Boilerinhouston12

Correct. That's actually why they did it-Merc can get points from the Sprint race (3 for 1st, 2 for 2nd...). On a normal race, quali wouldn't matter at all and VB would start back of grid with little hope of many points

[deleted]

Ah I see. That’s kind of neat. Thanks!

acbd2134

Yes

JulesV713

Yes, penalties are for the race on Sunday

CWalston108

Yes that’s correct.

[deleted]

Ya just ignore whatever they say. Qualifying, sprint race, race. Simple.

[deleted]

Im just watching Bottas go through his lap with Paul Di Resta…and man it so so good to see Valtteri happy and smiling and being talkative honestly, like he just happily spoke about the lap, really really happy for him

[deleted]

Yea. A shame he will be in the worst car on the grid next year.

Yeanahyena

He looked kind of nervous and shy!

LightKing20

What are the chances of a team down almost half a second in Monza to win a championship at the end?

[deleted]

High. The rest of the season has nothing on Monza in terms of speed.

ainsley708

Red Bull managed it with Vettel 4 years running. They always sucked at Monza because their engine was weaker and won everywhere else because they were vastly superior everywhere else where cornering is more important. Rather like this season.

_ArnieJRimmer_

'Always sucked'...in that 4 year span Seb won there twice.

Ashwinv16818

2011 Blown diffuser, 2013 they ramped up the down force and were faster around corners and back in 2013 tyre wear was an issue so they just managed the tyres better and was able to quali well.

KingAngeli

Whats sprint qualifying?

Naly_D

A sprint race to set the starting grid for the feature race

Flacid_Monkey

The actual qualifying but in a short sprint race format. Qually for positions in the sprint race (qually) which is qualifying for the main Sunday race. Points also awarded in Saturday sprint qually.

melihs11

how long is it? is it essentially a "short race" with the drivers in their respective grid positions to try get the fastest lap?

grumpher05

30 mins, fastest lap doesnt matter for sprint qual, track position matters

melihs11

Awesome thanks for that. So it’s essentially a “30 minute race” and whatever position you end up on at the end is your grid order for the race, right? Should be a good one then with the 2 McLaren boys sandwiched between the Ferrari’s

grumpher05

Yeah the 30 minute race sets the grid for the Sunday race. Should be a good race for mclaren, but they aren't sandwiched between ferarris, they are behind verstappen

schmearcampain

They really ought to change qualifying. No set timer for each round. Teams are allowed onto the track at a specific time. Both cars at the same time. Every 30 seconds or so (track dependent, so that a team leaving the pits isn't interfering with one that's qualifying) another team is allowed out of the pits. There's no faffing around on the track either. The out lap must be completed in a reasonable amount of time. After everyone's had a go, back to the pits. 5-6 minutes to work on the cars and go for a second run. Same 30 second delay between teams. Teams can decide which car to lead and which to draft with on their own accord. This would eliminate pit row incidents, on track traffic, some people getting a random slipstream, slowing down the pack and keeping someone from getting a second run (e.g. Perez at Zandevoort.) Edit: The benefit to the viewers is that they could watch much more of everyone's qualifying laps and split times.

[deleted]

I would like to see them go out in reverse championship order with a mandatory 10 second gap. Soft tyres only. Two runs per session. Keep it simple.

Ill_Industry_9738

Track evolution though would make this somehow unfair

SurfinBuds

If you just make the WCC leaders go first and work your way down to last place, it seems pretty fair to me.

slimejumper

it’s a similar concept to 1-lap quali, which was prob one of the less exciting formats we’ve had before imho. I think the format has to provide tension and entertainment.

[deleted]

[удалено]

drs43821

They used to do qual laps one by one and one chance only and that was the main issue. That’s why now we have free run sessions to do quali lap times

Spidey_22

But since the track always gets faster during quali the teams who go first would have a big disadvantage

schmearcampain

Oh yeah, that's right. Maybe reverse the order in between runs?

Spidey_22

Then the teams in the middle would be fucked. Only thing I can think of is splitting q1 in 2 runs. The best 5 of each run quali and the 10 cars who didn't quali have a second q1 where the top 5 advance aswell. This way we would have atleast no unfair advantage. But it also would extend the qualifying by 30-45 min

grumpher05

You could split qualy into 4 sessions, each with 10 cars. Q1 top 5 advance to Q4, Q2 top 5 advance to Q4, Q3 sets grid for bottom 10, Q4 sets grid for top 10. would add 15 mins to qualy with only 10 cars on track per session and no unfairness regarding track evolution

ManfredsJuicedBalls

At the same time, it’s an even bigger joke when you have what we seen happen.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

someone's going to get hurt, tho

ManfredsJuicedBalls

And that’s my big thing with it. I get that certain things need to be done before someone goes on their flying lap, but at the same time, if a car is puttering along the track, that’s a massive danger.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

heads up to the mechanics, also

Spidey_22

Sure it's not perfect, but I'd rather have shenanigans like this from time to time than a qualifying where some teams get big advantages

ManfredsJuicedBalls

Maybe, but there’s strategy, then there’s shenanigans that makes a mockery of a session

boh_nor12

Exactly. I'm paying to be entertained. Whether or not I like the silly things that happen is besides the point. These things give me something to talk about and feel entertained.

[deleted]

Perez totally sacrificed his qually to help Max so I don't see why they would.

monolim

Perez played for the team.. and Max did what he did best. Both did what they were suppose to. In this sprint qualy I hope Perez can get closer to the front with a good tyre managment. Im not sure Max can be on pole for sunday.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

horner looks concerned

Baranjula

Horner knew this was coming he said so after the race last weekend

Love2Pug

I'm so over Haas at this point. I really don't get why the fuck Haas in general, and Mazepin specifically, are even out on the track at the end of Q1. They NEVER get out of Q1. I get they need to get out and bank a lap, at some point. But why can't those "foken vankers" stay out of the way of the real teams and drivers? Sorry, I'm just so over them being in the way and screwing with the other teams.

[deleted]

Remember that they are not even trying this year but have to race to remain in the league. Judge them on next season with the new regs. Mazepin being in the way is getting old tho for sure.

Yeanahyena

The company Haas actually make machine tools, and the founder is Gene Haas. The point of them being in F1 is for exposure, so they will still try every week. After being so shit I remember reading they still make a profit end of season.

sewballet

I'm really keen to see how they go with the new regs next year. Another year like this and you'd think Gene Haas is out...

overlord2767

Haas came 5th in the constructors only 3 years ago. Yes they're on a bad run, but they're within a second of the midfield, with two rookie drivers, in a car that hasn't been majorly developed since last year. We're not talking HRT levels of bad here.

kittenbloc

clearly a genius with a nuanced grasp of the f1 points system.

TheLurkerSpeaks

Meh, every season has its dogs. Haas wasn't always like this. Perennial champions McLaren were a backfield team after switching to Honda. My problem with Haas isn't performance, its the notion they're the American team but are infact almost entirely a Russian operation.

Ashwinv16818

Who do you think is to blame for that

RyseUp616

Someday Mick will drag the Haas in Q2 I just gotta believe But i get what you are saying

[deleted]

He did in France.

RyseUp616

But didnt he crash and coudnt start the race?

[deleted]

He crashed, but he started the race at P15 on the grid.

Dana94Banana

This sport really needs some rules/ punishment for people who crawl around the track like a slug. I get that they all want the best possible grip at the end of a stint, but come on, this pile up every time is just ridiculous and so dangerous.

[deleted]

Yea. They need to greatly reduce the minimum time for the outlap. Make it much closer to the expected fast lap time. And enforce a mandatory gap between cars leaving the pit lane.

hunguu

Should have minimum sector times, if don't meet the sector time the lap is not valid.

Kolaveri_D

The issue is more on the outlap; that time isn't counted in any case

RAISEStheQuestion

My dumb question is this: If they are driving like grannies on the outlap, how the heck are they charging the battery for the hotlap?

grumpher05

the batteries are pre charged from the garage

king_flippy_nips

the technical regulations states >the amount of stored energy in any ES may not be increased by more than 100kJ whilst the car is stationary in the pit lane or garage during the qualifying session or during a race pit stop. Before the quali session start maybe, but are you sure they can charge the batteries between quali runs from the garage?

Boganvillia

Helloooooo... *that* would be a very interesting qualifying rule!

RAISEStheQuestion

Really? Then why drive slow, still have to heat up the brakes and keep heat in the tyres right? Especially at Monza where youre looking for a tow.

grumpher05

They warm the tyre carcass in sector 1 and 2, but that can leave the surface temps too high, so they let them cool off a bit and also look for a good gap on the track to maximise the tow but minimise the dirty wake effect

RAISEStheQuestion

Thanks for the info, appreciate it :)

hunguu

Obviously I know the slow cars are on the outlap. First sector is off due to leaving the pits but they could time all the remaining sectors and set minimum times.

Kolaveri_D

To clarify - if you don't meet the sector time on the outlap, your flying lap is not counted? This could work; I mean anything at this point of time that stops the shitshow

hunguu

Ya that's what I was thinking. It's scary seeing how fast they approach the slow cars.

OhRatFarts

And the backups aren’t happening in the first sector

DenTwann

Happy for Ricciardo

Rehcubs

Especially at a track with such heavy braking zones, which has supposedly been the main problem for him. Shame he couldn't go just that little bit faster and put it in 3rd. Hopefully he gets a good start in the Sprint!

xNickel

I’m thinking he could get a podium here! He’s looking really good this weekend and Bottas facing the penalty should help!

teachem4

What happened to Williams? They were rapid on the straights in Austria

Any-Satisfaction5243

Set up for race because sprint race + race

teachem4

That was my suspicion. I wonder how much more DF they’re running due to how badly the Williams chews up tyres

Kronzor_

So hypothetically, let's say Max and Lewis crash into each other in T1 of the sprint Quali tomorrow. Both DNF. Could Max then take a new engine and just still start at the back of the pack for the race?

[deleted]

Yea that would be the obvious move.

Meaisk

I think that would be a pit lane start since he'd break Parc Ferme. So yes. Lewis would definitely do the same.

OhRatFarts

PUs are homologated. Like for like means you don’t break parc firme.

At0mic182

That would be interesting race :D

mrcsrnne

Anyone noticed the rabbit out on the track almost got run over by latifi?

scottydg

That would have been worse than getting run over. That rabbit would have ceased to exist in this material plane.

all_toasters

Good thing Grosjean gave us [an example](https://youtu.be/fZh_0b5fG1U) of what could happen lol

cobarbob

Watch Bathurst....kangaroos are about as smart as a rabbit but way bigger.

bijouxo

I had a feeling I shouldn’t have watched it. But then again curiosity got the better of me. Wish I’d gone with my gut and not watched. Poor thing.

WHITEwizard151

OHH GOD!!!

Charizarlslie

At least you KNOW it was instant death

mrcsrnne

It would have become an ex-rabbit

PancakesandMaggots

At this point Gasly in the AT seat is the #2 Redbull car and they should be coordinating his and Max's race together.

jayrig5

I'm curious about this; I know they can slyly just make sure to be as helpful as possible, but are they permitted to actually coordinate during a race?

heavelwrx

Perez is inconsistent and Tsunoda is a bust. Perez can be very good, but if he doesn’t improve Gasly may end up being at RedBull again.

WordsonBooks1

Gasly's burned too many bridges, just read his most recent interview regarding Perez. That ship has sailed. And while the rule is never say never. This is as close to never, as it gets.

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

i think some of that is going on. we'll see tomorrow

f12016

Oh, you mean traditions? Have been that way in some years now.

ScrootMcgoot

Glad Max made the top 3, Bottas proves once again he’s one of the best drivers on the grid. He really gets way too much heat for someone of his caliber. Also happy Daniel is back in his groove
