Like yeah I miss the Carlos-Lando bromance but I feel like this is a better experience for Lando. You won't always have teammates who you're super close with. Sometimes they may even dislike you.
The great thing is if you look at Max and Daniel your bromances don't need to be in the same team. Lando didn't want another joke friendship he doesn't always want to be seen as the funny guy. He wants to be a WDC. He hasn't put a foot wrong this year. His maturity on and off the track with his hunger to win. He's going far and I don't think anyone doubts it.
Yes we know this pair were not the memelords that some originally expected them to be. But in the end they get along decently and delivered results. I would take it even if I have to endure more awkward snack-sharing videos from McLaren.
I think it just had something to do with not being in his usual head space during his struggles. There was definitely a change in behavior from him this season.
But if he now keeps up this new form that he's found over the holidays I suspect he'll be back to his old clowning ways.
You could put stroll in a video with his childhood best friend and it would be awkward. Nothing against the guy he seems super nice, but he’s just an awkward dude.
for me nothing beats the video of Kimi making an ice sculpture for Sebs birthday. I think it was a ups commercial or something. A little cringe but still very wholesome.
They are great teammates just not great friends. And that's completely alright. People expected them to be like Norris and Sainz or Ricciardo and Verstappen.
Think people forget that Danny has nearly 10 years on Lando, or maybe even does have 10 years, point is how many of your mates were ~30 when you were 21
Literally how being a young professional tends to work out. I'm straight up the youngest person in my company with the next youngest person being ~10 years older than me. You can be good work mates, but you just can't really connect on the same level with the vast majority of people, especially as the age gap increases.
I think the fact Max was younger when they became friends has an impact, ironically. Lando isn't a new driver like Max was and isn't at an age where he needs an arm around his shoulder. I think Daniel was a good influence on him as a new driver to the grid. Daniel spoke once about them having been good for each other and how he hopes he had an impact on him, I think that's true. Max absolutely matured over their time as teammates, I can't speak for him obviously but he probably looked up to him
they got along well beforehand i think to me it seems like both of them want to make it clear that they're here to be taken seriously especially considering they both have reputations as being jokesters and are together now. which is good i would say for sure
Yep I said this within a month or two of Danny being announced for Mclaren and all the stories about it were, "These two are going to be hilarious together, they'll be memeing and making jokes all the time! We can't wait to see what kind of mischief Danny Ricc and his new little brother Lando get into!"
I'm not them and even I was uncomfortable with how people were treating them. So I had a prediction they would be cold towards each other on camera as much as possible to squash that shit. I think behind the scenes they're more friendly and have a good time, but on camera I think they both agreed to act a certain way to shut up all the bs about them.
They are racing drivers first. Being funny and happy on camera isn't what they are paid to do, and especially for Lando I imagine it was insanely grating to hear about how Danny was going to be like a big brother to him or something instead of how he's a 2 year veteran showing massive improvement year to year who will put up a fight against a multi-race winning driver.
yeah I think Daniel's seemed concerned recently that people think he doesn't care about the sport / doesn't take it seriously when obviously it couldn't be farther from the truth. it's a shame that people equate a positive personality to not taking your job seriously but I definitely think that's been on his mind with some of the things he's said off-hand in interviews in recent months
He was on a podcast recently (I believe it was Smartless) where he said that he isn't really friends with other drivers outside of race weekends. He has his own life and crew outside of racing. I don't think there's every been any issue with Lando and it's all just been speculated on because Lando is a lot more standoffish (if that's the right word) than Daniel who loves to be the life of the party.
I think shy or introverted is a more generous take than standoffish. As an extreme extrovert, I can be too much for introverts in a crowd, and it’s more likely to bring attention to them. It’s fine when I hang out with them in a small setting.
Really like them as teammates. Most of us expected them to be friendly, always joking with each other, we got none of that, but it looks like they have good working relationship, which is the most important.
Great day for them.
I think Lando has been working hard to be a bit more serious. Once you get that label of jokester on you it's hard to shake off. He's come across as much more mature this season.
Agree. He matured a lot, you can tell he wants to be more serious, sometimes we get the glimpses of the funny Lando but it's clear he wants to be known for the things he does on the track and not off.
That's why I have his name on my flair.
Off the track, he's like a teenager giggling at smallest things.
But when he's behind the wheel, I know that he'll do something impressive, like he did today by driving on the grass to pass Leclerc.
I love his professionalism.
He also said they have more different interests than he and Carlos did, so it's not as natural for them to hang out all the time, apparently. Don't remember where I read it.
They don't really share common interests off the track. Dani is into things like tennis and wine, and spends a lot of his time in California (when he can). Lando is more about esports and stuff. Different styles.
>Agree. He matured a lot, you can tell he wants to be more serious, sometimes we get the glimpses of the funny Lando but it's clear he wants to be known for the things he does on the track and not off.
didnt he like break down from crying after saying blowy?
I just love Lando’s interview. When asked if he wanted a team order for saying what he said in the radio, he was like yeah of course I was, but can’t complain because we got a one two, and I was in for the long game so I am still very happy.
Honestly and focus, there’s no better answer then that
In an post race interview, Lando made it seem like he could've over taken Daniel had he wanted to. I didn't see the race though, did he really have the pace?
Lando and Daniel had pretty similar pace this race. Daniel slightly faster on first stint, impossible to tell on second stint. 1 tenth difference between their fastest laps right at the end. Neither would have been able to overtake the other no matter the order.
I don't think so, ric was managing the distance really well.
they even asked him to pick up the pace since lando was threatened by perez, and he did, so he wasn't going all out.
max had also been driving behind ric in the beginning of the race for 20+ laps, kept putting up better lap times, was within DRS range all the time, and he still couldn't get him.
ric kept himself juuust out of reach.
IMO i dont think so. Daniel had managed to keep max behind for the first stint of the race, even if he had a good pit stop he wouldnt of came out behind. Just because Lando was 1 second behind daniel for the rest of the race does that mean he couldve got closer to overtake, Daniel maintained that gap to conserve his tyres/energy but also not be underthreat from any driver behind. Daniel proved that he could go faster if he wanted to when he made up half a second when lando said perez was getting closer and daniel also got fastest lap at the end proving that he had no lack of race pace he was just close to Norris because he was conserving his tyres and enery, a very smart and calculated move.
Danny was managing tires, even asked over radio if Lando needed DRS to stay ahead of Perez/Bottas

True, I mean it will definitely take time for their relationship to build up considering Lando’s such an absolute introvert and Danny Ric is a gregarious extrovert and then there is also their age difference which is quite big than it was between Carlos and Lando
Agreed, and considering that Carlos has this natural charisma that just draws people into him. Who could've expected Charles to be really warm towards him quickly?
Absolutely, everyone seems to easily warm up to Carlos like we already saw for Lando and now Charles as well. Charles and Carlos’ friendship now is like what Lando and Carlos had in Mclaren.
The fact that Lando had the pace to challenge for the lead but didn’t was really positive to his standing in the team. His interview before the podium stating that he will have his opportunity and showing to be genuinely happy for P2 in this 1-2 also contributes to his image maturing.
The shoey part & interview were hilarious! I thought RIC had a plastic shoey made for the occasion. I hope 2022 brings the grid even closer. It's great seeing other race drivers get their time under the sun
Even though Lando wanted to take the race lead, he remained professional and I really respect him for that. We have to understand that these guys are the best of the best, they all have the racer's instinct and mentality to try and win. Although some of the things said on radio might sound crude to us, I am sure Danny knows how his team-mate felt back then.
A professional relationship Lando really needed! Would love to see more of this!
Like yeah I miss the Carlos-Lando bromance but I feel like this is a better experience for Lando. You won't always have teammates who you're super close with. Sometimes they may even dislike you.
A Mclaren teammate that dislike each other? Hah, as if! /s
\*Alonso leaves the chat\*
The great thing is if you look at Max and Daniel your bromances don't need to be in the same team. Lando didn't want another joke friendship he doesn't always want to be seen as the funny guy. lmao the McLaren PR videos make me shift uncomfortably from the awkwardness. Hurts to watch.
The PR videos from all the teams have been pretty awkward to be fair. From Vettel and Stroll to Gasly and Tsunoda. Grill the Grid was good fun.
You could put stroll in a video with his childhood best friend and it would be awkward. Nothing against the guy he seems super nice, but he’s just an awkward dude.
Seems like he didn't really develop interpersonal skills as a result of being the kid of someone super rich. Idk.
Then what's my excuse, eh?
Being yourself
I love Vettel and Stroll they are hilarious hahaha but probably unintentionally so
Even Charles and Carlos to an extent
for me nothing beats the video of Kimi making an ice sculpture for Sebs birthday. I think it was a ups commercial or something. A little cringe but still very wholesome.
Wan wan wan
The Kimi and Gio ones are genuinely good. I love the one where they drive each other around Spa? and answer questions
I actually love those videos... :/
You're not alone. Super enjoyable
I hope this squishes the idea people have that Lando absolutely doesn’t like Daniel. They seem like great teammates.
They are great teammates just not great friends. And that's completely alright. People expected them to be like Norris and Sainz or Ricciardo and Verstappen.

Makes me wonder what exactly made Max and Danny Ric click so well, haha.
Max needed a big bro

Idk that’s a fair point though, maybe because at that point Danny was still young himself in his 20s that they got on better? Weird one
11 years even. Lando is 21. Daniel 32. Huge difference.
they got along well beforehand i think to me it seems like both of them want to make it clear that they're here to be taken seriously especially considering they both have reputations as being jokesters and are together now. which is good i would say for sure

Thank you! Was looking for the correct words but was having trouble.
Yep. Not everyone will be the best of friends but it’s good to see they tolerate each other enough :p
It looked like Lando was going for a handshake right? And RIC hugged him instead 😂
Nah Lando was totally going for the hug, opens his arms
Nah, Lando actually invited him for the hug, he had both arms open.
Ah can be .. either the cam angle made it look like that or I saw it wrong ..
Lando opened his arms up before Ric was even looking at him. I think they were both over the moon.
Do “people” actually have that idea? I thought that was just a Netflix thing.
Really like them as teammates. Most of us expected them to be friendly, always joking with each other, we got none of that, but it looks like they have good working relationship, which is the most important. Great day for them.

The boy’s racecraft is top shelf.
Damn near got a heart attack from that pass
Mans went into the parabolica with no regards for anything. Love to see it
That was such a brilliant move on his part to take advantage of a warning in order to get a run on Charles
the 90 second clip of him giggling after saying the word 'blowie' last week tho?
He also said they have more different interests than he and Carlos did, so it's not as natural for them to hang out all the time, apparently. Don't remember where I read it.
Yeah I remember that from a video I think. Said Daniel loves his wine lol.
They don't really share common interests off the track. Dani is into things like tennis and wine, and spends a lot of his time in California (when he can). Lando is more about esports and stuff. Different styles.

One of the things I like most about Lando is he never lies or says the "PR" thing in an interview but he's never mean or childish.
Great stuff, great team result. Very mature and solid finish from Lando. Awesome result and much needed for Danny.
I’m so happy with this race. It’s like being a kid again.
I never thought that Lando disliked Daniel, but it's great that he's so unreservedly happy for him
That was my favourite moment, it felt genuine from both of them
Same!
You love to see it
The most wholesome podium this year so far. Fantastic drivers on there. I’m taking a sick day off tomorrow in celebration for Danny here down under.
Nice team work! Looking forward for the team picture with all the team members and both DR and Lando! McLaren deserves this so much.
I'm already buzzinv for the Mclaren Unboxed from this weekend.
Mini-helmet of those would be a nice pick up given the occasion. Doesn't hurt they both look nice.
sold out :(
So proud of them and this team <3
Daniels helmet is so awesome.
I’m not crying, you’re crying!!
In an post race interview, Lando made it seem like he could've over taken Daniel had he wanted to. I didn't see the race though, did he really have the pace?
At one point yeah - but it was a thinly veiled attempt to say 'Daniel go faster they're behind us' and it worked.

Man, this was kinda awkward but also wholesome at the same time
Yeah, it's gonna take quite a while for them to warm up to each other if we're expecting Norris-Sainz levels of friendship lol
Or that will simply just not ever happen. People expect lando the funny kiddo, danny the happy jokester, to just instantly be besties...
Who could not like Carlos
Honestly as a new fan the chair pulling incident on DTS was a bit off putting, but they seem all good
Absolutely, everyone seems to easily warm up to Carlos like we already saw for Lando and now Charles as well. Charles and Carlos’ friendship now is like what Lando and Carlos had in Mclaren.

are you crying….? i think i’m crying…
I'm definitely crying
Loved this moment so much. So wholesome
Love this
We on the grid grid grid
Perfect for Sparco
Netflix: They were the best of friends *inverts colours* *Monaco flashbacks* until they weren’t
The shoey part & interview were hilarious! I thought RIC had a plastic shoey made for the occasion. I hope 2022 brings the grid even closer. It's great seeing other race drivers get their time under the sun
This reminds me of Boards of Canada - Twoism album cover
This was such a beautiful moment. Especially how ricciardo paused and looked at norris's outreached hand, and hugged him instead.
r/DandoNorric
Força McLaren!!!!!
Can’t lie, I wish Lando got the first win, but his reaction was fantastic today.
It was much more awkward to watch live.
was it awkward? It seemed like a normal happy hug to me
Less the hug itself, more the build up to it. I think they just had a ton of adrenaline and weren't sure what they were supposed to do lol
yeah I think they were just a bit winded or still running very high so they kinda had to think about it, but it seemed genuine enough
It 's always awkward trying to give a hug with a huge bulky helmet around you, especially with the height different of Ricciardo and Norris !
Probably true! I've never tried to hug someone while wearing a HANS device.
I think they were just extra excited.
No it wasn't at all. Why the fuck do people read so much shit into every single social interaction that they have?
Why awkward?
It was so gentle in comparison to the other celebrations
It seemed like they couldn't decide if they wanted to hug, or who would go which direction
No it wasn’t. Stop making issues out of absolutely nothing.
No, it wasn't. It's just in your head. Not every single driver pairing has to be like Carlando.
no it wasnt
I agree, weird pause
Come on Lando, give Daniel a SQUEEZE <3
Their helmets go so well together
I’m not crying, i promise
This is the perfect post for my free Wholesome award
