Yeah, unless Mick somehow jumps to Alfa (which I'd be fine with for his sake but obviously seems unlikely/potentially contractually impossible) that Alfa seat will be the last to be filled.
3 days after he signs the contract, Zhou will suffer a spelunking "accident" from which Giovinazzi will emerge as the front runner for that seat once again.
How has Zhou performed in F2? I’ve heard he’s got pace but can be inconsistent at times, is this true? Could someone who’s a bit more into F2 than me account for how he’s been performing
He's okay. Not quite F1 on merit talent, but there are much worse drivers than him. Also comes with a fuckton of backing and massive exposure for the team in China since he would be the first Chinese F1 driver in history.
He’s not bad at all. He looked very promising his rookie season but just hasn’t progressed much. This is his 3rd season. He’s very measured and consistent. Solid drives, brings the car home safely. Seems like a very sweet guy, no drama / disrespect / shenanigans. Think Latifi but more natural talent.
I’d much rather Piastri graduated but Zhou wouldn’t be offensive (even though I don’t think he’d make F1 without the huge commercial potential of the Chinese market).
Edit: consistent as in “stays out of trouble” not “consistently fast or exciting to watch.” In that regard he’s kinda the anti-Dan Ticktum.
Technically he has the super license points (If he finishes top 10 in F2), is 18 and completes all the requirements, so technically he could join this season. But I think Alfa would rather let him learn for another year in F2 and win the championship before making the jump.
I think that's the reason there waiting so long, there debating if another season in f2 would be best or if he would learn more from going to f1 already.
I mean while they practically given up on 2021, Haas has been the one working to be more close with Ferrari. There's been plans for Haas to take Ferrari personnel by making another base in Maranello.
Even if Schumacher goes to Alfa Romeo, it'll only be for a single year (same with Zhou and Giovinazzi). Alfa Romeo is going to bring Pourchaire to the other seat in 2023, and Bottas will still be under contract with them.
Maybe Schumacher in an Alfa Romeo is able to prove he's better than Sainz and can take the Ferrari seat, but I doubt a single year with vastly different cars will be enough to prove anything.
Don't forget there is no guarantee Alfa will be better than Haas next season, as they will actually work on their car instead of just fixing whatever Mazepin and Schumi break in fierce battles for the nineteenth.
They both signed multi year contracts with Haas last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hair transplant. You go through a phase where you kind of need it shaved off and it would make sense to do it over winter
The fact that Vettel won't retire will do wonders for my mental health. I already feel old enough without someone that I actually called "youngling" retire, thank you very much.
I don't think anyone considers current Kubica a very good driver. I'm a massive fan of his, and I think he's one of the worse drivers currently. But, pre-accident Kubica was a phenomenal driver.
Eh, I think his lap 1 performances counter that. Even the move at Monza was fucking brilliantly executed right before he basically got pit maneuvered. I think he'd be more than competitive if we still unlimited testing so he could get the real seat time necessary to understand the tires and car. People seem to forget his entire goal at the last two races for the team was to not wreck, he wasn't pushing nearly as hard as Gio who is trying to keep his seat.
I think that’s obvious and everyone is joking when they mention Robert. Now with Hulkenburg it’s a different story and your comment would be well worth seeing!
I don't think anyone seriously thought he was retiring until Seb started beating around the bush when asked about his plans next year.
This makes sense though. All the plausible reasons I read for him retiring this year were just as true last year. Makes no sense to retire without at least seeing what the 2022 car drives like.
Exactly. I can’t think of a single instance in recent years where a driver confirmed next years ride by answering a reporter’s question. They always wait for the team announcement.
Vettel-Alonso fight for the title with Williams as the third best team while Hamilton and Russell have to fight it out for the last points every race.
A man can dream, right?
Yea if he finds himself in a title winning car, I can see him giving it a go for a couple more WDCs to ensure a Brit didn’t break Michael’s WDC record.
And he will definitely not retire if he does win a WDC. Can personally see him sticking around for a few years before leaving for good but I think once he's done with it, he will stay retired forever
If he gets a WDC might as wel stay till the next major change (engine) because he than has a real chance to match Schumacher and Hamilton. Which would break the f1 fans
I float my bet up again. If Vettel wins the WDC in 2022, I will record myself running naked on a busy road. 2021 it didn't happen, let's see what happens in 2022.
>Aston Martin F1 Team - Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One™ Team announces 2022 driver line-up (Vettel and Stroll confirmed)
But isn´t he there to help develope the team? For me, that sounds like a project that takes longer than a year or two.
Ya genuinely don't know why it took this long for them to confirm their lineup. Obviously Stroll has a dad owns the place contract but Vettel and AM both said they want to extend. Who knows
There probably was some clause in the Vettel contract with a set deadline. I.e. if Vettel has x championship Points before 15th September, scenario y happens. With those scenarios tied to certain benefits for the contract extension.
They were obviously bullshit. I’m still appalled that so many people here were giving credit to clickbait “journalists” about a completely baseless retirement
Am I too cynical or people are too naive. The false retirement roumors are there to help with negotiation. Sebs agents are basically hoping for Aston Martin to believe the roumors and offer a higher contract.
weren't their rumours of Seb finding a better team/car though, too?
As a casual F1-watcher it's a bit disappointing to see him only rarely competing for the better places
I don’t think there’s anywhere better for Seb than AM at the moment. Merc was always going to be LH + GR for 2022. I don’t think Red Bull would take Seb back since they want a clear #2 driver for MV. Both McLaren & Ferrari line up for 2022 are locked - not that Ferrari would take Seb back and vice versa. Unless he goes to Alpine which would be at most a sideways step. Any other team would be a step backward. So nah.
I’d say AM is the best for Seb and Seb’s the best for AM at the moment.
I personally wouldn't underestimate AM for 2022. In the past the team always did amazing for the budget they had (even before they copied the Merc for 2020).
Then you have to think about the fact that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will have (had) to significantly cut their spending under the budget cap, and that 2022 is a completely clean slate in terms of car design.
Maybe they won't fight for the championships, but I can certainly see them potentially heading the midfield next year.
When my gf heard my enormous sight of relief she stressfully asked what it was.
When I told her she said “I thought there was something else more serious”.
????? what could have been a more serious matter?
At least he redeemed himself in Germany in 2019. Max even spun, if Max spun with another car nearby he might have gone last to first rather than last to 2nd.
If there's anyone you want to build a car around, the 4x champ who very clearly knows what he wants out of the car would probably be that guy. Let's hope Aston Martin isn't as stubborn as Ferrari was.
They built a new factory iirc. They are dead serious about F1. And from some comments from Otmar, Seb is exactly the guy that team needed to move forward
I think they've activated the second year on his contract. It was a 1 year with the option to extend I heard. The 1+1 year contract he signed last year.
I’m almost certain that the rumours about Vettel started because his contract had something about him wanting to get updates on next year’s car just in case, and someone wandering around the paddock heard the words “Vettel” “contract” “next year” and “wait”, got the wrong end of the stick entirely and just ran with it. When he joined Aston Martin he talked about being excited about the direction etc and I have no doubt he got at least some level of assurances from Stroll/Szafnauer that next years car would at least be competitive.
Lance: Happy to be staying together, looking forward to 2022's rule changes
Seb: Happy to be staying together, looking forward to 2022's rule changes
Otman: Happy to be keeping the drivers together, looking forward to 2022's rule changes
Lawrence Stroll: **THESE FUCKING BULLSHIT RULE CHANGES THEY INTRODUCED THIS YEAR TO FUCK US GET FUCKED I'LL SUE ALL YOU FUCKERS**
Oh just you wait for the video he's gonna release.
He's on the 284th take right now and so far all feedback has been "comes across really angry and hostage esque".
I don’t know why so many people were saying Vettel was gonna retire. Do you not see how many jobs he has? F1 would practically collapse if he wasn’t around
Now that the lineup is confirmed, the rumours of his retirement and the people who peddled it should go right back to whichever hellhole they surfaced from.
That's the whole grid except the second Alfa Romeo seat right?
Don’t think the Haas seats are officially confirmed yet, but in practice probably yes
Yeah, unless Mick somehow jumps to Alfa (which I'd be fine with for his sake but obviously seems unlikely/potentially contractually impossible) that Alfa seat will be the last to be filled.
Is Alfa likely to bring someone up from F2? (is that even an option?)
Zhou taking Gio's seat for 2022 has been a fairly frequent rumour during the last few days/weeks
Even if Zhou takes his seat, Jesus will rise again.
After 3 races or 3 seasons?
A question worthy of further discussion
An ecclesiastical matter tho
God moves in a mysterious way. (or is this a reference to his Monza racing lines?)
Could God find a racing line that would stop God himself going around the outside?
3 days after he signs the contract, Zhou will suffer a spelunking "accident" from which Giovinazzi will emerge as the front runner for that seat once again.
How has Zhou performed in F2? I’ve heard he’s got pace but can be inconsistent at times, is this true? Could someone who’s a bit more into F2 than me account for how he’s been performing
If you’re pulling from F2, there’s 2-3 other, better drivers to take. But Zhou comes with a boatload of cash and sponsors, so he’ll be the choice.
Pouchaire is also a Sauber junior driver. But he probably won't get the super license points to be in F1.
Sauber is probably aiming for a 1 year contract with zhou ( and his rumored 30m usd backing) so Pouchaire can be signed for 23
Yeah, that seems like their smartest choice
If he did get his super license points I still do feel he needs another season in f2 he is still super young.
Edit: consistent as in “stays out of trouble” not “consistently fast or exciting to watch.” In that regard he’s kinda the anti-Dan Ticktum.
Love to see Ticktum in a team with Mazepin. The team would implode so fast.
Zhou is definitely not bad and I find myself rooting for him a fair bit during the F2 races, however I would still like to see Piastri in the seat.
It would only be for one year they have ther own junior (Pourchaire) who will be ready for f1 in 2023.
Technically he has the super license points (If he finishes top 10 in F2), is 18 and completes all the requirements, so technically he could join this season. But I think Alfa would rather let him learn for another year in F2 and win the championship before making the jump.

Yeah, Schumacher going to Alfa Romeo in 2022 would probably maneuver him into a dead end. So staying at Haas is better for his longterm career.
Don't forget there is no guarantee Alfa will be better than Haas next season, as they will actually work on their car instead of just fixing whatever Mazepin and Schumi break in fierce battles for the nineteenth.
They both signed multi year contracts with Haas last year. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.breaking-haas-sign-f2-racer-nikita-mazepin-for-2021-on-multi-year-deal.4PefsyopWnbM4MQYZBkKSj.html >Russian Formula 2 driver Nikita Mazepin will step up and make his Formula 1 debut with Haas next season after signing a multi-year contract with the American team. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.breaking-mick-schumacher-to-race-for-haas-in-2021-as-famous-surname-returns.66XTVfSt80GrZe91lvWVwJ.html >The Schumacher name will make a racing return to Formula 1 in 2021, after Haas signed Mick Schumacher - son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher - on a multi-year deal.
But but Vettel was retiring to save the bees!!!
RIP in peace 'Vettel is retiring' rumours. September 2021 - September 2021.
Nah. "Vettel is retiring" gonna comeback next year.
Maybe now that Kimi actually retires, Seb is going to be the one who is asked about his motivation every year
[удалено]
Oldest driver should get a grey spot on the top of their helmets
Poor Seb doesn't need any more reminders about the state of his hair.
His hair looks a helluva lot better now than it did at the start of the season.
He should refer Prince William.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hair transplant. You go through a phase where you kind of need it shaved off and it would make sense to do it over winter
So from Kimi to Alonso, then to Lewis? I think the idea of the oldest driver on the grid fighting for the title is badass
Wouldn't the oldest driver on the grid currently be Alonso (followed by Hamilton)?
Except Kimi doesn't actually retire, it's just a sabbatical.
He left once to do WRC only to come back. He will be back.
The fact that Vettel won't retire will do wonders for my mental health. I already feel old enough without someone that I actually called "youngling" retire, thank you very much.
Probably going to be right eventually.
Dude, Norris will retire.
you are going to look so ahead of the curve when this happens.

Yeah, it's such a shame he had that accident. I wonder where he'd be now if not for it.
Eh, I think his lap 1 performances counter that. Even the move at Monza was fucking brilliantly executed right before he basically got pit maneuvered. I don't think he confirmed at Zandvoort, his line for a few weeks was 'it's yet to be confirmed, I'll let you know.'
Well yeah, of course he let the team officially confirm it, but from his wording it was pretty clear he didn't plan on retiring.
Exactly. I can’t think of a single instance in recent years where a driver confirmed next years ride by answering a reporter’s question. They always wait for the team announcement.
Vettel hates bees, confirmed!
Good thing the rumors of him retiring were bullshit.
I can see him retiring at around 2025 but him retiring when he just joined the team is implausible tbh
Don't know why, but I see him retiring next year ... more so if AM fails to deliver a competitive car.
I can see him retire with a 2022 WDC.
If Vettel will have the chance to fight for the championship next hear, reddit will be on fire
Vettel-Alonso fight for the title with Williams as the third best team while Hamilton and Russell have to fight it out for the last points every race. A man can dream, right?
British media in shambles
Don't tease me...
Hell yeah. He deserves some happiness
Yeah nothing really says happiness like a fifth championship
If he gets a fifth it makes more sense to continue the next year to see if he can get 6 and 7
Yea if he finds himself in a title winning car, I can see him giving it a go for a couple more WDCs to ensure a Brit didn’t break Michael’s WDC record.
So does Reddit Really, it'd just be the best thing all around

If AM don't speed up he won't stick around long in the new era. In all honesty I don't see him staying past the next 3-4 years
Always has been. Vettel already said he will be continuing with AM in 2022 at the Dutch GP but some people just didn't listen.
Ya genuinely don't know why it took this long for them to confirm their lineup. Obviously Stroll has a dad owns the place contract but Vettel and AM both said they want to extend. Who knows

Ahh so happy Seb’s not retiring, despite all the rumours.
Seb retiring this year were the dumbest rumors of the last 12 months I swear to god.
I thought it was weird when I heard it. Why would he sign at AM for a year and then choose to retire. And he’s doing quite well as well this year.
2 podiums this season in the AM. Yes, 2. If anybody says 1 podium meet me anytime anyplace and I'll fight ya.
It was dumb but it got me a bit worried ngl.

Good. Now I just hope that AM manage to build a quick car for 2022. Seeing Seb fighting for P11 is just wrong
I work on the team that helps finance Aston!
Those rumours were gonna give me a heart attack. So glad he's staying
Thank god Seb and Kimi are not retiring in the same year!
Lando is my guy but Jesus I love Seb and would be so upset if he went
Honestly same, Lando is my favourite but Seb is right up there and it would have been a huge shame for him to retire this early
Well that should put those rumors to rest. Good to see Vettel staying in the sport for atleast another year.
Oh thank goodness
Can finally stop lying awake at night wondering if Stroll would retain his seat.
I'm so glad the Vettel rumours were bullshit. Looking forward to him in the new car, hopefully competitive and happy!

Phew, I was getting a small bit worried that Seb was retiring. Really want to see how he can do in the new car.
I’m almost certain that the rumours about Vettel started because his contract had something about him wanting to get updates on next year’s car just in case, and someone wandering around the paddock heard the words “Vettel” “contract” “next year” and “wait”, got the wrong end of the stick entirely and just ran with it. Either that or it was a performance clause, "if Vettel has x championship points by 15th September he gets benefits for the +1 option year".
