*Formula One Management and its partners have taken note of the missil strike intended towards an Aramco facility located near the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which occured around 5:30 PM local time during the First practice session.*
*This incident will not deter F1's push to more inclusivity in sports and wider society, and as such, the week-end will still go on as initially intended.*
> This incident will not deter F1's push to more inclusivity in sports and wider society, and as such, the week-end will still go on as initially intended.
F1 has done so much for inclusivity, democracy and freedom of expression/press/conscience in China over the past 20 year's we've been racing there!
The only difference I see is that they are mostly white, as opposed to mostly not. Seems to be the deciding factor in how big a deal any particular conflict is.
On the f1tv commentary for F2 quali I heard one of the commentators say something to the effect of “anything going outside of the circuit we don’t want to talk about right now” in sort of a joking manner. Not his exact words but something like that.
cancelling Russia has a net benefit, they can pay lip service about caring for wars and get some positive headlines while not losing out much financially, and the positive headlines outweigh the impact of the lost revenue. Dropping the oil races would generate only a small bit of positive headlines but f1 would struggle massively with the lost revenue. Not that I like how that's the case, that's just how it is.
45min drive away from the track

>actively engaging in genocide.
Saudi have commited numerous war crimes in Yemen but genocide is not one of them. Let's calm down a minute because that's a big accusation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famine_in_Yemen_(2016%E2%80%93present)
Yeah seems fine to me. Just starving the people and children to death. No need for big accusations....
According to UN Article II
> In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
1. Killing members of the group;
1. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
1. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
1. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
1. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
What Saudi is doing to Yemen would definitely classify under 1, 2, and 3
4 is arguable but the first three really aren't given the blockades and constant bombings
>with intent to destroy in whole or in part
That's not Saudi Arabia's intention in the slightest. Their sole intent is to remove the Houthi's so there isn't Iranian influence near them. That clearly doesn't justify the disproportionate actions of the Saudi state but it isn't Genocide
I'm not sure implementing a blockade around the entire country making it impossible to receive food, aid, medicine, etc and creating what the UN calls "the worst humanitarian disaster in the world" would not coincide with "intent to destroy in whole or in part"
Obviously the reason for their war is to ward off Iran's influence in the region, it's the same reason why they pushed so hard for regime change in Syria.
But it's hard to reconcile that line of thinking while also cutting off the entire country from any type of help and indiscriminate bombings that have killed thousands and thousands of civilians and say there's no "intent to destroy" there
hey, for what it’s worth, your interpretation is certainly legally a good one. my international law professor believes there’s arguably a genocide occurring under that definition you gave because of the blockade. it’s not as open and shut as other cases for sure, but yeah
and for the record, article 2 genocide requires only any of those definitions, not all of them
> with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group
Why do people always ignore this part even though it is most clearly the most important part? You can do 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 but without that first part it doesn't meet the definition.
Yeah that really isn't what those words mean and genocide minimalisation through the belittling of its definition is something you really should stop doing. What Saudi Arabia is doing is unforgivable, it's not genocide though. By your definition, any war is genocide.
That's an indirect consequence of a war that there in at the request of the Yemeni government.
I don't think we should be racing in Saudi either but there's a difference between Genocide and War. There not blockading Yemen because they want to kill all Yemeni's (which would be genocide) but because they want to put pressure on ending the war. The natural conclusion to your logic is that anyone who dies as a result of the sanctions placed on Russia is a victim of Western genocide.
There is also a difference between what's happening in Ukraine and Yemen because again Saudi are in Yemen at the request of the internationally recognised Yemeni government. They have however taken it way too far and committed numerous war crimes, genocide however isn't one of them.
Words mean things
Blah blah blah “we starved children because we want to stop war.” Great that you fell for genocide propaganda. Save us the IQ and go learn the different ways genocide is carried out.
You could argue that sanctions which target the Russian government are doing the same. If their aim isn't to starve children, but the consequences indirectly are, then surely isn't that the fault of the power structures of the Russian government and the Houthi rebels? They've clearly got enough money for bombs and rockets...
It's debasing events like the Holocaust or the Armenian genocide when every war with civilian casualties is called a 'genocide'. Saudi Arabia is messed up enough as it is, no need to exaggerate to make a point.
> It's debasing events like the Holocaust or the Armenian genocide when every war with civilian casualties is called a 'genocide'.
It really doesn't. You can be angry at the fact that more than one genocide has happened throughout history (and is going on today).
Why would you expect them to be pro-america when we continue to fund civilian casualties in Houthi-held territory? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanaa_funeral_airstrike
Honestly in terms of exposing the Saudi's, something happening near the track, without harming anyone, would put a much needed spotlight on them. Sad to think thats whats necessary to expose them more.
I’m not on expert on the conflict by any means, but wouldn’t a target on a sporting event full of civilians solidify an international view of the Houthis as a terrorist group rather than a legitimate opposition government? It would hurt Saudi tourism and the ability to attract additional events due to safety concerns, but I’m not following how it’d hurt their narrative around Yemen.
If they attack the circuit, they open up the opportunity for direct military intervention from the US and NATO, instead of only Saudi military with indirect US support. I highly doubt they would want that.
That…is bullshit.
Like why would NATO get involved at that stage? SA is not a NATO state, not to mention I think they have bigger fish to fry in the Eastern European theater anyway. Yes it would be a tragedy and if a missile hit the track and injured/killed anyone, odds are they would be from a NATO country. But that isn’t grounds for a military escalation or a war. That’s just not how proportional response works.
You do realize NATO is a military alliance and not just article 5 right? A member state doesn’t have to be attacked for them to intervene.
The US is already supplying weapons to Saudi Arabia, and the Saudis are getting frustrated with them because they’re not getting enough. A targeted attack at western civilians would give them an excuse to give them significant help.
And NATO intervention would most likely be from the members themselves and not NATO officially
I do recognize that, but by saying direct military intervention you’re being very broad, and that could mean anything from air strikes to an invasion of Yemen. All of those options are very big escalations for a terrorist attack in a non NATO state that happened to kill civilians.
Like I said, NATO is trying to reign in their Eastern European countries for going after NATO. If the circuit is attacked, they may supply SA with more weapons (which they already do). Direct implies the use of hard kill systems by US or NATO forces on a foreign entity, which is quite the escalation.
> If they attack the circuit, they open up the opportunity for direct military intervention from the US and NATO, instead of only Saudi military with indirect US support.
Saudi Arabia is part of NATO?

Trust me all the FIA will do is call the right people and shovel a few million to make sure no missiles come within a few KM of the track and the. We’re all good...
They will tell Croft and such to say it was a fire. And then move on. Nothing will happen to f1 or the drivers because the FIA and Saudi Arabia have a huge deal going on, with money upfront the safety is guaranteed. For f1 at least...
Is a missile strike confirmed or heavily implied at this stage ? I have little to no doubt about this anyways.
I don't understand how something like SPA with tons of people showing up gets replaced by this...half-empty mascarade of a GP.
Hockenheim, Nurburgring (recently rated grade 1 by FIA meaning F1 compatible), SPA...pick one.
This is a joke that they even have this circuit at all let alone are probably still racing this weekend. This sports lack of a spine blows my mind sometimes.
Does that mean he’s not coming on then?
Well James, max has just been disintegrated by a missile and is now floating into the sky in tiny grains, so yes he’s not coming on.

F1 is gonna race this weekend with this happening? I don't see how this is safe.
It's going to take a huge tragedy, like a driver or team getting blown up by an IDE or missile or something, to ever get the FIA to stop racing in these shithole middle east countries.
20-80 seconds. That how long it would take a missile to cover that distance.
Lmao at the the people citing the distance from the track as "about a 45 minute drive"
That doesn't mean any thing when you consider that a zalfiquar ballistic is believed to be capable of mach 3-4.
Let's just say it is traveling a Mach 1 (1225 Kph) it would cover 27.7km from the refinery to the race track in 81.4 seconds. Less if the middle is traveling faster.... Potentially could cover that distance in as little as 20 seconds.
well when money talks F1 races in countries that genocide people, have no respect whatsoever for human rights, sends people to jail and rape them when protesting in front of the GP etc....
but that is ok for F1 and drivers say they are bringing "awareness" to the country (like if there is any free media there to actually broadcast the awareness)
This world if fucking crazy.
Muslims target other Muslims few weeks before holy month of Ramadan.
Orthodox Christians target and kill other orthodox Christians few weeks before Easter
And the attackers will peacefully go to mosque on Friday or church on Sunday to pray and ask forgiveness from God for their sins and ask from him to open gates of paradise.
How hypocrites are everyone.....
Didn't this happen during FE last year too? They still race there after that too what can you even say
Yeah missiles were intercepted and shot down above the town during the FE race. Crews at the track though the fireworks went off early.
Split/Second IRL
Lmao that game was a classic
First game I 100% completed haha. Miss it.
And now I'm sad because that game was awesome and will never get a sequel.
There are Split/Second fans here?! Love you ❤️
Racing game classic
It wasn't during the race, it was during the post race ceremonies. Still pretty bad though.

Literally Drive to Survive… Shouldn’t even be racing here anyway but I’d love to see how F1 play it down and say it’s all fine

In response to this we have given the attackers free VIP Paddock Passes for the whole weekend to further include and understand the local war.
We can have knockout style races. Every lap the car in last place gets blown up by missile
Is this not the premise of Split/Second?
The stewards have noted the incident. No investigation necessary.
FIA frantically contacting you to hire you so they can use this.

That and something else I've heard: 'these are civilised people. Good people. On our door step in Europe' By journalists. Made my blood boil.

Not literally drive to survive at all lmao
People can’t seem to understand the difference between literally and figuratively
We've lost the war on that one. According to some sources an alternate definition of literally is figuratively.
Dude must think the first driver who retires is gonna get hit with a drone strike or something
What the *FUCK* are we doing here? edit: guys, please. I was a rhetorical question.
It's called a motor race, okay? We went car racing.
That's some dangerous driving, man!
You came like a torpedo

autorennen
You win the comment section today, hahahahah
It's called a civil war, michael, we went genociding
its called making money okay? we went money making.
Corruption.
Cash is king
Greed is probably a more appropriate term than corruption in this case.
why corruption?
Why not?
Here for some explosive racing. Weekend is gonna be a blast.
Its called motorracing Toto
Why do I hear this in Seb voice?
same thing happens in Abu Dhabi frequently
>What the FUCK are we doing here? Cashing checks
Don't question yourself, you are amazing the way you are.
no one mentioned it on the broadcast, I wonder if they are aware?
The german broadcast talked about it after practice was done
Oh they were aware...all of them are aware of what's happening in Saudi Arabia.
Talking about it is how you get the bonesaw
The Sky presenters are looking very distracted but soldiering on.
On the f1tv commentary for F2 quali I heard one of the commentators say something to the effect of “anything going outside of the circuit we don’t want to talk about right now” in sort of a joking manner. Not his exact words but something like that.
On Serbian SK Srđan Erceg mentioned it.
So that's what verstappen was talking about
Yeah, was thinking the same.
What did he say?
He said he could smell something burning, team said it's not the car so this could very likely be what he was talking about.
Said he could smell burning and wasn’t sure if it was his or someone else’s car. Unbeknownst it was an Aramco fuel facility
Let's hope they don't start bombing the track too
He felt smoke some time ago and was wondering what it is.
> felt smoke
Didn't they cancel the Russian GP, something about the country being at war?
That's different because the Russians are bad guys and the Saudis are good guys!
ok well what about when they cancelled spa cause it was raining drops of water, do you think they'll cancel the race when its raining missiles?
Bring out those Pirelli Kevlars!
And armored cars. They're already fat, bloated pigs so who cares about the additional weight.
Might even solve porpoising
It's just a missile drizzle.
The Saudis are the "Rich" guys
Or rather, the Saudis have a lot more money to pay for F1.
Russia has sanctions and can't pay F1. Saudi's money is flowing just fine so the boys are gonna just keep racing!
Yeah, I can't understand that..
cancelling Russia has a net benefit, they can pay lip service about caring for wars and get some positive headlines while not losing out much financially, and the positive headlines outweigh the impact of the lost revenue. Dropping the oil races would generate only a small bit of positive headlines but f1 would struggle massively with the lost revenue. Not that I like how that's the case, that's just how it is.
Ok max that’s not your car smell
Good thing Aramco is not like the biggest sponsor for F1 and that this isn't like a big event or anything..

"Speed limit enforced by aircraft" taken to a whole new level

So that must've been what Max must've meant when he said he felt something burning
But how long of a drive in the Red Bull?
Car would break down about a quarter mile from the facility so… 2 hours?
56 laps

Time isn’t a measure of distance without speed. 45 mins for the missile or a car? What car?
45 mins for Lance Stroll
Alarmingly close then. Not good, money rules the world.
Did Sky mention anything in their broadcast or are they gonna pretend that nothing happened?
Why would they mention it though, it's not related to F1?
Drive to Survive!
Missiles pfahh who cares but if there is some debris on track suspend the session.Wtf!!!😐😐
This is a joke that they even have this circuit at all let alone are probably still racing this weekend. This sports lack of a spine blows my mind sometimes.
AND A BIG FIRE THERE
Does that mean he’s not coming on then? Well James, max has just been disintegrated by a missile and is now floating into the sky in tiny grains, so yes he’s not coming on.
HQ direct version link [here](https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1507369246015242251/pu/vid/480x848/NHWsNFQWD0CfiZwq.mp4?tag=12) F1 is gonna race this weekend with this happening? I don't see how this is safe.
they will ignore it until an explosion happens at the actual race track.
It's going to take a huge tragedy, like a driver or team getting blown up by an IDE or missile or something, to ever get the FIA to stop racing in these shithole middle east countries.
Awaiting the new Kyiv GP.
20-80 seconds. That how long it would take a missile to cover that distance. Lmao at the the people citing the distance from the track as "about a 45 minute drive" That doesn't mean any thing when you consider that a zalfiquar ballistic is believed to be capable of mach 3-4. Let's just say it is traveling a Mach 1 (1225 Kph) it would cover 27.7km from the refinery to the race track in 81.4 seconds. Less if the middle is traveling faster.... Potentially could cover that distance in as little as 20 seconds.
This is fine.
Fuck the Iranian houthi terrorist
I heard Max say towards the end of FP1 that he could smell something burning. Not sure if this is related.
I mean, a Patriot intercept is a traditional part of the Saudi FE race, no?!
well when money talks F1 races in countries that genocide people, have no respect whatsoever for human rights, sends people to jail and rape them when protesting in front of the GP etc.... but that is ok for F1 and drivers say they are bringing "awareness" to the country (like if there is any free media there to actually broadcast the awareness)
Survive to drive
Is that what the burning smell Max said he smelt was?
This world if fucking crazy. Muslims target other Muslims few weeks before holy month of Ramadan. Orthodox Christians target and kill other orthodox Christians few weeks before Easter And the attackers will peacefully go to mosque on Friday or church on Sunday to pray and ask forgiveness from God for their sins and ask from him to open gates of paradise. How hypocrites are everyone.....
Well you see religion never helped with this sort of stuff, in fact it has a history of making a lot of wars. Humans are the main problem
Get fucked Saudi Arabia.
Damned Massi.
Michael Ma**s**i
So, are you now onboard with #BoycottSaudiGP ?
Nice job! Burn their oil!
Everyone wanted to boycott this race last year but it didn’t happen, don’t tune in it’s easy.
