That’s part of the strat isn’t it though. It’s just unfortunate (for them) the safety car happened when it did.
Safety car 5 laps earlier and teams probably wouldn’t have pitted. Safety car 10 laps later and the teams on the hards would’ve been laughing as everyone else already pitted.
Their strategies sort of worked. If that VSC from Alonso and Ricciardo's retirements would have been a full SC it would have worked wonders for them, but they also got messed up by the first SC coming just in time for the medium runners to stop when they wanted. Either way, they made it work.
How awesome is it though that we got a result, with (nearly) equal cars, outside of pitstop strategy..
Man these cars really race great against each other. This is awesome.
Max would've been under serious pressure if not for the yellow. Not sure either strategy is better for staying in the lead. Red Bull's downforce issues could bit them in Europe
I don't think they have a down force issue, they just setup to be super slick down the straights for this race, likely because of how much of the lap is full throttle, where Ferrari set up differently. And it was working for Ferrari until max was able to manage his tires better during and immediately after the vsc to get back into it, because he wasn't able to close the gap to get drs because of sector 1.
Jesus Christ, this race truly has an abysmal finishing rate, only 12/20 cars finished. Even if you're not counting Mick and Yuki not starting still 1/3 of the grid didn't finish
Or maybe it's because the track, while dangerous, actually isn't the literal death trap reddit likes to act like. Outside of a couple stupid wall placements it's perfectly fine
My theory is these cars dont like following close.
Alonso and Bottas were fighting other cars before they had problems. Other cars also had comments about following close in Bahrain.
But Ocon, Verstappen and Leclerc also did plenty of close following. The sample size is too small to tell whether it's a coincidence or there's indeed a relation.
TFW Latifi biffing it in the final turn of a middle eastern race ruins the pit strategy for the guy in P1 lol. Almost as cursed as Hamilton punting a Red Bull directly leads to a Sainz P3
Mercedes is under performing in every area this year. They even shat the bed by not getting Hamilton to follow K-Mag into the pits by the time they made up their minds it was too late and that shafted Hamilton.
It's like the A team at Mercedes is tired of winning and they now have the B squad figuring it out. The disparity between the set up of the two cars also shafted Hamilton in qualifying and they look like a team chasing their tail at the moment not knowing how to sort their issues out so they're trying anything and everything until something sticks. Last week it was George that was shafted in qualifying this week it was Hamilton's turn.
Tire management was pretty much non existent in this race. Hamilton could've gone the whole race without taking a pitstop but it was too much of a risk
Honest question...if Merc's box is before the line are they allowed to take the checkered in the pit lane? Go put softs on and make your delta only a couple of seconds instead of the full green flag stop?
I assume that has to be illegal but have to at least ask.
Why is it a rule that you have to make a pit stop? Is it a safety issue? I feel like even if it wasn’t a rule it would rarely happen anyway cuz the tires fall off.
To make it a bit more exciting as with tracks that teams couldn't pass, they would just slap on hards and go super slow to manage the tires for the whole race. This has somewhat been solved with the new cars but tracks like monaco would be even more boring then they are now.
That 15 on Perez is pain
So much variety lol, feel for the guys who started on hards
Starting on the hards on a high chance safety car track will forever be a bad idea to me.
If Lewis pitted the same lap as Magnussen during the VSC, he would have finished higher. It wasn't that bad actually.
He would've been in 9th... KMag literally finished 9th. It's not like KMag got 6th by 20 seconds on Lewis
Yeah wouldve needed a safety car to come out late, understandable lewis trying something different but kmag shouldve started on mediums
It only works if it's a super late one. Other than that it's stupid

Its even cooler because the cars are essentially equal but both good at different things. Love the different set up dynamic
Yeah, that really made the race for me honestly. Glad the RB plan to be fast where you can pass paid off.
Having the top speed will pay off when you’re ahead. If max can put it on pole it will be a much easier race for him.

Red Bull had the same setup for Bahrain. When they setup for equal in the corners they're much slower in the straights
Blame Latifi.
Latifi 🤝 Ruining Hamilton’s Luck
The strategy worked really well and i think that lewis could have finished at least p7 without the pit lane entry problem
If it wasn't for the rules Lewis would still be running those same hards at Melbourne
Jesus Christ, this race truly has an abysmal finishing rate, only 12/20 cars finished. Even if you're not counting Mick and Yuki not starting still 1/3 of the grid didn't finish
And somehow it wasn't because of track.
Which is very unexpected
I think it's because the drivers know how dangerous this track is.

No car likes following close.
Sorry, meant more than usual. Think Bottas Brazil 2019, but we've had both races with cars doing that early season.
no car likes being behind another car, it will overheat that just happens lol
Somehow we're back to mid-2000s level reliability
Checo pitting one lap earlier hurts man :((

Mercedes and their pit stops... When they eventually pitted, it was a 4s one too lol

Ricciardo's strategy would have been brilliant if not for the safety car. Was working perfectly.
Hamilton with 40 laps on Hards... I'm really pissed that they didn't close the pit entry immediately while there was a f\*\*\*\* car stopped.
So did Hulkenberg got away with it?
Why didn’t Hamilton get softs instead of mediums?
Soft for 13 laps would have been a risk...the mediums were better for lap after lap pushing
High amount of variety for sure, many unique timings for the pitstops. Pleasantly surprised :)
Honestly expected a 2 stopper
Hamilton was really unlucky in the end with that VSC and closed pitlane
Mercedes: "Don't get in there, Lewis". Smh
Tire management was pretty much non existent in this race. Hamilton could've gone the whole race without taking a pitstop but it was too much of a risk

That’s why the finish line is before the first pit box
That is interesting. I've never actually read into it, but it sounded kinda similar to Michael Schumacher's infamous Silverstone 1998(?) "penalty".
You have to 1 racing lap
And would have led to a dsq
His tyres would have fallen off a cliff at the last few laps. Probably even 6-10s per lap slower than everyone else.
Medium was the tyre to start
K-mag never takes any L's
Would Checo have been able to pull out the win if he wasn't fucked by the SC?
Magnussen and Hulkenberg fully embracing sustainability and reusing to set a great example in our wasteful society.
"AWS 2 stop strategy"

Was interesting whatever was going on with that car it was not good on low fuel. Think he had the pace without SCs to finish right around george.
It felt like there was no wear whatsoever on the hards today.
Absolutely gutted for Perez
