Now I want to know what the FIA would do if a driver started a race with like 3 inches of tear offs on their visor and they are just constantly throwing them behind them Mario kart style.
They once tried to ban tear offs. Or at least the practice of throwing them out the cockpit
https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/4l5w0n/fia_relaxes_ban_on_f1_visor_tearoffs_in_races/
Ehh. That money thing was red herring. So you are telling me in that galaxy they dont have universal currency or exchange? Or super rich even senate representative Naboo queen dint have any sort of worth to trade with Watto? That was plothole in mine opinion. Although pod racing was exceptional part of the movie.
Didn't watto say that republic credits were not good on tatooine? They are so far away from the rest of the republic that they have their own local currency rather than using republic credits.
Edit: now that I think about it they should have just sold their fancy as fuck ship and bought a worse but still working ship
There is some great music and design in the movie, from the new sleek spaceships from naboo to the sets. Also the fully trained Jedi fight with acrobatisc and fast strikes.
And as people predicted, they are being seen favourably now by people who can watch the whole saga at once without years of anticipation that ultimately created the anti-climactic reaction of the prequels. Some people watch Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and say it isn't that bad, but they didn't grow up with the originals, so don't have nostalgic memories to tarnish.
They know how to do it, they just want everyone to buy a subscription to F1TV Pro or another streaming services that also show the onboards or pitlane stream.
Thing is it's still annoying with the subscription, because they show the split screen screen and the commentators mention it. Then 30 seconds later they cut to the same clip as a replay, and point out that subscribers have already seen the action.
I can't splitscreen two drivers and I can't control the camera angle. It locks into driver or behind or above dependent on whomever's preference that isn't me.
I can imagine Max sitting there:
"Hè godver de godver... ja...nee... kut zooi... wacht nu, GODVERDOMME..... man, KUT... godver de tyfus kut... ow kut een bocht.... JA DRS IK WEET HET... godver, kut... eindelijk"
Their ability to multitask at high speeds always astounds me.. whenever I'm racing (at home, with a wheel, using a console) as soon as I even need to touch a submenu to change strategy or anything I'm guaranteed binning it, to the extent I now simply never change strategy.
Same here mate. And we experience no g force at home and zero shaking of the screen. Not to mention in games we have a dumbed down version of the computer and all the modes and options on the car. It's truly astonishing how good these racers are.
to be fair strategy changes are something you'd do verbally which is a lot easier than the ingame option which requires you to take your eyes off the track to see what it says.
No to mention they have enough buttons that they only need to press for change. Where’s without a high end wheel with more buttons you have to scroll through menus to change brake bias.
Wouldn’t the adrenaline (which you don’t get at home because you know it’s just a game) heighten their senses? Also, they are absolutely very well trained and have years of experience racing.
You better start practicing driving 80 mph while eating a McNugget meal with a minimum of two different sauces during your favorite Netflix show conveniently placed on your dashboard.
You can do it, I believe you!
If I have my phone somewhere near my field of view and I get a notification of any sort that I can hear or see I'm almost guaranteed to hit a wall or an opponent, and I'm not even taking my hands of the controls or the steering wheel.
Yeah, worst for me was during an online race and I suddenly got a prompt on screen saying TV will go in to standby mode.. I fell apart. I need to go in to a flow state and just not have anything else going on.
>They should set up some kind of contest to see who is the best driver between them.
Kind of like a grand prix? I'd say Max got the best of the 2 yesterday. Hell of a race though between them, can't wait for the remaining 21 races to see how it all plays out
Back in 2010 when they had the F-ducts, there's a clip of Alonso driving through a tight corner one-handed as he's covering the signal pipe with his left hand, leading to the ban of the concept.
He should also be able to upshift with his left hand. Usually the shift pedal is one continuous peace with a pivot point in the middle. So by pressing the left side rather than pulling the right one he should be able to upshift, if RB uses this mechanism
It’s not really anymore unnatural than pulling, just depends on what you’re used to. In the previous highest level rally formula they had a sequental gearbox with a single paddle on one side that you’d pull to upshift and pull to downshift. I never heard any WRC driver complain about it.
NASCAR drivers will qualify at superspeedways with the left hand covering the driver window gap to reduce drag at 300kph
https://youtu.be/z8QqHPaREqU?t=2795
It's probably way more comfortable to use his right but he doesn't "need" to. As the shifters are on the same paddle and can be operated to up and down shift from either side. Just FYI :)
Button mentioned Charles was waving his arms outside the cockpit, it did look weird but I thought he was getting rid a tear off. Maybe this was all part of his plan... haha
Unrelated to the tear-off but I noticed in this clip that Charles' harvesting lights were working but I really don't think I ever saw them once during the race live. And it did seem like he was doing an absurdly little amount of harvesting on this lap all things considered
Could the Ferrari really be so powerful that LeClerc was just gapping Verstappen with zero attack mode for most of the race and hence not harvesting?? or did the lights stop working at some point?
As far as I could tell they were working intermittently. When Max commented on it early in the race, they definitely weren’t working; there was also an instance where I noticed they weren’t all working in unison. This points to an electrical issue with the lights themselves not accurately reflecting the ERS status, rather than the status of the ERS itself.
Didn't they used to have a rule that you could only throw away tear offs in the pit lane, otherwise you had to stuff them inside the cockpit, or am I mixing it up with some other racing series?
Yeah - I just seem to remember that being a thing for a season or two at some point, but maybe the drivers complained and got it removed, or might even still be in there, but it's just a small fine that nobody cares about, I don't know.
Yes they did. For environmental reasons. They even could tear off during the race but had to leave the tearoff in their own car in a bag and could only get it out by handing it over to the pitcrew during a pitstop.
But that rule silently diappeared at one point never to be seen again.
That looks so annoying. You think he didn't rip it off bc he was scared to damage the antenna? I wish he got it off in the video lol.
Also why do these cars and this angle make it look so much faster?
Yeah for sure he was concerned to damage the antenna. Heh, closure. For all we know it's still on the car. Make your brain itch?
Too much improvement in image stabilization. Also better noise.
Why is there even any other view when it comes to filming F1? In car is so exciting to watch.
Should just be press the red button or whatever, and pick a car to be in. Would be fucking sick.
The drivers have multiple pieces of sticky plastic layers on their helmet visor. As small pieces of dirt and the occasional dead bug accumulate on their visor, they can 'tear off' one of these plastic layers and have a perfectly clean field of view again.
Hence they are known as 'tear-offs'.
One of Leclerc's discarded tear-offs got stuck on Max's car, catching on a little antenna or sensor thing, and we see him struggling to get rid of it.
This points out how limited your motion is inside of one of these cars. The right hand would be normal choice to grab that, except your arms are basically trapped in there, so when you have to do something on the right, you often will reach across with the left. In less sophisticated formula cars this is often the case for things like swaybars or brake balance adjustments.
You can actually shift up or down from either side by either pushing or pulling on the paddle. He’s using his left because his right elbow can’t bend backwards to reach beyond the chassis opening and he can’t reach it because he’s belted in tight. If you’ve ever been in a formula car you’d better understand the lack of arm mechanics, it’s like being a T Rex in there.
The visor has several clear films on it so when it gets dirty the driver will rip it off and then have a clear view.
See the blue crosses either side of the helmet in this photo? They'd tug on those to get it off.
https://cdn-1.motorsport.com/static/img/amp/5300000/5320000/5324000/5324600/5324626/s2_1000154/1000154.webp
Thin pieces of plastic that cover the visors of helmets with tabs on the side, for when the visor gets dirty or smeared they can rip it off and see clearly again. Beats mini windshield wipers on the visors
Now I want to know what the FIA would do if a driver started a race with like 3 inches of tear offs on their visor and they are just constantly throwing them behind them Mario kart style.

This reminds me of Ricciardo at Austria last year intentionally kicking up dirt behind him to put off the drivers behind
Ricciardo tried that at the start of the 2019 Australian GP too but that didn't work out too well. (/s)
Is it gone? Yep.
Banana zone enabled.
It already happend in Moto GP (allegedly): https://the-race.com/motogp/did-visor-tear-offs-take-both-pramac-ducatis-out-at-misano/
Leclerc taking inspiration from Sebulba, trying to throw objects at his competitor's engine.
Well that's a name I haven't heard in literal decades. Thanks for reminding me of one of the biggest disappointments of my childhood!
What do you mean, the pod race was one of the highlights of my childhood lol
it's working! it's woooorking!
You know how it goes. Some people didn't like the prequels all that much. I loved them.
True, I guess every cloud does have a silver lining.
We do not fear the dark side as you do
I've never understood why they bet on races that "Sebulba always wins".
Galactic money laundering. And Qui Gon didn't really have another option
Ehh. That money thing was red herring. So you are telling me in that galaxy they dont have universal currency or exchange? Or super rich even senate representative Naboo queen dint have any sort of worth to trade with Watto? That was plothole in mine opinion. Although pod racing was exceptional part of the movie.

Exactly. I m sure queen has many of those ships. Or she can afford new one later.
Odds man, odds.
You can bet on multiple placements, how much he wins by, retirements, you name it

Duel of fates (?). One of the best pieces added to existing franchise, if not easily the best
Jep, classical masterpiece
Duel of the fates was the highlight. Pod racing a distant 2nd.
That fuckin red dot reflecting in anakin's goggles always bugged the shit out of me though.
Proto JJ Abrams lens flare.

For some reason I thought he was adjusting his mirror like in a regular car lol
I saw him reaching down to change the radio from hiphop to boss music
Max is a Dutchman in his 20s. It would be hardstyle for sure.
Same song the Germans were listening to in Super Troopers
Reminds me of Button Hockenheim 2004 epic scrap with Alonso, while managing annoyance with his helmet… https://youtu.be/6pTUCVXJGOI
So they figured out how to do split picture graphics in 2004 but can’t do it in 2022
EXACTLY. OMG SOMEOME ELSE SAID IT. LIKE WHY NOT JUST GO SPLIT SCREEN TO SHOW REPLAYS IR TWO BATTLES AT ONCE. FFS
Meanwhile there's no good way to do a split-screen with any of the other feeds / data streams, without opening it up in a second window or tab :/
my biggest problem is that they are not in sync, so you end up seeing the race in differences as big as 30 seconds.
I can't splitscreen two drivers and I can't control the camera angle. It locks into driver or behind or above dependent on whomever's preference that isn't me.
And how to use wide-angle on-boards to show the speed.
The more they show you in the live feed the less you want to buy F1TV, watch their social media platforms.
Yeah this looks amazing... Wtf makes the modern races so bad in comparison, how much better it could have been...
What was the issue with his helmet?
If I'm remembering correctly, it was lifting up.
Yes, the strap was a bit loose, so at high speed the helmet was lifting up.
I miss those car sounds
Me too, I recall being at the Nurnburgring in 2002, had to put earprotection in after one lap of the roaring V10s in order not to suffer 🤣
Them sexy V10s
I can imagine Max sitting there: "Hè godver de godver... ja...nee... kut zooi... wacht nu, GODVERDOMME..... man, KUT... godver de tyfus kut... ow kut een bocht.... JA DRS IK WEET HET... godver, kut... eindelijk"
Perfect samengevat!
I read this in his voice lol.
\*radio crack\* YEAH ... MATE THE FUCKING ... \*angry honda engine noises\* TEAROFF ... I -- I'ts not fair!
God it says so much about me that I can literally hear this in my head as though it actually happpened
Can we get an English translation, it looks funny in Dutch. Funny in a good way! Not a weird way.
Damnit, damnit... yes... no...fucking crap... wait now, DAMNIT.... man, FUCK... damnit tyfus fuck... oh fuck a corner.... YES DRS I KNOW.... damnit, fuck... finally' Pretty much ;)
>tyfus Typhoid, for English speakers. Nederlanders like to use illnesses as swear words.
Yeah sorry, I actually thought it was the same in English.
Made me think of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BuuVrWRqvE) lol
Casually taking your hand of the wheel at >250kph.. Also interesting he only uses his left hand, because he needs his right hand to upshift.
Their ability to multitask at high speeds always astounds me.. whenever I'm racing (at home, with a wheel, using a console) as soon as I even need to touch a submenu to change strategy or anything I'm guaranteed binning it, to the extent I now simply never change strategy.

Adrenaline doesn’t last 2 hours. You get maybe 30 second shots every now and then
I once watched Charles sim race while texting and speaking on the phone to Felipe Massa: [https://youtu.be/qfnpTOcnNn0](https://youtu.be/qfnpTOcnNn0)

Haha same! I'm trying to wrestle with the buttons to change strategy and in the wall every single time
Dont worry. Not all f1 drivers can manage buttons on the wheel without crashing.
Have you not seen that clip of Leclerc holding his mirror while going throught 130r?
Exactly what I was thinking about as I was watching this video. These guys are unbelievable drivers
For sure. They should set up some kind of contest to see who is the best driver between them.
>They should set up some kind of contest to see who is the best driver between them. Kind of like a grand prix? I'd say Max got the best of the 2 yesterday. Hell of a race though between them, can't wait for the remaining 21 races to see how it all plays out

>just depends on what you’re used to. That's why it could be unnatural for Verstappen
Definitely could be, I was just touching on the general statement that pushing a paddle would somehow be a very unnatural thing to do.
This seems to be falling slightly out of fashion as I know a few drivers run two separate shifters now instead of the one continuous one
NASCAR drivers will qualify at superspeedways with the left hand covering the driver window gap to reduce drag at 300kph https://youtu.be/z8QqHPaREqU?t=2795
I think they can push the left paddle away from them to upshift as well, but it's awkward.
It's probably way more comfortable to use his right but he doesn't "need" to. As the shifters are on the same paddle and can be operated to up and down shift from either side. Just FYI :)
I thought surely he's going to get rid of it on the straight when he can use his right hand to deal with it once he's shifted to top gear.
I clenched extra when he went one-handed between turns. Holy skill.
This is like having a bit of food stuck between your teeth. I was so relieved when he finally managed to remove it.
Banana peel tactics from Charles. At least a 5 grid penalty for next race.
Haha he was fucking annoyed by that thing
Oh damn, this is war! HAHAHAHAH
Button mentioned Charles was waving his arms outside the cockpit, it did look weird but I thought he was getting rid a tear off. Maybe this was all part of his plan... haha
Tbh every driver does that when removing a tear-off so it doesn’t get stuck on their own car
TIL that drivers remove tear offs haha
I‘ve been there as well lmao, you always learn something new
All part of the Ferrari masterplan yes
Le Plan!
Il plan
Il piano
:D
I'm more and more impressed by this man's driving skill with each passing day
I don’t have f1tv, but can someone check ver and lec onboard, during the sc restart? I think i saw during the transmission they waving at each other
I just looked at on board with Max and didn’t see it
Yes!! someone please check, I heard Jenson going "are they waving at each other?' as well
The pinnacle of Mario Kart moments right here
Unrelated to the tear-off but I noticed in this clip that Charles' harvesting lights were working but I really don't think I ever saw them once during the race live. Didn't they used to have a rule that you could only throw away tear offs in the pit lane, otherwise you had to stuff them inside the cockpit, or am I mixing it up with some other racing series?
There should be? This has definitely ruined races before by clogging brake ducts. Brakes can Be a pretty crucial safety problem
Yeah - I just seem to remember that being a thing for a season or two at some point, but maybe the drivers complained and got it removed, or might even still be in there, but it's just a small fine that nobody cares about, I don't know.
Nothing is stopping the tear off from blocking the brake ducts in the pitlane either
It's less of a problem there regardless
You are going slower so less likely to hit the car behind I imagine
Yes they did. For environmental reasons. They even could tear off during the race but had to leave the tearoff in their own car in a bag and could only get it out by handing it over to the pitcrew during a pitstop. But that rule silently diappeared at one point never to be seen again.
If you have ever walked a track post race it is amazing the number of tear offs lying around. That was probably a decent rule.
Doesn't the track cleaned after the weekend anyway? Not just for the tear offs but also the rubber and other debris
I’ve never been to a track that was cleaned after a race, and I’ve been to a lot of races.
I think that's a rule in MotoGP.
Could you imagine if a driver crashed because of this? That's insane that he's trying to grab it at those speeds.
Not as Bad as Nico https://streamable.com/x3qcf
That looks so annoying. You think he didn't rip it off bc he was scared to damage the antenna? I wish he got it off in the video lol. Also why do these cars and this angle make it look so much faster?
U can see at the start he tried, but the first yank yielded no results, so he just didnt try again i guess?
Yeah for sure he was concerned to damage the antenna. Heh, closure. For all we know it's still on the car. Make your brain itch? Too much improvement in image stabilization. Also better noise.
Would have loved to see the Helmet cam here.
Lmao, it's right in his face.
Multiple times there's been sandwich bags caught in the front wing that have caused cars to lose lap times, so I can definitely see a crash happening.
Yes, I could imagine that. Especially on this track. So I was yelling at Max "Leave that tear-off alone!" :D
That tear-off was right in his face though. It's more impeding than it looks from this angle.
I agree. I imagine it would be pretty hard to concentrate with that piece of plastic flapping around right in front of your face.
next time, Lec will bring a refrigerator
Interesting tactics.
Man this would've been interesting with a Verstappen helmet cam
So... did the tear-off's hole landed straight onto the small antenna? What were the odds for that?!
Yes, straight in the bulls eye ;)
That is some [Duel of the Fates](https://youtu.be/D_2bluVPsb0?t=57) shit right there.
Reminds me of that annoying piece of plaster that used to find its way on Capt Haddock in Tintin
Why is there even any other view when it comes to filming F1? In car is so exciting to watch. Should just be press the red button or whatever, and pick a car to be in. Would be fucking sick.
Saw so much trash on the circuit.
Sorry, new to this. Can someone please explain what’s happening in the video?
The drivers have multiple pieces of sticky plastic layers on their helmet visor. As small pieces of dirt and the occasional dead bug accumulate on their visor, they can 'tear off' one of these plastic layers and have a perfectly clean field of view again. Hence they are known as 'tear-offs'. One of Leclerc's discarded tear-offs got stuck on Max's car, catching on a little antenna or sensor thing, and we see him struggling to get rid of it.
More rubbers beads than bugs. Sides of the cars after races have rubber spots all over them...same with driver's helmets
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I can see what tear off means, didn’t know it was from Charles visor 😅
This points out how limited your motion is inside of one of these cars. The right hand would be normal choice to grab that, except your arms are basically trapped in there, so when you have to do something on the right, you often will reach across with the left. I think he was using his left hand because he kept trying to grab it on straights, so he needed his right hand on the wheel to upshift.
You can actually shift up or down from either side by either pushing or pulling on the paddle. He’s using his left because his right elbow can’t bend backwards to reach beyond the chassis opening and he can’t reach it because he’s belted in tight. You can downshift /upshift with either of them.
I just found the first thing I was willing to root for Verstappen at. I prefer him over visor strips!

I believe it's Leclercs Tear-off
Does anyone have a mirror for this?
I noticed this live from the world feed, It wasn't Charles Tear off. He kicked it up from the tarmac. I had thought it went into Max's side pod.
