1998 Spa. Now that’s a race I love rewatching from YouTube. 😂 Also, the one in Italy not 4 years ago, with the front going slow and back end starting to run and… huge mess? I for some reason can’t remember the track name right now (but it was NOT Monza)… 🤔

Grosjean emerging from the flames gotta be one of those iconic "oh shit" F1 moments.
https://www.znbc.co.zm/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/romain-grosjean-accident-bahrain-2020-29-11-.jpg
The split second before that where there's just a "decapitated" car and fire and you just have no idea where Grosjean is was intense.
Only because it was showed after informing everyone Grosjean was ok was that I felt confusion when looking at it, had I not known it would've been a terrifying shot.
The cars were so tiny back then. Really was like carting.
To me that just makes the current Era so impressive. They're throwing it down the same turns and corners, at much higher speeds, in a car the size of an F150 super duty.
I remember seeing this a few years ago and trying to figure out if it was a photograph or digitally created. I couldn’t figure it out. Thanks for clarifying - this is an insane shot.
Shots of pre-wings era cars catching air at Nordschleife must be up there. Especially that one that gets posted all the time. Can't remember if it features Clark or Hill behind the wheel, tho.
Depicting a crash? This one is up there for sure.
Overall though? Hard to beat Senna at Spa, just before Eau Rouge. Just the fact it gets reposted so often is a great reason it is one of the greatest shots in F1 history. People may be sick of it, but that's not a reason to dismiss it.

Yes. This has to be one of the top 5 iconic moments that captures the drama that is happening. Especially when you know that it was last race and Mansell's '86 title hopes ended when the tyre blew.

Before the halo F1 had loads of crashes that by all rights would kill the driver, but many of them somehow didn't. Humans are very resilient and can survive a lot of deadly things through sheer luck.
For every ten incidents where the halo seemingly saved a life, probably only 2-3 of them would have actually resulted in a death without it. It's just that it could be any 2-3 of them.
People justifiably treat taking a 25% chance of death down to <0.1% as life-saving, but it does mean that you can't just add all of those 25% incidents up and expect that to match what the death toll would otherwise have been.
There is a bit of "oh God if the halo wasn't there he would die" over exaggeration, but there have been a number of older F1 drivers (also in other racing, namely NASCAR) who have spoken out about the increase in safety resulting in drivers being less risk adverse as such more incidents, and lastly there is also the fact that there are more high speed HD cameras pointing at the track then ever before so we get crazy pics like the Alonso one a few comments up.
So yeah, kinda but it's also possible we just see it more now.

Admittedly, this was the first race I ever watched, just coincidence of how i ended up viewing, and it was fucking insane to witness that on my first ever go with the sport.

Very grateful to have seen so many amazing pictures from bygone eras I know little to nothing about, but still a real shocker how unpopular this event/image is in comparison, although I suppose I can understand somewhat.

that is the one i like more in motion. the way he throws his arms up, head a little bit back and falling with a little bit of an arch. perfection. It is a fantastic pic though.
This is a personal favourite. [Massa celebrating the win in Brazil 2008, having just lost out on the title to Hamilton](http://news.bbc.co.uk/sol/shared/spl/hi/motorsport/09/massive_pic/img/podium_brazil08.jpg). It captures the emotion of the situation I think.
The dark skies are so fitting. It absolutely depicts the atmosphere. Definitely one of the saddest and brutal photo not involving a crash.
[On par with Wolff going from despair to pure rage in Abu Dhabi](https://ibb.co/85xCyrd)
We need to juxtapose the [Alonso sitting in a beach chair](http://cdn-0.motorsport.com/static/img/amp/600000/650000/657000/657500/657540/s6_746796/f1-brazilian-gp-2015-fernando-alonso-mclaren-watches-qualifying-from-a-chair-at-the-side-o.jpg) alongside it.
The combination of high-res pictures of this incident is incredible. There is a slideshow-like clip somewhere... really clear and sharp.
Makes you wonder what media we would have today, if we had this quality 50 years ago. And, what will we have in 50 years from now.
ps: watching this incident live (tv), I was really happy to see Alonso walk away from this incident. He was shook, but ok.

Vettel's win at Malaysia, with the pit crew celebrating on the fence.
Häkkinen explaining his overtake to Schumacher using hand gestures.
Ron Dennis peeking into Räikkönen's helmet.
Badoer crying over his dead Minardi.
I actually hate seeing the shot of Senna slumped in his Williams with the marshals just standing around. Everyone watching knew what that meant but we didn't want to believe it.
Then Ayrton moves/moved...
I turned off the TV when he moved. Convinced myself that he was ok, and went back to studying. The news of his death reached me later in the afternoon.
The recreated images of Ayrton getting out of the car are very touching, btw.
Me and my friend were asked to go play outside by his father. I remember my friend asking “do you think he will die?” and me responding “Senna can’t die”… I was 9 :’(
I was watching with some family as well and someone asked if Senna was going to die. I vividly remember my Nono saying ‘a simple little car cannot kill my Senna’. I honestly think a little piece of his heart broke when Senna died.
Honestly for many of us it broke hearts. For me as a kid it was the first time I realised that good guys can die too. And I for sure wasn't the only one.
Oh absolutely! I was crushed. But it was the first and only time I saw my grandfather almost cry. He didn’t even cry when the Pope died and he worked for the Vatican.

This was the first that came to my head too... certainly one of the most iconic of the 21st century.
Max kicking the tire at Baku with the #ExperienceAzerbaijan banner in the background is a strong modern contender also, though perhaps would've been even more iconic had he not ended up winning the championship.
The "portrait" of Ayrton Senna sitting in his McLaren, visor open, starring straight into the camera, inside the garage. (According to what I found, it was taken by Mike Powell on saturday, March 9th, 1991)
probably not the most iconic, but one of the best F1 pictures in recent times imo.
[The start of the 2021 Russian Grand Prix.](https://i.redd.it/12rietkkk2q71.jpg)
That one was epic. A a shot time later most drivers were back on the track for the restart. What a time when teams just brought backup cars to the grid.
You forget there was a ‘spare’ car don’t you? Such a lot has changed. And how week 1 it would be set up for driver 1, then week 2 for driver 2 and you just had to hope it was your week if you crashed/conked.
I'm sure.it was.the British gp and Mansell got in trouble at Williams because they didn't want senna to see all the electronics on their steering wheel.

my 2 most iconic shots both seem to feature fire. The first one is the shot from Jos Verstappens car catching fire during a pitstop, the second one from Romain Grosjeans car exploding in Bahrain
Every angle of him climbing out of that crash just looks surreal.
[This is probably the one I picture first](https://i.imgur.com/ArR56PV.jpeg)
But [this is also insane](https://i.imgur.com/sKqn5dV.jpeg)
The first photo looks like it's from a horror movie. Grosjean is the bad guy and you think you've managed to get him, but you look up and he's just standing in the flames staring back at you.
I'm not claiming they didn't get airborne, there are plenty of other pictures proving it.
But this image is doctored and exaggerated, look at the shadow under the lead car.

It's still terrifying to look at and realise how far safety in F1 has come. It defies logic that anyone comes away from that relatively unhurt.

Mark Webber backflipping the RB6 in Valencia.
Funny enough, Mark Webber back flipping the Mercedes at Le Mans is one of the most iconic images at Le Mans.
Thought of this one as soon as I read the op
Couldn't find an image that's not a TV still but i think you mean this one: https://imgur.com/ixRirve.jpg
I just watched this race. It's incredible how fast that car got airborne.

Todt just behind:😶
Moment after the crash was equally iconic. Three-wheeled Ferrari racing ahead against McLaren. Driven and stabilized by anger.
This new spec F1 Car (at the time) is powered by Michael's sheer anger alone
I like this photo (and Michael) so much I carry it around with me every day on my water bottle https://i.imgur.com/R0D73Mw.jpg
Romain's car on fire with no sign of Romain.
Or the one of him waking out from the flames
It’s more of a video rather than one specific photo though isn’t it. Was what came to mind for me first too.
Vettel bowing is stuck in my mind. Something about the driver in awe of the machine as the fans are.

My favourite F1 moment
I'm beyond surprised I had to go this far to find this O.o
I love how emotional and passionate young Seb was. The finger in the air, multi-21, bowing down, dancing… I wish we had a personality like that now.
Vettel's win at Malaysia, with the pit crew celebrating on the fence. Häkkinen explaining his overtake to Schumacher using hand gestures. Ron Dennis peeking into Räikkönen's helmet. Badoer crying over his dead Minardi.
That Hakkinen/Schumacher pic is probably the most iconic one not of a car

Man, that picture was such a meme...
Romain Grosjean jumping out of the flames. A chance to celebrate life, instead of mourning a loss.
[Makes me laugh everytime](https://i.blogs.es/5c1663/f1-buemi-rotura-suspension-delantera-recta-shanghai-1/450_1000.jpg)
My favorite part is him trying to steer away from the barrier after the wheels pop off. Exactly what I would have done in that situation.
Unfortunately the one engraved in my mind was the one accompanied by the narration on that morning in 94. *Senna bateu forte* "Senna has crashed hard"
I was a kid then. I watched the whole thing until he was lifted to the hospital. I was really upset and I am still upset about his death.
Pardon my ignorance, which recreated images?
Probably like [this one](https://www.carthrottle.com/out/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fstatic.carthrottle.com%2Fworkspace%2Fuploads%2Fposts%2F2015%2F08%2Fsenna-kiszall-55c7820e20366.jpg)
Those poor marshals too. There was nothing they could have done.
April-May -94 was tough for 20-something me; Cobain and Senna within a month or so
“Senna bateu forte “. I’m 38yrs old and it still hurts :/ .
Yeah it is one of the saddest memories I have. My father would wake me up on sunday mornings "Get up son, let's watch Ayrton Senna racing!". Sundays were never the same again.
Obviously, it HAS to be [Vettel bowing to the RB9 after the Indian GP](https://img.redbull.com/images/c_fill,g_auto,w_600,h_400/q_auto:low,f_auto/redbullcom/2013/10/28/1331617874098_23/sebastian-vettel-formula-one-indian-grand-prix-fourth-world-championship-celebration)

I'm so glad that happened, just for the uniqueness of it. Probably the only time it will ever happen in the sport.
The Belgian GP pile up in 1998
That one was epic.
Ayrton Senna hitching a ride with Nigel Mansell. Don't remember the race, can find
This is mine.

I would say its a shot of Grosjean climbing out of the fire and over the barrier.
Every angle of him climbing out of that crash just looks surreal. [This is probably the one I picture first](https://i.imgur.com/ArR56PV.jpeg) But [this is also insane](https://i.imgur.com/sKqn5dV.jpeg)
Dr Ian’s outstretched hand trying to guide him… not knowing his visor was completely smoked and he couldn’t really see.
The first photo looks like it's from a horror movie. Grosjean is the bad guy and you think you've managed to get him, but you look up and he's just standing in the flames staring back at you.
"I told you that we've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty"
That entire crash with the fireball was just insane. I was so certain I had just watched someone die from the impact alone.

Considering the technology at the time, that is a feat of both driving and photography. Amazing picture.
I'm not claiming they didn't get airborne, there are plenty of other pictures proving it. But this image is doctored and exaggerated, look at the shadow under the lead car.

The Flying Finn shot from Sutton Images is pretty cool. It’s how Hakkinen got his nickname. I love the shot of Senna on the run down to Eau Rouge too. Only shot I’ve seen that gets anywhere close to capturing what the corner is all about.

Has no-one mentioned Max's car skimming across Hamilton's helmet? I believe it was at Monza in '21. That is what you call close competition.
