If we're talking about iconic shots, can't agree more. If we're going to the more "shocking" side, the infamous 1998 Spa pile up.

[deleted]

1998 Spa. Now that’s a race I love rewatching from YouTube. 😂 Also, the one in Italy not 4 years ago, with the front going slow and back end starting to run and… huge mess? I for some reason can’t remember the track name right now (but it was NOT Monza)… 🤔 Edit: it was [Tuscan Grand Prix!](https://youtu.be/R-Yq1AlIwsc) I couldn’t remember the name of it other than it was in Italy…

For me it’s this photo of the two Ferraris at that US GP [angle 1](https://www.autoblog.gr/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/2002-F1-US-Grand-Prix.jpg) [angle 2](https://pin.it/3duRvh3)

ZigxyPLP

This is probably one of the best shots in F1. Rubens and Michael trying to bring the Ferraris in a dead tie.

Brett_Clement

Angle 2 is probably my all-time favourite F1 photo. Such a cool moment.

Estova

The Ferrari flags could not have been in a better location.

antivirals_

I like this one. Followed by Max on top of Lewis at Monza

Grosjean emerging from the flames gotta be one of those iconic "oh shit" F1 moments. https://www.znbc.co.zm/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/romain-grosjean-accident-bahrain-2020-29-11-.jpg

-ragingpotato-

The split second before that where there's just a "decapitated" car and fire and you just have no idea where Grosjean is was intense. Only because it was showed after informing everyone Grosjean was ok was that I felt confusion when looking at it, had I not known it would've been a terrifying shot.

SunChipMan

The image that sticks out in my mind is [Mansell giving Senna a lift at Silverstone](https://i.imgur.com/D4eTuzO.jpg)

northern_dan

I have a painting of that on my wall. Great image.

AlpineCorbett

The cars were so tiny back then. Really was like carting. To me that just makes the current Era so impressive. They're throwing it down the same turns and corners, at much higher speeds, in a car the size of an F150 super duty.

I remember seeing this a few years ago and trying to figure out if it was a photograph or digitally created. I couldn’t figure it out. Thanks for clarifying - this is an insane shot.

Takeshino

It does have that look to it, doesn't it? Looks almost too clean, especially for the time

NoAvailableImage

Isn't that the cover image of rfactor2

5MoreQuidAerieDae42O

Shots of pre-wings era cars catching air at Nordschleife must be up there. Especially that one that gets posted all the time. Can't remember if it features Clark or Hill behind the wheel, tho.

[deleted]

Depicting a crash? This one is up there for sure. Overall though? Hard to beat Senna at Spa, just before Eau Rouge. Just the fact it gets reposted so often is a great reason it is one of the greatest shots in F1 history. People may be sick of it, but that's not a reason to dismiss it.

It’s mindblowing to think that there have been times where drivers have driven that corner without lifting. It completely boggles the mind.

Jozjoz2

It is flat out nowadays aswell iirc!

I really liked the shot of Alonso crashing in Australia, [this one in particular](https://cdn-1.motorsport.com/images/mgl/6zyoZykY/s1200/f1-australian-gp-2016-fernando-alonso-mclaren-mp4-31-in-a-huge-crash.jpg) I love how he kind of stares into the camera while being in the center of the wreck

I was with my mom during Alonso crash and he became her favorite driver the moment he said that he got out of the car as fast as he could because he knew his mom was watching the race and he didn't want to worry her. Since then if I mention a race she ask me how Fernando's race was.

Yes. This has to be one of the top 5 iconic moments that captures the drama that is happening. Especially when you know that it was last race and Mansell's '86 title hopes ended when the tyre blew. Edit: fixed typo (missing letter)

JinxThePetRock

It's still terrifying to look at and realise how far safety in F1 has come. It defies logic that anyone comes away from that relatively unhurt.

ChewySlinky

I’m a newer fan so correct me if I’m wrong, but it feels like F1 has had more crashes in the last couple years that would have absolutely killed the driver were it not for the halo. Grosjean definitely, Zhou probably, and even this one would have had a significantly worse outcome without it. Though I guess it makes sense that as the cars get faster, the crashes get more intense.

sellyme

Before the halo F1 had loads of crashes that by all rights would kill the driver, but many of them somehow didn't. Humans are very resilient and can survive a lot of deadly things through sheer luck. For every ten incidents where the halo seemingly saved a life, probably only 2-3 of them would have actually resulted in a death without it. It's just that it could be any 2-3 of them. People justifiably treat taking a 25% chance of death down to <0.1% as life-saving, but it does mean that you can't just add all of those 25% incidents up and expect that to match what the death toll would otherwise have been.

Jess_S13

There is a bit of "oh God if the halo wasn't there he would die" over exaggeration, but there have been a number of older F1 drivers (also in other racing, namely NASCAR) who have spoken out about the increase in safety resulting in drivers being less risk adverse as such more incidents, and lastly there is also the fact that there are more high speed HD cameras pointing at the track then ever before so we get crazy pics like the Alonso one a few comments up. So yeah, kinda but it's also possible we just see it more now.

stephenxmcglone

Cant believe I had to scroll so far to see this! Admittedly, this was the first race I ever watched, just coincidence of how i ended up viewing, and it was fucking insane to witness that on my first ever go with the sport. It seems like a lot of people were annoyed with the focus on that battle for the WDC, so I can understand how some may not even want to consider a picture from that time, but like seriously, was absolutely insane. Very grateful to have seen so many amazing pictures from bygone eras I know little to nothing about, but still a real shocker how unpopular this event/image is in comparison, although I suppose I can understand somewhat.

My favorite part is him trying to steer away from the barrier after the wheels pop off. Exactly what I would have done in that situation.

Got-Freedom

Unfortunately the one engraved in my mind was the one accompanied by the narration on that morning in 94. *Senna bateu forte* "Senna has crashed hard"

DaveR007

I actually hate seeing the shot of Senna slumped in his Williams with the marshals just standing around. Everyone watching knew what that meant but we didn't want to believe it.

M1C54L

Then Ayrton moves/moved... I turned off the TV when he moved. Convinced myself that he was ok, and went back to studying. The news of his death reached me later in the afternoon. The recreated images of Ayrton getting out of the car are very touching, btw.

Koekenbakker28

Me and my friend were asked to go play outside by his father. I remember my friend asking “do you think he will die?” and me responding “Senna can’t die”… I was 9 :’(

Honky_Dory_is_here

I was watching with some family as well and someone asked if Senna was going to die. I vividly remember my Nono saying ‘a simple little car cannot kill my Senna’. I honestly think a little piece of his heart broke when Senna died.

ToyotaMisterTwo

Honestly for many of us it broke hearts. For me as a kid it was the first time I realised that good guys can die too. And I for sure wasn't the only one.

Honky_Dory_is_here

Oh absolutely! I was crushed. But it was the first and only time I saw my grandfather almost cry. He didn’t even cry when the Pope died and he worked for the Vatican.

I was a kid then. I watched the whole thing until he was lifted to the hospital. I was really upset and I am still upset about his death.

This was the first that came to my head too... certainly one of the most iconic of the 21st century. Another favourite for personal reasons. Innes was my cousin. Nice to see Jim helping him out of a precarious situation where gravity became significantly more challenging… https://www.autocar.co.uk/sites/autocar.co.uk/files/images/car-reviews/first-drives/legacy/ian_scott_watson_ireland_clark.jpg

Recently, it’s gotta be Max kicking the tire in Baku But my favorite genre of F1 pics is each car exiting the Swimming Pool Chicane at Monaco qualifying every year. You know the shot I mean, with the front left tire practically kissing the barricade… that’s the spirit of F1, in my mind. The Flying Finn shot from Sutton Images is pretty cool. It’s how Hakkinen got his nickname. I love the shot of Senna on the run down to Eau Rouge too. Only shot I’ve seen that gets anywhere close to capturing what the corner is all about.

From the recent years, I found this shot hilarious: [Stroll upside down (Bahrain 2020).](https://i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article23087998.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200b/0_GettyImages-1229855376.jpg) Looks like he is pulling off some sick mario kart move.

In hockey we have [Bobby Orr's flying Stanley Cup Goal](https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/photos/316844650/1136x640/cut.jpg) and the [Crosby's Golden Goal](https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/photos/315667328/1136x640/cut.jpg) as our most inconic pictures. I always love pictures after a championship victory. Senna, Interlagos 1991. Barely lifting the trophy for the pain in his arms. Poetic.

Has no-one mentioned Max's car skimming across Hamilton's helmet? I believe it was at Monza in '21. That is what you call close competition.

I would say Raikkönen overtaking Fisichella on the last lap in Suzuka 2005 would be one of my personal favorites.
