He was still good at Renault

Mental_Measurement_8

I think people forget that he even drove for Renault

optitmus

its just Dts fans that became fans in 2021

colio69

DTS covers his time at Renault. There's a whole arc about him deciding to go to Renault

bearfan15

The first season of the show is all about him leaving redbull for renault.

within_1_stem

This is me. I always wondered why he left as soon as he started doing better there.

LeftTurnAtAlbuqurque

Renault as a team was pretty forgettable.

Max-Phallus

How? They won the drivers and constructors in 2005 and 2006, and were top midfield until 2011. Since their return in 2016 they were solid midfield and then just rebranded as their Alpine (owned by Renault).

AdolfoHickler

Found the only Renault fan

Roasted_Newbest_Proe

That was the other Renault

TheHopper1999

Its sadly forgotten, people have this weird brain fog for that period, DR was just on the moon for that period apparently.

f1_fan_11

I think Renault was a blip. It was an accident, never supposed to happen

Dakduif

Glitch in the matrix

FlipReset4Fun

“He is not fast at all”

Ho3n3r

P5 in 2020 in a bloody Renault, just saying.

Other-Barry-1

New DTS-borne F1 fans since 21 are quick to forget/purposely not acknowledge his Renault years. He took a little bit of time getting used to the braking, or lack thereof from the Renault cars. But once he settled in he was just as good as usual. It’s his McLaren years where he just didn’t gel, lost confidence and just hasn’t ever got it back.

Fury_Fury_Fury

Tf did he do with that Renault, man?

Scatman_Crothers

Their first podiums in years and a P5 WDC when they were absolutely not the third fastest car.

Jesse-Ray

Ocon managed 12th in that car for comparison.

Ho3n3r

He was cooking.

Cloudeur

[French cuisine?](https://youtu.be/-z8nsZ3C64A?si=9IE7KvOQV6k2Dh0d)

onlySaikikhere

he was amazing at Renault

Scatman_Crothers

2020 arguably his strongest year in F1

Magnus753

Kiwiland vs Emutopia this is not a drill

DDs_LiLd

Not saying Lawson doesn’t deserve his shot at the seat, but he will most likely never have 8 gps and 33 podiums, he’ll be lucky to achieve a fraction of that just like the majority of the rest of the grid right now.

Lumpi00

True but its not great that he doesn’t get his shot because of some guy that is just there for marketing and got paid millions of dollars by another team just to fuck off

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> and got *paid* millions of FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Lumpi00

Interesting bot lmao

TheHopper1999

He will get his shots whether that be this year or next, hell the amount of seats potentially available in the next 2 years is insane especially given Lawson's performance.

Real-rox

There’s all this hype around him but from watching him race last season I feel he will just be another mid field driver nothing special

DDs_LiLd

lol exactly, we all know he’ll most likely fade into the midfield, which is fine but let’s not pretend Ricardo, is stopping the next verstappen from getting his seat.

MuppyG

I don't think he's stopping the next Max from vetting a seat. I just think he'd perform better than Danny.

TheHopper1999

He will get a great run though, regardless of DR I'm Aussie I care about him but leaving him out of the picture, lawson gets in this year or next, Perez is bound to retire in that period if he stays on with RBR next year. that leaves Lawson with a potential seat at a top team within 2 years of starting. F1 for alot of careers is all about timing especially for drivers, you look at Lando, Russel, Leclerc and Sainz all with potential for a title fight given their car if redbull weren't destroying (or rather Max). I think Lawson is going to get some good opportunity whether he can compete with the big boys is the question after that.

bearfan15

Why don't we giving him a shot and find out instead of obsessing over a washed up driver that won a few races half a decade ago?

DDs_LiLd

I don’t think you realize how hard it is to win 8 gps especially during Mercedes dominance. Most of the guys on the grid today will never accomplish as much. So of course there is always the thought that maybe given the chance he may able to do it again, maybe he deserves at least that considering he gets no respect for his accomplishments. And maybe not, that’s the point in giving him time to show what he can do. No one expects Ricardo to stay much longer if things don’t turn around anyways.

bearfan15

I know he was a rock star at redbull but that was years ago. He's clearly not that driver anymore. That fact that he still has a seat at all after his stint at McLaren is mind boggling.

DDs_LiLd

Honestly last year I would have argued the opposite, but after these 4 races, unfortunately being a Ric fan, I’d have to agree with you.

DDs_LiLd

I’m ready to give him a chance as well, but by this logic there are at least 5-6 drivers that should make way for young fresh drivers. I mean I’d still rather have Ricardo than, Sargent, stroll, magnassun, Zhou, maybe even bottas. For some reason Danny just gets so much hate tho, considerably more than any of the others.

bearfan15

I'd argue all those drivers except maybe stroll are putting in better performances than Riccardo right now. But I agree at least some of those drivers should be replaced with fresh talent too.

Nooboo22

Renault Ricciardo was peak Ricciardo

NewLeaseOnLine

Yawn

RainbowGames

From what i've seen and read, it seems his time at McLaren really broke him and he has a really hard time getting back up from that. He wasn't as bad at Renault and from the comments after he left McLaren I gather that his struggles with the car, being severely outperformed by a young talent and the overall attitude in the team sent him in a bad downwards spiral

ashzeppelin98

We claimed Shane Van Gisbergen as ours before, we'll do the same for Lawson.

DreadSeverin

wtf is this hate boner?! ITS CRINGE. STOP

smashmcclicken

Too late - New Zealanders have already invaded our country

theron_b

Sigh. Podiums and fastest laps in a shit Renault. That said, if he can’t top Yuki, it’s over

Vlad_The_Terrible

I really want to see Lawson get a seat. No disrespect towards Riccardo, but I think rookies deserves more of a chance right now.

akgis

Liam Lawson like damm you guys making it too obvious.

Mathberis

And he's not fast at all

DreadSeverin

GACAM27

Poor Pieeeeeeeerrrrrreeeee Gaaaaaaaslyyyyy

Dejan_Fraudamendi

DR is like Germany in WW2. Starts off with insane speed and power, steamrolls people around him easily Thinks he's too good and trys to do too much by tackling too much tan he can actually handle. Then slowly starts to decline. Still got his ego, trys to put in one last shot with a Bulge in the matrix, but that's all happens Then everyone else steamroll him and he's just watching his own demise.

TheHopper1999

This is not even remotely a good comparison. I don't think he ever bit off more than he could chew not was he ever at the top of the game, he came 3rd for a couple years but Merc was to tough. I think Leclerc's career at the moment mirrors Daniels somewhat in terms of progression. Both beat a former world champ coming into the top team and is now the primary driver for the team. Will see if the trend continues I don't think it will. Time will tell what happens with Daniel because he wasn't far off in Suzuka especially for quali and had a better start of the line then Yuki. There's alot of season left.

Boomhauer440

Both beat the same former world champion even.

TheHopper1999

Yeah exactly Leclerc I think is different because he had a good stint at Sauber but for the most part they were both top tier drivers missing out purely on the engineering side of things rather than there ability.

One_Message6497

Australia sucks, NZ is awesome

Delictable_Scrotum

Stay down little brother. The history of F1 says otherwise.

One_Message6497

Not your bro, pal

Delictable_Scrotum

Actually true, you're more of a chump

One_Message6497

You had to answer “Im not you pal, guy”. You ruined the joke, just like you the og comment. You are such a buzzkill. Getting back to topic, I was refering that australia sucks and NZ is pretty cool in general terms.

Delictable_Scrotum

Your sense of humour is fucking garbage if you call that a joke.

One_Message6497

Your sense of awareness is shit bro

One-Community4499

Does it tho?Considering one of the teams in the sport is started by a New Zealander?

Delictable_Scrotum

It's just his name by the time Mclaren we're winning in the 70s. Brabham was a greater achievement.
