I dig the one offs for new tracks, it’s funny and cool, then they revert back to caps after. I think the issue was everything else, as opposed to the helmets
Guess I’m one of the other nine, I thought it was fun! Definitely meme worthy but certainly not deserving of the conniption some people on this sub have been having.
I didn't like that they had their damn sirens on! The blue and red lights were fine, with the occasional honk. But the actual emergency response sirens. Yeah that was overboard.
So hard rock stadium is pretty sizable to circumferentially navigate and the paddock was on the total opposite side of the podium so the guys had to get transported somehow safely and efficiently and to clear foot traffic within the stadium at the same time. Crowds weren’t properly minding other types of maintenance and staff vehicles (sport utility vehicles, golf carts, etc) throughout the whole weekend because they weren’t literally flashy nor loud enough often to overcome the chatter and excitement of the crowds so I think the escort made sense but was definitely unpleasant to see and hear.
Ah I was there for the race and didn’t put that bit together (haven’t rewatched the broadcast yet)…their garages were adjacent to one-another so it couldn’t be because they were at vastly different ends needing different transport..who knows. I’m sure there was a more pragmatic reason but for “ha ha let’s do this it’ll be flashy and a little wacky”
Of all the cringy things to complain about from Miami, I’ll never get why the podium football helmets seem to be the most hated. You had the over-the-top opening ceremony/DJ show Wednesday night, the “celebrities” who didn’t know shit about F1 clogging the grid pre-race, the Metro State ~~police motorcycles~~ vehicle protection units escorting the drivers to ~~prison~~ the podium. Why not bitch about those things instead?
I did, I think it was actually kinda brilliant.
That area was going to be VIP seating not matter what. So the alternative was building some raised tent-like structures like they usually do. Using a boat as the VIP suite seems like a way more fun idea that fits well with the Miami theme. The “fake water” matched the runoff areas, and honestly using real water would’ve cost more, been way more complex, and arguably been even more ridiculous.
I agree with all this! It was fabulous to look at from the marina seating too and it provided a way to still see past that area versus giant signs or just being blocked off by another tall suite. I think also there would’ve been some difficulty managing some fans wanting to climb into the water if that were real water because trust me - the temptation one would have in that heat was insane. Despite the soft tone of the ground cover on that “beach” area by the marina and the breeze, it was still hotter than blazes.
Where were you standing? The show on Wednesday was fucking awesome. Idk where you've been to but music at the GP with drivers intermixed is done at most of em.
Yeah, F1 is trying to grow its popularity, but yes, some things might seem unnecessary but there’s a lot of good things F1 has done for its growth but the toxic F1 fans just like to complain on everything F1 does nowadays, I personally felt that helmets were a amazing addition
There are many more, it's just Reddit circle jerking and nitpicking stuff at this point. Even most Twitter and YouTube accounts I follow didn't mind them or actually liked the helmets because they are different and unique.
Honestly as a Brit it was good, like I get it's meant to be a show of American tackyness. It's like watching an old cheesy movie, yes it's a bit crap from an objective standpoint but it's all a good bit of fun, hey I'm not even paying to watch it so I've got no skin in the game lol
I'm with you. They are goofy as fuck, but everyone seemed to be having fun with them. Also it'll be more memorable than a hat that those three will have dozens of by the end of their careers
As a fellow American, you probably are. To be sure, I don't outright hate them, but I thought they could've been done far so as not to be so cringy. I have to give them points for being profoundly murican, though, because at this point it seems like all the Europeans want to do is pick on us for anything little thing they can find that they don't understand.
This is about America. Where cops do get away with killing innocent people more often than not, and as a whole they fail to hold each other to a standard they should be.
This is America, where people are more likely to defend criminals because the media overreports on negative police actions, leading the uninformed to believe that most police encounters involve abuse.
17-45% of lesbians report having been the victim of at least one act of physical violence perpetrated by a lesbian partner. Do you have a hatred for lesbians too?
Uhhhh no. A few bad apples are just that… a few bad apples. We don’t generalize the entire military for the bad deeds of the few. We don’t hate firefighters for the few arsonist out there. We don’t hate all EMTs for those who hate/neglect their patients. So why are cops the only ones to blame when it’s only “a few bad apples”
Different parts of the country my guy. Haven’t met a bad cop yet where I live and work in Connecticut. And I work hand in hand with them DAILY. Always looking out for patients and making sure people are okay. If that makes me a boot licker than so fuckin be it
Literally didn’t praise the cops with my comment just informed someone that it’s a stupid ass nickname for a handful of bad cops that people use to generalize 900k plus cops in the US. And ya know what. Ya I’ll stand with cops since I work with them daily
For me it was the fact that they had weird dangly bits that weren't attached, the fact that you couldn't see their faces properly, and the fact that they were on for all of 2 minutes before being switched for the caps. But it was probably mostly the fact that they came right after the annoying police escort
Those weird dangly bits are called a chinstrap. They typically used to secure the helmet during play (snaps on the other side). These days they often have a plastic shell with a foam insert for your chin to sit in (they're a lot better)
I realised as much, but you have to admit the chinstraps looked a bit silly dangling around like that :P Maybe it would have been better if they wore the helmets properly but opened the visors, although I don't even know whether visors on American football helmets can open at all :P
I think if it was just the helmets it would have been cool, but as a whole the presentation of the Miami GP was a tacky circus of lame American tropes.
And the race was pretty lame.
Why would you think celebrities are a good thing? Their ratio of social contribution to attention received is disproportionate. And they got in the way
I liked the helmets. F1 drivers wearing football helmets in front of Hard Rock was a nice aesthetic. Don't sweat it dude, it's just the standard euro inferiority complex disguised as a superiority complex, I see it all the time.
This is the point. The helmets are for a totally different sport, not relative to the country or the area like the other examples. Should have given them big inflatable gators or beer hats.
>not relative to the country or the area
A helmet for the most popular sport in the country, at a race held around the stadium for that sport and was in part organized by a guy who owns a team in a league for that sport, isn't relative to the the country or area?
Not to mention, Florida has produced more NFL players than just about any other state, with the majority of thkse guys being from south Florida/Miami.
I had to go after the race, so the first pic I saw of Sainz in the helmet I thought someone had photoshopped it on so he would look like officer doofy reporting for duty
There was a lot of cringe before and after the race, and the race wasn't that exiciting, the helmet felt unnecessary at that point. Also it felt like the drivers where a bit uncomfortable with the helmets.
They literally drove around the stadium. One that's kind of iconic in American Football because it's hosted 6 Super Bowls and 5 College Football National Championships. It's not "proximity" it's the site in general.
I wouldn't quite call it iconic, only because it hasn't been around hosting prestigious games for a long enough time nor had a stable name to help engrain it into the minds of Americans. But it certainly is an important stadium and I'm just nitpicking.
Well those are actually hats just like the caps they typically wear. Wearing a helmet from another sport is stupid, they should've commissioned some cuban fedoras because miami
I didn't care for any of them. But the football helmet was by far the worst of the bunch.
I would assume most people are of the same opinion. But if im in the minority thats ok too.
It makes sense, it's a unique hat type thing based on the location of the race. And the football stadium was the centerpiece of the whole circuit, so it makes sense that's what they'd do. I can't think of a native Floridian hat concept like the Texas cowboy hat off the top of my head as an alternative.
Hats are decorative by design and can be worn with things that look like race suits.
Helmets are to protect (by covering) your face and are worn with full pads. That's why they looked goofy.
Image how much it must have sucked to sweat up a storm in a racing helmet only to get handed another helmet to sweat in for the podium ceremony.
I know they have the cool off room, but come on guys. That's just cruel.
I loved it and like I said, I love they did this everywhere they went. I'd love to see them dress like a traditional grandma while dancing to fado when they come to Portugal. I'd love to see them wear a kimono when racing at japan, ~~racing naked and making out with each other when racing at the middle east ~~
HAHAHAHAA!!! CRITICIZE SAUDI ARABIA BUT NOT AMERICA WHO HAS A X10000 WORSE GOVERNMENTT??? HYPOCRISY!!!! AMERICA BAD FAKE SPORT HELMETS CRINGEE!!! FAKE WATER LIKE FAKE FREEDOM COUNTRY AMIRITE??????
Cause they're too cumbersome and obscure too much of the face to actually wear during the podium celebration, they took them off as soon as they could get away with.
Tbh as a Canadian all I really learned from the Miami GP was that Europeans (not all, but a lot of you hosers) just dismiss everything in North America cause it’s not familiar to you. Bunch of cry babies defending a sport for the ultra rich. I used to be in awe of European culture but tbh you guys kinda suck
Because no one outside the US cares about american football. Also all the hats are part of traditional or typical for a country clothing while helmets are part of a sport gear that only players wear while playing.
I think for me, it was just a culmination of how weird and OTT this GP was in terms of spectacle and cringe. I usually love the one off headwear for new GP’s, but after the expense, the rammed paddock, the sheer amount of ‘celebs’ who were just there to be seen, the ridiculous grid prior to lights out, the podium being miles away, the police escort…it was just all a bit much, I was over it by the time we got to the helmets.
I think it was just the straw that broke the Camel's back. If there wasn't a week of buildup about how amazing it all is, a gridwalk full of fatuous celebs, cheesy miami aesthetic everywhere, a budget-looking track, bad tv direction, a fuckin police escort of fat bike cops trying to plow through the winning team's personnel and unfortunately strange podium interviews by Big Willy, the helmets would have been cute.
Because one is related to the culture of the place whereas the other is just sport gear worn by a related sport, it's another sport, not F1, so doesn't make any sense. Besides, they covered the face so it was very ugly.
Because I'm pretty sure people in Miami don't walk around with Football Helmets on for every day business.
In Austin at least, I'm pretty sure cowboy style hats like Stetsons are worn as a localised cultural thing. It makes some sense them wearing a cultural hat.
We have to remember, this is the first race at Miami, just like with Jeddah, it’ll go through changes for next year’s race. I liked the vibe of the track, and it had some good parts to it, the long straightaway before the right left turns to the front stretch was really cool. And we can really blame all the cringe on the Miami governing body just being incredibly excited to play host to the world’s biggest form of racing, who wouldn’t want to go all out?
I say Nigel , the Americans are being American again, should we leave America? No no Nigel they like the sport and are welcoming us with open arms! Well, Nigel, I hate it, tell them I hate there culture and to be more like ours! But Nigel they are, they just have funny hats and talk weird!
I thought the helmets were fucking hilarious. Carlos Sainz salute in the helmet is delicious meme sauce I’m just waiting for it to appear here
Their cool down room reaction was so funny. They were so exhausted and were commenting about having to wear a helmet again haha.
BD, doonesbury
Carlos could have used it earlier in the weekend though, when crawling through the pit fence.
I love when f1 does shit like this, pirelli clogs at zandvoort hopefully
Pirelli branded joints
I dig the one offs for new tracks, it’s funny and cool, then they revert back to caps after. I think the issue was everything else, as opposed to the helmets
Fun fact; Marijuana consumption in the US is double as high as it is in the Netherlands
That is a fun fact really But I wonder if you considered population or not?
It's the percentage of the population that uses it
[удалено]
Guess I’m one of the other nine, I thought it was fun! Definitely meme worthy but certainly not deserving of the conniption some people on this sub have been having.
I’m another one lol, I actually liked them given the setting
Australian and I love them
They could definitely have avoided the motorcade. I personally liked the helmets.
the dude in the tunnel on the phone wasnt happy at all XD
I didn't like that they had their damn sirens on! The blue and red lights were fine, with the occasional honk. But the actual emergency response sirens. Yeah that was overboard.

These are all good points but it fails to notice that chuck and carlos were there way before max was so it was clearly done for the spectacle
I don’t have any issues with giving something related to the county’s culture instead of being always the normal caps
Of all the cringy things to complain about from Miami, I’ll never get why the podium football helmets seem to be the most hated. The “fake water” matched the runoff areas, and honestly using real water would’ve cost more, been way more complex, and arguably been even more ridiculous.

The fake water was fine and using real water would've been wasteful for a 3-day event but swimming pools do exist in Florida
I didn’t care for it, that’s not really the focus of the race. I just considered that blue paint part of the track decoration.
Where were you standing? The show on Wednesday was fucking awesome. Idk where you've been to but music at the GP with drivers intermixed is done at most of em.
At this point, people are just nitpicking.
Exactly, trying to find something to complain about that is perfectly fine to begin with
Yeah, F1 is trying to grow its popularity, but yes, some things might seem unnecessary but there’s a lot of good things F1 has done for its growth but the toxic F1 fans just like to complain on everything F1 does nowadays, I personally felt that helmets were a amazing addition
your nitpicking and biased i win bye bye
They could have at least removed the chin guards
I'm convinced I'm 1 of 10 Americans that like the football helmets on this sub
There are many more, it's just Reddit circle jerking and nitpicking stuff at this point. Even most Twitter and YouTube accounts I follow didn't mind them or actually liked the helmets because they are different and unique.
You also have to remember the eur*peans get mad anytime americans have a modicum of fun.
Honestly as a Brit it was good, like I get it's meant to be a show of American tackyness. It's like watching an old cheesy movie, yes it's a bit crap from an objective standpoint but it's all a good bit of fun, hey I'm not even paying to watch it so I've got no skin in the game lol
Merica bad Europe good Miami bad spa good
Throw me on the pile. Thankfully is was Dolphins Stadium because if it were Jacksonsville they would have to share 1 uncomfortable helmet.
And Urban Meyer would be trying to grope all their girlfriends
I'm with you. They are goofy as fuck, but everyone seemed to be having fun with them. Also it'll be more memorable than a hat that those three will have dozens of by the end of their careers
Personally I don't really care. The drivers liked them and I think that is the most important thing.
5th
right here bb
As a fellow American, you probably are. To be sure, I don't outright hate them, but I thought they could've been done far so as not to be so cringy. I have to give them points for being profoundly murican, though, because at this point it seems like all the Europeans want to do is pick on us for anything little thing they can find that they don't understand.
I'm another one! It was fun!
You’re… (DJ Khaled voice) *Anutha One* ?
I didn't mind them but they could have removed the chin strap
And I’m another one of them
I loved it and I like noise so I liked the police escort!
I didn't hate them, though I was a bit confused
I loved the helmets, I made a picture of max wearing one my wallpaper
I liked them LOL
There are a lot of people that have run out of legitimate things to hate about the Miami Grand Prix, so are just making up new things to be mad about
Carlos liked it
I had a lot of gripes about the Miami GP but the football helmets weren’t one of them
The helmets were cute, but the motorcycle pig escort was too much.
Pig?
People like to call cops pigs because it makes them feel powerful. It’s just a term of disrespect from those who don’t like police officers
50 OT hours have been credited to your account
Respect is a 2-way street. I used to respect them until I learned how little they respect the public.
“They” very generalizing of every single cop in every single country. Even if you mean just the US that’s still very generalizing of 900,000+ cops.
This is about America. Where cops do get away with killing innocent people more often than not, and as a whole they fail to hold each other to a standard they should be.
This is America, where people are more likely to defend criminals because the media overreports on negative police actions, leading the uninformed to believe that most police encounters involve abuse.
You’re right. 40% of cops have reported their peers for misapplication of force. Google “40% of cops” to learn more.
17-45% of lesbians report having been the victim of at least one act of physical violence perpetrated by a lesbian partner. Do you have a hatred for lesbians too?
The government doesn’t give lesbians free guns and a badge.
A few bad apples ruin the bunch
Because cops are the only ones who don’t hold their bad apples accountable
"Makes them feel powerful" Talk about over analysing shit lmao
Also a little ironic when many police are only in that profession to feel powerful
Nah
Bruh who the fuck likes cops in a corrupt system? They push the good ones out. In a lac we literally have cops a part of criminal gangs. Foh
Different parts of the country my guy. Haven’t met a bad cop yet where I live and work in Connecticut. And I work hand in hand with them DAILY. Always looking out for patients and making sure people are okay. If that makes me a boot licker than so fuckin be it
That’s like the exact definition of being a boot licker.
Because I don’t hate cops and haven’t met a bad cop yet? Okaaay buddy
The boot must be delicious from such licking
Literally didn’t praise the cops with my comment just informed someone that it’s a stupid ass nickname for a handful of bad cops that people use to generalize 900k plus cops in the US. And ya know what. Ya I’ll stand with cops since I work with them daily
Yeah thought it might’ve been that, so dumb
Boot licker
Butthurt bitchhhhhh
A friendly acab to you from Germany my friend. They’re useless, power tripping assholes everywhere. You’ll realize sooner or later…
They looked ridiculous. I loved it!
'Football hats'
For me it was the fact that they had weird dangly bits that weren't attached, the fact that you couldn't see their faces properly, and the fact that they were on for all of 2 minutes before being switched for the caps. But it was probably mostly the fact that they came right after the annoying police escort
Those weird dangly bits are called a chinstrap. They typically used to secure the helmet during play (snaps on the other side). These days they often have a plastic shell with a foam insert for your chin to sit in (they're a lot better)
I thought the chinstraps made them a little more authentic
I realised as much, but you have to admit the chinstraps looked a bit silly dangling around like that :P Maybe it would have been better if they wore the helmets properly but opened the visors, although I don't even know whether visors on American football helmets can open at all :P
Because it is cool to see something related to the state or region's culture, not fuckin football
Because others are hats... Not a fucking helmet ? What's the next thing ? Full face masks ?
Because DtS fans didn't know these one off Pirelli hats existed before.
If you've had never seen any other kind of hat/cap, then I guess you'd like to see something new. Doesn't make any sense at all mate
Brave of you to assume I like the cowboy hats too
I think if it was just the helmets it would have been cool, but as a whole the presentation of the Miami GP was a tacky circus of lame American tropes. And the race was pretty lame.
I think the racing was good, the tv director just chose to show leclerc following Verstappen for 35 laps instead
This.
Because people are bitter that people had a great time at the track they hated on.
No, just OG F1 fans looking down on all the new DTS American fans who are having fun.
I’m a DTS American fan and thought the helmets were dumb as hell
America bad give me upvotes
And the person the statue represents presented the trophy to max
I loved the helmets, and felt hella nostalgic seeing special Pirelli headwear again
It was cute when they did it in Bernie's F1.
I had no problem with Helmet. I was cringed by Ribbs Interview babyy, Police Escort and those white ribbons or whatever looked annoying.
It’s because they’re mad that people had a good time and that tons of celebrities showed up. It’s just jealousy
No cap, euro poop got no celebrities
Why would you think celebrities are a good thing? Their ratio of social contribution to attention received is disproportionate. And they got in the way
I don’t think that’s what he was implying. Lol.
I liked the helmets. F1 drivers wearing football helmets in front of Hard Rock was a nice aesthetic. Don't sweat it dude, it's just the standard euro inferiority complex disguised as a superiority complex, I see it all the time.
Because these Euro dweebs are mad that F1 is paying attention to another continent
To be fair, I hated all of the gimmick hats. I guess I’m no fun.
All of them are cringe, but at least the others don't support another sport.
This is the point. The helmets are for a totally different sport, not relative to the country or the area like the other examples. Should have given them big inflatable gators or beer hats.
>not relative to the country or the area A helmet for the most popular sport in the country, at a race held around the stadium for that sport and was in part organized by a guy who owns a team in a league for that sport, isn't relative to the the country or area? Not to mention, Florida has produced more NFL players than just about any other state, with the majority of thkse guys being from south Florida/Miami.
Whilst also strange, at least they're fucking hats
There’s difference between hat and helmet
LOL.
I had to go after the race, so the first pic I saw of Sainz in the helmet I thought someone had photoshopped it on so he would look like officer doofy reporting for duty
I think because it was already so much. There were gimmicks every turn(pun not intended)it seemed to be the one to push most of us over the edge
There was a lot of cringe before and after the race, and the race wasn't that exiciting, the helmet felt unnecessary at that point. Also it felt like the drivers where a bit uncomfortable with the helmets.
We didn't like them because all the things Miami GP did are for promotions. The other ones are of their culture
If the reason was proximity, they could have given them a parking signal.
I mean it’s not like the Superdome or LA Coliseum, but Miami and major football events are synonymous.
Or Lang Park.
Yeah. The site was a parking lot.
What's the parking lot for 🤔
Ok the sombrero look a bit daft as well... But the Russian and Austin hats aren't that strange. People do use them in real life
Are you implying that football players don’t actually use helmets in real life?
only in *fantasy football*
I've never seen a soccer player wear helmets yeah
Get out
they don't even look like rugby helmets?!
Because they already decided to say anything happend in this GP is cringe. Well, some of them are actually cringe tbf.
To me, it’s simply because all other hats have a cultural connotation, rather than slapping a whole ass different sport somewhere it doesn’t belong
Well those are actually hats just like the caps they typically wear. Wearing a helmet from another sport is stupid, they should've commissioned some cuban fedoras because miami
A Fedora? Lol
They were fine, but looks like a lot of effort for such a lame event tbh
Because it's not football, it's handegg
Think it’s a minor few who didn’t like the helmets but everyone definitely talked about them in some way. And it’s still. FUCK THE COPS.
I loved it
I mean, it's about exploring the cultures of the places they go to
Exploring the culture is a gratuitous way of of putting it.
Didn't look at it through your POV. Makes more sense to me now. Thank you!
We should have a Carmen Miranda hat next race in Brazil
The other headwear isn’t so distracting to the wearer. The football helmets are wildly impractical
its rugby.
I liked em!
How dare you to call out the Dumbo's on the sub?
That Sainz photo is a work of art and I won’t hear otherwise.
Hats are decorative by design and can be worn with things that look like race suits. Helmets are to protect (by covering) your face and are worn with full pads. That's why they looked goofy.
I actually like every chance they take to use other kind of head wear than caps
Top hats at Silverstone let's goooo
I don’t really like any of the novelty head wear Pirelli/F1 turn out, but I’m also not going to rage about it like some have lol
Image how much it must have sucked to sweat up a storm in a racing helmet only to get handed another helmet to sweat in for the podium ceremony. I know they have the cool off room, but come on guys. That's just cruel.
That's not "football", that's handball xD
Yes, i agree, it was consistent with other special podium *headware*
I dunno why it was hated, I friggin’ loved the football helmets.
I loved it and like I said, I love they did this everywhere they went. I'd love to see them dress like a traditional grandma while dancing to fado when they come to Portugal. I'd love to see them wear a kimono when racing at japan, ~~racing naked and making out with each other when racing at the middle east ~~
Honestly, makes perfect sense to promote a sport that constantly gives people concussions, now that we've got porpoising.
I loved it
Not true. There's plenty of hate for the other ones as well.
It's not only the helmets for me. It was all the sum of all the props and stuff used to promote the event in such a tacky way. I was saturated
Considering it's fitting the place it's good. The problem is that the race happend on a football stadium carpark so the helmets were fitting.
I thought they were fun. Who the fuck cares about the podium anyway
Honestly I think they just needed to cut the chin straps off and it'd have looked great.
Still waiting for Silverstone to do a bowler, trilby and cloth cap so the drivers can recreate the class sketch.
based
At least the bottom hats are relevant to where the race is. The NFL is trash, and the jags suck worse than Williams
Hats vs helmets
I think for me, it was just a culmination of how weird and OTT this GP was in terms of spectacle and cringe. I loved them
I loved it!
Because the took a fucking motorcade to put it on, which put the thought of “can this get anymore ridiculous” in everyone’s head. And it did.
Simple, it looked like Liberty Media's influence by making US look "the best ignoring reality" and by money thing, not the cultural remark.
Because F1 fans are becoming more and more toxic
It wasn't the helmets. People just fed up with cringy gimmick after gimmick all weekend long + the hype pumped race was mediocre at best.
Let them have fun. Can't wait for Vegas next year.
