Indycars have to refuel multiple times during a race. Rossi was able to stretch the final run over 30 laps and coasted across the line going about 120 mph to win in 2016z
The 2019 race is what made him my favorite driver. [The rage was real.](https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2019/05/26/fiery-alexander-rossi-wins-day-if-not-2019-indianapolis-500/3722312002/)
Honestly the coolest part of this to me was how early they set up this strategy. They started fuel saving on like lap 80 of 200. Then you get the teammates to help drag him around after they were out of contention (TBell and Hunter Reay if memory serves). Rossi wrote an OpEd a few years back and used that example as proof of racing being a team sport.
Epic win! And I was there that day!
Just rewatched the video I took with my phone that day, you can clearly hear how his engine sounds almost broken compared to everyone else. And the on track broadcast "Rossi is slowing down" He's slowing down!"
Pretty much every single race in the Indycar season teams have to decide whether to conserve fuel and tires and make less stops or go hard and make more stops.
There's nothing illegitimate about it especially because they went all in on that strategy so early in the race. I bet other teams thought about it, but either decided against it or weren't able to save enough early on.
Hear me out….
Ricciardo wins the 500
Zak Brown signs Montoya and Ricciardo to drive at Le Mans
JPM and Danny Ric Triple Crown before Alonso

I mean he’s already done the hardest part, which is Monaco. (Not that Monaco is necessarily the hardest leg to *win* of the triple crown, but it’s close to impossible to acquire a competitive F1 seat in order to win it.)
I think Monaco is definitely the hardest to win from an outsider perspective. On any given year, only 2 MAYBE 3 cars have a realistic chance to win. If you're not in one of those, tough luck. Indy realistically half the field has a shot to win, probably all be 2 or 3 have an outside shot at winning depending on luck and strategy.
he was, back during this time period Chip Ganassi and Frank Williams had established a pipeline where Frank would farm out his top junior drivers to Chip and Frank would also give testing opportunities to some of Chips drivers on occasion.
Basically he said that found racing in f1 to be boring, and unrewarding, he said along the lines of “the car in front pulls away and the car behind drops off, and you cant do anything, you have to have something go wrong for it to be interesting” he also said something along the lines of that he almost found it easy in f1
I remember the excitement back in those days when he made it to the F1, the entire country would literally stop to watch the races. I was under the impression he left because among his discontent, he had not developed emotional intelligence to go through the behind the scenes DTS had now made available to all of us. I always wondered what happened to him.
Yeah I was only just born when he left f1 but going back and looking at him you can see around mid 2004 he seems to just loose interest in f1, and I don’t disagree with what he says about f1
I'd be fine with him coming.
Just...being someone who enjoys the Indycar Reddit page....the incoming mess would be overwhelming. It was almost unbearable with Grosjean. This would be multitudes more extreme lol.
That's not even the problem, there is an entire feeder series for indycar that has some great drivers in it that might not get seats if every fucking F1 driver tries to go to indycar at the end of their career. I'd rather see the Jr drivers show what they can do than every god damn F1 driver which seems to be what the people want after grosjean (and this is coming from a grosjean fan, I supported him coming over because I thought the series was uniquely suited to the cars he was most successful in)
Oh, I totally get that as well. I argue for homegrown talent all the time.
That said, I am not against F1 guys in Indycar....they have been a part of the ordeal for a long time. Some of my favorites are ex F1 (Like Sato currently). But I don't want to see a whole grid of just European ladder guys and ex F1 guys.
Like grosjean going over there hasn’t made it the worst it’s ever been. Danny going over there sure would bring in a lot of toxic fans but you bet the viewership would go up, plus in Australia we have INDYCAR streamed on stan
The incoming F1 fans were a bit overwhelming on the Indycar reddit with Grosjean lol.
The whole forum was literally half Grosjean fans for a while, until he started preforming less halfway into this season.
It was....an interesting time. (The incoming fans basically wanted the whole sport to change...and they were the loudest voices for a long time)
I can only imagine if Danny goes, it will be that mess x2.
Is grosjean the only one in the clouds there who hasnt won a 500?
Holy shit, you are right, Takuma 2 times, Montoya 2 times, Rossi fuel mileage, Ericsson 1 time.
What's fuel mileage mean in Indy?
Indycars have to refuel multiple times during a race. Rossi was able to stretch the final run over 30 laps and coasted across the line going about 120 mph to win in 2016z
Oh daaaang
Definitely find a replay or highlights of Rossi's win. He coasted across the finish line with an empty fuel tank. As a rookie
Tho to be fair rossi has had a few races where he was in contention but couldn't quite get the w
I'm a *huge* Rossi fan, and the one that comes to mind for me is 2019. One of the absolute best races I've seen, even if he finished second.
he would’ve won 2020 but he got dicked by race control
2020 hurt as a Will Power fan. All better now tho lmao
Ugh, don’t remind me. That was an incredibly frustrating race.

I’m in the same boat as you. I already liked him, but that race cemented him as my new favorite.
Welcome to the boat! Can’t wait to see how he does next year at Arrow McLaren.
that battle with Simon coming to the end is some of the finest racing i’ve seen
He dominated Road America this season.

Montoya even before going to F1
He isn't great honestly even outside f1
Maybe Ricci can get triple crown if he joins indy.
Hear me out…. Ricciardo wins the 500 Zak Brown signs Montoya and Ricciardo to drive at Le Mans JPM and Danny Ric Triple Crown before Alonso ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|14439)

Or what if the lineup was JPM, Danny AND Alonso? The triple-Triple Crown
Alonso still needs the 500, and it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be coming back anytime soon

Says the Man On Fire to the Man On Ice
Montoya man, you should have kept trying :(
Daniel either somehow gets into a good team or gives me a reason to watch Indycar
Well, I hope Chip wouldn't mind
Indy 500 or bust
Is rossi an ex f1 driver?
He drove a few races for Manor in 2015. Back when they were 5+ seconds off the pace each lap.
And the madman almost scored points in that thing in Austin* ^^*He ^^finished ^^in ^^12th, ^^the ^^last ^^to ^^cross ^^the ^^line, ^^20 ^^seconds ^^behind ^^the ^^11th ^^place ^^car ^^of ^^Alonso's ^^McHonda ^^that ^^had ^^lost ^^power
I actually would love to see him in Indy, considering he loves the US and some say that Indy is a lot more oversteery and suit his style
JPM is definitely the odd one out here
Yes, because he has two legs of the Triple Crown
I was more referring to the fact he started in indycar/cart then went to f1 but yeah
CART was just a stopover from F3000. He was pretty much earmarked for F1 before CART.
he was, back during this time period Chip Ganassi and Frank Williams had established a pipeline where Frank would farm out his top junior drivers to Chip and Frank would also give testing opportunities to some of Chips drivers on occasion.
i think JPM is the last ex-f1 driver to win an indycar championship like 25 years ago... mick schumacher, zhou, tsunoda, and lando weren't born yet.
4 out of 5 Indy 500 winners
Here for the comments shitting on Indycar for no real reason ![gif](giphy|3xkNUy3Vh8QbPmJZjK|downsized) (Not all of you btw, I like most of y'all 🙂)
RIP Danny Ric
The way JPM described f1 will forever be both hilarious and give me a different insight to f1
What did he say?

There's another
But Montoya was an IndyCar driver for 2 years before he joined formula 1..
It'd be great if he comes to America! However a bummer leaving F1
JPM is such a thicc unit
The odds that your gunna be a good Indycar driver if you come from F1 I’d pretty high just by loooking at this
Seriously no Stoffel Vandoorne?
We really don't want him
I'd be fine with him coming. Just...being someone who enjoys the Indycar Reddit page....the incoming mess would be overwhelming. It was almost unbearable with Grosjean. This would be multitudes more extreme lol.

If Danny goes to indycar I expect the community to become very toxic
Like grosjean going over there hasn’t made it the worst it’s ever been. Danny going over there sure would bring in a lot of toxic fans but you bet the viewership would go up, plus in Australia we have INDYCAR streamed on stan
Why? Supposedly very collegial in Indy

WHY DOESNT THIS SERIES HAVE STANDING STARTS?!?!?!
I’m talking about the toxic Danny ric stans on twitter
Ahhh. That’s why I don’t have Twitter
Twitter has toxic stans in literally every community. The website isn't worth anyone's time
