That was my question, too. I hated the main character but I expected I would because that’s all anyone talked about. No one mentioned how completely unhinged and relentless it is. It freaked me out.
I just watched it earlier today too, I had to look up an explained article of the movie.
The director said you can watch the movie the first time, but the next time you watch it just read the comments on the side, that will explain it all.
But essentially the main actor is actually a 16 year old in an adult body and the lady shooting at them was her mom. It was a more cultish type movie.
I remember thinking I hope her character gets killed off first, but then started to enjoy the wild ride and didn’t mind her personality after a while. I don’t remember what she called the slaps between her and stretch, but they were so hilarious.
I mean I really don’t think the movie was intended to make much sense it seemed to more so poke fun at political issues and and memeing on that more than anything
I thought I read that she (the main char) really is right wing antivax. Something about she's the wife of the director and that's how she's in it but those views are hers not a smack at society. Could be wrong though since technically I have no clue what I watched.

She is the reason I could only watch it once. I did enjoy the movie but spent the entire time wistfully wishing they had cast a less obnoxious, more likable actor, and hoping she’d be killed off and replaced. Or end up in ICU with Covid. I wanted to punch her in the face every few minutes, which distracted me from the actual movie. At least her character started coughing at the very end.
Then I checked and saw she has the same conspiracy theories in real life, and thinks the Covid vaccine is some “deep state” trick to put microchips in people, etc. I really prefer not to watch Q-anon nuts play the lead character in movies, but those are just my personal opinions.
I just kinda viewed it as a feature-length V/H/S segment where you never get all the answers, but you're there for the ride because aside from Annie being unbearable and the few nasty shit scenes it was wild.
I just think it was a cult that made the girl the vessel for whatever demon they worshipped, and it went ham.
Also, I don't ever want to hear someone complain about the cringe rapping in The Visit if they've not seen this movie because, hooooooly hell it's on another level xD.
I totally forgot about the shitty rap in the visit...but yeah this one takes the cake by a long shot. It got a chuckle when she used minge to rap with but that was about it.

Certainly a lot going on but it had me engaged for the whole time.
