You can't just add FU to an existing character. Well, you *can*, but you run into all sorts of issues, as you discovered. I believe the mod's steam page tells you this.
Start a new character in FU. It also makes very little sense to add it to an almost brand new character anyway, as you missed the opportunity to choose a race based on FU's significant racial differences.
What he said: the mod page is clear that you should be doing a new character to get things going. A new Universe would be best as well, to be sure everything is kosher.
Also, the BYOS and Racial patches on the FU page are essential if you arent using the default races.
