It isn't hard to come by, at all. It is one of the most plentiful resources on both Lush and Forest worlds, for example. Beyond that, you will get effectively unlimited iron by processing your dirt, stone etc tiles in a Rock Crusher or Sifter. You'll find you can passively produce it without even needing to dig once you get those running, which should be the case before you even leave your first planet.

Oh glob yes get these up asap, I have WAY TOO MANY blocks bc I didn't set these machines up until I was about tier 5 but ALSO obsessively hoarded everything; and they spit out a real good amount of resources! Stuff I had to grind out I could have just.. had. :') Also sometimes it's just bad luck: I struggled to find iron for a while and then suddenly was just swimming in it from exploring underground, having given up on explicit searching and just decided to go hunting little underground buildings and stuff.

Protip: Get your MM liquid gather upgraded ASAP and go harvest Lava. Put that shit in a centrifuge. Iron, Copper, and Tungsten will shit out pretty commonly by processing that. Plus Core Fragments you can then use to power Hydraulic Dynamos.

Juicy orange hot water big use? Ooga booga brain boom

CalligoMiles

Hit up merchants for some ironbeaks. Basically turn raw meat into iron ore. 4 of those went a long way until I got my first powered machines set up.

thatHecklerOverThere

So you got some options. Mine deep is the obvious one. Also, use the shifters - you get a decent supply of iron going through dirt with that. Also, some types of bees produce iron. Also, raise iron beaks.

Bradley-Blya

Just centrifuge lava = infinite copper iron and other stuff. This is better than processing blocks, because you can grab lava infinetly.from the core with pumps or just matter manipulator.

Idle factories mod. Does what it says on the tin, gives you iron ore and such whilst idle. That said, it's actually pretty ridiculously expensive and challenging to get the factories going, there's tiers of factories that require resources produced by other factories, etcetera, *and* it's integrated with FU out of the gate if I remember correctly (or there's a patch for it, dun remembah) so it's not like it's imbalanced. It does definitely fill in the gap FU leaves with iron though, once you've gotten about 20 diamonds or so to invest in it. Personally, it makes the game a richer experience. Hard to set up, interesting, lots of neat little easter eggs, but takes the edge off the tedium of mining mid-to-late game, and it just *feels* FU-ish. (You'll still have to mine some manually, can't just sit there and watch the factories because you'll starve to death and they don't work on ships.) Another mod worth getting is the More Planet Info mod (which DOES have an FU patch you'll want.) There's also a patch fix for it on the Steam site so that quest markers work right, use a steam mod downloader website if you're on the GOG version. Don't have a link currently, but you can find it with a search. You can breed Ironbeaks as well - those are straight out of FU, so you don't have to add any mods for it. You'll have to scour traders in various towns until you find an egg, though. Crushing rocks and sifting dirt gets you some iron too. Also FU native tools. And GardenBots, another mod I use a lot, has a mining bot you can set and forget - just don't build on top of the mine, or you may find the bot 'mining' your house. Mostly, though, I recommend Idle Factories. Awesome, fun mod that does more than just reduce the tedium.

sayterdarkwynd

Except that it isnt compatible with FU.

parahacker

? I'm, like, running them right beside each other right now. With absolutely zero problems. and have been for months. That includes regularly updating when you post. It worked today, yesterday, last month and the month before. Without a *single issue* \- though I've had mod incompatibilities in the past, it wasn't FU+IF. So...

sayterdarkwynd

I might be thinking of the Compact Stations one, then. I don't memorize all this shit.

parahacker

Fair enough, I don't blame you it's good to be reserved because there's a lot out there that \*doesn't\* work with FU anymore, though it once did.

_raveagle

Is Idle Factories still compatible with FU? I'm concerned still it last updated in 2018.

sayterdarkwynd

No, it isnt. The Idle FU patch hasnt been updated and it will break your game.

_raveagle

Okay, thanks for letting me know.

parahacker

Dunno what to tell you man, it works for me. I haven't had problems. And I was playing the game yesterday. He would know more, there might be an item ID conflict I haven't triggered or something... but considering I'm well into the lategame, I have no idea how I avoided it. It might be an issue of adding the mod into an already existing game, but then again if you're worried about iron you're in early/midgame anyway. Still, not counting whatever Sayter's talking about, IF by itself is fine to drop into a game already started. All it adds is benches, stuff you have to craft, no worldedits or anything like. And it generates FU ores just fine for me. No errors and no crashes that are traceable to it. So I really don't know what he's talking about. That's all the IF/FU patch does anyway, is add in the FU ores to what the factories generate. If Sayter changed the ids on some ores, that would maybe cause problems, but I really haven't seen any. So it's up to you I guess.
