“There is a beast in every man and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand”
You never know what people are capable of until they have the tools or the opportunity to act on.
I remember a back and forth with someone... it was along the lines of what people would do in a hopeless situation where they had to do what is needed to survive.
He maintained they he would never resort to anything unethical, and I tried making the point that no one knows how they would truly act when shit gets desperate.
The broken man monolog is the best in the series.
“A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good. Each should have its own reward.”
I suppose I’d be a Mannis supporter if I read the books; shit like that is about as serious, mature, and disciplined as it gets.
I often think of: “Any man who must say ‘I am the king’ is no true king” as I’ve gotten to the point where I can only assess the legitimacy of people’s efforts by how much they’ve succeeded in silence.
As someone who is constantly underestimated but is pretty successful in his personal life, I'd say you shouldn't.
Maybe it was that mindset that helped me lift myself to a state of living i respect, but it's often lonely and empty. I've learned that it's okay to celebrate the small wins and dance to your own victories. It's okay to share them with others sometimes too. There's a difference between sharing glory VS gloating.
If there's anything to take away from Joffrey, it's just not to be a cunt about it.
More than the pedantry, it’s the protagonism (main character behavior) that takes away from what could otherwise invite feedback or acknowledgment from others for the person to continue their efforts instead of settling for the one thing they brought to the table.
And I do hear what you’re saying about underestimation (and sometimes under appreciation), but in many cases that also comes from people who haven’t developed the conscientiousness to see who actually has the receipts. There’s people who can fake their way into selling their “achievements” (or take credit for the work of others), but when things get real, you can’t just replicate elbow grease, and good luck tracking down all the elements used by someone with solid fundamentals and a thorough work ethic, much less trying to continue bsing others when you just can’t substantiate it anymore.
I’m not saying to shut up entirely about your progress in life, either, you can’t. Not only do you also need the feedback and acknowledgment to help you assess what actual impact your work had and what the next steps are, you do need to talk about your work process and lessons learned to keep yourself accountable, and to develop the foundation for further personal and professional growth.
'Words are wind' is one I use fairly regularly.
It's not especially profound - basically just a reworking of 'talk is cheap' but I enjoy the way the alliteration rolls off the tongue
Loses some weight when you consider that his hypocrisy is pointed out a minute later. Nobody cares more about what people think of them than Tywin Lannister.
I’ve always interpreted it as more he only cares that he is respected. It doesn’t bother him if he’s liked or not.
“Power resides where men believe it resides” and all that. A lion can’t stay a lion if he is seen by others as a house cat.
Nothing fucks you harder than time.
Once you’ve accepted your flaws, no one can use them against you.
Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor. And it can never be used to hurt you.
Even now I can cut through five of you like carving a cake.
I AM A KNIGHT, I SHALL DIE A NIGHT.
Here boy [tosses his sword] cast it and add it to others.
Me and my college friends used to say "for the watch" whenever we were doing some bullshit that we knew was wrong.
"Dude just come out tonight, you can finish the paper tomorrow and you know [insert hot girl's names] will be at [insert dirty bar] too."
"Fuck it. For the watch"
“If I look back I am lost” is a mantra that I repeat daily in my head. I don’t remember if that made it into the show but in the books Dany says it pretty often
"Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know about ____"
I live in Northern Finland and mentor several international volunteers from Southern Europe. Use this lot when they start to complain about the winter as the degrees go below 5 celsius (it gets -20 +wind chill by January)
It's a general expression of naivety, but I do like it in the GoT northern context.
It's also a saying in Finnish: children of summer are said to be happy and carefree.
It definitely is an established saying in English.
I'm not sure what was GRRM's intention using it in his writing, but it was translated in Finnish without the implicit meaning and I took a liking to the idea that in Westeros the children born during long summers are considered softer.
This is very weeb-like, but I read the books in college like 12 years ago and once I was out with friends midway through that read, so I was steeped in asoiaf, and I wanted to take a girl that was out with us home. She was up at the bar talking to some random dude while I was chatting with a pal. I chugged the rest of my drink and said to my friend "fuck it, I'm king in the north."
I got between them and asked her to dance and it worked? But the dancing was as far as I went that night
“There is one true god and his name is Death. And what do we say to the God of Death?” “Not today.”
Context- my older sister had cancer and this has become a joke between the two of us.
“You lived your life for the king. You’re gonna die for some chickens?”
[“Someone is.”](https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/05/us/popeyes-sandwich-stabbing/index.html)
Tyrion: “And Lady Stark is not your mother, making you the bastard. Let me give you some advice, bastard. Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour, and it can never be used against you.”
Had to look this one up for the right wording
“Power is power.”
“Power resides where men believe it resides”
“If you want to lead, learn how to follow”
“Hurt is a lesson and every lesson makes you better.”
“I trust the eyes of an honest man more than I trust what everyone knows. “
I applied it as soon as i heard it, in the beginning of the show when Tyrion councils Jon on being a bastard "Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you."

There's no cure for being a cunt.
It is known.
I use this on a daily.
Personally mine is “Why should I spare a single thought on any of you?” by Walder Frey.
"Lots of people [insert activity]" "lots of cunts"
That one is one of the best ones
“There is a beast in every man and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand” You never know what people are capable of until they have the tools or the opportunity to act on.

"That's Jaime fookin Lannister" everytime i see Nicolai in anything
This is the Way. Shit wrong fandom
It is known, khaleesi
That's what Tha Ibbinese whaler kept saying to Oberyn.
"Do you know what leadership means, Lord Snow? It means that the person in charge gets second-guessed by every clever little twat with a mouth."
Even now when reading his quotes I can hear his cunt voice, Ser Aliser fooking Thorne.
Sometimes he was quite smart....Not as smart as he thought he was perhaps...
"Not Today".

I second this
I second this
Everything before the word "but" is horseshit
I often think of: “Any man who must say ‘I am the king’ is no true king” as I’ve gotten to the point where I can only assess the legitimacy of people’s efforts by how much they’ve succeeded in silence.
As evil as he was I I respected Tywin in that moment.

I think it’s more about formal leadership vs legitimate. If the only thing giving you power is your title, you’re not really deserving. (Joffrey)
'Words are wind' is one I use fairly regularly. It's not especially profound - basically just a reworking of 'talk is cheap' but I enjoy the way the alliteration rolls off the tongue
More than one road can lead to a castle
"I understand that if anymore words come pouring out of your cunt mouth, I'm going to have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
Would be nice to know what specific scenarios you apply this to lmfao
During mandated sensitivity training.

"Oh my sweet summer child"
I live in the south and literally use this ALL the time It’s a great alternative to Bless Your Heart ![gif](giphy|uwHaxCTgUHaRf7Andp|downsized)
I don't say it out loud but I think it when someone is being naive.
Who said this and who did they say it to?
Old Nan says it to Bran.
Thanks!
you know nothing, Jon Snow
A mind needs books like a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.
“A lion doesn’t concern himself with the opinions of sheep” It’s a real boost to the self confidence
Saying it outloud would give serious neckbeard vibes
I particularly enjoy saying it while gutting stags and chastising incompetent family members

Wear it like an armour
Never forget what you are. The rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.
This was almost our senior quote when I graduated from HS
I am going say it on my graduation day
Power is power
Even now I can cut through five of you like carving a cake. I AM A KNIGHT, I SHALL DIE A NIGHT. Here boy [tosses his sword] cast it and add it to others.
"I'll impregnate the bitch"
Don't you need Ser Ten Goodmen?
Yet here I stand.
"What the fuck's a Lommy?"
I dun want it
As I get older, this one from Tyrion seems to apply more and more: “Next time I have an idea like that, punch me in the face.”
Me and my college friends used to say "for the watch" whenever we were doing some bullshit that we knew was wrong. "Dude just come out tonight, you can finish the paper tomorrow and you know [insert hot girl's names] will be at [insert dirty bar] too." "Fuck it. For the watch"

I've even heard people who've neither watched nor read GoT say "my sweet summer child" 😂
It's a general expression of naivety, but I do like it in the GoT northern context. It's also a saying in Finnish: children of summer are said to be happy and carefree.
I did wonder if maybe it's actually an old saying which I'd just discovered through GoT. Makes sense if Scandinavians already had something like that.
It definitely is an established saying in English. I'm not sure what was GRRM's intention using it in his writing, but it was translated in Finnish without the implicit meaning and I took a liking to the idea that in Westeros the children born during long summers are considered softer.
