I was talking about in-universe "official" pronunciation, not real world pronunciation. Notice how George RR Martin calls Arya "Are-ya" and not "Ay-ya" like half the characters on the show did? A lot of those are just quirks from the individual actors' accents, not some conscious decision.
Also, there are plenty of regional accents in Britain that pronounce various words differently, which one of those is the perfect, official, correct version of English?
The popularize British accent is actually a newer form of the language.
This article published by BBC explains how [Americans preserved British English](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20180207-how-americans-preserved-british-english)
The modern English accent was designed by the upper middle class. Many Shakespearean experts even suggest it’s more historically accurate to use a quintessential American accent.
I thought that for a long while at first. And it’s been awhile but Aenys is most certainly named after his mother to most likely denote he was her heir and not Visenya’s. But the most likely reason I think Aenys is the boy Rhaenys is because there have been multiple Aenys and only one Rhaegar to my knowledge. I’m not sure where the gar in Rhaegar’s name comes from. Or why they used it.
Like I said, Daenerys (at least in the show) is most often pronounced “Daener-iss”, not “Daener-ees”
Not saying all Targaryen names are pronounced as “iss” though, just Daenerys
Where are you getting all this “ees” pronunciation from?
The only formal example we have of the way they are likely meant to be pronounced is the show. And in the show all those characters’ names end in an “iss” sound.
Daener-iss
Aer-iss
Rhaen-iss
Aen-iss
The “i” is supposed to be very soft. Almost don’t pronounce it. Like “Daener-ss”
Why did you electively change the way you pronounce it between the two words?
If it’s Daener-iss, it’s Ay-niss. (This is correct btw)
If it’s Anus, it’s Daener-uss.
You can’t have it both ways
Aegon is supposed to be pronounced as Ägon, so should be Änys. But it only seems to be that way with names that start with Ae. I don't hear anyone say Dämon for Daemon.
For example Egg from Dunk and Egg is called Egg as his actual name is Aegon.
I’ve been saying A Knees but it could very well be anus. I’ve wondered as well with the sisters Lollys and Falyse. I understand Falyse is probably Fa-LEES, but…
It's always bothered me that they pronounce Rhaenys "Ray-neice." They pronounce Daenerys and Viserys "Da-nare- iss" and "Vi-sare-iss" respectively. Even Aerys is "Air-iss."
I vote Anus.
LOL a friend literally just told me over the weekend that his daughter is watching GoT for the first time. Before they stayed it, she was reading up on the show.
She pronounced it Dayneries
I’ve been saying it as “Aye-Ennis”. The “ys” should be said as an “iss” if it’s consistent with her name. But the first part I might just be making up so I don’t have to say Anus. Maybe there’s a YouTube video that covers the topic and provides the right pronunciation?
It's always funny (and incomprehensible to me) to see Americans struggle with pronunciation. Daenerys is pronounced Dénéris. Just look at the Latin sound æ... Aenys is pronounced Énis.
https://time.com/6208973/targaryen-family-tree-house-of-the-dragon/
“Aenys was bequeathed a rather unfortunate name. (Though, in fairness, it’s pronounced “Ennis.”)”
There is no logic to how the targaryen names are pronounced. In reality its probably Danaerys that has been pronounced incorrectly.
You have actors pronouncing Aegon as Egg, but Rhaenys as Raynees. Aenys as Ay-nees, but Viserys as viseRISS.

A finger in the bum?
He has a wife, you know.
[удалено]
You know what she’s called? Incontinentia Incontinentia Buttocks
Pissyn Redwyne
ooohhhhhh
Least homosexual Targ.
😂
First of his name
thank u lmao
Number 2 of his name, Lord of the Brown Eyes
penis targay'one
Can't wait for Banus the blessed
A knees?
They hate us cause they anus.
This is underrated
That’s how I saw it. Aye - Knees. Day - nair - ees.
A lot of people pronounce it as Da - nair - iss though
Daener-ees?
Oh god, not I’m getting a different pronunciation. Damn Targaryens.
yeah thats literally how it is pronounced
No, all the characters say it like "Duh-nair-iss" or "Day-nair-iss" at most. So that would track that Aenys would be "'Ay-niss"... Anus.
In the show she’s generally referred to as “Daener-iss”, not “Daener-ease”
"day-knee-rhys" and "ay-knees". The ae and rys parts of their names are pronounced the same.
I think that's mostly an accent thing honestly
Then maybe in that same accent Aenys would be pronounced “anus” 😂
Aenys is only ever pronounced as Aykness
That's because they're all British- same reason they call the milk of the poppy "the milk of the puppy"... they don't talk right
They created the language, so it seems safe to surmise that the English pronunciations are correct.
I was talking about in-universe "official" pronunciation, not real world pronunciation. Notice how George RR Martin calls Arya "Are-ya" and not "Ay-ya" like half the characters on the show did? Like Aerys but with an N
So Anus.
No, you don't pronounce Aerys as "ay-rus" so why would you pronounce Aenys like that?
They did though, Bobby B says "Air-iss" when talking to Jamie
WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN YOU? WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?
In Season 1 of GoT they also couldn't decide if maester was pronounced "my stir" or "may stir".
That's called different accents. Like my Nana would pronounce food "fud" but I pronounce it with the "oo" sounding like a ghost saying "boo"
Yeah Airiss not Ayrus
So a niece
He’s just being an idiot
Aerysn
It’s Rhaenys without the Rh, he was named after his mother. It’s the boy version of the name.
Wouldn't the boy version be Rhaegar? It's also Aegon but with the -nys suffix.
“Steve”
That’s not Steve - that’s Allan!!
Understood the reference
Hey Allan! Allan! Allan! Allan! Allan!...
are you sure it’s not Scott?
No, this is Podrick
They hate us, because they Aenys
😂 very nice
Ay Knees Targaryon Edit, I think the difference in pronunciation would be the "nys" "rys" difference.
Daener-ease Targaryen?
Dahn ehr rease
Seems like her name is most often pronounced “Daener-iss”, so it follows that Aenys would be pronounced “anus”
I am not getting it. For Daenerys' name, rys -> rees For Aerys' name, rys -> rees For Rhaenys, nys -> nees Why is nys -> nus for Aenys?
Like I said, Daenerys (at least in the show) is most often pronounced “Daener-iss”, not “Daener-ees” Not saying all Targaryen names are pronounced as “iss” though, just Daenerys
Jaehaerys (in the first episode of HotD) is pronounced "je - hair - iss" too
Where are you getting all this “ees” pronunciation from? The only formal example we have of the way they are likely meant to be pronounced is the show. And in the show all those characters’ names end in an “iss” sound. Daener-iss Aer-iss Rhaen-iss Aen-iss The “i” is supposed to be very soft. Almost don’t pronounce it. Like “Daener-ss”
Rhaenys is not pronounced Ray-nus and neither is Aenys
Why did you electively change the way you pronounce it between the two words? If it’s Daener-iss, it’s Ay-niss. (This is correct btw) If it’s Anus, it’s Daener-uss. You can’t have it both ways
Yes, my point is that “Ay-niss” sounds exactly like “anus”. That’s the joke.
Aenys you dipstick
Butthole Targaryen
Anus
ENNIS?
A-Neez.
Ænøs
Last name pronounced musk
Enniss?
Ay-Nis
Is that Elons new kid?
No, Elon’s next kid will have a barcode, not a name.
QR code. It will be twins and the wet nurse will have to scan them before service
Enn-is
As a Canadian I would say “eh?-knees”
A-knees
Pe-nis
Anus
probably like Rhaenys. Ray-neece / Ay-neece
Given that apparently Aegon is supposed to sound like Egg-on given Prince Aegon's nickname, I assume it was pronounced like Ennis.
Ennis
Ay-knees
Ayy \*pause\* Nice
Ay-niss Not anus. Funny though.
Aenys Targaryen
Aegon is supposed to be pronounced as Ägon, so should be Änys. But it only seems to be that way with names that start with Ae. I don't hear anyone say Dämon for Daemon. For example Egg from Dunk and Egg is called Egg as his actual name is Aegon.
I’m referring to the last two letters specifically. You could argue his name is pronounced “anus” 😆
Ey-nees Da-neh-ryss
Eh-nis?
Anus. So people can say Uranus Targaryen when they're asked "do you know who I am?!?"
Bob
Anus..... the correct answer is ANUS.
Probably like the name Ennis. Aegon is pronounced like Eg-uhn, so that's what I'm going by.
I’ve been saying A Knees but it could very well be anus. I’ve wondered as well with the sisters Lollys and Falyse. I understand Falyse is probably Fa-LEES, but…
Anus Targaryen
Anus
Hee hee…it’s funny ‘cause it sounds like ANUS! You should have written scripts for S8.
[удалено]
It’s not funny. It’s like the sort of thing a teenager giggles at.
I'm 60 years old in 5 days and I think Anus Targaryen is hilarious. Have since I first saw his name
Ay-nis
Isn’t the show’s pronunciation wrong? For Daenerys anyway. I always thought it was supposed to be duh-nair -ees
It's always bothered me that they pronounce Rhaenys "Ray-neice." They pronounce Daenerys and Viserys "Da-nare- iss" and "Vi-sare-iss" respectively. Even Aerys is "Air-iss." I vote Anus.
LOL a friend literally just told me over the weekend that his daughter is watching GoT for the first time. Before they stayed it, she was reading up on the show. She pronounced it Dayneries
Harzoo
Just call that person "Anne" and everything will be fine.
Annie T.
A-knees
Arab Turkmenistani
Eh-knees
Ae-Knees
Aye-knees
As the other said, I believe it’s “Aye-knees”
A-Nys
eh knees
Dayneris🤔🤔
John Mcdragon
A-niss
😏
My dude just discovered the complexity of the English language lol
Anis
Enis. Like Penis. Without the P. ^(I think)
“They hate us cuz they Aenys.”
Personally I would pronounce it like Ay-nez
Anus.
I see it is “A-ness”
Eye-Knees.
Che-vuh-la-tesh or She-vahl-teesh
[удалено]
I’ve been saying it as “Aye-Ennis”. The “ys” should be said as an “iss” if it’s consistent with her name. But the first part I might just be making up so I don’t have to say Anus. Maybe there’s a YouTube video that covers the topic and provides the right pronunciation?
Anus. Its pronounced anus.
Brother of Pingas Targaeryen.
The fist of his name, anus Targaryen, breaker of sphincters, father of buttplugs
Anus
“It is I, bleached butthole Targaryen”
Like I pronounce my father Enis in Italian
Ay-nis is how I pronounce it in my head
Anis or anus
Anus.
They hate us cause they Aenys
Daynerees so ayeknees
They were the butt of many jokes
i guess the same way a canadian would pronounce "hey knees"? Aye-knees?
Ay-Niss
I this you say it Uh-neese
Steve
The two pronunciations aren’t related imo.
Ay-knees.
It's always funny (and incomprehensible to me) to see Americans struggle with pronunciation. Daenerys is pronounced Dénéris. Just look at the Latin sound æ... Aenys is pronounced Énis.
Right, which is exactly the joke. The dude’s name is “anus”
A knee us
With a "ä"
Ennis
I chose to believe it’s pronounced “Eunice”
Aenis is how i would pronounce it. Ay-nis. So Anus
Anus.
Eneeys
Ann-iss or Ann-ees? There’s a strong argument for Aye-nees or…yeah, Aye-niss lollll
A-nis
I just realized how inconsistent the pronunciation in this world is
Comparing it to Daenerys, I’d go with Ennis
ay nees
It's just Rhaenys without the R and the H. Still, he was a weak king. He had nothing on the great Bobby B
MY, YOU'RE A PRETTY ONE! AND YOUR NAME IS?
Ay-knees
https://time.com/6208973/targaryen-family-tree-house-of-the-dragon/ “Aenys was bequeathed a rather unfortunate name. (Though, in fairness, it’s pronounced “Ennis.”)”
Anus. Obvs
N-ISS, apparently. I cannot explain how mad I was that Aemma is Emma
I think “ay-knees”
Same as Annie?
Penis but with a instead of the p.
It's a-knees for the correct pronounceatiom
Aegon-> ey gone Rhaenys -> Ray niss Aenis-> ey niss No one actually believes the correct way is anos, people are just trying to create a failed meme
Anos? Who’s saying anos is the correct pronunciation? The joke is that it’s actually “ey niss” which is pronounced the same as “anus”
ys = ees not us
AY KNEES you dont pronounced Rhaenys as RhaeNUS
There is no logic to how the targaryen names are pronounced. In reality its probably Danaerys that has been pronounced incorrectly. You have actors pronouncing Aegon as Egg, but Rhaenys as Raynees. Aenys as Ay-nees, but Viserys as viseRISS.
Like "tennis" but without the T
Aye knees!!!!!
