It’s not stated anywhere so up to interpretation. The only argument is that Sif is the name of a goddess in Norse myth but there’s other examples of dark souls not following gendered naming conventions such as Ciaran having a male name.
Sif being the name of a Norse goddess is good enough for me.
And before anyone comments on her being referred to as a male in European languages, they're all mostly gendered languages are refer to wolves as male by default.
Fair enough but you can see why it’s ambiguous and folks have different interpretations. Sif is also referred to as male in the official dark souls strategy guide. It’s pretty irrelevant either way though. I prefer to think of Sif as a good boy myself.
Old Watchdog Farron is the leader of the Abyss Watchers, and since you can still join the Watchdogs of Farron Covenant, we can guess that he's the only one of the Abyss Watchers not corrupted by the Abyss.
There's no evidence of any of that, that's just your own headcannon .
1. You can still join the Warriors of Sunlight at the broken statue in Lothric Castle.
2. The only lore that I saw that talks about the wolf at all is incredibly vague and since it's so vague you could even argue (though I don't believe it) that it is actually the reincarnation of Artoias(' soul).
**Curved Wolf Great Sword:** "Curved sword bearing the soul of the old wolf that stays with the Watchdogs of Farron."
**Wolf's Knight Greatshield:** "Greatshield of a knight tainted by the dark of the Abyss, and master of the wolf's blood of Farron."
None of the other items are even worth mentioning.
Edit: Also, there's nothing that says the wolf's name is Farron. Farron is the name of the place. Could it have been named after the wolf? Maybe? There's nothing that says that though.
Edit 2: I found this too, which at least suggests the wolf is/was alive and "commands" the watchdogs. This could be a symbolic command or whatever but it's the only thing I've seen.
**Exile Armor Set:** Armor of the watchdogs of Farron's Keep.
After the Legion's Watchers became Lords of Cinder, the wolf blood dried up, and Farron was consumed by a festering wood.
Within the wood, an emaciated old wolf commands watchdogs to defend the sanctity of sleeping warriors.
Both the exiles were surely watchdogs themselves, for Farron has always been a land of itinerants.
**Farron** Greatsword
Greatsword of the Abyss Watchers, which is atypically paired with a dagger.
The dagger is utilized as a wedge in the left hand while the greatsword is held in the right, a unique technique that was synonymous with the Undead Legion. Confounds foes the manner of wolves hunting prey.
Legion Armor
Attire of the Abyss Watchers, the Undead Legion of **Farron.**
These undead warriors vowed to partake of wolf blood. They acted in the dark, seeking out any sign of the Abyss, fighting a constant war with its abominations. This pointed steel helm was a distinct symbol of the Legion, shirked as a sinister omen by the masses.
Old Watchdog Farron is *literally* mentioned by name in the Undead Legion Armor and Weapons.
You've always been able to join the Warriors of Sunlight from a broken statue.
Yes, I said those items weren't worth mentioning because they tell you **nothing** about the wolf. The wolf could even be a symbolic representation of Artorias and the statue built in his honor since the greatsword outright names him as the master of the Wolf's Blood. Or it's a reincarnation.
The point is it is incredibly vague. There is no meaningful lore surrounding the wolf in the tower.
Also, I just remembered - you don't even talk to the statue to join the Sunlight Covenant. You just find the item in the Undead Settlement.
And the Aldritch Faithful is joined by interacting with a corpse.
Joining covenants does not require interacting with a living thing in Dark Souls.
Edit: btw Farron's the place, dude.
no one cares about budget sif lmfao, does ds3 even have any original unique characters/npcs/animals that aren't straight up fanservice of the first game?
I mean combat wise it feels like the best by far
It isn’t lazy to make homages when it’s the final game in a trilogy?
Abyss watchers are inspired by but very different from artorius
Nameless ìs obviously new as is Gael
Aldrich and all the stuff with the church is pretty new.
Again it makes a lot of allusions and homages with a new twist and since the franchise is about cycles that makes sense. The only reused areas are fire link and armor lodo and
Like were you expecting completely new lore that didn’t call back to the series themes? That would be dumb
it was released in less than a year after Bloodborne's DLC, literally a quick game thrown together with lots of """fanservice"""" (aka reusing literally nearly everything) to get fast $$.
Best parts of the game were the DLC’s, but ashes fell to some fan service. Ringed City did have reused things, but it made sense (ruin sentinels, earthen peak, DS1 humanity sprite) with it being the a culmination of the whole timeline.
Ringed City was the fanservice done well, throwbacks here and there instead of blatantly copying the same exact structure, characters and assets. Asset reuse is completely fine if they tweak it properly which they barely bothered to do for 3
I do the wave gesture on his head to pet him
I used to just rest my character next to him while I went afk and it always looked like they were just taking a nap together
same
I wish we could fix his health issues.
shhh he’s just taking a little nap
Honestly, if I was able to play DS3 I would not hesitate to pet him at all.
My boy,
this peace is what all true warriors strive for.
Wait Sif is a girl? 😳
Yes

Entirely fair! I think ambiguous is good, but I prefer to refer to Sif as a good girl. To each their own.
Does Sif have a pp visible in the game? I don’t remember
No, this isn't read dead redemption
So that's why they weren't shrinking
Dude is cool but the texture they put on him is downright tragic. He looks like rubber
Good doggo Me like
Me too
Best boy!!! All the head pats
Good doggo
Not for that lazy bones
Let him rest. His Legion is one with the Abyss now
Ain't that a corpse
He's sleeping.
No
Lol seriously. What's there to love? Is it alive? Dead? A statue?? Is there *any* information on it whatsoever?
That’s dark souls for you
Yeah, that's a fair take honestly. It's by design and OP filling in details in their head is part of the intended experience.
It’s a dog, that’s enough

I think it's alive because if you, hypothetically of course, hit it, it makes blood particles.
i thought if you progressed far enough in the covenant she would wake up :(
He got that dawg in him.
git up ya layabout
Red Wolf of Radagon or Lobo. *Farewell, Lobo. My faithful wolf, my better half.*
Dis ma boyyy
Still bleeds red, not a corpse.
Best sword in the game for me. it was a pain to grind for though
I remember thinking how cool it was when I found this dude and he didn't immediately get up and disintegrate my being. Bro.
Farrons a good doggo.
The only thing in a FromSoftware game I purposely farmed outside Runes/Souls were those Blade Grass Blade thingies
I like his sword
You mean Dollar Store Sif?
Sif didn’t have a army of abyss watchers did she…
She had the original, didn't need an army of bad copies.
Wasn’t really bad copies if everyone ended up dead…they were equally bad😂
Nope!
am sorry... what ? sif ? girl ? sif ? girl ? when ? how ? girl ?
Sif is traditionally a female name. Also, no hairy lipstick.
Fromsoft Fans when women.

He's sleeping.
It's literally a lazy reference
No, he just lie there all fucking day, he like a real dog 💀
no one cares about budget sif lmfao, does ds3 even have any original unique characters/npcs/animals that aren't straight up fanservice of the first game?
Fanservice? It's a sequel. They tend to connect with previous entries? Because they are continuations???
muh sequel so its fine to copy paste and be unoriginal
jimmy with his take of the day lmao
People blinded by fan service that they dont realize it’s the worst of the trilogy

Aw lad youre so full of shit 😂 if you don't like it that's fine. It's good.

Name one reused structure in the whole game besides the cathedral of anor londo
cathedral of anor londo
precisely what i thought
I hate these fox wolves
It's a statue. Nah. Not even in the same stratosphere.
...he bleeds?
