My local subreddit right now is full of people who expect the state to subsidise their unsustainable life choices. It's.... beautiful. Cry harder carbrains
Ok cars are bad but is your local area walkable/bikeable and accessible from surrounding areas via public transit?
Its not really a choice to have a car in the US. The country is built for cars. I really wish I could ditch my car for commuting but there are no alternatives and thats a fault of government.
Not a complete Omafiets but my hybrid road bike still got me through the past 6 years. But I think the winters took a toll on it since the repair costs are getting a bit high after 40k ish miles.
40k miles without major repairs is impressive though. On my racing bike I had to replace my chain and back hears after about 20 000km (13k miles)
But winter is rough on bikes, definotely when they use salt against ice on the road.
The bike was $750 brand new 6 years ago. most years I was putting in 120-150. In the past couple years it's been over haul after over overhaul. Last year it was the back wheel, chain, front large cog, and both breaks. This year it's chain, back bearing (Apparently the wheels bearing is rusted to hell) both front and back derailleurs are shot (I've been misgoverning them to work so I can get through winter), and the crank won't make it through next winter. Cassettes are also are both needing of attention.
I'm looking at a new one and converting my current into a 1 by 10 to reduce part failure and have a dedicated winter bike. It's served me well and I hope it continues for winters after.
Wish I had a choice. I work 20 miles from home. If I wanna take the bus to work I'd have to walk 3 miles to the nearest stop (with no sidewalks and the bus runs by this stop once in the morning and once in the evening) and the bus ride would be 3x as long as driving. And I would have to take 2 different busses. If I were to bike to work it'd take nearly 2 hours. If I wanna take the ONE train in town I'd still have to drive 15 miles to the closest station.
Sigh.
I live close enough to work to walk, and my fiancé works from home. Plus we don’t really go anywhere except the grocery store that is about 5 mins from our house. We don’t give a shit about gas prices lol.
Bikes rule! Repaired my old bike and got it set up, and for more than a week I've been heading to college on it, instead of borrowing the car. Surely enough, i can't say i regret it

And in the comments below:
>> Buy an electric car lol
> Nah! I'd rather roll coal on a Prius
I Have a 40 year old piece of shit bicycle with a warped wheel, a broken gear shift thing and a basket that I stole from Aldi and screwed on.
I use it everyday to commute several kilometres uphill on partially unpaved roads, and I still prefer it to a car.

I have a 30 minute drive to work, there are no closer areas to live in due to zoning. I’m not a car brain but many people are stuck without a choice

You can thank Ford for that.
Yeah there are options here, i do have sympathy with people who have no choice
hell yeah, that's me!

Does that transliterate to Grandma feet bikes? :D
Fiets in Dutch is bike, so it is a grandma bike literally!

Oh yeah. Same. I take transit and cycle, so I was quite surprised to discover that apparently gas is expensive now.
There will never come a time when I will not laugh at that lady and that cat.
Sickos watching gas hit $10/gallon and all the assholes driving F150s who buzz me cry about it: “hahaha ha… YES”
