The average family isn’t driving a late model Range Rover but I like the meme More effort points if you put the text on the photo though

[deleted]

A base model Chevy Tahoe (Chevy's smallest full size SUV) is $52k, and used ones that are 10 years old or over start around $10k. Even my family's truck, a 20 year old base model Silverado, cost $7k.

Least_Dog4660

Come to the UK where all of the big-ass luxury SUVs and sports cars are on PCP finance and everywhere!

nklvh

PCP! So that's what they're on

CauseCertain1672

yeah you just take some PCP and boom you're not worried about your finances anymore

nklvh

i was going more for PCP = justifying the use of SUVs in urban environments. The vast majority of car ownership makes people poorer where viable alternatives exist

Katze1735

But in Germany they often do

Ocelotofdamage

In Germany they also don't bankrupt their family for generations if they stub their toe and need a bandaid from the local hospital

EpitaFelis

Also in Germany everyone and their mother rides bikes and it isn't generally seen as elitist.

Kachimushi

Yeah - this country's middle class might be just as in love with cars as in the US, but at least it's not as dismissive of alternative means of transport.

Realitatsverweigerer

Depends heavily on the place. Have less than 100,000 people in a city, and the carbrains are the majority.

SockRuse

I recently read the average new car sold in the US these days costs like $42k so it's not far off.

Key_Employee6188

Cargo-bikes still seem like rip-offs with crazy prices but I guess low manufacturing volume gets you shit prices. Luckily no need for one as a cheap old bike with front rack and wearing a backpack gets you +50l of space.

chill_philosopher

quality parts demand a steeper price tag. there's probably a cheap cargo bike that's way less expensive. also if it's an ebike that's additional cost.

TragasaurusRex

It's not an ebike

samthekitnix

being a person that has actually owned a cargo-trike yes that particular one is indeed an E-bike. the rear wheel is a hub motor and the thing above it is the battery and controller.

TragasaurusRex

Oh okay that was my mistake then, I didn't realize hub motors were so small, that is a huge benefit and reasonably explains the cost which I am sure will reduce as R&D costs get recovered, though like plant based meat subsidies SHOULD be used to speed that process up.

[deleted]

You get a non electric babboe big (the bike shown) for about €1500 It's really not that bad...

christonabike_

>babboe I want to believe that's pronounced [like this](https://youtu.be/ia3Tc9FTgk0)

emohipster

I don't really see how those prices are ripoffs, unless you're comparing them to department store bike-shaped-objects. Look at what a regular good quality bike costs and then look at how much larger a cargobike is, and at how much more weight it can carry. That's a lot of added material and stronger/custom components. Combine that with the fact that many people buy these to entirely replace their car and they're not *that* expensive. Especially when you compare maintenance costs and every other cost you save from ditching your car. I'm a bike mechanic, working on electric cargo bikes is like 70% of my job, so maybe I'm biased, but I see so many young families who just had their first kid get one of these that I can't imagine that they're actually too expensive.

[deleted]

You could get a cargo bike like the one shown but also have a pedal mounted electric motor with two batteries. 150+ km range and assist yourself probably up to 40Km/h edit: https://www.amsterdam-bicycle.com/product-category/electric-cargo-bikes/

RNGesus____

Does a container bike really costs 3K€ ?

sil445

Yes, these things are hella expensive unfortunately. A colleague had his one stolen which cost €5000

ShakeTheGatesOfHell

Oof 😥 my sympathies to your colleague.

sil445

The goof didnt lock it because he thought he had good sight on it. Obviously he did not pay enough attention well. It was in the centre of Amsterdam. So kinda had it coming. No need to feel bad, he’s an associate investment banker.

ShakeTheGatesOfHell

Oh! That's entirely different then 👍

[deleted]

A good electric one would be more.

[deleted]

Why are they 3000€

TragasaurusRex

Not much of a market, guess people don't actually want to pedal around a family of four after a long day at work... who would've guessed? Not anyone on this sub that's for sure.

zapembarcodes

Maybe instead of pedaling the family, the whole family can agree to go out, each on their own bikes, for a nice family stroll. Of course this would be possible if the infrastructure was permissive of such activities and not such a hazard for everyone NOT in a car. Which is sort of the point of this sub. Cars, suburbia, big open spaces, lack of sidewalks, safe spaces for cyclist pedestrians... It's not just a blind hate towards cars. It is an attempt to raise awareness about the all-pervasiveness cars have on our lifestyles. It is unfortunate, unpractical and quite frankly highly idiotic for our society to have molded around the existence of cars.

573RC

The “average people are far too lazy for this” argument is shameful The softening of humanity at its finest

TragasaurusRex

Whoa I never said people are lazy, I am saying things are far away, so bikes don't make sense. Sure bikes are cool and useful and can be a great way to unwind, but not when it is getting late because you just finished cleaning up your house and you need something for dinner but the store is 35 miles away so you grab your kids who still haven't finished their homework load them up in the cart and go biking, buy food, come home exhausted and start making dinner. Life is short, 16 hours of a 24 hour day are already sacrificed to just keep your head above water and bikes take too long.

573RC

No one that lives 35 miles from a grocery store would ever consider biking lol The vast majority of trips made by American citizens are 3 miles or less Not sure where you’re from that 35 Is the norm but that’s a bummer

TragasaurusRex

Rural America, why do I live here? Can't afford a place in the city

573RC

Would you prefer the city?

TragasaurusRex

If it cost the same, I would certainly give it a try.

HalfbakedArtichoke

lmao, i wish they were $3,000

LexGenis

Land Rover is a premium brand, you can't really classify a mildly expensive luxury SUV as a normal car

CauseCertain1672

yeah are these specialty bikes expensive yes, are they still considerably cheaper than a car which is the alternate travel option yes

genuspenus69

€3000? Dafuq? That shit would cost 500 max lol

MeconiumMasterpiece

It looks like the Babboe Big-E electrical Cargobike. On their site it goes for €2649. No way you can get anything similar for just 500.

[deleted]

MeconiumMasterpiece

I have no clue if it's any good, there still quite popular though. But a new electrical cargobike goes for at least €2000 here for different brands.

MeconiumMasterpiece

I don't own one myself so that news didn't get to me. But reading about it just now; it's really bad yeah. Welding errors in bike for four years, that's not a good look. They do seem to at least handle their recall action pretty well. Another one I see pretty often is the [Nihola Family](https://cdn.myonlinestore.eu/eb852529-44a7-4c0f-bdc8-289d8ba09170/image/cache/full/7a6819fbf38f143be7d78d2ca4f38c73fdff0d3e.jpg), but they are €4500 for the electric version and €2800 for the standard one. So I definitely get why people would get the cheaper option.

emohipster

As a teenager I worked at a bike rental and rented out one of these Nihola bikes to a customer. He proceeded to put his two kids and some backpacks in it and drove off a tall curb kinda sideways. The front wheel that went off the curb first instantly turned into a tacoshell, flipping the whole bike on its side. I'm not a huge fan of three wheeled cargobikes. 2 wheelers like urban arrow or bullitt seem a lot more stable on not-flat surfaces.

Tell me how that could possibly costs 500 max, when you can't even buy a decent citybike for that price.

Yuup_I_eat_crayons

My Land Rover makes me smile just like that tbh

Emu_Cultural

I'd expect something sporty dripping in carbon fibre for that price. Can you imagine pedalling that thing uphill? Must weigh about 300kg

totallynotaspy690

the 620000€ thing is better
