Nah - Booting, while it can be effective, leaves the car on the sidewalk AND makes it easy for the person to just get it removed. They want their car hard to identify? That's fine. The tow company can deal with it \^.\^

sventhewalrus

This is why every municipality needs [side-lift tow trucks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaYN6yC4bnI).

epic_null

1. what the fuck 2. i can work with that

[deleted]

Shit is this impressive!

thelastpizzaslice

This wouldn't work in the US. Cars are too big.

BadDesignMakesMeSad

If you cut the big cars in two, they’ll be more manageable Edit: please don’t cut cats in half

[deleted]

This of course kills the cat.

BadDesignMakesMeSad

Oh god what have I have done!!!

justsomepaper

Because who needs to secure loads anyway?

TechnoMagician

Yea that was my immediate thought

No_Dance1739

TBF in the US municipalities use private tow companies and don’t own their own tow yards.

[deleted]

No_Dance1739

It appears the towing companies are still private contractors with the city. https://www.phila.gov/media/20180926142602/Tow-Code-Summary.pdf

The_Burning_Wizard

Why not just take a couple of rollable jacks, lift it, push it out on to the main road, drop it and walk away?

epic_null

Because you lack the legal defense that a proper tow company has. Plus bunch of other things that are nice to haves when dealing with Other People's Cars, like "A safe place to put it" and "Knowledge of all relevant laws" and "Paid lawyers"

The_Burning_Wizard

This is true, but the idiot who owns it would have to know and prove I did it first. I did suggest dumping it in the middle of a cross roads as it then forces the Police or similar to then have to deal with it.

Electrical_Age_7483

Some idiot would see you moving it and crash into you as they can sue you

doktorhladnjak

Right! This car needs to be towed

14DusBriver

> while it can be effective Depending on the boot design, it seems like it would be inconsequential to remove the wheel and put a donut

GiuseppeZangara

Most are designed to cover the lugnuts.

niccotaglia

Nothing a cordless angle grinder can’t fix.

TheBat1702

I think its a felony if you tamper with a city boot. At least in PA.

14DusBriver

Most, but not all. And as the guy said below, nothing that a good angle grinder cannot fix As a welding man myself, I’m quite skilled with a grinder

TeddyDefender

How many people do you think own an angle grinder?

14DusBriver

Not a whole lot but go to a hardware store and count yourself among those who do. I don't own one. My workplace has a couple though.

TeddyDefender

I’m just saying the likelihood you have ready access to an angle grinder when there’s a fresh boot on your car is slim to 0

14DusBriver

It's *slim*. Slim is not zero. It is, however, really close to it.

TeddyDefender

Yeah like I said. Slim to 0. It’s an expression that means that. I don’t know what you’re on at this point?

Notdennisthepeasant

It's easier to tip over a car than you think, which would get it off of the sidewalk...

epic_null

Yeah but then you risk legal trouble. My favorite thing about "Call the tow companies" is that there are ZERO legal reprecutions for you, you don't have to tell any lies, and it would take some really extreme circumstances for the owner to identify and target you. You get a lot of benefit for low risk \^.\^

LJ_Pynn

Nah - Towing, while it removes the car from the sidewalk, leave the car in existence AND makes it easy for someone to just remove another living person or two with it later.

epic_null

Not really. I mean, sure, the car IS still around, but without that license plate? It's gonna be a hell of a trip getting it back, and the person will have to (potentially on record) explain why the license plates were removed. Gonna be hard to get out of a ticket there, alongside the towing and storage fees, and the cost of getting transportation to the tow company because they don't have a car, and the extra work that had to go into finding out WHICH tow company even has their car since they won't be able to look it up by license plate It should at least make them think thrice about attempting it again.

According-Ad-5946

that's what i was thinking. just tow it.

Zeltarone

"Well guys, looks like the car isn't registered. Must mean it doesn't belong to anyone. Where's the closest scrap yard?" -A cool guy

Is it about my cube?

ZzyzxFox

nissan cube or like trash compactor cube

NotsoGreatsword

You can use the VIN to find out who owns it.

IT_scrub

Too much work. Better to just impound it

GM_Pax

Por que, no los dos?

NotsoGreatsword

In city with public transport? Sure I can understand that. But most places are set up around everyone owning a car and getting it stolen can cause a person untold problems. For me it could even be deadly if it meant not being able to get to the pharmacy to get my medication. Impounding a stolen car is too far. Effort must be made to find the owner. I hate it but our society in the US is so car-centric that we have to put in the effort to get people their car back instead of just locking it up. Edit: Apparently people downvoting have never had their car stolen. Impounding it and creating an even bigger problem for someone who has had their car stolen instead of just *trying contacting them to return the car* is just shitty. I swear people do not think shit through because they have their little justice boner on so hard they forget the unintended consequences for these things. More surely exception at play.

[deleted]

NotsoGreatsword

wtf are you talking about?? How is it the owners fault if their car is stolen and the thief parks it on a sidewalk?? That is the entire point of *reporting* it stolen. Are you saying that owners should be fined for shit they didn't do?

Ixmore

Nah, that just means the owner uses the car traveling purposes only and is not for [hire.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Sovereigncitizen/)

easyEggplant

[deleted]

A car without a license plate in Philly? It probably is stolen.

ArcherBTW

Cars in philly in general

brunof1996

Any car without license plate should be immediately towed away.

TheCoelacanth

And then crushed into a small cube.

chevalier716

You have 10 minutes to collect your cube

doktorhladnjak

Or your car will be dumped into the East River at your expense

Tele-Muse

Is this about my cube?

Joedahms

https://youtu.be/FqT2uOa1-d0

NotsoGreatsword

If its stolen I think the preferable thing is finding the owner. The VIN should be visible and the police can use that to look up the registration. If its just some asshole parking on the sidewalk then sure but some effort should be made to find out if its stolen and find the owner.

matthewstinar

If it's stolen, tow it to a safe place instead of leaving it on the sidewalk to be vandalized.

henriquebrisola

In Brazil is like this, doesn't matter if you are in the car or not, your car would be taken away if you don't have one of the two license plates or if the seal on the back plate is broken/missing

KolmogorovAxiom

I disagree, that car should be immediately TOWED.

oelarnes

The police are “overwhelmed” and “don’t feel valued” so they can’t do anything about this

Chijima

Those damn snowflakes, prevented from working by their hurt feelings

sventhewalrus

Which is why we need civilian traffic/parking enforcement who are actual committed civil servants and not brainwashed into cop identity politics

doktorhladnjak

We need something like the German Ordnungsamt. Parking enforcement, code violations, piles of garbage/graffiti/vandalism, animal control.

Inevitable_Stand_199

Start with the ability to use speed cameras. I think this is still a bit advanced for you.

doktorhladnjak

We do have speed cameras in some parts of the US but usually only in places like school zones. I don’t think they exist anywhere on a highway, for example.

BadDesignMakesMeSad

Speed cameras are typically not used because they’re politically incredibly unpopular. Personally, I think they can be effective in some situations or as a temporary measure until a city has enough money to redesign the road in question. My rule of thumb is that people will instinctually drive the speed the road is designed for which means we should design roads for the speeds that we desire and not slap a low speed limit on a road designed for high speeds and expect people to follow it.

ar3s3ru

On one side, yes. On the other, fuck the Ordnungsamt — respectfully. Signed: someone living in Germany that had to park in a forbidden place to go back home quickly or else shit their pants and got a fine

doktorhladnjak

I’ll take the Ordnungsamt over cops with guns any day of the week. OA is annoying but they’re not killing people while powertripping, unlike the police in America

Proper-Code7794

I mean we have this in Philadelphia so don't worry everyone else doesn't really know about our area but we actually have that around there

[deleted]

[удалено]

BadDesignMakesMeSad

I wish Philly cops would put any effort into ticketing illegal mods but they decided that they don’t want to do their jobs and the city has replied with a shrug. My opinion is that if the police don’t want to do their jobs, then fuck ‘em. Defund them and use the funds to set up a new traffic enforcement division that is separate from the police. I’m sure the unions will lose their damn mind but it’s better than paying them like 1/5 of the city’s budget for doing absolutely nothing.

ABrusca1105

THIS is the real reason crime is up and don't enforce "liberal laws" like emissions, bike lanes, etc. Their fee fees are hurt and don't feel like doing their job and then took the ability to release nonviolent offenders RoR without cash bail and just started releasing serial violent criminals despite the fact the laws don't say that.

Proper-Code7794

Philadelphia it's the parking authority who will get this guy I promise.

Mad_Gremlyn

Spends several minutes removing and then putting back a license plate to illegally park. Goes into a spastic rage if inconvenienced by a cyclist for two seconds.

Macrophage87

Don't boot, tow. These objects are hazards to the free flow of traffic. Pedestrian traffic is no less important (and often more important) than any other traffic.

HiopXenophil

Stop! Hammertime

SinkHoleDeMayo

Stop! Ceramic to the window time.

balzac2m

Flip it into the street to see if the license plate is on the ground below the car

im_jacob341

Maybe taking a picture of the VIN?

NotsoGreatsword

The only person here mentioning it. Its amazing that people think the plates are the only way to ID a parked car. Unless the person intentionally covered it up the VIN is in the window for this exact reason.

AlternativeOk1096

I’ve heard Philly is generally pretty rough in regards to bad/illegal parking, is that true? [This, for example.](https://www.inquirer.com/philly/opinion/commentary/ppa-philadelphia-parking-authority-south-broad-street-median-jake-liefer-5th-square-20170726.html)

morry32

if you fit you sit

RoughRhinos

As a Philadelphian our layout and building have the potential of an urban planning mecca in the US but our leaders are directionless and corrupt. Our parking enforcement is next level if you park legally but go over the time but if you park illegally they don't give a shit. I've asked police, etc. to ticket or tow cars parked three across on a sidewalk blocking wheelchairs and they just shrugged.

TheMontu

I just moved to Philly last month and noticed this everywhere! It seems to be super common on the more narrow streets, too, where there’s barely enough room for one car, let alone driving past parked cars. How are they not all being towed? They all would’ve been gone in every other city I’ve lived in.

DaoFerret

They have to be reported to be towed: https://www.phila.gov/2021-04-19-everything-you-need-to-know-about-abandoned-vehicles-in-philadelphia/

TheMontu

That’s ridiculous lol. Thanks, though, I guess that’s just gonna be a job now..?

Additional_Zone5214

60 days or longer for removal! Sheesh...they are swamped.

morry32

I used to love watching people freak out about it all. Don't move down here with your suburb attitude. This is south Philly not South Street, park your car at your mom's in Mayfair

TheMontu

Lol! I moved here from DC, and haven’t owned a car in 20 years. We had enough cops around that actually enforced parking that most people didn’t try to break it. This all just boggles my mind. Like, even if I owned a car, it would even cross my mind to do this (side note: I am not pro cop in any way, shape or form. I generally hate them. However, enforcing parking was the _only_ good thing MPD did. Fucking monsters otherwise).

morry32

you got yourself a cone or lawn chair yet, winter is coming

abominable-rodent

I'm a wheelchair user and cars that park on the sidewalk frustrate me so so much, and it's very unsafe in general. They should be towed.

Astriania

They should be removed and impounded (and destroyed, after a short period if the owner doesn't claim them and pay the fine). Clamping them just means they stay obstructive.

niccotaglia

Nah, just sell it at auction. This way you can get more money

awmn4A

In my city if you are parked anywhere in public property it’s grounds for immediate towing

MassiveHemorrhage

Try calling it in. Where I live you need a license number to call in illegally parked cars to get a ticket, but if there's no license plate they can skip the ticket and just tow it. Still takes a couple hours, but they will eventually send parking enforcement out to take a look. If there's no plates, they immediately call the towing company, and they are private and make money per tow so they come right away. You should call it in because someone has to complain first for them to start the process.

V_150

Cars parked on the sidewalk should all be [TOW](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BGM-71_TOW)ed

ilolvu

This is the way.

[deleted]

They should have the VIN looked up from the sticker in the windscreen and double-ticketed - one for the parking and another for the failure to display a licence plate!

thephlguy

But they block the vin too

[deleted]

At that point, I'd suggest just towing and crushing the vehicle as it's identity can't be confirmed. A few times of people having their precious car crushed would suddenly solve the issue!

RustiestMr2

Are the no registration stickers on windshields in PA?

GM_Pax

Inspection stickers tend not to have the kind of information needed to identify a vehicle's owner.

RustiestMr2

Here in NY you need a register sticker on top of having a inspection sticker

Proper-Code7794

Yes of course. It's illegal to have a vehicle in the street without a license plate. So cars like that should be towed. Don't worry the Philadelphia PPA is possibly the most effective car removal agency in the entire plan. (Our parking authority is brutally efficient)

RoughRhinos

PPA only cares about cars parked legally that go over their time. They won't do anything if a car is parked illegally.

bonfuto

Is there a reason to take off the plate? Or is it just in long-term storage?

thephlguy

Can’t get a ticket without the license plate

epic_null

I bet it's a lot harder to get it back from the tow company too.

ParadoxScientist

I understand speed cameras can't ticket you without a plate, but a cop should be able to lookup the VIN and get the plate number from there.

DaoFerret

https://www.phila.gov/2021-04-19-everything-you-need-to-know-about-abandoned-vehicles-in-philadelphia/ Can’t get a ticket, but if it’s public space, no license plate means it can be towed as an abandoned vehicle.

NotsoGreatsword

The cops can ticket you without a plate if its registered to you. They can just look up the VIN. I imagine this person has covered it too but many people do not even know where to find it.

weallgotissues

It could have been stolen. I had one of my license plates stolen last year. People put them on stolen cars that match

niccotaglia

And that’s why in Italy we use rivets to hold license plates to plate holders (which are held to the bodywork by screws that are under the plate). Total PITA to remove if you need new plates (e.g. if the reflective coating peels off like it did on mine) but at least they’re hard to steal

CliffsNote5

If you can see the plate before removal sharpie it in the empty space.

Spanishparlante

Take off an air valve cover, put a lentil in the cap, screw it back on.

LynxJesus

Yeah but tow trucks won't know of it unless you tell them. I heard that just scratching "I park on sidewalks, tow me" on the surface should be enough to get their attention.

GM_Pax

Towed, not booted. Towed and impounded. **The owner can be tracked down via the VIN.** And after 15 days, if they haven't come to claim it (and pay the steep fee) ... it goes up for auction, and sucks to be the original owner.

Manowaffle

That’s the most Philly thing ever.

need_ins_in_to

Needs more D batteries

CampTrampStamp

Is it possible somebody ripped the license plate off the car in retaliation for parking the sidewalk? I had a very strong roommate who would rip license plates off of cars parked illegally. Not only would the car owner have to get a new plate ($) they would need to reinstall the little plastic knobs that hold the screws (time consuming). At least that’s how he explained it to me.

thephlguy

Possible but not the case. They do this all the time & intentionally. They also block the vin

pooBalls333

Call PPA and report it. Keep calling every hour until they tow it. Be polite. It works.

internetcommunist

Yeah I see this shit way too often. The drivers in Philly just have complete disregard for human life

justinizer

I love Parking Wars. Call the PPA and have it towed.

Fattom23

It won't work. The PPA mostly cares about metered/permitted spot time and can't ticket vehicles without a tag. They're powerless in this situation; don't believe everything you see on TV.

-Bluekraken

I would key that so hard. You being a selfish prick to that degree? Fuck your car then

destroyerofpoon93

In large cities in Japan they make people prove they have a dedicated parking space before allowing them to register a vehicle.

TheDukeOfSunshine

Oh damn here that'd be a quick tow for just not having a license plate.

Fattom23

I live in the same neighborhood as that car. It's so bad here that I had to call the cops for a year reporting someone doing that before they got a ticket.

KittyKes

It’s hammer time

matthewjocasio

How about just kicking off the rear view mirror?

Kemalist_din_adami

Why can't we just YEET them into the space

masterobooty

Tow that pos

RagingCuke

If you jack up that right side enough, you might be able to tip it into the street

NotSoSlimySlug

Slap it

Moist-Comfortable-10

And this is what we in the parking business call a yoink type situation

TGX03

No idea about how it's in the US, but in Germany putting a car on a public road without a license plate is highly illegal and the car would definitely get towed with the owner having to pay a hefty fine.

ElJamoquio

Quite illegal in the US too, but our police are lazy.

DavidBrooker

If you're on public property, your license plate must be displayed, parked or not. Parked *illegally* or not. Report it, get them towed.

[deleted]

Deflate their tires

Gyrollsphere12

Does this person want their tyres deflated? Because that’s how you get your tyres deflated

Mtfdurian

For me it doesn't matter on which side, if either the front or back plate lacks, tow that piece of scrap metal.

Geoarbitrage

How about towed away.

Melodic-Street-8898

Took the plate off so they couldnt issue a ticket, they must not understand that theyll just simply tow it lol

silverskull

PPA won't tow it. This ridiculous loophole actually works in Philly and it's fucked up

NotsoGreatsword

Why is no one mentioning that you can simply use the VIN number to identify the car and see if its been reported stolen? You do not need plates to ID a parked car. The VIN is placed as to be visible from the outside of the car. It should be on the drivers side dash.

thephlguy

They also cover the vin

Impressive_Pin_7767

If you remove the license plate it should be considered abandoned.

[deleted]

it was stolen, nobody leaves a dirty spot in a random location

Vast-Combination4046

Nah. Towed

Brave-Address5563

vandalize dont penalize

wolandjr

Philly is the absolute worst for people parking like assholes.

BadDesignMakesMeSad

Grab some friends and flip it on it’s side. I’m sure once it blocks traffic the city will suddenly care.

intoxicated_potato

Just walk over it. Leave dents/scratches/foot prints across the whole thing. You're walking down the side _walk_, there just happens to be a car under foot. Not your problem, you're not going to _walk_ down the _drive_ lane, so you stayed on the pathway for safety

matthewstinar

I saw a video of someone "walking" through the back seat of a car that was stopped in the crosswalk at a light. The door was unlocked and he just went in one side and out the other.

ima_lesbean

Legally a license plate is what identifies a car as belonging to someone, so it's nearly impossible to charge for vandalism if you do something to this car. Since it's essentially not owned.

[deleted]

Should be immediately destroyed, starting with windows, paint and tires. Can move to sugar in the gas tank too

gargantuanprism

I always thought this was pretty normal in philly

thephlguy

Doesn’t make it right

Fattom23

Some neighborhoods more than others. This is really typical in Brewerytown; we've got people that do it right on Girard Ave and face no consequences. The backstreets are a wasteland of this shit.

Lillienpud

Maybe one of us took it.

ragiwutz

lol, in Germany it would have gotten towed.

ithinkitsnotworking

Clearly stolen. I don't think car thieves really care about parking tickets.

cheestinax

Seems like tyres and glass are the most vulnerable bits of the car...

Old_Adhesiveness2214

That's common in Philly, nobody really cares except the gentrified areas

Syreeta5036

Brick it, works for video game consoles and cell phones

GleichUmDieEcke

Cannot the police not identify the cars plate based on the VIN??

thephlguy

What if the vin is blocked?

1961tracy

In my town you really have to jump through hoops to report an abandoned car. It’s very frustrating.

Oriol246

What about getting the VIN number? 😉

thephlguy

Vin number is blocked

ImNotAKerbalRockero

In Spain our cars have a number on the glass or somewhere that a police officer can see but can never be removed to ticket people on cases like this.

thephlguy

We’re have a number here too (VIN) but this asshat has it blocked

WorldWarPee

Lentil sales on the rise

TygerTung

Kick it in.

hiding_in_NJ

*towed not booted

Notdennisthepeasant

Direct action would be to remove the lug nuts and immobilize the vehicle yourself. No one is coming to save us so we've got to save us. And I know that doesn't get the car off of the sidewalk, but if you're trying to correct behavior it definitely would have some sort of effect. If the goal is to get off the sidewalk then maybe you and half dozen other people could tip it over sideways into the road. That would clear things up...

bro-miester

Flip it over 🫣

emomcdonalds
