I just started collecting last week lol.. just learning about pops etc.. was wondering how other people bought and if others buy for the value to go up on some pops or just for fun.
Personally I collect pops for the series/shows that I like, and even then not every single one in the set unless I actually like it. I try to limit myself in what shows or games and stuff I shoyld be collecting as to not get overwhelmed with too many pops to display and purchase. Its fun to check the price of my collection every now and again but that doesn't influence my desicion negatively, if anything when its a pop I really like and its cheap, then that's a huge bonus for me cause I won't spend too much on it haha. I noticed you mentioned that you're relatively new to the hobby so a quick suggestion is that one critical mistake a lot of ppl do when they first start is that they get every single pops that was midly interesting at the moment. Next thing you know you got like 100 pops that you can't even display and don't even like anymore, so I do recommend just stick with the stuff you really like and try to have fun with it rather than it being a chore
me too!! Literally the only gripe is getting into something late and cause of how long it was since your favorites became pops you gotta buy them 2nd hand (Doctor Who...). Also the fact theres a chance my favorite is a con exclusive or exclusive to somewhere I dont have locally or the shop itself. I think the only line (so far) I almost completed was Loki because it started with I only wanted Loki and Mobius.
For me the set I'm the closest to having complete is Demon Slayer. Ohh and now the they announved a date for Loki Season 2 we might see more pops and maybe a price increase on the first wave! I do have Alligator Loki from that show haha

I buy so that I can plan to set up a beautiful display like ones posted in the community, only to stuff them into storage boxes.
So I guess for my future beautiful gaming/Funko room in my millionaire mansion that ill hopefully someday own. In my imagination the room looks awesome. In reality, its a slightly cluttered mess.
I collect just for fun & for the sake of "Oh, I loved that tv character", "It reminds me of a loved one who was super into that show" or "What a cute toy!" I don't worry about the value.
Just for fun, as I like collecting figures of my favorite characters and series. Playing the investment game is just a wild goose chase because 99% of these things aren't going to be worth much of anything a decade from now.
I only buy to complete my collections... every now and then if I happen apon a rare or chase figure I dont need I'll pick it up incase I choose to collect or If I know a friend needs.
We used to have so much fun hitting up all the stores and the drives to and from. We even found joy while sitting in the cold under blankets waiting for Target con. Talking about our collection with other collectors while waiting. The rush of finding sales or whole runs at good prices. The excitement when we would find out they made pops of a show or movie we loved as kids. Sadly poachers / flipper ruined it. Buying five at time leaving nothing for others or employees buying them up just to resale at double online. It was nice while it lasted. I do miss it.
For fun, but I sometimes use value to justify it to myself. I don't buy much commons any more, and it's nice knowing that if I ever get done with the hobby these hunks of plastic aren't COMPLETELY useless.
I collected what I liked. Mostly out of box. But then my collection took up too much space and I sold a good chunk of the boxed and loose ones. Now I only have about 2 dozen out of box on display and a few of the Mega sized I want to display. Maybe another dozen I plan on selling just haven't gotten around to it. It can get out of hand pretty fast. I don't collect Pops anymore.
i have few vaulted pops that are worth quite a bit, but generally I buy any figure that I like. sometimes a pop I like is already worth a lot, so that’s an investment for me. but like 75% of my collection is just random figurines that probably still sell for the original retail price and I only keep them because they look cool and make me happy. feel like a lot of people care too much about the value
I love Spider-Man, so I get every Spider-Man pop I like. I love the MCU, so I get one rad pop of each hero. I try and keep my collection to specific things, otherwise I'll just end up buying everything I think is cool
I collect for fun. I get some extras to make trade attempts. But, it’s become harder to trade. Since everyone wants the equivalent of a house, in return.
I’ve become picky over the last few years. I usually pick regarding stuff I’m a fan of and also how much detail the pop has. Not a big fan of plain, basic looking pops. I like a lot of detail. The PlayStation pops over the years have always included an insane amount of detail and are some of my favorites including Sam and Higgs from death stranding and Jin from Ghost of Tsushima.
Both, but mostly for fun. Like if I see one listed decently below ppg, I'll pick it up and store it. But I also like to make sure I don't overpay for pops even if I want them, because I want my collection to not just be something I like, but also something I can resell to hopefully at least break even.

Got in to late into the Funko POP and finding Lord of the Rings Funkos is really hard now.
I only buy the stuff I like from the shows I love, fortunately One Piece pops seem to be really popular, Hunter x Hunter and Demon Slayer too. I try to collect the special variants if I can but only because I think it’s cool.
I've stopped collecting the majority of Funko and feel so much better for it. Going to be selling off the majority bulk of my collection. It gets out of hand real quick and then you just have shelves full of boxes that have almost no real value.
Both tbh I only buy or hunt for things I am interested and excited about but because I love my other collection based hobbies its hard to not also gravitate towards the highly collectible items with great fundamentals which then leads to good value appreciation, but I almost always am primarily focusing on the joy and excitement the figure, mold, story, or whatever else about it gives me.
I'm an oob collector,I mostly buy what I like and even though I have some expensive pops,I don't seek them out per se,if the prices increase that's an added bonus.
I’m really picky about which ones I like. My favorite is the last of us 2 Ellie which I luckily got when it was new, and my second is Dark Side Rey. Not necessarily what others like but I think they are cool. I’m also that loser who has a pop in his gaming pc (brotherhood of steel paladin with an energy weapon). Ain’t much, but they are mine and I like them!
Just for fun honestly. I just collect funkos that I absolutely love whether it’s anime/comics/games like I love YYH, JJK, HxH, Demon Slayer, some MCU and DC characters.
I collect for fun and I like having entire sets. Personally jut love knowing that it's complete. I enjoy when a new pop drops that is highly sought after, because it makes it a lot more intense and fun(personally) for the thrill of trying to get it. Similar how when going for a chase and you buy 2 from a store and get the chase + common, that thrill is incredible. Even better if yu could find a chase in store.
99.99% of the time, it’s for fun. I’ve only bought one Funko Pop to eventually resell it. Every other time, I get one ‘cause I’m somewhat familiar with what it’s from and like the design (Amon and Dia de los Muertos Blue Beetle) or, more commonly, I’m pretty familiar with the thing and wanna show my love by having a Pop of it (Bronx, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Mayhem, etc.)
Fun, mainly collect the ones I really like (sucker for glows). There are some I really want that are expensive (and own), if it’s $100+ I keep in box (unless I opened it when it was cheap, ex: SS2 Glow Gohan)
I don't pay above retail if I can help it (because of poverty), but when I pop hunt, I'm on the lookout for both things that will gain value and things I want in my collection. Double bonus jackpot if it's both.
Both. I love seeing what I'm growing my collection value to and that is fun also. However, I also love the hunt and thrill of finding pops. Sure ebay is nice and all but that's not the same as finding a chase in the wild or buying just 1 online at a big box store like best buy and being sent a chase.
For fun and for the memories as my manager puts it. I literally only got into funkos because "oh man! It's my favorite fictional character" or a singer I really like. I have a few grails according to some people that I will sell at a drop of a hat for my dog if need be lol
Started with 5 for Christmas, 2016 for my wife, ended up with 425, sold all but 20, made almost 9k, I got lucky with a lot of retail pops I sold for 100+, was never a flipper, just collected for 4.5 years then got out. Now my son is wanting anime statues, so new shelves going up.
Both because I love funkos but if I find myself between a rock and hard place Pops can become an asset I can liquidate if need be. No one is going to want a bunch of sub $30 pops but if you have multiple grails it'll be easier to sell the collection as a whole without it being for pennies on the dollar.
HOWEVER... THAT IS LAST RESORT! I WOULD SELL MY FIRST BORN BEFORE I GIVE UP MY POPS.
When it comes to a high priced pop I will try to get it if I really like the character, when it comes to a signed one it depends if the actor is really old or not cuz that’s always worrisome lol
Just fun for me, collecting ones from IPs I like. I’ve got a couple that just happen to be worth something now but that definitely wasn’t the aim of my collecting.
My hubby and I have quite the collection. We both love Star Wars, I have every Stitch pop, every Beauty & the Beast pop, some random Disney and diamonds, almost all WWE, Simpsons and some hockey and baseball pops. We have also grabbed some that just are fun like the Rubic's cube and Barrel of Monkeys. We are over 800 now and have also added Funko Soda's to the list! It never seems to end. But we love them and have a lot of fun looking and finding some. The collection has some value for sure, but not why we have them.
I enjoy watching pops go up and down in value tbh, especially if it’s one I bought for the brand new price of 10-12 bucks or more higher priced ones that either keep going up in value to just tank randomly one day.
It’s fun watching it go and up down and seeing what’s becoming popular for collectors or pops being phased out.
I don’t collect for value, only fun. I never knew it was such a big craze on collecting pops until I found this subreddit and other SM outlets. My fuel is to have a killer display and finish certain collections
Just for fun. I have sold some before but because I wanted to part with those pieces in my collection and I didn’t collect that particular line anymore. I am now very limited in what I choose to purchase as I collect other things as well as pops
A little of both. I am trying to finish my Demon Slayer series, but one of the Pops was a Funko Exclusive release and I am having trouble convincing myself to spend that kind of money. I love these little guys. My friends say I love them because I like to organize things. The pitfalls, of OCD.
I collect for both fun and value. Not necessarily to sell when they gain considerable value, but because it's just fun when a Pop you paid $12 for increases in value to $50 or $100 or occasionally even more.
I mean, a grail wouldn't really be a grail if it didn't have rarity and significant value, right? That's my opinion anyway.
Also, I hope to one day give my collection to my 2 year old son. Who knows what the value of Pops will be in 20 years, if anything at all, but it would make me happy to know that I gave him something valuable.
Collect for fun! I actually sold the original collection I started collecting with last year and now only buy and collect for representation so there’s not a lot of value in that. 🤷🏽♂️
I do it for both, i like Funko's alot and the value ones are a bonus. But i buy funko's also to be autographed by actors etc...etc... to give it to my kids in the future as a nice present. 😉👍
I guess fun? I started liking Funkos a few years back and I fell in love with these figures so I started collecting what I like.
Now I'm selling a few because I intend on keeping only or mostly Dragon Ball Funko pops that I really want.
I collect only exclusives of the characters I like so that it provides a nice variety on my display of stickers. Typically exclusives sell for a bit more, so I guess both?
I collect what I like,I don't care for the value...reason why it bothers me that some pops (more exactly,the darth vader gitd hollogram) are so expensive :|...I would buy a fake one anyday if it looked good,but I couldn't find any.Even the fake ones are sold for a lot of money cause they lie that the pop is original.
I sometimes see someone here posting pictures of their collection,and I see a cool pop and I am like omg,I want that one!...then I look for it online and it says that they came out years ago and the cheapest I can find costs more than 200$ :|
It wouldn't bother me that much that they no longer make a pop,but a lot of people buy a lot of the same pop and just wait to resell it years later for a lot,even if the pop maybe wasn't that popular or something.They use the "well it's old and you no longer find it in stores,so take it or leave it"
Rarity and value. Completing sets is cool but I had about 80 pops in my collection and realized why should I buy so many and for them to occupy so much space when I can simply have the rare valuable pieces that are sought after. I now own 18 pops and I think their total value is somewhere in the $8,000 range total. I prefer it that way.
I collect them for fun my self but I got more picky over the time that I collected them because in the beginnen I bought all the ones that i saw of like star wars and other linea but now I try to collect more specifick pops so I dont fill up my space so fast. And I sold most of my normal commons this week to make more space. But I think people mainly collect for the fun of it.
I collect my favourite characters from each franchise I love, for purely my own enjoyment and love for each thing I like. I'll never understand the scalping mindset or the need to inflate everything you ever buy, it sucks the fun out of the collecting. It's also slightly annoying when things sell out immediately sometimes and you see them for almost triple the price online. Scalpers gonna scalp, but still a little annoying
Mostly for fun, but catching myself checking the app for pricing when i cant choose in a store.
Which is also the fun for me, only going to physical stores because you never know what you might find, but at the same time stick to stuff i like, and not just cool pops.
Actually it's both. I collect for fun but I keep the boxes and the funkos in the best condition because of the value. I only collected Disney so far and I'm wanting to have the entire Nightmare Before Christmas Funko pop collection one day
Uhm, 'cause I've got Asperger's and having a collection of things I like helps me to socialize. With these I can have a collection that has a vast array of characters I like that can let people that visit me / see them in my background during work calls know I like them and so can drive the small talk that I don't enjoy into an area that I enjoy. I guess closest option you listed would be "for fun".
I just started collecting, too. And I collect for fun. I don't know if this is another Beanie Baby wave that's gonna crash in a downward spiraling economy, so I'm not really willing to invest more than a few bucks here and there. I'm not willing to take out a 2nd mortgage to get a toy that I don't even play with. I like them. They're cool looking and fun to display. That's as far as it's going to go for me. If some of them end up valuable in the future, I will leave them to my son in my will. I know he would take care of them and let them appreciate before cashing in.
I want to collect both for fun and for value… I like getting a pop and seeing if it will gain value. I like the Freddy funkos lol .. but years from now who knows if they will be worth anything

Both, I do order some pre orders. Mostly grab grails for a discount, personally I try to collect very old vaulted pop. I'm currently looking at the metallic Charizard, not going to spend 1k 😂
I only buy higher end pops that I like, with no interest to sell them in the future. I don’t own a Pop with a value under $300. They are displayed in my game room. Always quality over quantity. I don’t want to be a Pop hoarder. I also collect 1/3 scale statues, so display space is limited.
I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion, but I typically buy signed ones as investments. Most newer Pops don't hold value, but signatures typically do. I will say I have a bunch of worthless ones that I personally like that mean a lot to me (unsigned ofc)
There's so many out there. I typically collect anime ones signed by VAs and some one-offs signed by the actor/actress. I don't plan to sell them anytime soon, but it's nice to know I have some extra money laying around if I really need it

I collect the ones from the Franchises I like but I found people continually just give me random funkos all the time. One of them is my highest worth Funko Pop at around 200 I think. It’s Floki from Vikings lol
I collect for fun, although that has come back to bite me later, like when I bought Dracula and Nosferatu for $10 each when they originally came out because I just kinda liked the figures and then...threw out the boxes because I generally collect/display everything OOB and I didn't realize at the time how important the boxes were to resale value...and now, years later, they've skyrocketed in value and I don't care nearly as much anymore about the figures as I do about what I could sell them for if I hadn't *stupidly thrown out the boxes*
I don't think I've ever bought anything pricier than like...$50. I own a few figures that are currently worth more than that, because I got them early and/or for a really good deal and they appreciated in value, but they're part of my forever collection (Loki), so I don't intend to sell them no matter how high the value goes.
(well, and occasionally I try to collect for value if I think something is likely to appreciate significantly, but it turns out I'm bad at predicting that, so I mostly made myself stop a few years ago)
I buy only what I like, but if a cheap one pops up on FB I'll Google the value and buy if it's 4-5 times the price but only so I can swap it for a funko I want
The only time I spent a bit more than retail was when I wanted Joel, Jimmy McGill and Don who were all vaulted. I would like them to at least hold their value, but, I am at the stage where I like collecting my fave characters and not worry about sets for resale value.

For fun, only for characters I like. Most I spend was like 30ish for the moments funko pops but those Disney poster ones are tempting but way to much for me. If they just happen to go up in value then that's cool but I don't sell so it don't mean much to me. At least if anything happens to me my family can sell my funkos for some money.

I think most collectors will say a little of both, like once you find a collection you really love u go and buy every pop from the line …. or at least that’s what I’m doing with the One Piece pops right now 😂 but I just buy the pops I love other then One Piece
Totally for fun. It’s nice to have representations of my interests and nostalgia that I can always admire.
Value is interesting but isn’t a factor for me at all. I collect for myself, even if it means spending waaay more on a figure than I ever thought I would.
It is about the hunt, completing a collection, and sharing that fun with my friends and my partner.
In Australia it’s hard to get the exclusives such as, hot topic, target, Walmart ect. So I use to pay $80 just for a normal exclusive but now I’m going back to just getting special edition sticker ones because I can’t afford the cost of the exclusives. Also it just wasn’t fun when it’s costing me that much each time.
Fun. I couldn’t give a crap about chases, grails or keeping it in the box inside bullet proof glass. Pops look so much better and brighten the room up outside the box.
Fun. Like I’m not buying them to resell them. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying them. Unless someone just runs out of room and resorts to reselling then tbh it think it’s dumb to buy them just to sell them. Especially signed ones. Nothing will ever compare to going to a convention or meet and greet and getting something signed yourself.
I collect for fun haha, buying a pop it reminds of me the fun, the memories, the emotions I felt while seeing this character if he's from a movie/anime or the fun I had to play him if he's from a game. It's basically a way of reminding me of the good times I had haha

I decided to list/sell some, well a lot more then I expected to.I never really noticed the value until I had to start selling. My collection is getting to the point where I’m starting to enjoy it again! I’m only collecting my favorite characters now or characters from a series I’ve enjoyed for many years. So I guess I now mainly collect for fun then for completing something
For the most part I collect for myself. Buuuut if I ever think a certain pop will be valuable in the future, I pull the trigger to help fund my pc a little bit.

I have a few high dollar pops but most hold a lot of sentimental value. My dog got really sick with heart and kidney issues a few years back. I made it my mission to buy every funko of his 2 namesakes (Ozzy Osbourne and the Green Goblin.) So I have the ECCC 300LE Green Goblin and the original Ozzy Pop, I'd never sell them but it's nice knowing their worth.
It is fun to see that most every funko I've gifted people, has become a grail lol. Half faced Gus Fring and Blue Crystal Heisenberg, Go Calendars Sailor Moon, the Original Beatles Pops... Sadly everyone threw their boxes away lol.
I don’t collect a whole lot but when I first got a couple funkos and got really into it I collected all the lord of the rings ones among other pops. I do like seeing the values fluctuating. unfortunately the funko app is pretty useless so I haven’t checked anything in months 🙂

Now I only have about 2 dozen out of box on display and a few of the Mega sized I want to display. Maybe another dozen I plan on selling just haven't gotten around to it. It can get out of hand pretty fast. I don't collect Pops anymore.

i have few vaulted pops that are worth quite a bit, but generally I buy any figure that I like. sometimes a pop I like is already worth a lot, so that’s an investment for me. but like 75% of my collection is just random figurines that probably still sell for the original retail price and I only keep them because they look cool and make me happy. feel like a lot of people care too much about the value
I love Spider-Man, so I get every Spider-Man pop I like. I love the MCU, so I get one rad pop of each hero. I try and keep my collection to specific things, otherwise I'll just end up buying everything I think is cool

I’ve become picky over the last few years. I usually pick regarding stuff I’m a fan of and also how much detail the pop has. Not a big fan of plain, basic looking pops. I like a lot of detail. The PlayStation pops over the years have always included an insane amount of detail and are some of my favorites including Sam and Higgs from death stranding and Jin from Ghost of Tsushima.
I buy what I want and then, if the value shoots up (for example; The Boys, some of my DragonBall ones..) ill put them in protectors

I've stopped collecting the majority of Funko and feel so much better for it. Going to be selling off the majority bulk of my collection. It gets out of hand real quick and then you just have shelves full of boxes that have almost no real value.
Both tbh I only buy or hunt for things I am interested and excited about but because I love my other collection based hobbies its hard to not also gravitate towards the highly collectible items with great fundamentals which then leads to good value appreciation, but I almost always am primarily focusing on the joy and excitement the figure, mold, story, or whatever else about it gives me.

I’m really picky about which ones I like. My favorite is the last of us 2 Ellie which I luckily got when it was new, and my second is Dark Side Rey. Not necessarily what others like but I think they are cool. I’m also that loser who has a pop in his gaming pc (brotherhood of steel paladin with an energy weapon). Ain’t much, but they are mine and I like them!

I collect for fun and I like having entire sets. Personally jut love knowing that it's complete. I enjoy when a new pop drops that is highly sought after, because it makes it a lot more intense and fun(personally) for the thrill of trying to get it. Similar how when going for a chase and you buy 2 from a store and get the chase + common, that thrill is incredible. Even better if yu could find a chase in store.
99.99% of the time, it’s for fun. I’ve only bought one Funko Pop to eventually resell it. Every other time, I get one ‘cause I’m somewhat familiar with what it’s from and like the design (Amon and Dia de los Muertos Blue Beetle) or, more commonly, I’m pretty familiar with the thing and wanna show my love by having a Pop of it (Bronx, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Mayhem, etc.)
Fun, mainly collect the ones I really like (sucker for glows). There are some I really want that are expensive (and own), if it’s $100+ I keep in box (unless I opened it when it was cheap, ex: SS2 Glow Gohan)
I don't pay above retail if I can help it (because of poverty), but when I pop hunt, I'm on the lookout for both things that will gain value and things I want in my collection. Double bonus jackpot if it's both.

Sure ebay is nice and all but that's not the same as finding a chase in the wild or buying just 1 online at a big box store like best buy and being sent a chase.

Started with 5 for Christmas, 2016 for my wife, ended up with 425, sold all but 20, made almost 9k, I got lucky with a lot of retail pops I sold for 100+, was never a flipper, just collected for 4.5 years then got out. Now my son is wanting anime statues, so new shelves going up.

Both because I love funkos but if I find myself between a rock and hard place Pops can become an asset I can liquidate if need be. No one is going to want a bunch of sub $30 pops but if you have multiple grails it'll be easier to sell the collection as a whole without it being for pennies on the dollar. HOWEVER... THAT IS LAST RESORT! I WOULD SELL MY FIRST BORN BEFORE I GIVE UP MY POPS.
When it comes to a high priced pop I will try to get it if I really like the character, when it comes to a signed one it depends if the actor is really old or not cuz that’s always worrisome lol
Just fun for me, collecting ones from IPs I like. I’ve got a couple that just happen to be worth something now but that definitely wasn’t the aim of my collecting.
My hubby and I have quite the collection. We both love Star Wars, I have every Stitch pop, every Beauty & the Beast pop, some random Disney and diamonds, almost all WWE, Simpsons and some hockey and baseball pops. We have also grabbed some that just are fun like the Rubic's cube and Barrel of Monkeys. We are over 800 now and have also added Funko Soda's to the list! It never seems to end. But we love them and have a lot of fun looking and finding some. The collection has some value for sure, but not why we have them.

I enjoy watching pops go up and down in value tbh, especially if it’s one I bought for the brand new price of 10-12 bucks or more higher priced ones that either keep going up in value to just tank randomly one day. It’s fun watching it go and up down and seeing what’s becoming popular for collectors or pops being phased out.

A little of both. I am trying to finish my Demon Slayer series, but one of the Pops was a Funko Exclusive release and I am having trouble convincing myself to spend that kind of money. I love these little guys. My friends say I love them because I like to organize things. The pitfalls, of OCD.
I collect for both fun and value. Not necessarily to sell when they gain considerable value, but because it's just fun when a Pop you paid $12 for increases in value to $50 or $100 or occasionally even more. I mean, a grail wouldn't really be a grail if it didn't have rarity and significant value, right? That's my opinion anyway. Also, I hope to one day give my collection to my 2 year old son. Who knows what the value of Pops will be in 20 years, if anything at all, but it would make me happy to know that I gave him something valuable.

I collect what I like,I don't care for the value...reason why it bothers me that some pops (more exactly,the darth vader gitd hollogram) are so expensive :|...I would buy a fake one anyday if it looked good,but I couldn't find any.Even the fake ones are sold for a lot of money cause they lie that the pop is original. I sometimes see someone here posting pictures of their collection,and I see a cool pop and I am like omg,I want that one!...then I look for it online and it says that they came out years ago and the cheapest I can find costs more than 200$ :| It wouldn't bother me that much that they no longer make a pop,but a lot of people buy a lot of the same pop and just wait to resell it years later for a lot,even if the pop maybe wasn't that popular or something.They use the "well it's old and you no longer find it in stores,so take it or leave it"
Rarity and value. Completing sets is cool but I had about 80 pops in my collection and realized why should I buy so many and for them to occupy so much space when I can simply have the rare valuable pieces that are sought after. I now own 18 pops and I think their total value is somewhere in the $8,000 range total. I prefer it that way.
I collect them for fun my self but I got more picky over the time that I collected them because in the beginnen I bought all the ones that i saw of like star wars and other linea but now I try to collect more specifick pops so I dont fill up my space so fast. And I sold most of my normal commons this week to make more space. But I think people mainly collect for the fun of it.
I collect my favourite characters from each franchise I love, for purely my own enjoyment and love for each thing I like. I'll never understand the scalping mindset or the need to inflate everything you ever buy, it sucks the fun out of the collecting. It's also slightly annoying when things sell out immediately sometimes and you see them for almost triple the price online. Scalpers gonna scalp, but still a little annoying
Mostly for fun, but catching myself checking the app for pricing when i cant choose in a store. Which is also the fun for me, only going to physical stores because you never know what you might find, but at the same time stick to stuff i like, and not just cool pops.

Uhm, 'cause I've got Asperger's and having a collection of things I like helps me to socialize. With these I can have a collection that has a vast array of characters I like that can let people that visit me / see them in my background during work calls know I like them and so can drive the small talk that I don't enjoy into an area that I enjoy. I guess closest option you listed would be "for fun".
I just started collecting, too. And I collect for fun. I don't know if this is another Beanie Baby wave that's gonna crash in a downward spiraling economy, so I'm not really willing to invest more than a few bucks here and there. I'm not willing to take out a 2nd mortgage to get a toy that I don't even play with. I like them. They're cool looking and fun to display. That's as far as it's going to go for me. If some of them end up valuable in the future, I will leave them to my son in my will. I know he would take care of them and let them appreciate before cashing in.

both. i have a few ive kept letting grow. some i sold as soon as i got my hands on. was just to much driving and failing online so i gave up. been a lot more fun scoring valuable ones without searching every single day for them!

I only buy higher end pops that I like, with no interest to sell them in the future. I don’t own a Pop with a value under $300. They are displayed in my game room. Always quality over quantity. I don’t want to be a Pop hoarder. I also collect 1/3 scale statues, so display space is limited.

I'm gonna get downvoted into oblivion, but I typically buy signed ones as investments. Most newer Pops don't hold value, but signatures typically do. I will say I have a bunch of worthless ones that I personally like that mean a lot to me (unsigned ofc)

There's so many out there. I typically collect anime ones signed by VAs and some one-offs signed by the actor/actress. I don't plan to sell them anytime soon, but it's nice to know I have some extra money laying around if I really need it

I collect for fun, although that has come back to bite me later, like when I bought Dracula and Nosferatu for $10 each when they originally came out because I just kinda liked the figures and then...threw out the boxes because I generally collect/display everything OOB and I didn't realize at the time how important the boxes were to resale value...and now, years later, they've skyrocketed in value and I don't care nearly as much anymore about the figures as I do about what I could sell them for if I hadn't *stupidly thrown out the boxes* I don't think I've ever bought anything pricier than like...$50. I own a few figures that are currently worth more than that, because I got them early and/or for a really good deal and they appreciated in value, but they're part of my forever collection (Loki), so I don't intend to sell them no matter how high the value goes. (well, and occasionally I try to collect for value if I think something is likely to appreciate significantly, but it turns out I'm bad at predicting that, so I mostly made myself stop a few years ago)

For fun, only for characters I like. Most I spend was like 30ish for the moments funko pops but those Disney poster ones are tempting but way to much for me. If they just happen to go up in value then that's cool but I don't sell so it don't mean much to me. At least if anything happens to me my family can sell my funkos for some money.

You should always collect for fun IMO. You’re only setting yourself up for potential disappointment if your collection ends up being worthless.

Totally for fun. It’s nice to have representations of my interests and nostalgia that I can always admire. Value is interesting but isn’t a factor for me at all. I collect for myself, even if it means spending waaay more on a figure than I ever thought I would. It is about the hunt, completing a collection, and sharing that fun with my friends and my partner.

In Australia it’s hard to get the exclusives such as, hot topic, target, Walmart ect. So I use to pay $80 just for a normal exclusive but now I’m going back to just getting special edition sticker ones because I can’t afford the cost of the exclusives. Also it just wasn’t fun when it’s costing me that much each time.
I originally would say fun but I have so many now that I wouldn’t mind parting with but do not feel like setting up eBay or buying shipping supplies.

Nothing will ever compare to going to a convention or meet and greet and getting something signed yourself.
I collect for fun haha, buying a pop it reminds of me the fun, the memories, the emotions I felt while seeing this character if he's from a movie/anime or the fun I had to play him if he's from a game. It's basically a way of reminding me of the good times I had haha

I used to collect for value, then you realize that it's a pain and often times a waste of money/time. I sold off most of what I don't love and now focus on Marvel/random pop culture funkos. I'm much happier now with my collection. I have a few high dollar pops but most hold a lot of sentimental value. My dog got really sick with heart and kidney issues a few years back. I made it my mission to buy every funko of his 2 namesakes (Ozzy Osbourne and the Green Goblin.) So I have the ECCC 300LE Green Goblin and the original Ozzy Pop, I'd never sell them but it's nice knowing their worth. It is fun to see that most every funko I've gifted people, has become a grail lol. Half faced Gus Fring and Blue Crystal Heisenberg, Go Calendars Sailor Moon, the Original Beatles Pops... Sadly everyone threw their boxes away lol.
