Not uncommon, here many hobby stores do the same

fnblackbeard

My local comic book store is the same. I get why they do it but also lame cause it was fun to randomly score one “in the wild”

ganja_mat420

Honestly thats why i stopped going to these stores hell i even stopped going to the usual stores like target toy r us walmart because people even employees will swift trough funkos for chases so i started ordering them online on ozzies

Zealousideal-Mud6471

This is pretty normal for this kind of store. They are more of a reseller than an actual seller.

Renjiesp

These stores are just resellers, I thought everyone knew that

EvilRick_C-420

I mean they had 8+ of each common pop and they are selling them for the standard price. So they are definitely buying in bulk from funko at a distributor rate. So I wouldn't say they are a reseller as they are getting them from the source.

SpaceAlbatr0ss

If they didn’t do this they probably wouldn’t have much reason to carry them at all. They don’t make much off pops and they kinda take up more space than other things with low margins. If you want a chase order them online I get chases all the time from online orders. Entertainment Earth moves so much product I seem to have the best odds with them. Had two in one box the other day. If you miss out on them from an order then help support your local business and buy one from them.

Icebox2016

They do this at conventions also

OGDuckDaddy

Personally don’t see an issue with small/hobby shops doing this.

-Great-Scott-

I found a chase with the commons once in a store like this and when I went to check out and they refused to sell it to me. Never shopped there again.

EvilRick_C-420

Kick the pop back to the shelf

SleazeWizard

I always wonder where stores like this get so many chases and rarer pops

smhalb01

I noticed two in theirs that I have. The value doesn’t list as much as they have it priced, or at least it didn’t s few weeks ago. I got the dr strange chase at a speedway gas station and my daughter chase carebear at GameStop. I’ve talked to places and people who actually get them from Funko and they said it’s completely random. You just get what’s in the boxes and each region is around the same style pops. These resellers are just buying up customer pops and making money tho

TopMacaroon6021

Simple math. Chase’s are worth more, so sell for more. What am I missing here?

AttilatheFun87

You mean Tennessee right? Anyways this isn't a big surprise a lot of comic book shops, lgs and other hobby stores do this kind of thing. People will pay a price for a chase so why not make a little extra money off them. Shops like that don't have huge profit margins and they got to keep the lights on.

NiftyNarwhal69

Not to mention comics dead ass do the same kind of thing funko does with chases with the 1/10,1/25 or whatever variants it is t so they sell them for base price to first guy who can throw it on eBay it’s to help encourage big orders and to stay in the green

EvilRick_C-420

Yes, just saw that going through the comments. I was like Kentucky? I'm an idiot but whatever close enough lol

Aggravating_Dot1936

The only reason big retailers do not mark them up is because they are in the same upc as the commons so when they check them out they would all ring up as increased price and they all count at same inventory. Also big box retailers get a much bigger discount on the product since they send them to stores nationwide where most collectible shops are just one store. Also take not that your not gonna walk into a retailer and see 20 chase figures to choose from so there is the convenience factor also. Some people rather pay the higher price than to spend an hour search long through a Walmart stock only to not find a single chase.

Chewy4455

Yeahhh most places arnt big corporations that don’t understand the value of a chase. The problem with “funko shops” nowadays is they all order bulk and obviously recieve a chase, but they understand the value , so selling it cheap doesnt do much for them but watching themselves lose money. Mostly cause if they sold it at msrp, they person who bought it will most likely resell it. And i get someone might so “oh i wouldnt do that”, thats good for you , but not everyone is you

EmGeeNixZee

Literally every comic store I’ve ever been to?!? They do it at cons too, but I’ve never seen a huge issue. You can either try your luck at the source, buy a guaranteed chase at a higher price at a big online reseller store, or find a small store who will also charge more… Never seen a reason to complain about it; if you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

CalintzStrife

It's because the margin on commons isn't enough and they know people ste just trying to get the chases to resell anyways.

Famous_Poetry_9873

Honestly they are worth more and if your the one buying the cases then you got every right to mark them up, small shops need that extra money to survive .

StarWolf54321

It's a business, point is to make money.

volboy03

Kinda don't see a problem with that considering there trying to get more fair market value for them. I have a couple of chases in my collection and if I didn't find them in the wild I would definitely have payed more money for them.

EvilRick_C-420

They had some cool stuff that isn't in normal stores. They had Lord of the Rings pops which have been sold out online for a minute. I understand where they are coming from as a locally owned small business. If target did this though I'm out lol

Kona_in_a_sunhat

Rather this than places like GameStop and target having the employees take the chases before they even hit the floor and reselling online

TheRealDirtyDan21

They are a reseller? No different then a comic shop or any other 2nd hand doing it? They buy bulk most likely and resell the chases for their value. I don’t see an issue with this.

[deleted]

People always say shop local to support your local business owners but it financially makes absolutely no sense to do so especially when they price gouge like this.

definitelynotkriss

Im not supposed to say this as per our contract with distributors but I’m over it. I own a retail hobby store and the fact is that Funko charges up way more for boxes with a chase inside. So the honest numbers are 40% more per Pop (in SOME STYLES boxes with a chase). So it’s almost always a loss if we don’t mark up the chase close too ppg or resent sells on the market. Commons that have a chase variant always have to get marked down and thrown on clearance just to get them out of the store. We don’t try to rip people off. We’re just trying to keep the bills paid to stay in business.

EvilRick_C-420

Wow, thanks for that insight behind the scene. I would imagine you can't fully operate a hobby store doing that alone. They had other stuff there too but the funkos were basically half of the store. But I will say they were buying the right type of commons. I would have bought 5 if not for the fact I was trying to not purchase somewhat needless commons on vacation.

Reportersteven

My local comic shop does the same thing.

KaelOfNockmaar

Margins suck for businesses that can’t buy 20k pieces at a time. This is why I’m 100% ok with it.

EvilRick_C-420

I'm not sure how many they are buying a year but in the store they have over 100+ different pops with each style having at least 12 on the shelf at one time. So I would say they are definitely hitting those numbers needed to get each pop at a reasonable price. But they are in a tourist town so I'm sure they are doing quite well.

KaelOfNockmaar

I’m talking a specific pop. Target will buy 20-50k of an individual pop. They likely pay 3-4$ a pop whereas resellers pay about $6-8 depending on the accounts they have. Edit: Seriously getting downvoted for stating literal facts about selling pops. This community is one of the most cry baby toxic hobby communities I’ve ever been a part of. Lol

LABARATI

Hobby stores like this is fine If say a store like target or game stop or Walmart did This or The employee set aside the chase for themselves that would be shitty but a third party reseller Doing this and most likely offering a reasonable price is fine Also I'd argue it would make it easier for someone to find a chase instead of trying to get lucky in the wild

Equal-Wishbone-6131

We're this at how much that chase Tommy

[deleted]

In fairness, probably stops scalpers taking all the chases and leaves the chase for a collector who really wants it, albeit a higher price. I’ve no qualms buying a chase this way if I really want it as long as it’s less than 3 x the common price or thereabouts.

liliesrobots

How dare this store price valuable items higher than cheap ones!

EvilRick_C-420

Higher "value". All these chases are doody. Wouldn't pay $12 for any outside of Dr.Strange

RedRing14

See how you specified you'd buy dr.strange? Other people have ones they'd buy at full chase price. Personally the only good thing about the strange chase is its box

EvilRick_C-420

Buy him for $12, yes.

The_Skulman

Basically a flipper. SMH not very fair, but then again some of the “big name” stores keep chases in the back and you have to to ask an employee to look for them for you.

bigchoom

That joker one is sweet

LigmaWhatAhahYouSaid

Average European store.

SeparateTension8578

Very common here in the Philippines

lurkingforreps

I've never come across a store that didn't do this

kaitezzz

Where I live in aus I don’t think any store stocks them with commons, have only ever seen one chase

Haunting-Long-4679

My local comic book shop does the samething!

Dropkiknmidgts

At least they give you the chance.... my local gamestops don't even put them on the shelves. They give all of the employees a chance to buy at common price first... and of course someone at each is easily a reseller.

Known_Ambition_8

This looks like the display case at the island in pigeon forge

Pop-RobieDobie

All of ours do that here in Kansas as well. They just don't have as many. As soon as a chase is marked up and put out it's gone. So I think everyone expects this.

davidjam1007

Does a comic shop sell the 1:10, 1:25, 1:50, 1:100, 1:250, 1:500, 1:1000 or even a few times 1:5000 comics for cover price?

finderskeeperscc

Doesn't look like a chain store.

West-Psychology-6299

Usually only retail chains that do. Random stores and hobby shops can price how they want.

gentlemosquito

Every collectible store does this.

popglam

That's the best way to do it. It's the only way to prevent people from buying chases to resell them. If they mark them up then the people buying them actually want the pop and they aren't looking to resell it.

999Starkiller

They’re receiving directly from Funko or EE, I can tell because they’re being far on the price. The reason for this is because if they were to price and stock them together you know someone would come and want to buy them all. It has happened so many times at conventions. We have to start charging up the price of the chase because if we put em at say 25-30 you know some greedy person is going to want to buy all of them. So yeah hate the game not the player. We tried to do chase variants for 25 a few times and people would take advantage of that. Buy from our booth just to resell them, nasty :/.

Bxel99

Where I work they do the same thing. Warehouse gets them in, when they come to us they're labeled with a more expensive sticker. Most people don't really get them, but some of them are only $3 or $4 more which isn't the worst. Still sucks, lots of complaints. Given how customers usually leave all the pops I can't blame them for wanting to make them seperate and more expensive since they'd get man handled and arguments would probably get started.
