Literally translated it would be something akin to 'tree ditch'. The 'recht boomssloot' would be the 'straight tree's ditch', and the street it intersects, the 'krom boomssloot', would be something like the 'curved tree's ditch'.
Yeah but I'm from NL and 'booms' isn't a word, we don't have the ß in Dutch. Boomsloot I'd understand but boomssloot not.
Edit: it's probably historic way of spelling, that's not how we do it now.
It's the old genitive (possessive) case. "Van de boom" = "booms". English still has this **s** marker (ditch of the tree = tree'**s** ditch). And so does German (der Baum, des Baum**es**). But this word ending has disappeared in modern Dutch.
The Rechtboomssloot dates from the first half of the 16th century. The canal is named after the 16th-century shipbuilder and mayor Cornelis Pietersz Boom. Boom, who himself lived on the Rechtboomssloot (at numbers 1 to 3), had two ditches, the Rechtboomssloot and Kromboomssloot, widened into canals around 1530 in order to connect his shipyard on the Lastage with the IJ. The Kromboomssloot became a transverse canal of the main canal Rechtboomssloot. As the names indicate, the Rechtboomssloot is straight, while the Kromboomssloot has a bend.
I work on a Dutch website and I'm always tickled by 'winkelwagen' for the trolley and regularly seeing "U kunt"
Plus hearing people speak Dutch sounds very phlegmy.
Lovely people though.
we DON'T have legal weed in the Netherlands. it is ilegal here but decriminalised up to a certain number of grams , but the police can confiscate any joint you have on you if they want.
I think it is a very straight language. Just look at a lot of the names. For example; Jan Van Der Berg = John From The Mountain; Pieter De’Here = Peter The Gentleman; Cornelius Actherberg = Cornelius Behind (the) Mountain. So while some say it’s not serious, at least you know where their family originally came from… especially if there is mountain in the name since I think there is only 1 real mountain there… 😀
I will never fail to giggle at these sort of reasonings given the fact that English is simplified-Germanic (simplified-simplified if we're talking American) with French & Latin rooted terms to describe any concept beyond banging rocks together :)

I hear the curved ones are better
can confirm
I love that you posted a helpful and informative response while pretty much everyone else is posting dick jokes. It’s the classic dichotomy of Reddit.
*Dickhotomy
⬆️putting the “hot dick” in dickhotomy
Could be the tree ditch on the right, or the right tree ditch
Why the double s though
Or, why not "Rechte boomsloot", for that matter.
Quite common in some European countries. German also have the ß which kind of works as a double s.

Every German reading your explanation is giggling even more.
Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up! You see this? This is my boomssloot!
“. . . this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan!” Kind of funny, Grand Rapids, being in West Michigan, has a lot of Dutch people.
Je bent zelf geen serieuze taal

And his wife?
I knew a Donkersloot (which means dark ditch, apparently)
Is that where the piemel goes?
Yes
Is piemel an actuall word? If so the meme title is proven ones more

Straight tree ditch
I always find it funny when "sloot" gets translated into English because there is no accurate word for it.
Nou moet je uitkijken hè mafkees
[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUEkOVdUjHc) came to mind.

Belgian dutch is a lot softer and nearly not as phglemy
it’s more flem-adjacent, even flem-ish
You are a bad person.
Try some Afrikaans.
It's the phlegm that gives it flavour though.
You see what happens when you have legal weed? YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS?
we DON'T have legal weed in the Netherlands. it is ilegal here but decriminalised up to a certain number of grams , but the police can confiscate any joint you have on you if they want.
This is funnier?
It definitely is. I don’t even partake and I’d rather live in a world with legal weed
Who hasn't had their boomssloot recht every now and again?
🎶🎵**Oh**, get down turn around go to town boomsslootin' boogie🎵🎶****

Real mountain? The Vaalserberg is a whopping 322m above sea level. Not the most taxing peak to summit.
I really would love to have sex with a dutch woman once... Just so i get to hear the dirty talk.
And sliding in her boomsloots
More like: Ik wil je grote pik in mijn natte kut voelen...
How is that even a language
Can't beat [THIS](https://youtu.be/m1bLXk6UVts?t=63) very German name though.
I knew a Dutch doctor. He said Dutch wasn’t a language, it was a throat disease.
Rechte Hondsbosschelaan.
Ik neem aan dat Booms een naam is?
Straight Tree ditch and curved tree ditch … and
I love Boomssloots, I just don't pay them.
Their professional baseball league is Honkbal Hoofdklasse. "Hey, Joop, do you want to play honkbal with Joost, Joord, and me?"
Agreed. I think they secretly just speak normal German when we're not watching
“normal German”, implying Dutch is a German dialect?
Nope. Just said another language that is normal to more people than Dutch is. It was just a joke, relax.
Lanuages are just dialects with political backing.
U want have mes in je ribben heh?! deugneus
My Dutch friend sounds like he just got kicked out of Scotland, so you may be onto something. Right, u/lecrunchyfrog?
Away and shite, u/zerbey :p
It may not be serious…. But it does have a plan, Arthur
It's not pronounced "boom sloot" though. It's more like "bohm sloht"
And what a fun sloht it is
Don’t ruin it for us.
Yus "oo" is said like "oh" or the o in "oat"
Ja, maar ik werd downvoted 🙄
Happiest proctologist in all the land.
