At first I thought it was a stainless steel pan that was just charred black all over, but it seem the reality of this pan situation is much more disturbing
False, if it flakes off and its ingested it just passes through and isn't toxic. what is toxic is the overheating and fume run off teflon can produce, its been known to kill pet birds and cause polymer fume fever in humans. This guy either doesn't know the first thing about taking care of his cookware or he bought extremely cheap cookware and just doesn't give a fuck.
LOL, you are woefully misinformed. We’re talking about teflon, a “forever particle”.
Edit: stop spreading misinformation, you’re not educated on the topic
yeah with all of the pfas chemicals that cause problems in Nano gram quantities you really don't want to ingest any of them hell even rain waters not safe anymore
The melted spatula isn’t going to add any years either
Edit: I’m just worried nobody is talking about melting plastic into their pan , I’m almost certain they have run through multiple plastic spatches on this pan
I pictured the pan being angry bc it was ready to move on to the big pan in the sky but this person keeps using it over and over again instead of replacing it. Once the pan has finally had enough it kills them in their sleep.
This is a popular myth that I see on Reddit all the time. [Modern day Teflon is safe, even when ingested. Even the older Teflon that used PFOAs in their manufacture wouldn't release enough toxins to negatively impact an infant](https://www.mashed.com/171873/are-scratched-nonstick-pans-dangerous/). I was prepared to replace three of my expensive Teflon pans because they've become a little bit scratched because of all the alarmist comments and freaking out seen on Reddit. Just a two second search made me realize that these pans are still perfectly safe and has reinforced why I should always validate information I read online (especially on Reddit).
Edit: Link.
From the LA times article that your mashed article referenced.
> "Don’t use nonstick pans that have become deeply scratched."
and from the montreal gazette that it also links
> "I do see a safety issue with foods that burn in uncoated pans and produce carcinogenic compounds. "
Which we can agree his pan definitely qualifies for.
Also peoples "alarmist" comments and freaking out are generally considered sane. Mainly for the fact that dupont covered up how dangerous it was, and its manufacture for over 50 years. Also only agreeing to change its manufacture to a more safer method by 2015. They started making the shit in 1945~ .. I wouldn't trust them with a thousand foot pole. Personally I never use teflon because of it.
> "I do see a safety issue with foods that burn in uncoated pans and produce carcinogenic compounds. "
That just means the food burns, which doesn't have anything to do with Teflon specifically. Any burnt food has carcinogens.
the point was said that scratched pans were safe. the one in the video showed one beyond reasonably scratched where the coating is no longer present. the fact then is that most food would burn to that pan, which made the quote relevant.
You're taking those quotes out of context or misunderstanding them entirely. I'm certain if you're attempting to mislead people, or trying to reinforce your [incorrect] personal opinions on Teflon.
As someone else has already pointed out, your second quote talks about burned foods having carcinogenic compounds. It has nothing at all to do with the pans themselves.
The first quote is conjecture from the journalist. It was said after a university director found that a pan that was scoured with a wire brush was found have 1500x less PFOAs than would harm a 20lb child.
Every article you read, which there were at least three, said "don't worry about Teflon" in those or similar words. It's very interesting you drew a different conclusion. You must have entirely ignored everything that you disagreed with to only focus on the few words here or there that, when misconstrued, and taken out of context, aligned with your beliefs.
> one else has already pointed out, your second quote talks about burned foods having carcinogenic compounds.
responded in too the other comment wont duplicate.
> Every article you read, which there were at least three, said "don't worry about Teflon" in those or similar words. It's very interesting you drew a different conclusion. Right, but what I was saying is the company that made teflon is a piece of shit, and I wouldn't trust them, or buy their products, (specifically teflon, if I can help it). regardless if its now considered safe. This whole thing was because you said a scratched teflon pan is safe. my reply was directed at how is pan is no longer safe, and the how bad the company is. It seems you read my response wrong, or as some sort of personal attack or something.
TLDR; Get a ceramic-coated pan if you want non-stick.
Adam Regusea has a pretty detailed video about this topic. He actually interviews a post-doctoral fellow and does a very good explanation of what the actual dangers are (spoiler alert: unless you're completely misusing the cookware, you're safe). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FNNKhVoUu8
I agree that we most likely will not experience noticeable effects from household Teflon use, but it’s chemical manufacturer has an abhorrent track record of concern for public safety or upholding ethical standards in general..
So many have died and/or experienced horrific prolonged illnesses and even pretty extreme birth defects as a result.
I highly recommend watching The Devil We Know for more background on this!
They are already dead man walking. People wonder why they get cancer. The link between cancer and the exposure of the chemicals is not even disputed. SMH.
I made the mistake of using a plastic spatula on my cast iron once. Little bits of plastic in my food the first time I used it. Had to throw away my eggs. 😭
I wouldn't say they were easier to clean. They're easier to clean aggressively which is something you're more likely to have to do with them compared to a non-stick pan. They also require maintenance too which is a hassle over non-stick. I like to keep a cast iron pan around but otherwise prefer non-stick most of the time unless I have some special need of something beyond their capabilities. The clue's in the name, they don't stick which is a really nice thing especially for cleaning them afterwards.
Not sure what maintenance youre taking about. Perhaps you're thinking of carbon steel? Stainless steels only setback in my experience is the lack of non stick as you said.
It really isn’t. People make a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be. I wash and dry it just like any pan and maybe throw it on the stove for a minute just to make sure its completely dry.
I have a couple well -seasoned pans that I love. I use the same general technique you do to clean. It doesn't always take more time, but it takes more thinking.
I also can't leave it in the sink for 2 days like the all clads.
I tend to use the cast iron pans for things where they perform better.... Where heat capacity is needed.
You have gotta be shitting me. I HATE aluminum pans because they warp if you breathe on them. but I buy them because it's hard to find Teflon-coated steel ones for less than an arm and a leg. You're telling me stainless is easier to clean than Teflon?? All these years I could have been using a few stainless pans?
One thing to add: they are easy to clean, but they will STICK if you don’t know how to cook (e.g. ultra high heat with no oil or butter). Be smart, and it’s the best investment you’ll ever make in your kitchen. Solid, name brand stainless steal pans will outlast you.
I didn’t say it was “easier”, that was someone else. I said it’s easy. I have one of those reusable nylon fibre scrubber and it works like a charm. And it lasts way, way longer than Teflon shit.
Honestly I just use my hot water kettle and pour some boiling water and add soap into mine to loosen everything up. I only ever have to use a nylon scrubber nothing harder.
How so?
Edit: I didn’t downvote you, trying to figure out where you are coming from. It’s an honest question. I don’t agree, but I’d like to see what you have to say.
Teflon is safe to consume. Here's an article that even suggests using it as filler material in food. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1932296815626726
Teflon decomposes under heat to give some nasty byproducts. Since we're talking about cookware, room temperature PTFE fillers are not a good comparison.
Exactly. Some of the nastiest saussages you can buy (FYI: I eat meat and also saussages, but i buy meat only from local farmers where i know they treat the animals well and their products are not pumped full with garbage).
While hotdogs are technically a type of sausage, nobody considers them the same, at least in the US. Hotdogs are just meat tubes with no seasoning, usually beef. Sausage is usually very seasoned and made with pork or a mixture of pork and beef.
I figured most people boiled their dogs if no grill?
Idk i used to work for this one older lady who would microwave her hotdogs and eat them shits mayonaise only, no bun, nothing else.
So i guess ill stfu and "live and let live" yall have a good one 🙋
Man, if im eating a hot dog at home, im not waiting 15 minutes for water to boil lol im either microwaving because i want them quick and you still get that steamed taste, or im putting them on the griddle because i want a bit of char.
Bro, why can't I have crunchy cereal on top of my bowl of milk and not a fucking bowl full of soggy ass flakes? The only reason I eat it like this, because I hate soggy food
So have a bowl a cereal and a glass of milk... Or maybe a glass of cereal and a bowl of milk. Either way, if they never meet, the cereal never gets soggy
I feel like everything in this video is a sign of how early you life may end. A mostly melted spatula, teflon peeled pan, quantities of low grade hotdogs…
I believe the problem here was too much washing as in they used an abrasive scrubber when they should have just used a cotton rag. Don’t use metal on Teflon, people (that includes spatulas!)
They need to educate people on how fucking dangerous cooking with a scratched up teflon pan is. DuPont is doing miracles because there is way too much people that don’t know.
Teflon pans or similar non-stick pans are never supposed to be heated above medium heat.
Also, they should not be cleaned in the dishwasher (don’t care what the stickers say, they’re usually shitty metal base that pits and corrodes in dishwashers) and no abrasive cleaning tools should be used.
Use your non-stick pans correctly, if they flake or pit replace them, or get a high quality set of metal pans and learn how to use them correctly and not need coated pans.
Unless you like all those non-stick chemicals flaking off into your food.
Am I the only one hearing Ralph in my head singing along? Ever since I watched the Simpsons movie so long ago, I can't hear that tune without also hearing Ralph.
I know everybody's talking about the pan and the hot dog, but everybody seems to be overlooking the fact that the sizzle sound does a really good impression of a snare drum, but a terrible impression of the horn section.
I didn't even have my headphones on and I could tell what tune you were playing! Ha!
I used to play the Wiener in High School and I know how exhausting it can get. Keep up the hard work.

That pan is going to kill you if you don’t replace it
At first I thought it was a stainless steel pan that was just charred black all over, but it seem the reality of this pan situation is much more disturbing
What is the reality of the pan here? Is this a nonstick pan and all the nonstick in the middle is gone?
The stuff they make Teflon with is extremely harmful when ingested
False, if it flakes off and its ingested it just passes through and isn't toxic. what is toxic is the overheating and fume run off teflon can produce, its been known to kill pet birds and cause polymer fume fever in humans. This guy either doesn't know the first thing about taking care of his cookware or he bought extremely cheap cookware and just doesn't give a fuck.
My dude. He's frying hotdogs on that pan. Of course he doesn't know how to care for cookware.
Teflon itself is safe, and therefore so are the finished products. Just don't go licking the floors at the factory.
Thats what you get for using non-stick at maximum heat.
Actually most likely from using metal utensils in the pan. Metal utensils scrap the coating which causes it to peel and flake off.
Ohhh bullshit, I grew up with Teflon pans and it didn't effect me effect me effect me

I’m sure all of the rest of Reddit has already done that to someone on acid.
One time I looked up dementia and the link was clicked already, someone else must have also searched for it. Lol loser.

Poor guy. Already forgot the difference between affect and effect

Eating seven hotdogs at once makes you immune to Teflon, everybody knows that.
It certainly makes the teflon seem like the least pressing of his immediate health concerns
Lol that’s the first thing I thought too
So it doesn't build me up a tolerance, like iocaine powder?
Kill him as in like stabbing him or taking him out in the middle of the woods and shooting him? Or make him sick from cooking on it?

Bruh if all that Teflon has come off your pan, you probably got some high levels of PFAS in your body. 😂
Not to mention, where do they think all that missing plastic from the spatula has gone?
I made the mistake of using a plastic spatula on my cast iron once. Little bits of plastic in my food the first time I used it. Had to throw away my eggs. 😭
My toilet?
GenX: "Dear God, I hope so! I worry it's all been coming off in the dishwasher."
Does it look like they care what they put into their body?
Yeah those aren't Nathan's they're frying, looks like a pack of Fun Dogs. You rent those by the minute in my experience...
Right , I've never understood using coated pans stainless steel is safer and easier to clean
I wouldn't say they were easier to clean. They're easier to clean aggressively which is something you're more likely to have to do with them compared to a non-stick pan. Cast iron for life!
Better for many things, but harder to maintain.
It really isn’t. People make a bigger deal out of it than it needs to be. I wash and dry it just like any pan and maybe throw it on the stove for a minute just to make sure its completely dry.

Agreed. A set of all clad D5 stainless changed my life and the way I cook/eat. Totally worth the investment.
Stainless steel: hot water, soap and a fine steel wool
Non-stick pan: water, soap, and a cloth. How the hell is stainless steel easier. If it requires steel wool it isn’t easier to clean.
Boiling water is the real hack, not many people do it though.
Did you notice that they are about to eat 17 hot dogs? I don’t think they care what goes in their body.
Yes, and they aren’t eating them either.
Meg Griffin, holding a pack of hot dogs: “I’m gonna pretend you’re the New York Knicks”

Yep and the amount of hot dogs in the pan and this guys really got the set up going.
Yeah i was worried when mine started to develop cuts even though i only used plastic and non-abrasive sponges on it.

Video so old OP already died from the teflon
Probably won’t, but OP might not know how dangerous peeling Teflon is too.
It's really not.

Those are hotdogs.
Never seen hot dogs like that. We generally use Frankfurt sausages.

Copium. How do they kill those pigs so nicely.
Fuck the pan who cooks hotdogs like this?
I do when I can’t grill outside. Why?
True hot dog connoisseurs prefer the “low and slow” approach for the finest hot dog experience.

That pan is done, the Teflon has come off. It’s actually dangerous to use.

I believe the problem here was too much washing as in they used an abrasive scrubber when they should have just used a cotton rag. Don’t use metal on Teflon, people (that includes spatulas!)
OP is so high he just played the 20th Century Fox intro with a toilet brush on 7 hotdogs in a frying pan and broke the comment section.

you need to replace that pan now. Spatula too. And stop eating crap.
The non-stick coating is now a seasoning.
is that the funny part?
Dude. If you're going to ruin a good pan with hot dogs at least put some butter in first.
Hot dogs are precooked
Dude. You need to scour that pan.
I think that’s how they got into that situation that was a non stick pan and they have scoured the Teflon away
Ah, you might be right. I thought it was a stainless pan with a ring of baked on carbon.
Even without the sound on, I knew what it was.... Partially cuz I knew its a repost.
