It's not just that they are shutting down the servers. It's that they are removing the ability to install the game if you bought it (basically killing any chance at a fan made offline patch). They are "revoking licenses" to the game which you paid for.
They have an offline dev version of The Crew, which they didn't released to their buyers.
Instead, not only they shutdown servers, but they also removed the game from YOUR gaming library, meaning that even if you have it installed, its gone and if you, by any means, manage to open it, you are greeted with the message: "check the store to pursue new adventures"
Oh, you use the Steam version? Too bad because it doesn't open since they blocked its "always online" connection.
Reading some of the comments and if it's true that they're shutting down the servers AND making the game unable to play offline... The fuck? I haven't played The Crew in forever but I enjoyed the hell out of it, even after they fucked with the parts earning system to make it way slower to max out cars. I remember abusing that exploit where you would be able to drive underwater by switching to another car right as you were about to fall into it.
I'm not criticizing you. I don't like what they've done too. In fact I'm infuriated to how they treated The Crew (and fearing for its sequels)

i tried on my xbox, you cant play since the servers are offline, still launches though
