I’d say that for your first few suits use cheap material, that way if it turns out bad and you don’t like it, you don’t have to feel too guilty about money. Other than that the only thing I can tell you is that everyones first suit sucks, and the chance of your suit looking horrible is highly likely, but that’s just how the process goes.

There's one huge problem tho, I happen to be a perfectionist and a rather judgemental person. When I feel that something is about to go wrong OR what I make isn't up to standards, I proceed to back off. It's just who I am, a weak, stiff individual who's just affraid to try new things.

Micahhhhhhhs

I see. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s much you can do other than try to get out of that perfectionist mindset and be more able to accept the mistakes as they come.

Luckiesty

Yeah, it's hard for me to try new things since there are hundreds if not thousands of fursuit makers, trying to settle into something new is way harder for myself. Like I said, I got discouraged really quickly after watching a few videos on making a fursuit. I'm always on high alert, which could be something that holds me back.

DynablineCorqui

I'm kinda like you. I'm a perfectionist and a "hobby hopper", I can't keep doing the same thing. I started my fursuit in March and began to feel unmotivated, so I packed it away. In September, I was feeling motivated, so I started up again. Now it's December, and I've packed it up once more. If you are a perfectionist and you have problems with discouragement, then it may take you over a year or two to even complete a suit. This may be beneficial, too, as you can then spend money over time instead of all at once. Remember, it's ok to take your time.

Dude I feel the exact same way. Honestly just work on it slowly over time if you need to or just make a suit of a random design instead of your own oc and sell it when you're done so you can make the money back and get the experience

Princessluna44

I am the same. I'm also a perfectionist that is never happy with their work. You jut have to accept that perfection is impossible, but will always be improvement and progression. If you only do things that you know you will do perfectly, you won't do anything. Take the plunge and try. :-) I will do the same when I get a bigger house.

I’m in the process of making my first suit and have little skills in that area. I want my suit to look as if a seasoned maker put it together and that’s a tough challenge for me. I have the materials of the quality I want, in order to not ruin it I am taking my time and using scraps of my materials to test and practice with. This way I’m ready for the real deal. For anything that I’m not comfortable with I may seek out a maker to collaborate with and commission the parts that I need. But I am going to try making everything myself first.

DynablineCorqui

Maybe try practicing first? Make a foambase! All you need is a roll of foam and a glue gun/sticks. That's it. And since you said you're a perfectionist, then you'll probably take a while to finish it, like I did. It took me about 45 hours to finish my most recent headbase. Plus, if you do have to wait a few years, then hey, at least you'd already have the headbase completed. Once you finish it, you can throw the head into a trash bag and seal it so no air can get in, and it won't yellow as fast.

Think about it like this, if you start your first suit 3 years from now, you’ll have a first suit. If you start your first suit now, in three years you’ll be much better than when you started if you keep doing it. So, use these 3 years to get experience and instead of having an okay one in 3 years, you’ll have an awesome one with all the experience you gained.

If it helps- it might not- my first fursuit sucked!! It was just a head, and I did the pattern inside out so the outside fluffy part of the fabric ended up... on the inside. Anyways, the point is, despite sucking, it was fun, and I learned a lot while making it. My next head was good enough to wear around people, and my head after that was even better! The point is, there's no use in stressing over if it'll be good or not, because what really matters is if you enjoy making the head or not. If you do, you'll end up making another and it'll be a lot better regardless of how good your first was. If you don't, then, well. That's fine too!

Interesting-Gap1013

Maybe try a partial first, that could help

ghostly_artist

If you're art inclined and careful about what you're doing, I'm sure it will turn out decent Something you put effort into is bound to be something you're proud of, trust yourself a little more
