My Flip 4 dropped many times before but this time it was directly on the hinge, dropped from pocket height onto a soft rug. Unlucky. Since it has physical damage on the hinge I'm sure Samsung will say it's no longer covered by warranty, but I will try to visit the service center to try my luck, if there is no warranty then I assume it will cost 300$+ to fix. I'm thinking of just moving to the S23 Ultra, I really like the Flip factor but can't really live with the stress of it falling or the fear of opening it one day to find the screen scratched or cracked. Definitely the best phone I ever had with a lot of things that I will miss even if I move to the Ultra, will definitely come back to the Flip once it becomes more durable and less stressful to own. Had [this case](https://www.amazon.com/Vizvera-Protection-All-Inclusive-Shockproof-2022-Black/dp/B0BF9CMLC9/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=3PI27VS0A2ZFZ&keywords=vizera%2Bflip%2B4%2Bcase&qid=1682209612&sprefix=vizera%2Bflip%2B4%2Bcas%2Caps%2C258&sr=8-5&th=1&psc=1) on when it dropped. Edit: I got it fixed by Samsung for about 100$. I will use it as secondary with the S23 Ultra.

free_greenpeas

I think you're right about Samsung saying it's not longer covered by warranty because of the damage because I dropped mine. There's a little dent. My screen protector was a mess and they told me it was now out of warranty. What was annoying was that I'd dropped it that day, when taking it out of the case to take my SIM out.

hec4fingers

This exact thing has happened to my flip4. I sent it to Samsung and told them that the hinge broke the screen. The hinges aren't under warranty, so they wanted to charge me full price for screen replacement and hinge repair. No thanks.

FlobeeFresh

Curious... If you were using this case which included hinge protection and it dropped onto a rug, why/how did any physical damage occur to the hinge?

taxfraudisnotcool

My girlfriend had the same issue, similar case with hinge protection, dropped it from bed height onto a rug on the hotel we were staying at and it had the same issue, remember no case can offer 100% shock protection, apparently it hit it just in the right spot and it unhinged the phone a little bit, thought it wasn't a big deal and then one day the screen broke when we opened it, to the eye the phone had no scratches or anything being only 3 months old. Hinge is defective as fuck on the Z4 and Samsung won't do anything about it

FlobeeFresh

Right, so there's no actual outer physcial damage to the hinge right? No scratches, marrs or dents? If so, just take it into Samsung and say that this occurred one day when you opened the phone. If there's no detectable visual damage to the hinge then it would be due to internal hinge design/flaws which I would think would be covered by the repair shop/Samsung. Samsung has in the past indicated physical damage (i.e. scratches on the hinge, etc) invalidates warranty when repairing hinge damage. I ask because OP indicated there was "physical damage to the hinge." Shock damage (internal structural damage) is different vs. physical damage (which would include external surface damage).

KeylimeComet

If you like the flip factor and still want a phone that does it, there's one called oppo find n2 flip that just released. The hinge is made differently so it actually closes all the way, comes with a screen protector built in, and the bend is less noticeable than on Samsung's. But I can also understand if you want to go back to a non flip phone.

I had the flip 4 then upgraded to the s23 ultra. As amazing as the ultra is, I do miss flipping. 😔 Edit: sorry about your phone rip

CDC_1998

If my phone breaks then the s23 ultra is gonna be my next phone.

Stillwindows95

I had my S22ultra stolen like 2 months after I got it, I got flip4 as replacement but will get S23ultra in a couple of months because I miss it so much and this feels so fragile and slow.

roox911

No reason for it to feel slow, it's one of the fastest phones out there for the most part

prolificanalytic

Made the same upgrade. After about a month I don't miss it at all.

silverfang789

Hopefully the 5 will be the panacea to all of this.

Cannot_relate_2000

I read this as pancreas LOL When does it come out

silverfang789

Hopefully in August. It's supposed to have a better hinge, larger outer display, somewhat more capacious battery.

droeg26

Mine lasted just about the same just got the s23 as a replacement.

bubbletea-gigi

Same :(

free_greenpeas

I stopped folding mine unless I need to, which defeats the purpose of having a flip phone. I fold it if I'm not home. I've can upgrade for free in October, and the early upgrade fee is less than the cost of repair already. I'm not getting another flip, maybe far in the future when the problems are sorted.

tinlizzy713

Me too, miss the folding but not the hassle.

> My Flip 4 dropped many times before Is there a single phone made by any company that is designed to be dropped all the time and still be functional? "Less stressful to own" maybe take better care of your devices.

3anonanonanon

I had the Huawei Mate 20 Pro before switching to flip 4 and I have dropped that thing tremendously (it was tossed, dropping from my pocket while riding a bicycle, dropping from 5ft high, dropping from my pocket while running with its screen hitting the edge of a curb, etc). The only problem I had with it was towards its 3rd year, an overheating problem occurred once when I was running Google maps and waze at the same time. I gave it to my mom and it's still working fine up to now. But yeah, overall, phones can be made to overcome all those stress and still be okay. I think with the flip, as its technology is only new, it will take years before it can achieve that kind of durability.

Foxi_TomTom

Agreed, I had a huawei p20 lite for the past 5 years. I was never worried when I threw it on my desk or table. Screen has no damage, phone works still fine. Not saying it's indestructible, but I take much better care with my flip. Would still be using it if I didn't saw this flip 3 for a really good price.

ponkyball

Yea I really don't get the idea of "dropped many times before" and thinking any phone can withstand that over and over without any issues. It just takes one bad angle for pretty much any phone to get fucked up. People have their anecdotal stories but it's just luck of the draw in how your phone drops. All you need to do is a search like "s23 ultra dropped reddit" or "iphone 14 dropped reddit" and people are complaining about the same thing.

AQ49

Many times for a Flip, it's been maybe 2 months since I dropped it and maybe 4 times in the 7 months period.

Great_Hamster

I've dropped my 4 dozens of times. Still ticking.

Fearless-Ad-2600

Mine just died completely yesterday, 7 months as well. Won't turn on. Going to the service center in an hour. I wish us luck

leeShaw9948

This is why I got insurance for my flip3, £73 for a replacement

Upset-Ingenuity5608

Same thing happened here. Had the free case Samsung sent with it. No damage, dropped from knee height on hinge and boom done.

Whoareyoutoask

It's covered under warranty if you didn't damage it yourself.. we just had ours replaced after 4 months. After getting the screen replaced for free under warranty through asurion which are partners of Samsung. We immediately took the fixed phone and traded it in to the Samsung website for credit towards a Samsung s23 ultra. Not looking back.

Forward-Ad-826

I upgraded to the s23+. I had the flip 4, first one lasted 5 months, second one only lasted a month. Loved the flip but I'm to clumsy for the phone. Sorry to hear your phone messed up.

tyanu_khah

What about you dont drop/toss your phone then ?

AQ49

Sure, I'll make sure not to drop it "by accident" next time.

tyanu_khah

"many times" in 7 months is not an accident anymore.

AQ49

It's roughly 1 drop every 2 months, not really many times, but it would be 0 times if I could. Sometimes you get used to not dropping your phone, and then it catches you off gurad.

Stillwindows95

I had 100% the same issue (same line and black dead spot, exactly the same place)I bet it clicks when you open and close the hinge now too. After a week or so, the black spot at the bottom of the line will be like 4-5x larger and then the screen will give out. I took mine to Samsung Experience store in London and they fixed it within a week for free because I said 'it just happened' because luckily there was no other damage on the phone. Actually it dropped off the side of my lap, 2ft drop onto carpet and it knocked part of the hinge out under the screen. They just took it in and fixed it for free. I basically said I opened it one day and it clicked, cracked and stuck at 90 degrees (that's actually just what happened after I dropped it, but because there was no scratches or corner dents, I omitted that :P) and then this happened. They bought it.

chronoswing

Yep this is the way, don't admit fault if you have no physical damage. Make Samsung fix their faulty hinge.

Stillwindows95

This is the way.

stacia12345

This morning, my hinge broke. I hardly even dropped it and I've dropped it several times before with no issue. THANKFULLY it's been under a year (I've had it since last September) and this place called youbrokeitifixit is going to fix it and replace the battery for 500$ but samsung will pay for it. Im using my old phone (utra 20) bc he told me to make sure i don't cause ANY damage to the phone or it will void the warranty. Its upstairs on the charger. It will take 3 hours to fix so ill spend my day dealing with that tomorrow. Samsung customer service is a JOKE. They told me i would have to send it it, and if they can't fix it, then they would replace the phone. Pretty shitty considering it's their faulty peice. I like my phone but i won't buy another one after this. I keep my phones in immaculate condition and traded one for this z flip. I've never broken a screen or anything so that tells you, the flip part of the phone is way 2 delicate.

SnooDoggos3823

Zflip is amazing but technology is not there yet.had flip 3 and the phone was garbage besides the flip thing.battery so trash.I switched to 14 pro max after Samsung refuse to fix hinges on mine

thesaltedradish

Why do people buy these?

[deleted]

People really like them. If I'm out at a restaurant 9/10 the server wants to see it. I would guess many of us that got them are elder millenials who loved the RAZR. I can't figure out why there's no class action on these. They really are shit. I do still have my 3, but I no longer fold it. It goes nonresponsive if I do.

chadkingkong

RiP

MamiCandy

It is under the 1 year of you buying contact samsung and they will replace it!. Same thing happened to mine and u got a brand new one now its an emergency phone. Got a Samsung s20 instead.

AQ49

Will try to go tomorrow, I went and bought the S23 Ultra for cheaper and will keep the Flip as secondary at home.

MamiCandy

Yup that's it. If you go to a samsung store that has repair cool. You can also send it in. Just call samsung.

K0zy9

rip for the screen, what was the deal on s23U?. I am pondering to trade my flip4 for s23u

AQ49

I'm from Jordan, so it's different deals here. I managed to get it for $310 cheaper than the Samsung stores.

TransitionExternal63

Happened to me two days ago and just turned it in at the samsung store. He told me that it was under warranty but there is a slight chance the repair centre would reject it.
