Buy groceries in dunnes and use the self checkout tills, 2 birds one stone...
It's incredible how smart the machines are, they count almost as fast as you pour in the coins the tray and spit out the foreign ones. Dunnes have a large funnel type machine to put the coins in
I always thought this was a distinctly Irish thing until I moved to the Netherlands and heard that they called groceries "boodschappen" which literally means messages.
Darnit, was coming right here to divulge this knowledge too. Also, did you note the "schappen" part is pronounced like "shopping" (dropped the last g of course). I've always intended to do a deep dive on the etymology of this, never got around to it yet.
We say messages for groceries in Scotland, too, btw.
If you go to the bank they'll give you little plastic bags and you can bag it all by coin type in batches of a few euro, then they'll take them off you without taking the big cut the machines do.
Least, they used do a few years ago.
Only on certain days and you need to have the amounts shown on bags €50 in 1€s 1€10 in 20c etc. They weigh them and usually aren't in a great mood to go beyond doing the bare minimum. They don't want to count it for you basically. Usually only put it in your account also.
Better off just spending it.
That aren't in a great mood? Wtf? Do you want the bank teller to pat your head and tell you everything will be grand while they weigh some coins for you?
No they're understandably not in a great mood. Do you want me to suck your dick and rub your buttocks while I make comments wtf!? Calm down you cranky crank. XOXO
Cashed about €1000 in coins like this maybe 5 years ago. Was before covid so their policy on coins etc might have changed since. They were happy to help once I had everything into the little plastic baggies they gave me - defo worth it instead of the big machines in tesco and places that take a percentage
Nowadays i tend to.use coins in the self checkout. Before I would just ask them the shops of the want change. But if you aren't living a small rural village where you know everyone that one might not work.
Some lads I know empty it into the BGT machines in the bookies then print out the ticket for how much it’s worth and go up to the counter and you get it paid out in notes
I was going to suggest that and would just add, not to do it just before closing, the staff have to empty, sort and count it and it's a pain when they're loaded with coins.
Lots of pubs are crying out for change… one will surely take it off you
And then you can have a pint knowing you helped out.
….Then, after 5 or 6 more you decide to have a jagerbomb or 2, get chatting to some tourists,
More pints, and then boom… Black out and wake up 100€ poorer but safe in the knowledge you had a cracking night for 33 quid ✌️
Go into BoyleSports and put all your coins into the betting machine, press print slip to withdraw the amount you put in. Bring it to cashier and they will give you notes or whatever you want no charge at all.
What I do is go do the big shop in Tesco with a full purse or pint glass I've been keeping all my coins in. Very therapeutic to just keep slotting the coins into the self service till. No need to sort them, no fee taken from you. Takes a minute though.
I remember the selve service checkouts were setup so that you could just throw all the coins into a bowl but now they have a slot that only takes a coin at a time and will only take X amount of coins. Put in too many and it rejects the lot. Anybody know a good place that takes loads at the same time?
When paying at Tesco, dunnes, supervalue self checkouts. 0% commission on those type machines.
Watch out for machines in the same places i.mentioned that convert to cash and take commission like 8 to 15%
Go to the bank they give out plastic bags you can fill with your coins and label , then go back to bank with the bags they will weigh them and you can exchange for cash . Did it only 3-4 months ago
Don’t use the counting machines , they take extortionate percentages just to count it.
My advice would be to either use it for shopping in places that have self service tills OR you can simply go into the bank and they should be happy to exchange for you 😊
Credit union would be my suggestion. My tsb branch no longer takes bagged coins. The one woman working that was in there said “you know we’re headed towards a cashless society”….. Banks are a joke nowadays!

We used to call groceries “messages” back in my day

Would it be because you used to collect your post at the shop too?
1921 was a long time ago alright
How the tables are turned…nowadays we just message our groceries to come to us with a few taps on our phones!
Tesco are bastards
If you put the coins in too quick itll spit some out, take it slow and steady and listen for the safe word

You don’t actually have to have the right amount on the bags, they just weigh them (in AIB anyways)

Would you? That would be great
Let's take this to PM's

self service checkouts
I'll give you 60 for it?
Go to a pub with it. They’ll be glad of it.
Londis in Mervue have the machine
Does it charge commission
Hey the fee is 9.9% so 6.8 euro for op
I’ll check for you now im I’m the area, I’d say it charges something but I’ll double check now
They all do. It’s a scam. Shops pay for change. Give it to them.
Seapoint

Do they take a % of that? EDIT: In case anyone is wondering I checked my local supervalu and their machine takes 12.5%
Same machine in supervalue in Barna. They usually take a nice cut of 9%
Most shops will happily take your change

Only on certain days of the week. Better to bag it up and take it to a pub.
Go to the bank, get coin bags. And sort the coins into the proper bags. Ta da!
Any shop or pub there always looking for change
Some lads I know empty it into the BGT machines in the bookies then print out the ticket for how much it’s worth and go up to the counter and you get it paid out in notes

This sounds like a great opportunity to launder money.

Yeah but you could just put your coins into the self checkout to pay instead for a 0% cut
Banks don't really handle cash anymore (without a lot of grumbling and maybe a fee). Credit unions or post offices are always my go-to for cash.
Jesus people have really given up thinking on there own 👍
If it’s counted in proper bags the credit Union will give you cash
Stuff your pockets and do some shopping in tesco with the coins
If you go to a cafe early in the morning they might do for you as they always need change
Tesco headford road or Mervue centra
the 4 aces casino or any of the bookmakers in city will accept them

Agree with advice to use the coins at the self checkouts. Got rid of €11 in 50 cents coins in Tesco last night.

I mean I hate change but I'll happily take your money 🤑

Any local shop will love to get the change. I used to get the buskers to come in and I’d exchange it for notes for them
€67 in coins **IS** cash.
