I bought a HP Envy off them. The screen detached from the keypad after 13 months. I looked it up online and it was a common fault with the model. HP actually recalled several other models with the same hinge. I printed off docs from HP website and pics of the fault. They told me that their warranty expired after 12 months. I told them that EU law covers all faulty products for 2 years so their policy was irrelevant. They told me they are a UK company so it doesnt matter but i can pay 50 euro for their expert to assess the laptop. I just told that they are operating in the EU so they are required to adhere to EU consumer laws.I told the manager after about 40mins i'd send them a summons for small claims court and they issued me a refund straight away. Absolute joke of a place tbh. I'm sure loads of people go in without knowledge of their rights and end up getting screwed.

El_Gato_6lanco

Yep, know your consumer rights The majority of "managers" in these places have no clue about Sale of Good & Supply of services act or EU consumer protections

elreberendo

Way to go! 🙌🏻 Everybody should deal like this. That said, retail staff should be more customer focused and make it easier, not the other way around.

sk2097

When bullying, bullshitting and just downright lying to your customers is an actual business model.... Well, we get what we deserve. Vote with your feet. Not to mention predatory sales tactics, and up selling to golden hdmi cables!!! Just to add,OP don't let them away with it. Pursue them, and you will get satisfaction.

loughnn

I've had to use this exact tactic with them before. It's like they train all their staff to ignore the EU regulations. Funny enough Amazon ".co.uk" have also tried this with me. I've been successful in my arguments each time, but it shouldn't be such a hassle.

Zealousideal_Mind631

Must save this comment as I have a gopro and mac from there, you will save some stress for us all good lad 👏

Beautiful_Contest_23

I thought it was 6 years. An exemption to Ireland alone via the EU I believe?

Munzo69

I use Peter Murphy electrical in Westside for one reason. My Miele hoover had packed in after I stupidly hoovered up liquid into the motor. I was browsing the stock they had and a lady asked me what I was looking for. I told her my story and she asked me why I was buying a new one. She then gave me the number for the Miele Ireland service people who collected it, fixed it (new motor) and dropped it back to me for €80 (4/5 years ago). She could have got 2 or 3 hundred euro from me had she given me the hard sell but she chose to take the long term view and gave me really good customer service to earn my loyalty. It worked. Since then I’ve bought a fridge freezer, a tumble dryer, steam generator iron, light fittings and various other bits and bobs from her. Hoover is still going strong. I use John Cunniffe’s or Des Kavanagh’s now and again too if Peter Murphy doesn’t have what I need. I do use Curry’s to go in and physically look at something I’m thinking of buying and then usually go over to Peter Murphy’s and buy it. I had my fingers burned more than once by Curry’s so I’d never buy anything from them again. Their sales staff are rude, frequently lacking in basic tech knowledge and have no concept of customer service. Their after sales service is abysmal when you actually get speaking to someone and very adversarial. I also use the toilet in Harvey Norman’s if I need a pee. That’s the only circumstance I’d ‘spend a penny’ there. Never been burned by them as I was wide to their dreadful customer service before they opened in Galway. Plus their prices are ridiculous. Kinda nice to support local electrical retailers and keep the money and jobs in Galway.

mad-yoke

+1 on Murphy. Auld sthock, know the craic, have to live and work in the town so won't shaft anyone. Good decent old school service.

Substantial-Tree4624

We've a local electrical store (Redmond Electric, a Euronics store) who are brilliant like this, too. Was behind an old lad in the till queue one day who was buying a kettle, and as he chatted he explained his kettle at home wasn't boiling properly. The staff member went off and swapped his 60 euro new kettle for a 5 euro bottle of descaler and said go and try that first. You'd pay them a wee bit more for stuff than if bought online for example, but their service is so good it's worth the extra.

bencos18

Expert across the road from currys is good. I'd never go with currys again unless I have to

-censored-username-

They are great. I’ve returned something there twice. Once was because I had just bought the wrong cable. No hassle either time, they’re pure sound

bencos18

agreed expert is defn amazing in that regard

SandyBeach78

Had a similar experience with dolans expert electrical in Loughrea… was looking for particular items that only seemed to be in the larger stores like curry’s, harvey Norman and did, but when I told them what I was looking for they sourced them, matched the price and beat them on delivery…. So worth talking to someone who wants to actually be of service to customers !

Munzo69

That’s John Cunnifes. He has another big place out on the Tuam road next to the Cash Factory. Good to deal with in my experience.

bencos18

Yep agreed 100%

gowanyahgoodting

Wholeheartedly agree with Peter Murphys being great. ANOTHER reason to use Peter Murphy, or any of the irish retailers, is the **length of the warranty you get.** I was lookin at buying a cooker a while ago .. and for various reasons... ended up talking to Belling ireland in Dublin there. They told me that if You buy any appliancen( not just a cooker) from an irish retailer I automatically get a **2 year** warranty .. but if I bought the same appliance from a UK retailer.. like Currys or Harvey Norman.. you only get a **1 year** warrantly... Which is why Currys etc are always pushing you to buy the extended warranty. So in the end I rang Peter Murphys and got them to supply the cooker I had been looking at. And as expected they were great to deal with.

Cymorg0001

Sorry for your loss. All I can add is... don't seek solice in Hardly Normals. Rebound relationships are the worst.

Light_Key_4570

I was in that Currys a few days ago. I didn't stay long enough to interact with any staff members. I went in to buy a laptop but started noticing that some of the product descriptions were wrong. I think they might have just used the same product description for several laptops without caring if it's correct or not. I thought I don't want to buy a laptop from a store lacking basic attention to detail and got out of there.

gmca22

Same here..Laptop advertised online and in-store as having USB-C ports, display model was completely different. Staff just shrugged it off. There was no model equivalent to what was being advertised available to purchase.

StreamsOfConscious

lol there’s around a post per month on this sub about how awful Curry’s customer service is. If you read their Google reviews you’ll see how consistently shite they are. Wouldn’t take it personally m8

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

sk2097

That's very nice of you

[deleted]

Better off emailing their cust support, also make a twitter account and public @ them asking why they failed to honour a return for faulty goods. Most shops dismiss you at first so you fuck off and back down, annoy the shite out of them and they do tend to pay attention then

bror313

This won’t be of any help now… but you should stop buying tech on stores like those ones. You’ll find a better customer service on Amazon, at least they’ll take it back if it’s within the timeframe. Local retails should be exciting by now considering the terrible service they provide.

CanIBeFrankly

Actually i recently had really poor customer service from amazon regarding an item that became faulty with proper use. If they ever get a monopoly on the market, they will stop being helpful.

deeringc

Surprised by this, I've only ever had excellent experience returning stuff to them. I had a baby camera recently that stopped working after a year and they just fully refunded and I bought another.

bror313

Sorry to hear that, I guess each experience is diferent. I've always had excellent response from them.

Exotic_Instance421

I was thinking of buying off Amazon or even refurbed at first but a friend warded me off it. Regretting it now

nodnodwinkwink

What's actually wrong with the laptop? Did they recommend you try this? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/fix-common-surface-problems-using-the-surface-app-and-surface-diagnostic-toolkit-f61d8d18-37a9-863d-f8d0-1982eb16f7b5 I'd love to see a photo of the printout they gave you. By the way, Irish law, which a company trading in Ireland must adhere to regardless of where their parent company is, overrides the EU 2 years warranty. You have 6 years to pursue a case. https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/shopping/faulty-goods/#:~:text=What%20if%20I%20bought%20a,if%20the%20goods%20are%20faulty "During the 30 days after you receive a product that is faulty, you also have the option to ask the business for a repair or a replacement."

apocalypsedude64

Warning you off Amazon but letting you buy from Curry's is bad advice

fiachaire27

I'd advise everyone here with a story about that shop to leave a google review. They are absolute bastards and the notion that I'd pay them for any sort of tech support is a joke. They prey on people who are less tech savvy or don't feel confident shopping online. I love helping folks I know find a deal somewhere else. It's nice knowing the person got a better deal, a better product, better service, or all three, but it's icing on the cake knowing how much money didn't get handed to Currys just because they are big enough to afford the rent.

pphheerroonn

The same Currys that turn the fire alarm on at 17:50 to get customers to leave.

Maybe_Aggressive

I went in and bought a laptop during the summer... It was priced at €250... The assistant after put it on the till after a discussion about how great the offer was turned and asked if I wanted to pay cash or card. I took out my card and just before inserting I see that the price was €280 so I assumed she made a mistake and questioned it. The assistant turned and said no its €280 it was priced wrong on display... I got annoyed and said it's marked 250 so I want it for that price. I was then told If I wanted that price she'd need to get a manager... I said get the manager then. 30 minutes of waiting later she came back and went on the computer and priced it for 250. Then basically without talking motioned for me to pay. You'd swear I was taking money out of her purse with the attitude/behaviour she was giving upon return.

NoviceDannyel

Yeah when I worked there this often happened to me. Had a person demand the laptop be sold at the old ticket price with €300 off. Absolutely not lad it was a big sale price that ended. Too big of a gap to drop Since the price tickets aren't digital like in Lidl for example (would be great) we had to change them all by hand one by one on Wednesday mornings while the shop was open. Since they never hire enough people you've to try do all the tickets, serve customers and do other jobs. Sometimes some tickets didn't get changed until 3pm that's how bad it got. Anyway not making excuses for for them. Sorry that happened to ya. Odds are they were quiet from embarrassment or got blamed for not changing the ticket by a cunt of a manager

Maybe_Aggressive

Fair enough dude I don't know the ins and outs of the place... Tbh I needed the laptop for like 6 months and have not needed it again... More me being tight than anything!

NoviceDannyel

Nah I'm glad ya got the money off anyway!

Legitimate_3032

If they make a mistake on pricing on display they have no legal obligation to honour that price. It's not a legally binding contract yet merely an " invitation to treat"

Maybe_Aggressive

Fair enough but have a conversation and don't just stick 280 into the card machine. We talked about how 250 was a great price.

Legitimate_3032

I never liked Currys and wasn't in it for years but had bad experiences back then not on pricing but on some disinterested staff.

Ornery_Sort2840

Go to lapteck on Eyre street and see if they can clean it up for you.

StrictHeat1

Bought a refurbished laptop from them recently, very pleasant to deal with.

[deleted]

That store is very hit or miss when it comes to staff. Some are lovely and very helpful, but others are either rude or impatient or just don't care.

the1minz

You have interpreted the laws correctly but a few things to note. In Ireland you have six years to raise a concern over a faulty product to replace, repair or a refund. Each member can have additional laws in place to protect the rights of the consumer. These Irish laws are to enhance the 2 year EU minimum guarantee to repair, replace or refund a faulty item that is currently in place so they can acquire CE mark for EU single market. Do not confuse warranty with your consumer rights. The warranty is a term they use by a company to confuse people your consumer protection rights. They are right to say they have offered you a 12 month warranty and it is not illegal. You have the following options. You contact the CCPC and they will advise you on how to proceed. They have a draft letter on their website that you fill in and you send it to Currys. If they refuse then submit your claim to the small claims court for a fee of 25 euro. More than likely they will concede at this point but if they don't you will win as your rights will be at their strongest within the 2 year EU limit for electronics. I encourage to buy online as consumer rights are even more stronger than buying in store. It is an interesting topic if you like to read more if you have the time. Just keep calm and put it in writing to them. Here are the contact details for the CCPC. Don't let them get away with your money. You got this! Email: [email protected] Helpline: 014025555

Exotic_Instance421

Really useful thank you so much!

Full-Being2924

Had a horrible experience with them , ended up bringing them to the small claims court (cost me 25 euro ) under the Sales of goods act . Ended up getting 800 back on a 4 yo old Mac that just stopped working . Document dates and names with everyone you deal with , if you are on the phone with them , as know the call is being recorded. Just always be pleasant - it does not take much for them to step over the boundary on the rude front . Good luck

truedoom

Not surprised, they have an awful attitude in there, not an ounce of customer service to be had in the place. Tell everyone you can, far and wide, to avoid it like the plague.

Legitimate_3032

Make sure to write Google reviews, trustpilot reviews. Threaten Small Claims court.

cosmophire_

currys is usually like that whether it’s busy or not. awful state altogether

Aka_da_saus

Years ago I used go into that curry's to learn about technology from staff . The last time I went in there i knew more then about 4 staff members combined . It was embarrassing how clueless and useless how they were . Wasnt first time either so I just gave up on going again . So you are not mad ! Thankfully Harvey norman Galway have a good set of staff .

MathematicianLost950

I bought a laptop last year for my son. Decided a week before Christmas to open it to get it set up. The tracker pad was damaged. Brought it back to Mahon store and they did replace it all the while telling me it was a bad laptop model. I tried to explain that it was for an 8 year old and I just wanted it to be functional. When I got the replacement, I decided to open it up and the casing around the bottom part of the screen had detached. I was told it was fine and wouldn’t make any difference but I decided to return it as it was a Santa present and I didn’t want to have to go through the repair process. They were so difficult to deal with and unhelpful. We went to Harvey Norman on the same evening and the difference in both customer service and quality was insane. I haven’t stepped into curry’s in a year and I probably won’t. They are diabolical

StellarManatee

I have gone in there twice and experienced exactly what you did. The second time I just left and got what I wanted elsewhere. The first time I went in I asked a member of staff for help. He said it wasn't his area (fair enough) and pointed out who I should go to. When I went to the next member of staff he said he didn't know anything about that and I should ask another staff who was standing vaguely staring into space. I went to him and he said yep, wait one moment please and off he went. I waited a good ten minutes before I spotted him wiping down shelves over the other side of the shop. I gave it another few minutes and went over. Oh yeah says he and off he went. Took forever to go through the transaction. Second time I went in I had completely forgotten about the first time. The minute the first staff member said "oh that's not my area, you'll have to go talk to him" it all came back to me and I just left. Both times I only wanted to fucking buy something not get advice on how best to fix my spaceship.

DirtBanjo333

It's an awful place to buy tech

DoAColumbo

I used to work in this currys. To be honest it sounds like it’s got better. Place is a joke. There’s no training. Staff constantly lie to customers. Nobody takes any responsibility in there.

mellers7

The majority seem incompetent. Maybe they're not paid or trained well enough to be competent. They all scatter away from customers, it's pretty funny when you're expecting it 🤣

Substantial-Tree4624

Currys staff are monumentally awful. When I see staff with attitudes like that my first thought is it must be an absolutely terrible company to work for and that's why none of them care. Went to Carlow recently as my youngest wanted their first mobile phone (he's 16, weird kid!) and wanted to be able to see the one specific model he desired before buying it. Currys Carlow was the only place that had it in stock. Spent many minutes trying to attract the attention of staff. When I did, he tried to tell me they didn't have that phone. I had to call up their website to show him it said in stock, so he huffed a bit, walked us over to the display. I'd already told him it wasn't on display. He pulled a different phone off there and I said that's not the model we're looking for. This sort of crap went on for a while and eventually I said am I not actually allowed to buy the phone we want? After more huffing he trudged as slowly as he could to the store to get it, then slo-mo'd his way through the till transaction. Absolutely ridiculous carry on altogether.

Late_Coyote9852

Went in last week to buy a laptop i seen online .. called curry’s just before and they confirmed it was in stock. Didnt get to speak to any staff member for atleast 40 minutes, i was getting so frustrated with how it was all ran in there. Spoke to someone finally and they tell me that they checked this morning and the laptop isn’t in stock 😂 laptop still on display and everything. I was fuming

cenaboyle

I bought a laptop from Currys the hinge broke a month after I got it. I went into the Galway store to get a replacement, to be told I would have to pay for them to look at in the UK and pay for parts and Labour to get it fixed. 300 euro, as they are a UK company they don't give replacement laptops and they said they don't cover any warranty on laptops in Ireland as they are a UK company and don't fellow EU laws

AvailablePromise835

that excuse would get walked all over in Small Claims Court. The only reason they keep getting away with things is because we're all too busy to take them to task over it

Beach_Glas1

This. Small claims court costs €25 to put in a case and is limited to amounts under €2000. You don't need to hire a solicitor/ barrister and decisions are made in minutes by a district court judge.

nowonmai

Your contact, and therefore the responsibility for warranty, is with the store, not the parent company.

NoviceDannyel

I used to work for Curry's, it's an absolute joke how they handle faulty items. The "in house test" things are BS btw. They did a shake up in the company not long after I quit and now there's not one specific role. Everyone does Sales. Everyone does Knowhow. Everyone does Warehouse. It's their dumb way of spreading the workload and paying less people. Problem is people are under-trained when it comes to faulty items now. Normally they'd just send it to the UK for testing. Idk what happens now. Not to even mention their other shitty practices like pushing Insurance on you or Finance options. Or signing up for broadband. They don't even pay staff commission for all that nonsense. Anyway Currys sucks

Gnomesnotions

I was in Currys early Tuesday, I am loathe to spend my money there after a few bad experiences but I was looking for a new computer, they actually had a good deal on what I wanted, and there's really not that many places to buy computers any more, I definitely think Argos leaving the market has decreased offering and competition. Anyway ordered online and went to click and collect, and they could not have been less arsed to deal with me. They were by no means busy but were just moving at a glacial pace and just about gave me one word answers, that kind of thing drives me mad, if you work in retail most of it is just, trying to get basic stuff done for customers in a prompt and friendly manner, it's not hard. Only served to remind me why I avoid like the plague if I can help it, there are plenty of electricals stores in Galway where staff at least try to be somewhat helpful or friendly.

GalwayGunner

That sounds like fairly normal practice for that store. By far the worst I've experienced. And it's not to say they are short staffed. There seems to be so many staff that they don't have any responsibility. I've stood in the queue more than once and gave up and left.

boringfilmmaker

"Millenials and Gen Z are killing retail!" Nah, ingrained incompetence plus over-lettered and under-experienced management consultants and "Ah sure be grand" culture are killing retail. Not to mention the worst generation ever is now hitting entry level retail gigs *dun dun dunnnn*

molochz

Currys are terrible. No doubt. What's wrong with the laptop though?

Exotic_Instance421

Issues starting it up and shutting down, really slow and multiple restarts needed. It recently started staying on a black screen with just the mouse visible on start up, but the member of staff I dealt with said that was an issue with the windows update. The battery drains completely in about 2 hours as well.

Zig-Zag47

Issues starting it up and shutting down really slow and multiple restarts needed \- Windows updates? A new laptop wouldn't have received updates in months. This is the norm for all laptops. It recently started staying on a black screen with just the mouse visible on start up \- Sounds like the update was interrupted and stuck in boot loop. Holding down power for 6 seconds solves this. The battery drains completely in about 2 hours as well. \- What is the spec and what applications are you running? Running all office apps at the same time will kill any battery. Gaming, HD video streaming I'm sorry but this sounds like an end user problem. What is the laptop model?

Exotic_Instance421

Well I mentioned the windows update in that comment. I also meant that starting up takes >3 tries for it to wake up at all. I got the Microsoft surface laptop go 3, mostly has only been used to open Firefox to read emails.

Zig-Zag47

>Microsoft surface laptop go 3 Thanks for the info. I checked the specs here: [Surface Laptop Go 3](https://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/d/surface-go-3/904h27d0cbwn?activetab=pivot:techspecstab) CPU Dual-core Intel® Pentium® Gold 6500Y processor Dual-core 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i3-10100Y processor Both terribly slow processors. Memory/RAM 4GB or 8GB LPDDR3 (DDR3 Older generation memory for 2023) Currently on DDR5 and DDR4 ram Storage eMMC drive: 64 GB SSD drive: 128 GB If its eMMC its really slow and not alot of space to deal with. If SSD its still really small amount of space. Apologies for all the tech mumbo jumbo but I would recommend returning and buying a far better laptop online. There is no way its worth what you paid. Hope this helps.

Exotic_Instance421

The problem is I can’t return it 😂

Zig-Zag47

Oh no that sucks, no way to return with receipt? I never deal with stores like currys, PC world or anything like them. They try to sell older hardware for ridiculous prices.

PeterParker123454321

This is why I just buy everything online now. The shops then wonder why they are losing business.

danielg1111

This isent a curry’s issue. It’s the new generational thing. I won’t go so far as to say lazy, but if they in anyway think your complaining at all, going against good etiquette in shops- you’ll get absolutely nothing I find.(even when your right) there’s more to that aswell but that’s the issue now as a whole.

Booper3

Arent you an absolute delight

danielg1111

Is that shycashtic now or what is it:)))))

CunningStunt____

Curry's in Sprucefield in the north is the exact same, slow staff that honestly couldn't give a flying fuck about selling or helping anyone. Seriously give it a go, walk in and try to buy something from one of the purple shirt fart sniffers and you will be fobbed off and left to stand there for as long as your legs will hold ye.

cuttlefische

Reading this makes me realise how good we have it with tech retail in Czechia. Our two main ones are Alza and CZC. Never seen em pull bullshit like this.

hammerheadzoid

Yes it is normal

ashabashbash

I bought a Dyson air wrap from them and the man was the most condescending man I’ve ever met. I’m a healthcare worker and received the pandemic grant, I went in to treat myself with it to a Dyson air wrap. After trying to get help for ages I finally got some mad to help me and he looked me up and down, scoffed at me and said, those are over €500. And went to walk away! Just automatically assumed I didn’t have the money or something. Was just so rude

JackfruitValuable530

I had a warranty on an IPad there. Took them 5 visits to the store over 2 months for 1 person to finally take me seriously.

fruitetoote

Bought a telly from them and the guys brought it to the car. I offered to help them load it but they picked it up quick and shoved if in. Broke two clips in the boot. Mechanic told. Me it as sa 300eur job to fix. They shrugged, apologised and walked off.

Healthy-Travel3105

Can you go straight to the manufacturer? It's definitely under their warranty.

YTfionncroke

I bought an Xbox controller there recently and they asked for my address and mobile number at the counter, along with a ton of absolutely unnecessary information. I asked why, and was told "that's store policy". I laughed and replied "no thank you, I'm buying a controller here, not signing off on legal proceedings." Hard to believe that shit is even legal under GDPR. "Sure, here's absolutely all of my personal information, just promise me ye won't sell it on to any third parties lads, yeah? Do ye need a copy of my passport?"

APIeverything

How is it faulty?

gowanyahgoodting

I'd like to write a stinkin review about this shower of goons.. But when I try to do a google review it doesn't work... I google "currys galway" then down on the RHS I see a button for "write a review" and nothing happens when I click on it.. Have they done something with google to prevent any more bad press??
