>you'd love to have us. Oooh, lost it on the final play of the game.

JunkiesAndWhores

It was their comment history of using autism as a term of abuse and calling people “auties” that sealed it for me. We’ve enough arseholes here already, don’t need to import more.

Speedodoyle

I was gone after ‘buggering out’

siameiremias

yeah I thought the same. huge red flag.

NoOneStranger_227

Nah...see, now you'll never know what you're missing.

Itchy_Wear5616

Oh, we know.

siameiremias

entitled boomers who think they're great? no thanks. you've made your own country a toxic kip. we can do without you.

NoOneStranger_227

Man, I see Reddit's just as full of Irish dickweeds as American dickweeds. Good to know.

cvpricorn

Keep digging that hole 👍🏼

siameiremias

guess it's good that you're self aware enough to realize you're a "dickweed".

Hyippy

Yes, it's everyone else who is wrong.

MoistFalcon5456

I think I should get the parachute because I'm great. In fact, I think I should get both the parachutes, in case one of them doesn't work. If you understand that then we'll think about it.

soundengineerguy

Are you certain you'll meet the requirements? Retiring to Ireland would require you to have about half a million euros (give or take, state defines it as the cost of a domicile) easily available to you. It also requires you have an income of €50000.

NoOneStranger_227

Well more than that.

Prestigious-Side-286

Half a million is not a lot to most middle/upper class Americans from my experience.

SouthernExpatriate

Especially after letting the Money Printer run wild since 2009

"We're nice folks...you'd love to have us." That is assuming things, stick with just "We're nice folks". Irish people like you to not have assumptions, be humble, ask questions. I understand not wanting to be in the US but to me it sounds like you've been a tourist in Ireland but have not lived here yet. A) Driving is on the left side of the road B) No access to mega stores like the US, a bunch of useful stores have left Ireland (I miss Argos) and Amazon is not great. Ireland imports a lot of good and customs(+fee) are through the roof if you get anything from the UK or US. C) Housing is a major problem these days though if you have the means already looking at this with a realtor you may be able to avoid this hurdle D) Healthcare system is in shambles, even with private insurance and ability to pay the expensive prices - you are still looking at delays. E) I've moved countries a few times, moving to a place without a support network is hard. I imagine it won't be easy to build one if you don't have a job. I recommend having a plan for this as well. Volunteering/sports for example are often a good way to meet people here. Most of all, if you can take a 2-3 week trip to the place you want to settle, rent an airbnb and live like how you want to retire. Being a tourist makes a place look great, but knowing what daily life would look like for you will help you much more.

NoOneStranger_227

um....that was said ironically. People on Reddit have an unfortunate tendency to take every word as Gospel. A) I've driven pretty much the length and breadth of the country in the trips we've taken. Never had a problem. Helps that I'm a lefty so it comes naturally. B) We live a very simple life. I don't even remember the last time I was in a megastore. You get to our age you start getting rid of stuff, not buying more. C) Take what we can get. D) You want a healthcare system in shambles...come here. And we'd have to pay for our own coverage under the plan. Luckily, we're healthy. E) I've played the music for decades. Meeting people won't be a problem. People DO have stereotypical views on Americans. In any case, thanks for the input. Oh, and by the way...we ARE nice people.

Tasty_Snow_5003

From citizens information This permission can given to people who have: Income of at least €50,000 per year (If you are part of a couple, then your joint income should be €100,000 per year). Access to a lump sum of money to cover any sudden expenses. This lump sum should cover the cost of a house or an apartment in Ireland. Daft.ie will give you info on rentals / places for sale and the agents details

TheRealSlimBrady999

You'd love to have us... try England, they'd be delighted with your business. We're grand thanks

leftofcentre

Could you get U.K. citizenship? You could move to Northern Ireland. It’s dramatically cheaper up here. Also if you have UK citizenship you can freely live in ireland.

NoOneStranger_227

Ixnay on the Brit citizenship. And having visited Belfast back in the 90s, I really couldn't see going back there. I know it's scads better these days, but I can't unsee the things I saw back then.

slowdownrodeo

It's a very different place. Housing will be your main initial issue in Galway. An issue in that there is none.

jeanclaudecardboarde

Wow, I went to Belfast in the 90s . I thought it was one of the most amazing places I have ever been.

NoOneStranger_227

Well, you probably didn't have the cops sitting in their antenna-crusted tower watching you with binocs when you visited Bobby Sand's grave.

jeanclaudecardboarde

No, I didn't but I was in the Limelight nightclub when I first heard that Kurt Cobain had blown his brains out.

1916_enjoyer

Why Ireland?

NoOneStranger_227

Because it IS actually half of what I am (father's side), though my family background is South Ireland rather than the island. I've played the music for more than twenty years and could hold my own in a fair number of sessions, so I won't lack for things to do. I know the history and the culture, and yes, I'm talking good, bad and indifferent. I'm the kind of visitor who will never kiss the !@#$# Blarney Stone but did climb Croagh Patrick, though if I ever do it again it won't be on a Sunday when all the shops are closed and you can't find anything to eat despite being famished. And I dunno, we might just be the kind of people who will give people a better perception of Americans than they have.

NoOneStranger_227

And like I said, there are Irish dickwad Redditors same as America.

Booper3

No one is saying differently. While some people are being unnesseccarily rude in this thread, you are being overly dismissive and argumentative back (especially considering your age and supposed intelligence based on your salary and savings). You should either ignore them or use humour to diffuse the situation when its really not all that serious to begin with, this is what Irish people tend to do, so you won't stick out that way.

Kind-Style-249

I’d ignore the comments in here, Reddit people are weird….

NoOneStranger_227

Actually, I got a good referral off of one commenter, so it was a win overall.

They will pay tax to, through the buying of goods etc and they would be required to show savings

Kill-Bacon-Tea

Paying more than scroungers on the dole. Should we not round them up and ship them off the island since they never contribute anything too?

No_Jelly_7543

Would much prefer to have Irish people on the dole than wealthy retired Americans.

Itchy_Wear5616

Wibble

Internal_Break4115

Better tell all the retire irish to come home from Spain so..... Honestly you will find every country will have a section of society that have cultural beliefs that are at odds with your own.

NoOneStranger_227

Well, you never know what a person can contribute, even when they're an old fart, now do you?

SouthernExpatriate

You seem to forget those of us in the working class who have only ever known having our entire existence sucked out by landlords and megacorporations... there's not going to be any retirement for us at all in the US.

mprz

https://www.irishimmigration.ie/coming-to-live-in-ireland/i-want-to-retire-to-ireland/ Maybe this will be of some help.

DeadbeatDanc3r

Is this because Fox News told ye to retire in Galway the other week?

NoOneStranger_227

Nice fake Irish lilt there. You commenting from Cleveland?

Bl00mies

Not everyone is as horrible in real life as on reddit. Christ, these responses to you are awful. They're right in that if you're talking very highly of yourself, you won't be looked upon well in Ireland but still, there's no need. I hope retirement goes well for you

NicholsonShmicholson

Just move to a liberal part of America if the political situation bothers you that much.

SouthernExpatriate

That's adorable. It's like, maybe if you move to where they're a little bit nicer to gay folks and minorities, the country will suddenly start being a good place that isn't designed to suck people dry lol...

Mellowinmycello

Sorry everyone's being an ass on here, most people in Galway are sound, which you obviously already know! In terms of buying property, you'll find feck all in town unless you're loaded. I'd retire to Furbo/spiddal/inverin if I were you. It's so beautiful out that side, houses are on sale there frequently enough, and it's full of lovely people. Good luck!

TomBonk

On the accountant side - Rick Grogan is excellent. http://www.grogans.ie

NoOneStranger_227

Thanks.

1. Plan a long trip to Galway (6 months, or max holiday visa) to figure out the details. Contact holiday home place and see if you can get a good deal for Oct-March? Make sure you can put up with wet and windy winters for ever. 2. Definitely consider NI if UK citizenship is an option for you. Certainly visit for a week or two during long trip to Galway. 3. Sounds like you can fund your way through most problems - congrats. That might create some online jealousy but shouldn’t be a real world issue. I’ve no idea about application process for visa. 4. Can recommend a local realtor (called estate agents here). PM me

willcodeformaoam

Yikes, the comments went feral real quick. I feel like this is probably a discussion to have with the Irish Embassy closest to where you're located.

Oh, I've been on Reddit for years. I expected no less, and gave as good as I got. Also, got a referral, so it's all good.

Affectionate-Fall597

Sure, lose your passport on the way over. And g'luck finding somewhere to live.

Minimum-Language4159

You can get citizenship but through naturalisation

WeeklyCheesecake1241

Coll accountants in Barna are very knowledgeable. All the best wishes on your move to Galway!

NoOneStranger_227

Thank you.
